HEMMA

HEMMA COLLECTIO N It is springtime and the time of year to share Hemma, my seventh fabric collection with you, created together with Windham Fabrics. It is also that time of the year when I start feeling wanderlust and start planning trips. I often travel to warmer spots, so I can defrost from the Brooklyn winters and get some sunny rays in my life. But I also go to places where I can visit friends, old and new. Los Angeles is an interesting city right now, a lot of exciting restaurants and food, palm trees, stunning beaches, hiking, and of course Disneyland is there. My nine year old son loves riding the Indiana Jones ride and I must admit that it was one of the most fun rides I have ever been on myself. I also was invited to teach my printing workshop at a lovely roof terrace at The Line Hotel in Koreatown by my old friends Angie and

Ted, the husband and wife team behind the amazing design gift shop store, Poketo. If stars align I will go back and teach there again come Spring 2017. I finally went to Amsterdam again in almost over 17 years, since my last trip there, and wow... it is SUCH a charming, sophisticated, friendly and wonderful city. I loved every moment I was there and wish I had more than three days to visit. I got to see The Nightwatch by Rembrandt, which is an experience I recommend to everyone-it is absolutely incredible! And yes, it probably goes without saying-travel inspires me immensely. I love to travel and I always take all those impressions, thoughts, feelings, flavors, experiences and exchanges back to my designs and home...Hemma, as we say in Swedish.

AMSTERDAM

In the next few pages I want to share with you some of my latest inspiration and musings; things and projects that tickle me at the moment, like quilt designs that I enjoy, and fun things and details one can add to dresses and tunics. In November of last year I published the sewing book, Lotta Jansdotter Everyday Style. The book is filled with simple, pretty and practical apparel sewing patterns for everyday life. You can find all the garment

patterns throughout this Hemma catalog in my book. You can learn more about my book on page 22. I also teamed up with the talented Insung Kim of Namoo Quilts. I admire her spontaneous, modern, and artistic quilts and was delighted when she agreed to collaborate with me on two quilt designs-Hilma and Femke. I packed these two really heavy, but gorgeous quilts with me to Amsterdam.

2

H I LM A Q U I LT Hilma was inspired from a longtime favorite painter I was fascinated with growing up in Sweden, Hilma af Klint. She was Swedish as well and her work was both mysterious and mystical. Hilma was also among the first abstract artists. She was born in 1862 and created art all the way until her death in 1944. Insung Kim (Namoo Quilts) and I designed a quilt with wonky and mismatched circles and pie shapes. we captured the feeling of spontaneity and improvisation, with a lot of empty white space. Hilma is a happy, cheerful, modern and stylish quilt that celebrates the imperfectly perfect. Insung did such an incredible job interpreting my thoughts, whims and ideas into a gorgeous quilt.

The Femke quilt is another modern, simple and bold quilt - just the way I like them! I love the sharp icicle and triangle shapes that stack on each other to create a lovely abstract layout. Once again, Insung Kim has done a marvelous job with this quilt..THANK YOU! We will share the sewing pattern for this quilt in Spring 2016, so sign up to join our mailing lists and follow us on Instagram to keep up to date. In Amsterdam I got to meet the really lovely Judith and her very creative mum Ingrid, of Ing-things. We had a nice morning together eating apple cake and drinking tea. Judith modeled my Esme Tunic for me and the photographer Jenny Hallengren, my childhood friend, also joined me in Amsterdam for cake and photo shoots. The Esme Tunic is the most simple, flattering and versatile garment that you can make in a few quick hours. Here it is, made in a 7 oz. weight cotton canvas with an appliqué. I think adding appliqué, pockets and other details to your garment is a fun and creative touch.

SEWING CONTEST

We all love patchwork, right? Well, I hope you will join me on a really fun project: sewing a patchwork Esme Tunic using many or a few of the fabrics in my Hemma collection. I would love to see your version of this Esme Tunic using all those left over bits and bobs of Hemma you will have. The one that Judith is showing us here is a rather orderly version, very evenly composed and neat. But how about sewing a really improvised and uneven patchwork tunic? What will that look like? Or maybe you can take some inspiration from Gloria Vanderbilt’s quilted garments - she loved everything patchwork, from ceilings and floors to ball gowns. Look her up! This summer we will have an online contest where you can share your version of the patchwork Esme Tunic. We have many lovely prizes and giveaways if you participate. Check in online to learn more about the contest at www.jansdotter.com 8

