Museums
Seattle Art Museum
Since 1933, SAM, as it’s affectionally known by locals, has been the visual arts center of the Pacific Northwest. With three locations, including the Olympic Sculpture Garden and the newly renovated Seattle Asian Art Museum, SAM is home to art that spans global geographies from ancient history to modern masterpieces. Combined, the collection represents the PNW as a crossroads of cultures and ideas, as well as a testament to the region’s history of building bridges between them.
Museum of Flight
As the birthplace of Boeing, it’s only logical that Puget Sound is home to the largest independent non-profit air and space museum in the world. The Museum of Flight is a collection of more than 150 aircrafts ranging from gliders to lunar modules from the first century of flight. Artifacts on display include uniforms, medals and pins, models, aircraft instruments, and engines. The onsite library is an aviation enthusiast’s dream, holding tens of thousands of books, manuals, journals, and media clippings.
Washington State History Museum
The Washington State Historical Society was established in 1891 to preserve the state’s history, which it now shares at the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma. From early Native American culture to the fauna that now call this place home, artifacts and informative displays at the museum tell a diverse range of Washington’s stories, including those about centuries of immigration, local industry and how we use our natural resources, and how the tools of media and communication connect us all.
Springʼs cool and rainy days are perfect for indoor exploration at one of the Pacific Northwest’s myriad of museums. Whether you are an art aficionado, a history buff, or a pop culture connoisseur, one of these treasures is sure to provide an entertaining day or afternoon.
Puget Sound Navy Museum
Washington State is proud of its military history. Nowhere is this pride more evident than at the Puget Sound Navy Museum in Bremerton. The museum first opened in 1954 and is now one of ten museums operated by the United States Navy. Visitors can dive into naval history by getting a feel for daily life on the USS Nimitz, touring the Patrol Boats of Puget Sound exhibit, and exploring the thousands of artifacts in historic Building 50.
Museum of Glass
The Museum of Glass is the premier destination to admire the beauty that can be rendered from fire and a deft hand. The catalyst for change in what had been a long-neglected part of Tacoma, the museum is now the center of a thriving arts center, with six other museums within walking distance. In addition to curating a treasure trove of stunning glass art, the Museum of Glass is a maker’s space. Workshops for children and adults let you try your hand at glassmaking, or you can simply admire the skill of the artisans at work.
Museum of Pop Culture
The Museum of Pop Culture is as much about interactive experiences as it is about marveling at some of pop culture’s most iconic artifacts. The building itself, which was designed by legendary architect Frank O. Gehry and inspired by smashed guitars, was created to “evoke the rock-n-roll experience.” Whether you try your hand at the turntable in the Sound Lab or simply appreciate the behind-thescenes look at some of your favorite moments from music and film, you’re sure to leave MOPOP feeling like a rockstar.
Nestled between Stanwood and Whidbey Island, Camano Island is a quiet beauty with a lot to offer, whether you’re there for a day, a weekend, or a lifetime. Come for the Mother’s Day Art Tour and walks on the beach; stay for the delicious farm-to-table dining and views of the Puget Sound and Olympic Mountains.
Camano Island Studio Tour
The Camano Island Studio Tour spotlights local artists and dozens of working studios on the island and in nearby Stanwood. Produced by the Camano Arts Association, a non-profit made up of local artists and art advocates, the Tour will celebrate its 25th year in 2024. Whether you’re shopping for a gift for mom or something for yourself, you’re sure to find a treasure among the paintings, ceramics, glass art, jewelry, photography, leather and textiles, and woodworking crafts. (For more about the Studio Tour, check out Local Happenings in this issue.)

Arrowhead Ranch
Cama Beach Café
This gem features mouth-watering bakery items you can eat on the spot or take-and-bake later, as well as brunch favorites including smoked salmon eggs benedict, traditional Swedish pancakes, and daily veggie and meat quiches. No matter what delicious dish you choose, you may catch a glimpse of orcas, eagles, and seals while you dine. Eat until your heart’s (or stomach’s) content, and then walk it off with a hike along the waterfront at Cama Beach State Park. (Note: you will need a Discover Pass to dine in at Cama Beach Café.)
camabeachcafe.com
Founded in 2006 by Randy and Marla Heagle, Arrowhead Ranch was designed to attract adventurers to Camano Island and to be a gathering place for the local community. A working ranch that is home to chickens, cows, goats, ducks, cats, peacocks, honeybees, and a yellow-bellied turtle named Larry, Arrowhead is also a maker’s space with metalworking, woodworking, and 3D printing workshops for all levels of experience. If you’re feeling more destructive than creative, try your hand at axe throwing. Check their calendar for seasonal events, including sales under the big tent and soapbox rally races.

Camano Island Inn
Many overnight visitors to Camano Island rent through services such as VRBO or Airbnb, but if you’re looking for a room, dining, and spa experience in one location, look no further than the Camano Island Inn. All guest rooms feature cozy beds, local artwork, and private bathrooms, and some offer special amenities such as private waterfront decks with hot tubs. Be sure to visit the Moon Gate on the property, as it is purported to bring good fortune to those who get engaged or married in front of it.
