Mother’s Day Offering Baptist Children’s Home Our Goal: $1,500

Nobody told us we would fill the hill in a day. Or a week. Or a month. But God did ask of us consistent discipleship and unbending witness. That’s what we have tried to demonstrate, and the result has been a host of different people, visiting on Winstanley Hill. Witness the massive Easter Egg hunt on April 15, and the packed house for the Metro East Community Chorale a week later. We are trying to present opportunities for new people to become acquainted with Winstanley. At the same time we are trying to build relationships with people that lead to conversations about Jesus. It’s really that simple. And it’s really that important. Publicity cannot do the jo b alone. Relationships do not develop overnight. But faithfulness to God over time makes a difference, and that’s what fills the hill. After all, forty of our folks cared enough to do evangelism training, and many more are praying each for ten people to

come to know Christ. Our next two really public events are the Mothers Day banquet and the Broadway show. Couple invitations to those with a word about Jesus, and let’s see what we get. * * * If you’re like me, you regularly receive “save the date” communications about upcoming weddings and other events. Here are my “save the date” recommendations for you.  July 9-14, Vacation Bible School  July 22-29, mission trip to Princeton, West Virginia  September 10, Anniversary Sunday (when it looks as though we will celebrate the pay-off of our major building debt, leaving only the $50,000 secondary debt or less) Keep up the excitement, commitment, and prayers. Grateful to be your pastor, Dr. Steve

In 2011, 2012, and 2013, Nancy went to a small rural village in Kenya, Africa, and taught music in Heritage Academy, a primary school opened by a very dear friend. I went for one month 3 times in each of those years. Needless to say, I fell in love with this place, the children, and the vulnerable widows rearing these children, usually alone. I seriously prayed about and considered living there for a time.

In the church library… “A Dream to Follow” by Lauraine Snelling

The school was opened in 2007 with 50 children meeting in a rented mud hut. More and more villagers wanted their children at Heritage, and 3 temporary tin buildings with dirt floors were erected within the following year. There are now 11 permanent buildings on this primary and secondary school campus with 850+ students. Every single building has been donated by various sponsors. The school is totally debt-free, as my friend strongly believes that if God is in it, their needs will be supplied as God sees fit.

“What Once We Loved” by Jane Kirkpatrick

Children are able to attend Heritage Academy because of people like you who choose to sponsor them through monthly or yearly gifts. Several of our Sunday School classes and individuals at Winstanley presently sponsor children at Heritage Academy in Makutano, Kenya, Africa.

“Gideon’s Gift” by Karen Kingsbury

This wonderful growth has revealed another opportunity to sponsor the academy. Many teachers and students walk some distance to and from school. If a bicycle was available, their travel time would be reduced by 75% and their travel would be safer, especially for the women and girls. The cost for a nice bike in Kenya is $100. The Winstanley Cyclists, a group of fourteen members, are having a Bike-A-Thon on May 13th to raise funds to buy bicycles. We will have cyclists riding 15, 25, and even 75 miles. If you or your Sunday School class feel led to sponsor a rider or fund some or all of a bike, you can indicate this on the sponsor sheet on the bulletin board. When you make out your gift, please designate it “Bikes for Kenya”. If you have questions, please talk to David Harrier. Thank you, Nancy Lawrence and David Harrier

I did my best to shoot everyone in sight. And they were doing their best to shoot me too. Many of my victims were students from Winstanley. The rest were complete strangers. My problem was that I couldn’t tell who was on my side and who wasn’t. So I just took aim and fired like a wildman. It was great. And because a battle like this will leave you feeling famished, we took a short break for pizza and soda. After that, it was game on again. If you haven’t ever played laser tag, you really ought to try it. No, you aren’t too old. It just might relieve some stress. And it can be good exercise too, as you attempt to dodge those laser beams coming at you from the front and back, not to mention your right and left sides. I have to give a shout-out to Evan Shepard for recommending this activity for our youth. We had a blast (no pun intended) playing laser tag at the Edge in Belleville last Friday night! I am looking forward to more excitement in May as many of our students will be graduating from eighth grade. Time to move on up to the big leagues of high school! We will also be making our final preparations for summer camp in June. Please continue to pray for our students as they seek to end the school year well. Pray that this summer will be a time of spiritual growth for them too.

NEWS NOTES Garrison Hall was teeming with children and adults on April 15, for our second annual Easter Egg Hunt. Coordinated by Laura Osborn, the event included games, food, the telling (and re-enacting by youth) of the Easter story, and, of course, hundred of Easter eggs. Approximately sixty-five children and a host of family members were in attendance. The Metro East Community Chorale performed at Winstanley on Sunday afternoon, April 23, to a full house. Monica O’Dell and her committee hosted a reception which followed the concert. Amazed Chorale members said no church had ever given them a reception before. Once again Garrison Hall was full.
