The Town of Windsor is a recipient of the 2023 American Public Works Association (APWA) Excellence in Snow and Ice Control Award that was accepted at the North American Snow Conference in Omaha, Nebraska, on April 17. The APWA Colorado Chapter presented the award to Town Board on Monday, May 8.

The APWA presents the Excellence in Snow and Ice Control Award annually to promote excellence in the management and administration of public works snow and ice operations while also minimizing environmental impacts. Windsor was one of only four recipients to receive this honor.

FLOATING ISLANDS PILOT PROGRAM Fighting Harmful Algae Blooms with Plants

The Town of Windsor is adopting a floating islands program that is intended to prevent green-blue algae blooms that occur due to pollutants entering local waterways via the Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4). The pilot program will take place at Eastman Park Pond starting late June and if successful, will be adopted into larger local bodies of water in the future.

The islands are created from recycled materials and injected with foam to stay afloat. Each island has 38 planting plug holes that hold native sedges, which are grass-like plants, and rushes, which are flowering plants with stem-like leaves. When placed, their roots will trail into the water below and suck up any excess nutrients that can cause harmful algae blooms.
