Windermere

CLASSIC Wednesday 20th April, 2016

The Victoria Golf Club

Park Road, Cheltenham

Proudly Sponsored by

Message from Windermere In 2016 I would be delighted to welcome back and thank our regular supporters as well as introducing all newcomers to the Windermere community. Last year’s participants significantly contributed to the vital support services that Windermere provides to children, families and individuals in our community. I’d like to once again extend a warm invitation to join us so we can continue to provide these important services.

Welcome to the 2016 Windermere Classic Golf Day It has been 21 years since I started the Annual Golf Classic for Windermere and I, along with everyone involved at Windermere, are very passionate about this exciting day. The Classic is a highlight on the Windermere calendar and continues to connect business people to their local community through golf. In fact, every year since its foundation, the Classic has grown as more businesses join us to entertain their guests, enjoy networking on one of Australia’s best courses while supporting the great work of Windermere.

Register early to ensure you don’t miss your opportunity to be part of this wonderful event – please join us on the sandbelt on Wednesday 20th April, for what will be an outstanding day of charity golf.

Sophie’s Story “I feel sad all the time. I feel like crying over anything. Why do I feel that way? Nobody understands me. Nobody can help me.” These were Sophie’s words during her battle with mental illness. Her sadness was followed by self- harm, deep depression and anorexia. Her parents knew they had to act fast. “It was such an intense time”, recalls her mother, Joelle. “We reached out and explored all the professional medical care available and still that didn’t make a difference to our beautiful 16 year old daughter Sophie, our Soflet”. Despite every strategy and treatment put in place they were unsuccessful in their attempt to cure her illness and sadly, in July 2013, Sophie passed by suicide.

Two and half years on, Sophie’s parents, Joelle and Henri, accept that some of their questions will never be answered. However, by attending the LivingWorks Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) at Windermere, they have learnt the importance of being educated and ‘suicide aware’ and how it can help others in their community. “It’s imperative that as a community we educate ourselves, that we feel comfortable saying the word suicide and that Windermere continues to offer vital support through training to those in greatest need,” says Joelle “We support Windermere because it’s one way of honouring the life of our beautiful daughter, Sophie.”

About Windermere • Family Wellbeing to create positive We believe that everyone is behavioural changes, greater someone in our community and that understanding and respond to violence is reflected in our approach with and/or neglect those we work with everyday Windermere is an independent community service organisation working across south east Victoria to help those who need it most. Since our beginning more than 150 years ago, we have been working to create a stronger, more connected and supported community. Our support comes in many forms as we work together to find the right solutions for the many and varied complex issues faced by children, families and individuals in our community. Our aim is to get in early by providing programs and services within four primary areas:

• Childhood Development & Education including child care and services for children and adults with developmental delays and disability • Assistance and support for victims of trauma, assault and/or violent crime • C ommunity Strengthening designed to respond quickly to critical and emerging needs. Whilst we receive funding for some services from state and federal governments, others are funded solely by the generosity of our donors and sponsors through fundraising and events such as the 2016 Windermere Classic.
