Heatin’ It Up As of Wednesday morning, seven boats competing at the Storm Trysail Club’s Block Island Race Week XXV had perfect scorelines in their respective classes: Damian Emery’s J/105 Eclipse (Shoreham, NY; competing in the J/105 East Coast Championship), Malcolm Gefter’s Melges 32 Celeritas (Newport, RI; PHRF 1), Brad Porter’s Evelyn 32 XLR8 (Westbrook, CT; PHRF 3), Charles Townsend’s S&S 39 Fidelio (Middletown, RI; Cruising Spinnaker), Jim Anderson’s Farr 395 Skye (Riverside, CT; Double-handed), Burt Keenan’s Cat Ketch 49 Acadia (Hilton Head, SC; Cruising Non-Spinnaker), and Dave Curtis’ Taylor 38 Rival (Marblehead, MA; a strong contender in the PHRF 4 East Coast Championship and the overall winner of the Round the Island Race on Tuesday). But with three races scheduled in most
of the 19 classes and thunderstorms over the mainland generating an unsettled airmass on the Sound, how many would retain a unbroken chain after the smoke had cleared? “We were happy to get three races in yesterday,” said On-the-Water Co-Chair Dick Neville. “Conditions were difficult for both the sailors and the Race Committee due to changes in wind velocity, shifts and the current. We’re aiming for two races today and Friday for the windward-leeward courses and one each day for the Cruising classes.” Out on the Red Circle, the U.S. Naval Academy Sailing Squadron’s TP52 Corsair had a great upwind leg in the day’s first race, but shortly after they set their spinnaker it suddenly ripped completely in half. In a truly impressive display of seamanship and teamwork, the midshipmen* had a new kite flying in well under two minutes and went on to win that race. Robin Aisher, the guest of honor at this year’s Race Week, is sailing on the legendary Sparkman & Stephens yawl Black Watch in the 10-boat Cruising Non-Spinnaker class. “Lee Reichart [Race Week XXV Chairman] invited me to give a prize that was given by the Island Sailing Club of Cowes all those years ago, and I was delighted to be asked to go on Black Watch. She feels better than a fiberglass, aluminium or carbon boat, she has a lovely motion about her, and she got along very well in the light weather. I’ve never been to Block Island before, and it’s a glorious place. Everyone’s enjoying themselves, from the hot shots to those on the cruising boats. The ambience and comradeship are great...I’ll come again!” In all likelihood, there are more young sailors competing in this Race Week than any of the preceding 24 biennial regattas, a testament to the initiatives of the Storm Trysail Club and Storm Trysail Foundation to foster enthusiasm for the sport and develop the next generation of capable offshore sailors. Sea Scout Ship 6 from Norwalk, CT is competing in the Cruising NonSpinnaker class aboard their Tripp 37 Celebration II, a veteran of many Block Island Race Weeks. “I’ve been on mainsheet the last couple of days,” said Roisin Burke. “We haven’t gotten the result we’re looking for this week, but we’re learning a lot and we’ve really been able to improve our sail trim. Back in Norwalk we don’t have a chance to compete against these great tacticians and trimmers, and it’s great to see how we measure up.” Jib trimmer Michael Barnaba added, “We’re doing the best sailing we’ve ever done, by far.” The Ship 6 crew dyed red patches in their hair to match Celebration II’s hull, and

they’re also rockin’ the best team shirts at Race Week. “We have a ‘No Whining Babies’ symbol on the back,” Michael explained, “along with our slogan from our former skipper, Bill Austin: Sail Tough or Stay Home!” DC Sail, the community sailing program of the National Maritime Historical Foundation in Washington, DC, is represented at Race Week by a team of teenage sailors aboard the J/105 Buckaroo. “I’ve been having a blast,” enthused Aaron Beguelin, 16, who has also organized a sailing team at his high school. “The people are really great here, and I think this is an excellent opportunity. We’re sailing against some really great teams, and our team is on a learning curve. We’re improving every day and moving up in the standings, and we’d definitely like to come back…in a few years we should be kickin’ people’s butts!” Chase Reynolds, a sixth grader from Southport, CT, is thoroughly enjoying his first Race Week aboard his father Charlie’s Flying Tiger 10M Red Stripe. “I squirrel down the spinnaker and I sit on the rail,” he said. “We’re doing OK, and we hope to move up by having better starts. The best thing about Race Week is the people. Everyone here is having a great time!” ■ * In Wednesday’s edition we mistakenly referred to the crew of the U.S. Naval Academy’s TP52 Corsair as “plebes.” In fact, the young men and women of this exceptionally well trained team are midshipmen. Our editors (who earned degrees at liberal arts schools) regret the error. Go Navy! ** The USNA motto is “From Knowledge, Sea Power.”

