MARCH 2019.

Claudia HENRIQUEZ-JOHNSON was born in Osorno, Chile in 1966. She moved to Valparaiso in 1985 and in 1987 began her studies in art. As a painter, her work was exhibited in Chile and received numerous prestigious awards. For the last twenty five years, she has focused on the medium of photography, capturing stunning land and seascape images that are often the inspiration behind her husband, renowned Chilean minimalist, Jose Basso’s serenely evocative landscape paintings. We are honored to be bringing Claudia’s captivating work to the United States for the first time.

Jose BASSO was born in Chile in 1949 and later graduated with a Fine Arts degree from the University of Chile. He became a professor of art at the same institution, while continuing to develop his skill as an artist. His work has been shown in numerous international exhibitions and is included in the collections of prominent collectors and public institutions alike, among them, ex Chilean President, Ricardo Lagos, the National Museum of Fine Arts in Santiago, Chile, Jean Kennedy Smith and Queen Sofia of Spain. In 2007, Jose was commissioned to paint an important mural for the Office of Export Administration in Washington, D.C. and in 2011 he was honored with a retrospective of his work at Chile’s National Museum of Fine Arts in Santiago. With his elegantly simplified forms and fine brushwork, complimented by his signature use of color and masterful ability to capture light, Basso’s evocative, serenely beautiful creations, the perfect blend of realism and abstraction, are universal in their appeal. It is no coincidence that he has consistently remained our top selling artist over the fifteen years that we have had the privilege of representing his extraordinary work.

“I feel the need to use art as a means to rescue and reflect only what is good. I want to make a kind of art that means something and it means something when it affects and seduces us, when it speaks from within its own silence.” jose basso..

Throughout history, artists’ passions and creativity have been inseparably linked to the muses that inspired them. The complex creative relationship between artists and their muses is one of the most fascinating aspects of art history. Rodin and Camille Claudel, Andy Warhol and Edie Sedgwick, Alfred Stieglitz and Georgia O’Keefe, Pablo Picasso and Marie-Therese Walter, Francoise Gilot, Dora Maar, and Jacqueline Roque. Man Ray by Kiki de Montparnasse, Salvador Dali by Gala Diakonova, Sandro Botticelli by Simonetta Vespucci. These are just a few. So, too, is the case of Chilean minimalist, Jose Basso and Claudia Henriquez- Johnson. In looking at Claudia’s stunning land and seascape photographs, the viewer immediately draws reference to the minimalist works of her husband, JOSE BASSO, and can easily see how these contemplative photographs translate into the serenely beautiful works of this immensely talented contemporary painter. How the two inspire each other is readily apparent. It was my great privilege to have personally curated a selection of Claudia’s captivating seascapes to serve as the inspiration behind our 2019 Jose Basso exhibition, Jose BASSO and Claudia HENRIQUEZ-JOHNSON. We look forward to a most inspired and beautiful exhibition.
