Susanne Schapowalow – Jazz Photography Gems Rediscovered In 2010 the jazz archives of Susanne Schapowalow were rediscovered by her grandson Felix. For 40 years all negatives and vintage prints have been ‘buried’ in houses in Hamburg and Malente, Germany. An exhibition in Berlin was the result and JazzPrezzo publishers published the book Sophotocated Lady in 2011. One interview for German regional television followed, plus a small exhibition in Istanbul, Turkey and then it became silent again. Only a few people were able to see the remarkable shots of a lady photographer who lived with the legends. The health of Susanne Schapowalow, born 1922 in Berlin, got fragile. With the help of Natascha Brüggemann, Susanne’s daughter, Wim van Zon and the late Hasselblad Master Award winner Hans van Ommeren took a dive in the archives and selected 60 large high quality prints that were made in 2010 and still could be signed by Schapowalow. The photos by this ‘Vivian Meyer of jazz photography’ have been on display at the pop-up Jazz Museum Rotterdam, the Boutique Boulevard in Hong Kong and at the BIM Huis, a famous jazz venue in Amsterdam. All exhibitions have been curated by Music Inspired Art.

Susanne Schapowalow – Jazz Photography Gems Rediscovered In July 2019 a selection was on display at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam. During the covid period all activities around the archive and the available prints came to a halt although the ambition to further explore the work of Susanne never faded For 2022, the year Susanne Schapowalow would turn 100 years, I coud take a deeper dive in the archive, knowing that many images still had not been discovered. This resulted in the idea of a Schapowalow 100 exhibition that could travel around the world. I took over 40 never seen before images from Germany, some of them represented in this catalogue. Here you will find the newly printed images that are for sale. They made us believe that Susanne Schapowalow was a master playing in the same league as William Claxton, Francis Wolff and Herman Leonard. To stay authentic all prints are made on thick barite paper. Wim van Zon/curator