This is a sort of ‘roll of the dice’ forecast. A front will be close by all day. If we have showers and thundershowers, we may see Easterlies, but sunshine will favor the front to the North with fresher S-SW winds A few early showers and a light/variable wind, then some sunshine late morning/afternoon with South/Southwest wind up to 10-16 knots. Late afternoon showers and thunderstorms will appear with a Northwest wind becoming Northeast again.
Storm Trysail Club 2013 Block Island Race Week News • Thursday 9
A Few Race Week Memories Organizers for the first Block Island Race Week were expecting perhaps 75 boats in 1965, and 125 (and some 600 sailors) showed up. “We didn’t know how everyone was going to feel about it,” STC Past Commodore Vinny Monte-Sano told Sailing World contributor Neil Rabinowitz in 1987. “The Governor’s party got off the very first Sunday, with the Governor himself launching the festivities in a downpour like pitchforks…it was a deluge. We didn’t know what to do until we looked out later and saw everyone dressed in yellow slickers and boots, drinking in the pouring rain and having a ball just slopping around in mud over their ankles…the STC was the first group to expose Mount Gay to the American public.” Parties have always been an integral part of Race Week. While perusing the race reports from the 1960s, 70s and 80s, we sensed that there might have been just a bit more mirth and merriment during Race Weeks past. From Skip Mansfield: Arthur “Tuna” Wullschleger, the reigning chairman that year, sent young Hans Isbrandtsen to the other side of the island to pick up some gear. The only vehicle Hans could locate was the very large Hertz truck that had been used by the club to bring supplies to the island. Hans went across the island and hit a very sturdy branch that tore the roof off the top of the truck. Upon his return to the duty office Hans, who never lacked for a sense of humor, timidly asked Mr. Wullschleger if he felt the club would mind returning the equipment to Larchmont in a convertible truck.” From Steve Moore: “In 1975, Blaze, a Carter 39 won the Everett B. Morris

Trophy, which is awarded to the boat that is deemed to have had the best performance of the week. Blaze was owned by Harold Oldak and Ed du Moulin, and [STC Past Commodore] Rich du Moulin was the skipper. “In 1979 Blaze got her rudder hung up on the anchor line of Bob Timken’s Hatteras, which was serving as the starting pin. It took some time for them to get out of their unhappy situation. “Since they knew they’d gone from the penthouse to the outhouse, the next day the Blaze crew showed their good senses of humor by arriving at the starting line with paper bags over their heads.” From Charles ‘Butch’ Ulmer: “A few sailors, who had been a little overserved, were walking back toward the docks when they passed a pasture with hoses and decided it would be fun to ride them back. They got the horses down to the dock and tried wrestling them aboard [STC Past Commodore] Paul Hoffman’s committee boat. The dock planks gave way and the horses fell into the water. The horses disappeared in the night, and the next morning they were about to arrest these guys for committing murder on a horse when someone discovered them in a pasture around the far side of the pond.” From Vinny Monte-Sano: “We had no hoosegow, so people got pretty wild, and we let them up to a point and then threw them off the island,” said MonteSano. “One time a guy got out of hand, and we had to handcuff him to a tractor until the ferry returned to get him back to the mainland.” The previously published material above was reprinted with the permission of the Storm Trysail Club. Storm Trysail Club 2013 Block Island Race Week News • Thursday 11
Race Week: It’s a Family Affair Innumerable boats crewed by two, three, four or more members of the same family (often including two or even three generations) have participated in Storm Trysail Club’s Block Island Race Week since the first one was held in 1965, and that’s one of the things that makes this event great. Perhaps the most well known Race Week family is the Storcks of Huntington, NY, the recipients of Scuttlebutt’s “Sailing Family of the Year” award in 2010. There are three Storcks sailing on John Storck, Jr.’s J/80 Rumor this week, including John’s son John Storck III, his daughter Kaity Storck and her fiancée Baker Potts. Also aboard is Sam Williams, a recent Dartmouth grad. Space does not permit listing every boat on the 2013 Crew List with two people who share a surname on board, but boats with three crew members from one family include Bill Rogers’ J/109 Big Boat with three Hannahs aboard, three Evans on Ganson Evans’ Farr 395 Old School, three Praleys on Jimmy Praley’s J/80 Gromit, three Ketchams on Bill Ketcham’s J/44 Maxine, three Ways on Raymond Way’s Irwin Citation Citation, three Zaleskis aboard Quentin Thomas’ X-41 Pendagon, three Danglemans on John Perreault’s C&C 43 Pretty Woman, three Bradys on Chris Brady’s Colgate 26 Speedway Boogie, and three Heins on Peter Hein’s J/120 Varekai. Boat with four or more family crew include Jeff Willis’ J/44 Challenge IV with four members of the Willis family, Jim Grundy’s Farr 400 Grundoom with four Grundys, five McLeans aboard Hugh McLean’s J/109 Shearwater, five Raves on Don & Rick Rave’s J/44 Resolute, five members of the Rich family on Tom Rich’s Peterson

