01 CONTOURS IN THE AIR TALL BUILDING TYPOLOGY IN CENTRAL, HONG KONG Academic work HKU 2019 Spring Design Studio THEME : SPATIAL DENSITY INSTRUCTOR : MICHAEL KOKORA Named as the 'vertical city', tall buildings become the dominant architectual structures in Hong Kong. This is a city where life is lived three-dimensionally,pedestrian circulations no longer stay on the satisty different needs. The studio's emphasis is on designing a skyscraper typology for commercial buildings and how density manifests internally and externally as a whole to the cityscape. The project works intensively in physical model form (sketch/concept/presentation) to generate ideas for spatial and structural innovation through experimentations with materials and crafting techniques. My design intends to challenge the perceptual transparency of spaces, according to the nature of their occupation, through the curvature of overlapping mesh skins. The typology questions the potential of constructing an organic framework for both interior space and the skeleton of a building situating at the heart of Central. With continuous external and internal skins, spaces with different degrees of visibility are formed, which distinguish spaces of different usages, such as the working area and public gathering area. The layering of partitions expects to create a surreal inside-out experience for both the users and passer-bys in the city. For the structural design, the building takes an approach of using exoskeleton (diagrid steel frame) and core for main supportings, which presents with more open spaces. The site is surrounded by buildings and public areas. Adapting to the site conditions with extensive circulations raising above the ground, a network of footbridges is included in the design. It will connect to neighboring buildings and the Chater Garden with a viewing platform and sheltered corridor.

02 HYDROLINK A SPA CENTER IN CENTRAL, HONG KONG Academic work HKU 2018 Fall Design Studio THEME : RETHINKING EDINBURGH PLACE INSTRUCTOR : ZHOU YING TEAM : JACK TAM Being the northern part in Hong Kong, the Central district is the core business and proximity to Victorian Harbor, there are numerous developments done to make the land more 'satisfying'. Reclamation, forms the unique geography with more available land but leads to the loss of littoral spaces. The tight arrangment of buildings with only a narrow gap in between forms the urban landscape of Hong Kong - skyscrapers with different heights form the mountainous land. Different type of infrastructure are used as connections in the society, both physically and mentally. To explore the use of connectors in the area, a reseach on the nearby bridges and tunnels is done. Considering the existing connections between commerical of spa center and publIc elevated ground is proposed to create a journey to the waterfront. The design applies the concept of solid and void to separate different audiences, aiming at creating new sensations for both bathing and pedestrian walkway for the public and private circulations respectively.

HYDROLINK AS BATHING EXPERIENCE An unique bathing experience is created by the diamondcut shape, forming spaces with different enclosure and provacy. Each bathing space seems to be isolated from the city, yet somehow connected with the infrastructure. The idea of hollowing out a solid to provide the geometric interior space helps to create a distinct light source from the ceiling. The amount of light entering the space depends on the size of opening on ceiling, which contributes to create bathing spaces with different levels of privacy too.

HYDROLINK AS AN ATTRACTOR The spa center serves different functions on different levels. Therefore, the facade needs to satisfy different level of privacy according to the uses. Instead of having a distinct separating pattern with gradual change of density will be used on the transparent facade, so people can enjoy light and view on

03 CO-LIVING LANE A LILONG IN FAYUANFANG, SHANGHAI Academic work HKU Shanghai Study Centre 2018 Spring Design Studio THEME : URBAN ARCHITECTURE INSTRUCTOR : LIU KENAN TEAM : QUBBIE YUAN In Shanghai, the traditional lilong (alleyway or lane) housing made up more than 50% of the urban fabric since the 1940s. FaYuanFang is one of the lilong communities built by the French, results in a mixture of western architectural style and eastern living style. The name ( individual wealthy family. However, its nature is changed after the Cultural Revolution, when more than one family occupy the house due to lack of residential spaces. Most interior spaces such as the kitchens and toilets become shared areas. Nowadays, the lilong housing compounds are being replaced by new gated communities of luxury housing towers surrounded by landscaped parks or paved parking. On the other hand, residents in the remaining lilong houses take similar approach to gated or 'privatize' their own area from the public lane in between houses. Spaces between buildings are whose separation from other buildings is more important than the relation between them. To explore the change in permeability between the lilong houses, a reseach on all the through mapping and photo documentations. In order to reconnect the neighborhood and improve the existing living conditions, a design of co-living lilong is proposed in between two rows of houses. A combination of temporary exhibition and communal space is designed as well to create a central interacting space among the Lilong. The design applies the concept of solid and void to separate private and public areas, aiming at improving their living spaces and blurring the boundary between them.

04 BLURRED JUXTAPOSITION AN ENTERTAINMENT HUB IN PITTSBURGH, THE UNITED STATES Academic work UMICH 2019 Fall Design Studio THEME : PLAYTIME INSTRUCTOR : PETER HALQUIST TEAM : JESSIE MINDEL Within the cultural district of PIttsburgh, many nearby theatres house formal performances, which is a typology that the 'Entertainment Hub' ought to challenge. With exploration of aerial sports and viewer experience, a multinature performance soace facilitates atypical and typical ways of both performance and spectatorship. Typical performance related to a ticketed event in which a performance is curated for the enjoyment of the audience translates to a formal performance and a formal viewing experience. On the other hand, an atypical performance is, one in which 'performers' are engaging ina a sport or activity while bystanders may watch. This blends itself to informal performance and informal spectatorship, in which people may come and go as they please with the activity to view this 'performance' from different perspectives.

Ltd AREA : GFA 200,000 sqm The project was designed about a decade ago as a large shopping mall and two hotel towers with a retail podium. The construction however was halted after all the concrete structure had been built, resulting in a ghostly, empty skeleton that occupied the site for many years. Benoy’s involvement started in 2019 when we were asked to redesign the façades of the development and the landscaping of the central plaza. The large shopping mall was converted into a rich variety of retail, culture, art and entertainment offerings. We redesigned the character of this large building in a way that connects with its local context and is deeply rooted in the local culture. The new design of the main façade references the tradition of Sichuan shadow play theatres with a contemporary reinterpretation, using animated LED screens and a translucent building envelope to create a dynamic “light and shadow” spectacle. 30