I am very excited about quilted garments! They are starting to pop up everywhere now in the fashion world - quilted sneakers, t-shirts, jackets. I also wanted to try that of course, so I decided to try it with my Pilvi coat (from my sewing book Lotta Jansdotter’s Everyday Style). I asked Alison O’Grady of Sew Bee It Clothier to help me sew this using the patterns in my book, and she did an immaculate job! Alison is a true professional that takes great pride in her work and it shows. I love this set, Alison - it fits me perfectly! We used my black and white fabric Lilla Emmi for this look and it works so well! It feels stylish and professional, yet creative and fun. I am so thrilled to have a new outfit for spring, for my outings to museums and for my business meetings as well.

MY A M STERDAM F AVORI TES We stayed at the Lloyd Hotel, it has incredibly interesting, unique rooms and a history to match as well. A few minutes outside of downtown and very easy to go to with the tram. www.lloydhotel.com Apple pie is something you are probably going to have to try at some point while you are in Amsterdam, so you might as well eat at one of the best places, Winkel 43! A charming place to visit any day and snacks you won’t regret. Right next to Winkel 43 is The Noordenmarkt where you can get yourself some nice flea market finds. www.winkel43.nl There are many inspiring little independent design shops all over the Jordaan district, however one shop that stood out was Sukha Amsterdam. It felt like walking into a special world and mood, a shop that is nicely curated and has its own unique style, which is so rare these days. It is a must visit for people who like natural garments and housewares in a casual quality, modern and slightly Bohemian style. www.atelier-sukha.nl Restaurant Blauw serves really generous portions of Indonesian food in a modern setting. I don’t think I ever have eaten Indonesian food before and was so happy I did; lots of new and exotic flavors. It was also worth the 20 min. tram ride to get there. A real delicious treat for dinner. I do recommend making a reservation first. www.restaurantblauw.nl We had another culinary experience that I want to share with you at the restaurant Hemelse Modder, we ate a deliciously curated five course meal paired with wine and absolutely loved it. Smaller portions with big flavor. www.hemelsemodder.nl The Rijk Museum is one of the best museums I have ever visited. My only regret is that I did not have all day to stay there. I could have disappeared for hours in the paintings and dark walls. The mood is moody, gorgeous and very impressive. You have to go and experience the painters of the Dutch Golden Age. Put it on your bucket list if it is not already there. Lunch at the museum was also delightful. www.rijksmuseum.nl Of course you are going to eat a lot of amazing gouda while you are in Amsterdam but the perfect souvenirs to bring home are the local chocolates at Tony’s Chocolonely. Fun packaging and yummy content in unique flavors. www.tonyschocolonely.com 10

THE A S TR I D BAG

Astrid is one of those handy bags that are good for outings and travels. It perfectly fits your keys, wallet, phone and sunglasses. Pick a fabric that fits your outfits or personality and find the sewing pattern in my book (to learn more about my book "Lotta Jansdotter Everyday Style" see page 22).

HE R E W E G O L . A .

So many places, so little time. Here were some of my favorite spots in Los Angeles: The Line Hotel in Koreatown, is very interesting and it is located in a pedestrian friendly neighborhood, so fun to explore. Make sure to get a view of the hills...marvelous to wake up to in the mornings. www.thelinehotel.com Even if you don’t stay at the hotel, make sure to visit the restaurant Commissary-the salsa verde with the breakfast burritos is simply unbelievable! A few steps away from the hotel we visited The Prince and tasted our first Korean beer and some spicy fried chicken. This place is a wonderful divey place with old lounge decor. Loved it! www.theprincela.com My family and I took a nice hike to the very top of Griffith Park. It turned out to be a fun adventure since we decided to take the tricky off-road trails (happens with 9-year olds). A must do.

Poketo is a very nicely curated design shop full of wonderful home and fashion accessories, including great gifts. www.poketo.com SQIRL - I need this casual restaurant to be right next to my home! One of my favorite eats...ever! www.sqirlla.com The Fabric Store, LA is a very lovely find, thanks to my friend Felicity. It has a super collection of fashion fabrics, patterns and New Zealand wools. Also has a lovely staff and good online projects. thefabricstoreusa.com RTH is a super great retail store and shopping experience: I loved to get lost in this world, it has a certain ultra chic cowboy meets hippie outpost vibe and definitely has its own unique voice. www.rthshop.com Guisados has truly the best tacos. We went there many times. www.guisados.co

THE KIOMI DRESS Big, generous, swooshy dresses to be active and be happy wearing them. My Kiomi dress can be long for lazy days on the beach, real short and layered with pants, or sewn as a top. You decide the length to your lifestyle (and travel destinations!). The sewing pattern is available in my book (see page 22 for more information). I am happy to bring in some bright grass-green color to this collection and a cheerful orange that pops, rather perfect for sunny summer days.

