There are Irish folk rhythms; samba, calypso and reggae; a Bollywood dancer and Jacobean court dances. Anjali’s show is part of Wiltshire’s DanceExplosion Festival and Kathryn Tickell brings great tunes from Northumberland – even Beethoven’s mighty 7th symphony evokes the very essence of dance. Doric String Haydn: String Quartet in C, Op 50 No 2 Prussian Janáˇcek: String Quartet No 2, Intimate Letters Brahms: String Quartet in C minor, Op 51 No 1 Amongst the greatest string quartets ever written, Janáˇcek’s Intimate Letters is full of passion and fire. It was composed in a remarkable three week burst of white hot inspiration just a month before he died. The second of Haydn’s masterly Prussian quartets, with its rousing finale, and Brahms’ first published quartet are equally rewarding.

Nonet and the incredible Wiltshire Youth Jazz Orchestra – the winning team that packed the Centre for the New Year Jazz gig – are back with a great afternoon of jazz. Featuring Mike Daniels, Nick Sorensen, Ray D’Inverno and Tony Roberts, Nonet brings a mix of specially commissioned compositions and those recorded by Miles Davis’ ‘Birth of the Cool’ band. And in the second half, WYJO premieres Suite for Jazz Orchestra. Composed by Mike Mower in celebration of our 10th Anniversary, it crafts WYJO’s own ideas while leaving plenty of opportunities for improvisation so that the Orchestra can make it their own. anJALI DANCE COMPANY Anjali’s celebrated dancers with learning disabilities bring this thrilling new double bill of outstanding dance. ‘Butterfly’ is a beautiful mix of dance and film blending traditional and contemporary styles that are simply alive with movement. Then, in total contrast, a lads night out in ‘Save the Last Dance’ is driven by a jukebox soundtrack that goes from Disco to Country & Western to The Chemical Brothers. Fifteen outstanding musicians joined South West Music School last year, a new virtual school for highly talented young musicians aged between eight and eighteen. Haydn: Quartet in D, Op 50 No 6 Britten: Quartet No 3, Op 94 Beethoven: Quartet in C, Op 59 No 3 Razumovsky This distinguished quartet gave one of the Centre’s first concerts and it’s a great pleasure to welcome them back with this lovely programme. Framed here by two classical masterpieces, Britten’s ethereally beautiful third quartet, with its wonderfully spare textures and solo writing, was his last major composition. Written in the shadow of death, it is in effect his swan song and a fascinating and rewarding work. The extraordinary final movement, ‘La Serenissima’

In this actionpacked musical story about facing fears and making friends he’s joined by a musical mutton, a clambering clarinet, a baa-ing bassoon! With its outstanding young musicians, Ensemble 360’s reputation for excellence is rapidly growing. Their concert opens with a splendid Trio which, despite its bright and rhythmic outer movements, earns its nickname from the brooding tension of the slow movement and its references to Macbeth. Full of surprises, Brahms’ first Serenade is a lively and attractive dance-like work that deserves to be known much better than it is. And sandwiched between the two is a beautiful new work by Welsh composer Huw Watkins,

The repertoire of colonial South America adapted the music Brazil, Mexico and Peru of the Spanish and Portuguese Paragon Singers with Bradford baroque, adding its own special Baroque Band and Faye Newton flavour. Highly imaginative, it covers a vast expressive range, from its atmospheric opening to the riot of colour and rhythm at the end. Another concert favourite, Scheherazade, with its exotic orchestration and haunting melody for solo violin and harp, is based on The Book of One Thousand and One Nights. Dubbed by a Parisian critic as ‘half bad boy, half monk’,

Miles Remembered The tenth January Jazz Concert: Dedicated to the memory of Miles Kington, humourist and jazz critic (1941–2008) Celebrate a decade of our great January jazz gigs where local musicians and young stars of the future join with renowned professional musicians. Hear trumpeter Mike Daniels, saxophonist Nick Sorensen, pianist and composer John Law, and the extraordinary talents of the Wiltshire Youth Jazz Orchestra to name just a few – there’s sure to be some very special guests too! Proceeds will be donated to Dorothy House and Julian House, Miles Kington’s favourite charities. This concert will be recorded by BBC Radio Wiltshire.

Summer Arts Workshops for Kids
• Wiltshire Music Centre runs an exemplary education and community programme in all parts of Wiltshire and Swindon.
• In September, schools and community groups will have workshops from Funi, a unique and talented duo from Iceland.
Nothing to do in the summer holidays? There’s plenty to do at the Wiltshire Music Centre!
• Activities with and for diverse communities are continually developing – from Autumn 2008 there will be a chance to take part in steel pan workshops every Tuesday evening.

• Each year, musicians visit special schools throughout Wiltshire and Swindon, working with the young people to create fantastic shows which they perform here.

• Black Voices are bringing back their hugely popular workshops in December, which will be available for schools and community groups. • Every two years, we work with small rural primary schools enabling them to create wonderful shows which they perform at the Centre. The 2008 project Everyman’s Land was about diversity, community cohesion and the environment. 20

• In the coming year, we aim to plan inclusively with black and other ethnic minority communities, young people at risk and people with disabilities to develop more exciting new projects.
• Learn the dances from High School Musical, Step Up 2 and Hairspray – or how about dances from the musicals, or some latin ballroom? Join Annette Purshouse on 14 and 15 August. • On 4 and 5 August you can use beautiful coloured Venetian glass to make an underwater sea life mosaic! Or create and decorate a seaside weaving! Make a wonderful North American Indian Dreamcatcher to hang in a window, or your own clay sign for your bedroom door!
• Use the latest computer technology and plenty of plasticine to shoot your own animation film – then add music and titles! That’s in the 3D animation workshop on 7 and 8 August. • Sing, dance and act in a 3 day performing arts workshop with Felicity Courage from 11–13 August – or for lots of singing book in on 21 and 22 August. Visiting Us Families Music is for everyone and families are especially welcome at our concerts. Look out for our special ticket offer shown in yellow boxes at the bottom of the pages: Bring the kids for just £1 each! For these concerts, one adult paying full price can bring two under 18s for just £1 each. But book early – first come, first served! Kids also particularly enjoy our family concerts and these too have special prices supported by John Lewis Partnership and The Mercers’ Company (and it’s ok to be a bit wriggly!).

When you get here Opening times Doors open 15 minutes before the start of the concert and preconcert talks. Please leave plenty of time to pick up your tickets. Latecomers Latecomers are admitted at an appropriate break. Bar The bar serves spirits, wines, beers, hot and soft drinks. Beat the queue and order your interval drinks on arrival.
Ticket Exchange If a concert has sold out, we will try to resell your ticket and offer you a credit against a future concert, less a ÂŁ1 administration fee. Please return your ticket no later than 5 hours before a performance. We regret that we are unable to refund tickets. Waiting List Call us to join the list for sold out concerts and we will tell you if tickets are returned for resale.
We want to ensure that your visit is as easy and enjoyable as possible. If you require any assistance or need further information, please call us on 01225 860100 or ask when you arrive. Bring a Friend If you need to bring a friend to support you at a concert, we are happy to offer a free ticket. Wheelchair Users will find level access to most parts of the Centre and specific parking bays close to the main entrance. Adapted Toilets are available for disabled visitors. For Braille Users there are tactile signs all around the Centre. People with Hearing Difficulties or Impairments can use our induction loops at the bar, box office and at pre-concert talks. The auditorium has an infrared system. Please ask at the box office for headphones or a portable neck loop. Guide Dogs/Assisting Dogs are always very welcome.
