For many home seekers, it’s fun to know what’s behind a home’s design. A student of UCLA’s Design School and former owner of LA-based Cal Mode Furniture, the homeowners are no strangers to creativity, so we asked for some insight into the intelligent design, space & function of their desert home. What is the #1 thing you love about your desert home? LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION! The coveted southern exposure with wide-open water, golf course & southern mountain views were worth standing in line for. This lot was, and still is, one of the builder’s Top 3 View Locations at Indian Ridge Country Club. You can change anything inside - but you can’t change the location, as they say in Real Estate. Who inspired the interior design? Ron Mann (www.ronmanndesign.com), a Northern California designer - one of Architectural Digest‘s Book of Top 100 Designers. We like his use of natural materials, use of angles and his great respect for Mother Nature. A Douglas Fir fireplace mantel and ledges, slate flooring & fireplace surround, dried ocotillo inlaid cabinetry are fun, non-destructible natural materials used in the design. We also used Design Coalition from Park City, UT to do all of our architectural carpentry renderings. How did your furniture manufacturing background influence the design? Rooms live larger when you can maximize the interior space with built-ins. We designed high-quality built-ins, such as a beautiful buffet with drawers and shelving in the redesigned family room, an over-sized sit-down center island in the kitchen that looks like a piece of furniture, birds-eye maple built-ins for the Master bedroom, a built-in beverage/microwave station & closet with drawers in a newly designed over-sized guest suite, and a completely built-in office. Also, furniture finishes, not cheap glazes, were used on the cabinetry, and all the walls & ceilings were upgraded with peek-a-boo plaster, a very expensive process. What environmentally friendly upgrades have you done? We had our home double-insulated when it was built, and recently added solar panels to take advantage of the desert’s primary resource, the Sun. We also upgraded to a tankless water heater, updated air conditioners through the Palm Desert Energy Efficiency Program, and upgraded to a Variable speed pool pump for the salt water pool/spa. What are some of the fun features of the home? We have a front-row seat to an evening bird show at sunset; we call it Bird Island. Friends love to have cocktails on our patio just to see the show. A custom built showcase bar displaying over 600 golf balls under glass from our prized collection anything could be displayed, but golf balls seem appropriate since we live on a golf course. Private outdoor retreat with a restful hammock. And, we have our own private fish pond in the desert!!