STEPBY-STEP PROJECT

H EAD BANDS

I really love simple head bands that can be cranked out in no time using some Hemma fabric and wire for shaping. I like having different patterns for different outfits. We are going to share the how-to instructions online this summer, so make sure to join Windham Fabrics and Lotta Jansdotter on our mailing lists and Instagram for updates and information. 14

BROKEN BARS QUILT

Yes, more quilt inspiration! - We love quilts and here I used some of my colleagues quilt designs with Hemma. I like this very simple, modern Aztec-style quilt by Rebecca Roach, in deep indigo blue and orange. Using two simple and sweet textile designs - the small cross hatch Pojk compliments the small floral Lilla Emmi very nicely. I think this one will go in my summer cabin back home on Ă…land islands in Scandinavia. Thank you, Rebecca! pattern available for sale at www.rebecca-roach.com

OASIS QU ILT

Oasis was created by Sherri McConnell of A Quilting Life. I love combining the yellow and celadon colors together with a hint of dark gray for contrast. A sweet, yet very elegant quilt. Very happy with this one. pattern available for sale at www.aquiltinglife.com

In Los Angeles I asked a dear friend of mine, Meiko Takechi Arquillos to take photos in her hometown for this catalog. She invited Tai to model my garments and outfits... I think Tai is sort of meant to live in this Esme Tunic with cats, it is so cute on her. Cat prints are cute and fun on everything and all the time... well, almost! I could not resist making another cat print, since I am a die hard cat lover myself. This pattern is called Mirre and it comes in black/white, and orange/white. 17

This season we are offering you 108" wide back fabric. We picked one of our most popular patterns, PAV, in two colorways-indigo blue and gray. They compliment most of my previous seven collections with Windham Fabrics.

I am mad about pockets. I love them, especially on dresses. In this catalog I played around a bit with pockets, as you can see. The whole Hemma collection is represented in pockets on an Esme Tunic made out of 10 oz. weight canvas. Maybe it is not the most practical dress (or is it?), but you have to agree that it is sort of cute. Local seamstress here in Brooklyn, Pia Cooperman helped me by sewing this dress - it is my ode to Marimekko’s Iloinen Takki dress I used to wear as a two year-old girl back home in Scandilands. My mom had the same one in a grown up version, and that dress is solidly etched in my memory. I still have that little girl dress, it now sits in a frame for the wall. Obviously, you don’t need to add 19 pockets to your garments…but how about a few just for fun? On a shirt, on your pants, or even on a hat? 20

W O R K S H O PS & CO LLA B O R A T I O N S I love to create fabric together with Windham Fabrics, but I also love to do a lot of other things. I teach workshops all over the world and am thrilled that I can combine my love for travel with my love for printing on fabric and paper. I have taught my print making techniques and held various workshops in many different places. Such as my studio in Brooklyn, a lovely rooftop terrace in Los Angeles, a big remote shed outside the countryside in Gujarat India, and an old factory garage with no walls in Merida, Mexico. This summer I am going to teach in a castle in France and back home in a big barn on a private island in the Ă…land archipelago in Scandinavia. Next year plans include San Francisco, Africa and Tokyo. I invite you to join me on these adventures and inspiring journeys. They are memories for life, I promise. Visit www.jansdotter.com/workshops to learn more about my future trips and workshops.

Lotta Jansdotter Everyday Style is a sewing book filled with basic wardrobe pieces. Garments feature clean lines which are easy to move in, are cute (but not too cute) and rather timeless. These pieces are perfect for everyday life, no matter your age or size. I invited the talented Alexia Abegg of Green Bee Patterns to interpret my ideas into sewing patterns that are functional, versatile and easy to sew and alter. She did an impeccable job. I am so incredibly happy and proud of this book, and together with my

stellar editor Melanie Falick, and my great team at Abrams, I believe we created a really wonderful and useful book for new and more seasoned sewers. All the garments you see in this Hemma catalog are from this book. You can order your copies of Lotta Jansdotter Everyday Style at: www.abramsbooks.com 22
