Message from the Chairman

About Windermere

Welcome to the Annual Windermere Golf Day!

For over 150 years, Windermere has been providing help and resources to people so they can live life to their full potential. Our ultimate goal is to help create strong, connected communities where our services are no longer needed.

As Chairman of Windemere Child and Family Services, I have been involved in the Golf Day since it’s inception. I am extremely passionate about the event and continue to enjoy connecting business people to their local community through golf. The event attracts a wide variety of small and large businesses across Melbourne, and provides a wonderful networking opportunity. Once again, we have secured exclusive access to Kingston Heath Golf Club, Australia’s number one golf course, where you will enjoy a wonderful golfing experience, with five star service. The Windemere Classic is heralded by many as “one of the best” and each year the competition grows. We welcome back and thank our regular supporters and look forward to introducing more of you to the Windermere family. In 2012, Windermere assisted more than 9,000 local children, families and individuals, and are calling on your support so we can continue providing vital services to those most in need in our community. I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday 23rd of April, for what will be a superb day of golf. Carl Strachan, Chairman

With our head office in Narre Warren and service provision from multiple locations, Windermere is one of the fastest growing independent community service organisations throughout Melbourne’s South-East, and beyond. Underpinning our commitment to every person we help is the belief that for children, families and individuals to find true wellbeing, we need a strong and nurturing community where ‘everyone is someone’. We offer a wide range of professional services including counselling, housing support, disability services, childcare and more – all with the aim of helping people to get their lives back on track. Most importantly, many of our services are free. The 2013 Windermere Classic Golf Day will assist in raising much needed funds for the Suicide Prevention Program. Over the last 12 months, we have delivered nine general awareness and training sessions to over 400 students and local community members. We are hoping to more than double this number in 2013, however with no government funding available for the Suicide Prevention Training, Windermere relies on community support and donations. $420 is needed to train one (1) person in ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training). This two day workshop teaches participants to recognise when someone may be at risk of suicide and provides them with specific strategies in suicide first aid, to increase immediate safety and link to further help.

Kingston Heath Golf Club Kingston Heath Golf Club is ranked as Australia’s best golf course and 27th in the world, it enjoys an enviable reputation for its superb conditioning all year round. The 18 holes were built on only 125 hectares (most courses in the modern era are built on over 250 hectares), it is perfectly manicured and its bunkering and clever use of dips and hollows visually fools the non-observant golfer. The course is aesthetically pleasing, but if you wildly deviate from the fairway, the rough (comprising long grass, tea tree and sandy scrapes) will test your ability to get the ball back into play. The three par 3 holes are a feature of Kingston Heath and show off the classic, natural bunkering – a fantastic feature of this course. The fifteenth hole, in particular, is a real test. An uphill par 3 of moderate length, the path to the hole is surrounded by a myriad of bunkers (some of them very deep) all waiting to swallow the errant tee shot. If you reach the putting surface, par is still not guaranteed as the undulating green gives up more 3 putts than 1 putts.

12

The remaining finishing holes are long par 4’s and can ruin an otherwise good score. The 16th is known in golfing circles as the hole where Greg Norman took a 9 on his way to losing a tournament at Kingston Heath in the 1990’s. Norman carved his tee shot into the right hand tea tree and it was all downhill from there. Kingston Heath has hosted the Australian Open 8 times (7 men’s & 1 women’s) as well as hosting the 2009 Australian Masters. This event saw world number 1 golfer Tiger Woods grace the fairways of The Heath, and he didn’t disappoint, displaying superb shot-making over 4 rounds to take out the yellow jacket. A dedicated website for the 2013 Windermere Classic, has been set up through GOLFSelect to provide useful pre-game information to all players, as well as complete post-game results and any photos taken on the day.
