After a whirlwind week-end during which Fielding, Alison, and Audrey Poe met the church at a Saturday afternoon open house; he spoke in both Sunday morning worship services; and he was interrogated by his home church in anticipation of his ordination on September 11; Winstanley Baptist Church unanimously and enthusiastically voted to call Fielding as our minister of students and education. What a day! The search committee—comprised of Paul Flahan, Stuart Harrier, Sarah Lancaster, Jeff Saunders, Linda Spradling, Dina Stidham, and Jerry Wylie—concluded its work with this recommendation to the church. Immediately following the vote, Fielding, Alison and Audrey joined the congregation and greeted their new church family. As pastor, I am both happy and thrilled! And get this. I don’t recall an instance where I have served in which a staff member was called one day and began work the next, but this was the case with Fielding. He has hit the ground, running, and the next days and weeks will be exciting.

One of the affirmations I mentioned regarding our filling this position is that giving is up this year. In order to meet the financial demands of this full-time position, we needed to increase our giving by 7%. Year-to-date we have increased it by 6%. I ask only that you bear in mind our commitment and the continued need for strong stewardship. Speaking of stewardship, as of this week, the debt on the original church building loan stands at $94,997.94. We are within shouting distance of paying this off, my friends! Within shouting distance! These are good, glorious, and hopeful days for Winstanley Baptist Church. Be sure you are present for the single morning worship service on September 11, Anniversary Sunday at 10:55. Then, if you can join those of us who will be attending Fielding’s ordination service at Parkway Baptist Church in St. Louis on Anniversary Day evening, that will be all the better!

What Being a Deacon Means to Me...When Pastor Steve first approached me about becoming a deacon, I thanked him for the opportunity and told him I would give it some serious thought and prayer. Following my initial meeting with Pastor Steve, I began to pray that God would give me both wisdom and courage to obey His leading as I wrestled with this important decision. It was during this time that I felt what could be best described as little reminders of God's faithfulness. For one thing, my part-time (if you call 40-50 hours a week part-time) job became a full time career, complete with a raise, benefits and most importantly, a regular schedule. This brought to mind other times when God had proved His faithfulness, as well as one of my favorite verses from the bible, Romans 8:28, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose." Here was yet another example of God's goodness to me and confirmation that He was working on my behalf so that I could do His will. As a result, I became increasingly convinced that part of that purpose was for me to begin the process of becoming a deacon. I knew that if I was going to truly commit to this purpose, I needed to have a better understanding of what would be required. What does it mean to be a deacon and how can I be faithful in this role even as God continues to show His faithfulness to me? For answers, I turned to a deacon who I felt had clearly demonstrated what it meant to be a deacon, Dan Holderfield. At my request, Dan arranged for me to meet with Steve and him, so I could ask questions about the role of deacon. Dan began the meeting with prayer and by the end of the meeting I was convinced that God was calling me to this specific role and I agreed to begin the process of becoming a deacon. What does being a deacon mean to me? In my limited time as a deacon in training, I have found that being a deacon requires me to surrender to God's leading in order that I may faithfully love and serve Christ and His church. My family enjoyed a wonderful weekend getting to know you, worshipping with you, and becoming a part of Winstanley. We greatly appreciate the warm welcome we received, along with the many words of encouragement and support. For me, one of the highlights of the weekend was hearing the stories of longtime members of the church. We were surrounded by many who have dedicated much of their lives to a single body of believers, which speaks of the faithfulness of Winstanley members. While Alison and I enjoyed our interactions with you, we also noticed that our daughter Audrey had a great time as well. She keeps talking about her new friends at church, and I think she is even a bit obsessed with her new Sunday school class! As I write this on my first Wednesday morning at Winstanley, I am in eager expectation of my first night with our youth! It will be a joy to lead a ministry, by God’s grace, where students will come to faith in Jesus and grow in their relationship with him. I am also excited to work alongside other church members who are eager to invest in our youth and families. Winstanley, please continue to pray for God’s working in this time of transition. Please continue to pray for the spiritual condition of our youth and those who will lead them. Thank you for your prayers and support. Alison and I look forward to serving the Lord and growing with you at Winstanley. Fielding Poe

“A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” Proverbs 11:23-29 In Sunday School on August 21, this passage reminded us to embrace the Christian virtue of generosity. Buying Bridge Bread products is a great way to do this. Remember that Bridge Bread is able to turn 75 cents out of every bread sale dollar into sustaining, supportive employment for the bakers.
