It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. A Reflection St. John in his old age, day after day, again and again, preached one sermon in one sentence, Little children, love one another. For, love is of God, and God is love, and the Master’s own commandment final, Love one another as I have loved you. Every day, every hour, Lord Jesus, keep us in this one obedience, to learn love, create love, dispense love, live love, behind both act and impulse and in all our intercourse; a reverent love, thoughtful and wide and happy, unsparing of self and labour; imitators of thee, disciples of love, Christlike. But that we may love others, O Lord Christ, lead us first, lead us always, to love God. Fill our minds with thy mind, and majesty, of love; hold thine incarnate life of love before our eyes; hide the wounds of thy love within our heart; that, loving thee with all our strength, our love may flow as a mighty stream through thyself to all whom thou lovest. The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Jeremiah. Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the Lord; and the prophet Jeremiah said, ‘Amen! May the Lord do so; may the Lord fulfil the words that you have prophesied, and bring back to this place from Babylon the vessels of the house of the Lord, and all the exiles. But listen now to this word that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people. The prophets who preceded you and me from ancient times prophesied war, famine, and pestilence against many countries and great kingdoms. As for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes true, then it will be known that the Lord has truly sent the prophet.’ Jeremiah 28:5-9

Your love, O Lord, for ever will I sing; from age to age my mouth will proclaim your faithfulness. For I am persuaded that your love is established for ever; you have set your faithfulness firmly in the heavens. For you are the glory of their strength, and by your favour our might is exalted. Antiphon Truly, the Lord is our ruler; the Holy One of Israel is our King. Antiphon Psalm 89:1-4, 15-18

EPISTLE READING Reader

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans. Do not let sin exercise dominion in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. No longer present your members to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and present your members to God as instruments of righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God that you, having once been slaves of sin, have become obedient from the heart to the form of teaching to which you were entrusted, and that you, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to greater and greater iniquity, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness for sanctification. When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. So what advantage did you then get from the things of which you now are ashamed? The end of those things is death. But now that you have been freed from sin and enslaved to God, the advantage you get is sanctification. The end is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:12-23

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. 18 | THE LITURGY

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY The last week or so has been a particularly busy time in the parish of St James’, as we have marked sacramentally several rites of passage. On Saturday 24 June Bishop Melissa ordained in Christ Church Cathedral five deacons and three priests, among them our new priest, Mother Lucy. This is cause for celebration and rejoicing, that the church in our diocese is recognising God’s call in this number of people, and that these men and women are ready to answer God’s and the church’s call to serve in ordained ministry. It is another sign that the Diocese of New Westminster is alive and healthy, bearing fruit in God’s service. As we give thanks for all those recently ordained, we are reminded, all of us, to ask ourselves, “How is God calling me today to offer my gifts and talents in his service?” Those in ordained ministry have a particular role to play in and for the life of the church, as deacon, priest or bishop, as set out in the Ordination Services in the BAS. The priest is to preside at the celebration of the sacraments, to preach and teach, to absolve and to bless, to be an agent of Christ’s peace and

reconciliation. Accordingly, Mother Lucy presided for the first time at High Mass on Sunday 25 June, when the preacher was Fr Alex Wilson, Vicar of St Anselm’s Church. Our thanks are due to all those who worked hard to ensure the liturgy and the celebration lunch went so smoothly. As we give thanks for our new priest, Mother Lucy, we at St James’ are reminded to ask ourselves, “How are we as a community, how am I, an agent and a sign of Christ’s blessing and forgiveness, Christ’s peace and reconciliation, in a broken and divided world?”

Inform. Inspire. Invite.

Mass this Week

Later in the afternoon on Saturday 24 June, Mass was celebrated quietly in the Lady Chapel as a couple who worship from time to time at St James’ renewed their vows on the occasion of their 40th Wedding Anniversary. In this simple service they celebrated the presence of Christ at the heart of their lives and their relationship. Again we ask ourselves, “Is Christ at the heart of our lives and our relationships?”

for long-time member John Conway. The liturgy was a confident expression of Christian hope “in the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come,” as we prayed for John and entrusted him into the loving hands of God our Father. The question for us here is, “How as a church do we, how do I, live out, give expression to, this Christian hope? How do we bring to bear the light of the Risen Christ in the world today?”

On Wednesday 28 June Requiem Mass was offered in St. James’

The St. James’ Social Justice Group in partnership with Our Lady of Guadalupe Tonantzin Community is hosting lunch and a screening of the movie, This Changes Everything. “While the movie is not explicitly ‘faith-based,’ it is sparking dialogue in faith communities across the country. Could Naomi Klein’s movie on climate change prompt Christians to change the way they do church and live out their faith?

When Naomi Klein was invited to speak at a Vatican press conference after the release of Pope Francis’s encyclical on climate change, she found a faith perspective that resonated with both her own analysis of the problem’s root causes and her own hopes for the future ... it would be impossible to watch it without finding numerous resonances between the views discussed by Klein and the views—good and bad—that Christians have articulated about the relationship of humans to God’s creation.” Surrey Interfaith Council Please RSVP to Pat McSherry: patmcsherry@telus.net or call 604 687 6844 or signup in the Narthex.

ST. JAMES’ DAY: OUR FAITH IN ACTION After High Mass on July 23, we will gather for a lunch to acknowledge and celebrate the various forms of “outreach” at St. James’. In our parish, “our faith in action” takes on many forms—as individuals or in groups, through simple actions or large events, locally or internationally. Our faith calls us to reach beyond ourselves to meet others in Christian love. On this day we wish to honour the diverse expressions of faith in our congregation. There will be a short presentation during lunch followed by a “walk -about” to view display tables prepared by various individuals and groups who undertake initiatives at or through St. James’. Questions regarding this event can be addressed to Audrey Guay (audrey@stjames.bc.ca). We look forward to seeing you then! KID’S CORNER This week in the Gospel, Jesus tells us that whoever welcomes one of his followers, also welcomes Jesus himself and his Father, and they will be rewarded in Heaven. Jesus also says if we give someone who believes in him even a cup of cold water, they will too, be rewarded. PRAYER Hello God. Last week at St. James’, we welcomed Mother Lucy as a newly ordained priest. Bless us as we try to welcome everyone who comes to our parish with hospitality and acceptance. We know Jesus welcomes all of us, no matter who we are or what we may have done. Help us to look for and recognize the Jesus in everyone, in our parish and also in our lives outside the church.
