After an election cycle that will not end, and with negative connotations attached to the word “campaign,” “campaign” is not a term I am anxious to use. Nonetheless, in one way it describes what we will be doing as a church in the year 2017. Suffice it to say that the church council has taken note of our original building fund balance of $86.257.81 and recognized that the end is in sight. That is very good news. In addition, our outreach and publicity committees have been hard at work on plans to reach new people and add to the Winstanley family. That is also very good news. Together these two efforts do sound like a campaign, in the best sense of that word. I prefer, though, to think of them as part of our desire to “Fill the Hill.” Remember that Jesus said, “A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.” As a church, we have a building that is set on a hill. Based on what people have told me through the years, I’m not sure that we are not hidden. “Where are you again?” I hear again and again from people who have driven by us hundreds of times. So what we will be doing is making our presence known, talking about the Savior,
and engaging in activities that are designed to get us off the hill and get new people onto the hill. We will be taking Jesus’ Great Commission seriously. We will be applying it locally. There will be ways for you to serve and make a difference. Actually, we will need you to be part of this great endeavor to live faithful, discipled lives that cultivate relationships with those who do not know Jesus if we are to fill the hill. We cannot advertise people into the Kingdom, nor can we bully or argue them into the Kingdom. With the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, however, we may just be able to love them into the arms of Jesus. We want to help you help others. Sure, it will be great to see every seat in the sanctuary filled on Sunday morning. It will also be great to see our fellowship living out this simple two-sentence statement offered by Keith Meyer, “Discipleship is for the church. Disciples are for the world.” That is exactly where we are headed. Let’s do it, my good friends. Let’s fill the hill! Grateful to be your pastor, Dr. Steve

How does a new youth minister determine if he is having any success at all in his position? I’m sure there are many ways we could answer this question. But I must say, he is successful when he sets out with the youth on his first road trip in the church van and returns with all of the youth still breathing. And it doesn’t hurt if he stops at Taco Bell somewhere along the way. This past month Winstanley youth took a short journey to Marion, Illinois to attend Youth Encounter, an evangelistic event put together by the IBSA. During our time in Marion, we spent much time in worship, and we were challenged by the speaker to consider what it means to authentically believe in Christ. I was thankful not only for the event itself, but also for the time we spent together as a group on our way to Marion and back. The more time I spend with the students, the better I get to know them and their interests. It has been a joy in these first couple of months to discover some of the students’ gifts and abilities. Our own Stephen Idoux is a gifted video producer and script writer. He has already put his ability to use in making a short promotional video clip for one of our youth events, Friday Night Live. He even allowed me to have a part in the video. If you ever see it, you will understand why I’m not an actor.
Youth Event Fairview Heights Food Pantry Meet at the church on Saturday, November 19 at 9:30 am. We will head to the food pantry to volunteer from 10 am-noon. This is open to anyone. Please let Fielding know if you can help.
On a final note, it has been encouraging to see some young visitors come through our doors over the past month or so. This is due to the fact that our youth are inviting their friends to church. Please pray that these visitors would keep coming back and that we would effectively share the love of Christ with them. Fielding Poe

The family’s situation took a turn for the better a year ago when she found Bridge Bread. With money she earns through Bridge Bread, she was able to rent a place for her and her children to live and is working toward an associate business degree at an online university. Lawson has become a specialist in kneading the dough, parceling it into proper sizes and plumping it up before it’s loaded into shelves to rise again.” From article by M. Gillerman in The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 2/10/14. The real purpose of Bridge Bread is not about making bread - it’s about making jobs. It can’t be done without the support of churches like Winstanley. Please continue to support this program in order to help people like Amanda and her children. Thanks, the BB Committee. “Amanda Lawson spent some of the coldest nights of a St Louis winter on a bench across the street from the Main Post Office downtown with her 1-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son. Lawson, 28, was a manager at a McDonald’s until she left in the summer of 2011 to go to her mother’s funeral in another state. When she returned, her job and apartment were gone.
