World renowned chef Paul Bocuse, whose main restaurant l’Auberge du Pont de Collonges just outside Lyon holds three Michelin stars, has built his reputation on cooking with only the freshest, high-quality foods, and the Halles de Lyon is no exception. Built in the late 1960s, the massive food hall was extensively renovated in 2006 to its modern form of 145,000 square feet (13500 m2) when Monsieur Bocuse deemed it worthy of putting his name on. You’ll be treated to a range of offerings, from Saint-Marcellin cheese cured in red wine to the fabulously decadent dessert, tarte framboise.

F YOU KEEP UP WITH THE LATEST TRENDS IN interior design, even if you don’t for that matter, there’s a good chance you’re familiar with the work of Martyn Lawrence Bullard. The British designer’s eclectic aesthetic has drawn such celebrity clientele as Tommy Hilfiger, Cher and Eva Mendes, to name only a few. With a unique ability to manipulate one’s sense of space through a wholly original use of texture and color, Bullard has earned a spot on such lists as Architectural Digest’s AD100, Elle Décor’s A-List, Luxe Interiors + Design’s Gold List and named one of the top 25 designers by The Hollywood Reporter. Today, Bullard is widely recognized for his starring roles on Bravo TV’s Million Dollar Decorators and his newest television show, Hollywood Me (which airs in the UK). From the very beginning his career has been anything but ordinary and recently we had the pleasure of sitting down with the renowned tastemaker to discuss his entry into the business, where he sees the future of design and everything in between.
LP:
You established your eye for design at a very early age – can you touch a little bit on that and how you first got into it?
MLB: Well, I started as a sort of crazy child who was fascinated with antiques and objects and began buying and selling things when I was 12 years old. By the time I was 16, I’d built up enough inventory that I was setting up the stores in the local flea markets. Then, after getting noticed by someone at Ralph Lauren, I ended up buying things specifically for them that they would use to decorate their windows on Madison Avenue.
LP: And shortly after that you ended up in Hollywood, correct? MLB: With the money I made buying and selling things in flea markets, I was able to put myself through acting school. I started acting for a little while and came to Hollywood because I wanted to be a star, of course that took a while to achieve! But in the meantime I did a couple of movies and the producer for one of them came to my house and loved it and asked me to redo his office for him. I thought, “Well this is crazy but who knows, maybe he’ll put me in another movie!” That’s how it all started. Almost immediately after I finished that project, the president of Capitol Records called me and said, “I’ve seen your work. Would you come and do the Capitol Building?” I was about 24 and suddenly it just spiraled from there.
LP: Recently you’ve ventured into commercial projects, as well – how did that start?
MLB: I did the Jimmy Choo stores, various restaurants, a bunch of hotels, nightclubs, fashion stores. My commercial projects started about five years ago and have now really built up as I’ve done more and more. Once you’re on TV, you get more exposure with commercial companies and they start to see you more as a brand. Brands always want to join with other brands to strengthen each other, so that’s really what’s happened with the commercial work. Four Seasons recently asked me to be the face of their residences in Beverly Hills, ranging between $5 million and $45 million – I accepted of course! So I’m not only designing them, but they’re using me as the image for them. That’s a real partnership of brands merging.
LP: Do you have any favorite projects that you’ve worked on? MLB: Projects are like having children – when you’re pregnant with it, it’s painful and once you give birth to it, it becomes your immediate favorite for a while. At the moment, I’m just finishing a big project for Tommy Hilfiger. He and his wife Dee are the most amazing, wonderful people. I adore them. The home is really wild and fabulous and at the moment it’s a real favorite of mine. It’s in Miami, which of course is the big hotspot in the world right now.
LP: You’re widely known for your exotic style – is that something
LP: What do you think will be the big trends in interior design in
that evolved over time or have you always favored that aesthetic?
the near future?
MLB: A lot of the exoticism comes from the fact that I love to travel to places like Morocco, Istanbul and Egypt, and everywhere I go all the inspirations there seep into me. It’s through that I’ve come up with some of the more exotic interiors. It’s my love of travel that has brought forward my love of pattern and exoticism – that’s what I’ve fused into my designs. It’s a summation of my experiences.
MLB: The 80s are back in a big way. Brass, which was thought to be sort of passé, is huge. Brass, gold colors, everything from taps to tables to wall coverings – brass is a big, big thing. All 80s over-scaled furniture. That whole vibe is huge and we’re going to see more and more of it. Also, on the other end of the scale is art deco. Since the whole Great Gatsby vibe, art deco is back in fashion and design and we’re literally going to see it everywhere.
