Stop & Smell the Rosé
Though many people associate great wines with France and California, we in the Pacific Northwest know better. Forbes has claimed that Washington may be the most underrated wine region in the world.
While Washington wines come from grapes grown in vineyards largely located in the Columbia Valley in Eastern Washington, the Puget Sound region is home to a bevy of wineries and tasting rooms where you can sample these world-class vinos. Summer is a perfect time to taste what the rich soil and plentiful sun east of the mountains bring forth.

A | Dossier Wine Collective
Founded by former Seahawks wide receiver Sidney Rice and Windermere Real Estate broker Tim Lenihan, Dossier Wine Collective is the result of shared passion and true collaboration. Rice was relatively new to oenophilia when Lenihan introduced him to Washington wines. Having grown up in Yakima and spending many years in Walla Walla, Lenihan had long yearned to join the wine industry. The pair teamed up to create their own label and now host tastings of their 90+ point luxury wines in their Walla Walla tasting room, as well as at events throughout the Puget Sound region.
B | Long Shadows Winery
With a goal of growing Washington’s global reputation as a wine destination, legendary winemaker Allen Shoup has more than made his mark after 20 years leading Chateau Ste. Michelle and now at his own family winery, Long Shadows. The idea behind Long Shadows was to pair the world’s most iconic winemakers with the best grapes Washington has to offer. The result is a collection of wines that consistently dazzle the most discerning palates. If you’re curious to check out what the world’s best winemakers can do with Washington’s world-class fruit, stop by the Long Shadows tasting rooms in Walla Walla or Woodinville.
C | Delille Cellars
At Delille, the family business of winemaking goes back to Europe in the 1500s. Delille Cellars was a principal influence in establishing Washington as a viticultural region when it produced the first Bordeaux-inspired blends in the state more than 30 years ago. It was also one of the first wineries in Washington to receive the Robert Parker five-star excellence rating. The Woodinvillebased location was named Best Tasting Room by Seattle Magazine in 2021.
D | Chateau Ste. Michelle
One of the most famous wineries in Washington is located in the heart of Woodinville wine country. The beautiful grounds of Chateau Ste. Michelle are almost as famous for its annual concert series as the winery is for its long list of award-winning wines. Considered by many to be Washington State’s founding winery, the Chateau offers a variety of wine-tasting experiences, from the opportunity to be a “Winemaker for a Day” to indulging in a wine flight in a private cabana.
E | Charles Smith/K Vintners
Legendary winemaker Charles Smith is perhaps best known for K Vintners Syrah, but his empire has expanded to include six brands and wines that cover every noble grape variety. The two tasting rooms at House of Smith Jet City in Seattle’s Georgetown neighborhood offer uniquely different vibes (the main floor has a rustic, open feel while the upstairs room gives a nod to the heyday of Seattle’s aviation culture) and some of Washington’s most awarded wines.
F | Cave B
From humble Brooklyn beginnings to the creation of the Gorge Amphitheater and the founding of their first vineyard, a desire to work the land and share the fruits of that labor with others have driven Vince and Carol Bryan. Though they sold the Gorge Amphitheater years ago, the Bryans have remained devoted to creating delicious wines while acting as stewards of their land. Cave B Estate Winery and their multi-award-winning wines are the culmination of this devotion. Whether you make the trek to Central Washington to visit the vineyards or opt to sample them in Cave B’s Woodinville tasting room, you are sure to find a red or a white to perfectly accompany your summer evenings.
ME AT THE
Port of Grays Harbor Observation Tower
Unsure where to spend your day in Westport? The Port of Grays Harbor Observation Tower on the north end of Westhaven Drive offers views of the area’s many outdoor activities as well as the harbor and, on a clear day, the Olympic Mountains.
Fisherman’s Boardwalk
Grays Harbor still offers a bounty of fish, and a short walk down Fisherman’s Boardwalk with your fishing gear will put you in a great spot for Coho salmon, Dungeness crab, and rockfish. If you’re feeling more adventurous, charter boats will take you farther out to sea for halibut and albacore tuna.
Grays Harbor Lighthouse
Built in 1898, Grays Harbor Lighthouse ascends 135 steps and 107 feet into the sky for 360-degree views of Grays Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. Take one of the tours hosted by the Westport South Beach Historical Society to learn the history of the tallest lighthouse in Washington.
Westport Maritime Museum
Formerly the Coast Guard Station, the Maritime Museum showcases the history of the South Beach and its maritime presence. Inside its five historic buildings, you’ll find reconstructed skeletons of whales and other marine mammals, Coast Guard equipment, and a working Fresnel lighthouse lens that was constructed in France in 1890.
Cranberry Coast
Just a few minutes south of Westport, the Cranberry Coast Scenic Byway wends through breathtaking scenery, bikeable roads, gift shops and farm stores, and more than 1,000 acres of cranberry farms. Wildlife enthusiasts will want to make a trip to the Smith Creek State Wildlife Recreation Area for bird watching and kayaking.
Tokeland Hotel
While you’re enjoying the area, be sure to check out the oldest hotel in the state! The Tokeland Hotel is a charming retreat that includes the famed Wandering Goose restaurant, with its southern-based sustainable seafood focus and unique offerings from chef Heather Earnhardt.
International Mermaid Museum
Located at the Westport Winery Garden Resort, the International Mermaid Museum is an immersive experience for merfolk of all ages. The museum uses mermaid ecology from across cultures to teach visitors about ocean ecology “from seashore to the sea floor.”
Surfing
Considered one of the best surfing spots from British Columbia to Oregon, Westport offers waves for every skill level. With three main breaks and several shops in town that provide lessons and rental gear, this is a great spot for beginners and pros alike. If surf spectating is more your speed, the jetty offers a great vantage point.
Westport Light Trail
Known to locals as “The Dunes Trail,” this ADA-accessible trail is a delightful two-mile round trip through dunes and tall grasses with plentiful views, art, and benches to rest along the way. You may see surfers riding the waves near the jetty, as well as the majestic lighthouse standing amongst the trees.
Whale & Sea Lion Watching
The waters near Westport teem with marine mammals, including whales, dolphins, and several kinds of seals and sea lions. In some seasons, whales can be spotted from the beach. California sea lions often use the docks in the Westport Marina to rest while harbor seals are a common site on the beaches around town.

HISTORICAL COASTAL COMMUNITIES
Located in close proximity to both Seattle and Everett, Snohomish County’s oldest incorporated town, Edmonds, is rich in history and recreational opportunities. Edmonds is home to a prosperous arts and culture community, and offers easily accessible beaches, waterfront parks, and a walkable downtown district. Mukilteo is the Gateway to the Salish Sea and Whidbey Island. The New Ferry Terminal is the first to be built in 40 years in Washington State, and inspired by the tribal longhouses built by the Coast Salish Tribes who occupied the land the terminal is built upon.
