Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. Louisa, or Children & Family Co-ordinator, is on leave this week. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection A PRAYER FOR ASH WEDNESDAY “Gracious God, today begins a period of inner reflection and examination. The days stretch before me and invite me inward to that silent, holy space that holds your Spirit. This special time beckons me to see my life through Christ's eyes and the truth and reality of your love incarnate. Give me the grace to enter the space of these days with anticipation of our meeting. And, when I open my soul to your presence, let your loving kindness flow over me and seep into the pockets of my heart. I ask this for the sake of your love. Amen. http://www.catholic.org/prayers/prayer.php?p=3107 Accessed 9th February 2017.

Triumph o'er the shades of night: Dayspring from on high, be near; Daystar, in my heart appear. Dark and cheerless is the morn unaccompanied by thee; joyless is the day’s return till thy mercy’s beams I see, till they inward light impart, glad my eyes and warm my heart. A reading from the Book of Exodus. The Lord said to Moses, ‘Come up to me on the mountain, and wait there; and I will give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction.’ So Moses set out with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God. To the elders he had said, ‘Wait here for us, until we come to you again; for Aaron and Hur are with you; whoever has a dispute may go to them.’ Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. The glory of the Lord settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days; on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the cloud. Now the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. Moses entered the cloud, and went up on the mountain. Moses was on the mountain for forty days and forty nights. Exodus 24:12-18

PSALM
A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.
The Lord is king; let the people tremble; he is enthroned upon the Cherubim; let the earth shake. The Lord is great in Zion; he is high above all peoples. Let them confess his name, which is great and awesome; he is the Holy One. Antiphon Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among those who call upon his name, they called upon the Lord, and he answered them. He spoke to them out of the pillar of cloud; they kept his testimonies and the decree that he gave them. Antiphon Psalm 99:1-3, 6-7
EPISTLE READING Reader
A reading from the Second Letter of Peter. For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honour and glory from God the Father when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory, saying, ‘This is my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.’ We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven, while we were with him on the holy mountain. So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, because no prophecy ever came by human will, but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. 2 Peter 1:16-21

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. Then Peter said to Jesus, ‘Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.’ While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!’ When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, ‘Get up and do not be afraid.’ And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, ‘Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.’ Matthew 17:1-9

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

ABOUT TODAY’S MUSIC Hendrik Andriessen (1892-1981) was of great significance for the renewal of Catholic church music in the Netherlands, and was renowned for his improvisations on the organ. His organ compositions show the unmistakable influence of the French romantic composers — a symphonic approach to that best comes to life on a large instrument placed in a reverberant church.
Though its title harkens back to the Baroque era, the Andriessen’s Sonata da Chiesa (Italian for church sonata) opens with a chorale-like hymn theme that uses the deep sonorities of the romantic organ. It is followed by four variations, and concludes with a toccata that reaches its apotheosis with a majestic restatement of the opening chorale. The chorale and variations, which are the organ prelude for today, bear some resemblance to what a mountain climber experiences, namely an ascent that is marked by periods of acclimatisation: the chorale at the foot of the mountain; variation 1 leads to base camp; variation 2 gives a view at a higher elevation; inclement weather is the theme of variation 3; and variation 4 characterises the other-worldly experience at the summit, exuding a sense of peace that eclipses human understanding. The finale, which is the organ postlude to-day, has the hallmarks of a mountain descent. Typically more dangerous than the ascent, going down a mountain includes hazards such as ice slopes, avalanches, and severe weather conditions. The attentive listener will notice these themes in the music, including recurring sweeping downward motions. Having been conditioned to the lower oxygen levels at higher altitudes, mountain climbers typically feel enormously energised when they return to the foot of the mountain. This is reflected in the finale as it reaches its conclusion in a majestic restatement of the opening chorale

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY This coming week Lent begins. On Ash Wednesday we will be offering three services, all with the imposition of ashes: 7:30 am, 12:10 pm, and High Mass at 6:30 pm. Ash Wednesday is the day when Christians stare death in the face and remember where they came from in terms of God’s creation, and that God doesn’t hate what God made. Ash Wednesday can be freeing. We move through the liturgy and acknowledge that humans are sinful. Fact. Turn on the news, humans are sinful, individually, in secret and corporately on mass. God sees it all. On Ash Wednesday when we are physically marked with ashes and remember that we will physically die one day. We are also reminded that God sees everything, and with that in mind we are free to let go of the things that prevent us from growing closer to God. This first day of Lent, offers the opportunity to figure out what we need to let die in our lives in order to grow closer to God. Here are three things you ought to know about Ash Wednesday: “What's the purpose of Ash Wednesday? It marks first day of the 40 days of Lent, a roughly six-week period (not including Sundays) dedicated
to reflection, prayer and fasting in preparation for Easter. It ends on Holy Thursday, the fifth day of Holy Week (the week leading up to Easter) that marks the Last Supper. In addition to certain rules about foods and fasting, many Christians (and even nonChristians) abstain from additional foods, luxury or material goods or certain activities and habits.
Inform. Inspire. Invite.
Where do the ashes some people put on their face come from? They're obtained from the burning of the palms of the previous Palm Sunday, which occurs on the Sunday before Easter, and applied during services. Palm Sunday marks Jesus' return to Jerusalem, when people waved palm branches to celebrate his arrival. The ashes are typically mixed with Holy Water or oil. What do the ashes mean? The ashes, applied in the shape of a cross, are a symbol of penance, mourning and mortality…There aren't any particular rules about how long the ashes should be worn, but most people wear them throughout the day as a public expression of their faith and penance.”

Preparation begins with attendance at the Lent Group (see above). KID’S CORNER Wow such excitement this week! Jesus takes his friends up a very high mountain to pray. All of a sudden his friends look over and see that Jesus is speaking with prophets that had long ago died! Jesus' face went as bright as the sun and his robes were sparkling white. A cloud came down and hid them, and then they heard a voice. It was the voice of God saying that Jesus was his Son and that he was very pleased and proud of him. This is called the Transfiguration. Jesus was filled with the light of God and his disciples saw it. Do you think maybe God wanted to show the disciples who they were really travelling with? God, you have done some pretty amazing things. We are grateful that we can read about all of your miracles and hope that we will one day be a part of something so incredible. Amen. (NB. Louisa, our Children & Families Co-ordinator, is on leave this week)