42 Settler, and five Sykes on Macrae Syke’s J/109 Zuma. To the best of our knowledge (because some skippers did not submit a crew roster!), the boat with the largest family crew at Block Island Race Week XXV is Peter Hilgendorff’s Evelyn 32 Night Fury, with an amazing seven Hilgendorffs on board! ■

Jakob Honored Jakob Isbrandtsen was born in Brooklyn and started sailing at a young age on the Great South Bay. His father bought him a 27-footer, and the moment he stepped into the boat, he knew he was hooked and that sailing would be something he would do for the rest of his life. Jakob’s father was born in Denmark, and he started the Isbrandtsen Shipping Line. There is a book written about the senior Isbrandtsen called The American Viking. Jakob was only 31 years old when his dad passed away, and he took over the company. Shortly thereafter, he bought the American Export Company and merged it into American Export/Isbrandtsen Line. There is no question who is the architect of the Storm Trysail Club’s Block Island Race Week. After competing in several Cowes Week in the UK, Jakob said, “It was only right the US have a race week similar.” He knew of just the spot: Block Island, Rhode Island. Why? Well, Block resembles the Isle of Wight where Cowes Week occurs. So, in 1965, after Jakob assembled a strong team and announcements were made by mail and word-of-mouth, Storm Trysail Club’s “Block Island Week” was off and running. Two of the Co-Chairs for the first Block Island Race Week were Everett Morris and Arthur ‘Tuna’ Wullschleger. Jakob was the current Storm Trysail Commodore,
and Wullschleger would later become Commodore. Both did yeoman’s work making it highly successful. These men logged countless hours organizing all the logistics, and paperwork that had to be done to make the all-important inaugural event extraordinary. Jakob and his wife, Pat, had seven children – six girls and one boy. All toed the line with a very strong work ethic instilled by their father. Not knowing how the first Race Week would work out, Jakob had all the kids on high alert in the event they were needed. And they were. Some poured sodas for the competitors after racing. Others served food at the various dinners every day. They all worked very hard, and contributed to the success of Race Week. Jakob was a world-class racer on boats like Hother, Windrose, Good News, and lastly, Running Tide – all well known in sailing circles and all highly competitive. Jakob won his class in the Newport Bermuda Race, and other distance races. He won the SORC with Running Tide, and was the youngest skipper in the 1938 Newport to Bermuda Race sailing his first real ocean racing yacht, Hother. He raced several times at Cowes Week with a series of different boats and placed respectfully in all. Windrose was on the winning Admiral’s Cup team in 1960, and he was part of the NYYC America’s Cup Syndicate, along with its skipper of the era, Bus Mosbacher. Anytime Jakob raced, it was always under the burgee of the NYYC or the Storm Trysail Club. Last night at the STC member’s party, Jakob was presented the Abrams Family Trophy, the highest honor one can achieve for Block Island Race Week. We, the STC members and the participants of Race Week, owe so much to Jakob for his vision, foresight and leadership in making Block Island Race Week the largest weeklong big boat regatta in the US. Thank you, Jakob. ■

Faces at the Races
Brett Berkley Stratos What is the funniest story you can tell about another crew member? Our crew was sailing in the Stratford Shoal one year and our usual bowman Pierce Rockmen was absent, so Nathan Barnett filled in for him. We were coming up to the last leg of the race and our captain Marcus asked Nathan seventeen times if he run the tapes. We look over and Nate is buried trying to run all the tapes. We’re in the last leg and up goes the chute but only a quarter of the way and stops dead. The remarkable thing is that it only took us about 30 seconds to recover! Ralph DiMattia Shamrock Sensation What is the funniest story you can tell about another crew member? I’ve been sailing with my son RJ for about 30 years and we always have a good time. During one of the races at Block Island Race Week, Jimmy Corbett was working both the jib and the mainsail. He was stretched on the two sides of the boat. It was hysterical! My son was watching and yells, “Get the main in quicker!” The whole crew had a good laugh about it.
