Winchester Team Updates Today I am happy to announce the appointment of TJ Scott to the position of Assistant General Managers with the Club. TJ has been with Winchester since 2017 as the Director of Club Operations. Previous to that, TJ was with Intercontinental Hotels in Monterey. He has a Business Administration degree from Cal State University Monterey Bay. With the increase in our membership numbers and his strong hospitality background, he is the perfect fit for this position. He and his wife and two children live in Antelope. Please congratulate TJ when you see him.

I also want to welcome James Red Goleman to the Winchester Family. James is the son of Winchester’s Food and Beverage Manager, Kevin Goleman. James was born last Wednesday, and he and his mother, Jess, are doing well. Pat Finlen General Manager

Agronomy Update: With less than two months left in the rainy season, we hope for some more rain before it’s over. This winter started wet with heavy rains, but since then, we have gone through a stretch (January 7th to March 4th) with no measurable rain events. If this dry trend continues, it will be a challenging summer from an irrigation and compaction standpoint for our fairways. I encourage you to partner up in a cart or walk if you are able. With cooler temperatures and less mowing during the winter, we have completed some projects and training for our staff. We also started incorporating hand mowing greens instead of a riding triplex mower. Some benefits of this are it allows us to produce faster green speeds at higher mowing heights, and hand mowing has a lighter footprint and less wear and tear on the greens. We will continue this into the growing season during stressful times. The most important area we have worked on this winter is the irrigation system. Our system is 22 years old and is at the point that components are starting to fail. We have proactively replaced some components such as irrigation heads, software, and other smaller items before they have failed. Others, such as pump components, are replaced when they fail. Just recently, one of our pump components failed and had to be replaced. This component lasted 22 years, and since installation, there have been four upgrades to this item. We will continue to replace items as they fail, so when you see work being done, it is our staff replacing failed parts. Also, during the winter, we have been sodding worn-out edges of some of our bunkers. These areas occur when there is only one area for the bunker machine to enter and exit the bunker, and the surrounding turf becomes worn down due to repeated traffic. We regraded these areas and modified other bunker areas to allow for multiple access points. With that said, we are excited to begin the 2022 golf season. Golf Maintenance will start the year fully staffed, with most employees already having two or more years of experience. We are excited to elevate our standard of playing conditions and details throughout the property. Jason Conrad Golf Course Superintendent jconrad@winchestercountryclub.com
