In Wine Country Ontario, the character of each region is as unique as the wines that are created there. And each glass captures moments you’ll never forget: The warmth of the sun under a perfect sky. Ontario’s Appellations

It’s all about place. Special places right here in Ontario. Places like nowhere else in the world. Where the soil, the slope, the sunshine, the warmth, the rainfall and the craftsmanship all matter. Together, they give us better grapes. And better grapes give us better wine.

Appellation Factoid Ontario identified three primary Viticultural Areas (VAs) or appellations of origin, furthermore within the Niagara Peninsula appellation, decades of grape growing experience and extensive geographic research has identified 10 distinct growing areas. These sub-appellations include areas on the plains close to Lake Ontario and the benchlands of the Niagara Escarpment.

Ontario winemakers are talking more and more about appellations – the places where they plant and tend their vines – as they bring to the New World a long tradition of identifying the unique blend of soil, topography, climate and culture that creates a growing environment. Our province has three primary appellations. Niagara Peninsula encompasses a diverse terroir of sheltered slopes and lakeside vineyards, with rich soils spread over a limestone base; the complexity shines through in the wines. Lake Erie North Shore benefits from plenty of sunshine and warm lake breezes, producing grapes with a balance of sweetness and acidity during a long growing season. And Prince Edward County, surrounded by the waters of Lake Ontario, has stony soils and microclimate conditions that yield excellent fruit and inspire winemaking finesse. All Ontario appellations embody the classic traits of cool-climate wines: aromatic, lighter-bodied and higher in acidity. What’s more, our vineyards are at the same latitude as Burgundy – but they’re also right on your doorstep.

Discovering Wine Country

Ontario’s wines are a perfect accompaniment to memorable experiences: Trying the chef’s pairings at an acclaimed restaurant. Chatting with a vintner over a plate of artisanal cheese. Celebrating a rare find at an antiques shop. Raising a glass to the happy couple – or a great round of golf. Any of the special moments that define a relaxing Wine Country getaway.

It’s easy to create your own travel experience around one of Ontario’s distinctive appellations. You and your companions can combine wine tastings with a tour of award-wining restaurants, comparing notes on your favourites. Or maybe you want to better understand the differences between varietals, along with the techniques that vintners use to highlight their unique traits. And then there are the many other diversions that Wine Country has to offer, from biking and hiking to visits with artists in their studios. Pausing regularly, of course, to enjoy lunch on a winery patio or drinks on a lakeside terrace – before gathering over dinner to toast another memorable day. Whether you’re just getting into wines or have been tasting seriously for years, the great thing about Wine Country is that you can actually have conversations 4 – 2014 TRAVEL GUIDE

with the people who created what’s in your glass. They’ll explain the unique properties of soil, water and sunlight in their vineyards, along with the decisions that go into a great bottle, from grape selection to whether tanks or barrels are preferable for aging. At some wineries they’ll even invite you to come out back and see the process firsthand. What you bring away from your Wine Country travels, in addition to some new vintages to share with friends and family, is a deeper appreciation for why Ontario wines are being celebrated around the world. Plus some great memories to savour until you can come back again.

Wines with Personality

It’s hard to put into words what makes our wines great. But the vintners who craft them and the experts around the world who praise them are willing to try. “Ontario alone can produce a vivid array of Chardonnays, some of which can hold their own with the world’s finest.” JANCIS ROBINSON (UK)

“Its white wines from decidedly cool zones can be thrilling, and Pinot Noir gets better from year to year. These are wines we all need to discover.” STEPHEN BROOK (UK)

“When I came to Canada for the first time [in July 2013]… I found wines that were world class, and a talented, well-travelled and engaging community of winegrowers who were doing great things. A revolution in wine quality has taken place in Ontario of late, and I was thrilled to be able to witness part of this.” JAMIE GOODE (UK)

“Enough producers, vineyards, vintages and winemaking experience to be on the verge of another order of success.” MATT KRAMER (US)

6 – 2014 TRAVEL GUIDE

Over the past decade, Ontario appellations have caught the world’s attention. Our vintners have won countless awards at international competitions, and their best vintages regularly earn kudos from respected publications. Moreover, as our industry has matured we’ve seen increasingly innovative approaches to winemaking from creative experimenters at established wineries, as well as up-andcoming producers who are just starting to build their reputations. From the art of growing and blending grapes to the science of proper aging, our winemakers constantly explore new directions as part of a broader effort to keep pace with changing tastes. Indeed, many Ontario wineries rely on direct feedback from visitors as they test new techniques and refine their distinctive styles.

There are also banquet facilities for your dream wedding, including outdoor ceremonies.

Viticulturalist and winemaker Deborah Paskus was among the first to plant in the County’s tough limestone soils, founding Closson Chase in 2000. Hybrid grape varieties like Baco Noir, Maréchal Foch and Seyval Blanc flourish in the four-hectare vineyard; they are augmented by vinifera grapes purchased in Niagara, creating a full range of whites and reds crafted by Mario Testa and Jorge Almeida. Appellation Factoid Situated between Niagara Peninsula and Lake Erie North Shore, Norfolk County sits within a warm pocket that is ideal for grape-growing. Locally dubbed the South Coast due to its long sunshine hours and warmer temperatures, this area is now supporting several vineyards and wineries. Further north, the Georgian Bay area boasts its own unique grape-growing microclimate and topography thanks to the limestone escarpment which traps moderating lake effects blowing in from Georgian Bay. Vineyards are also found in the area north of Toronto on the Oak Ridges Moraine which is Ontario’s most significant landform stretching 160 kms from Niagara Escarpment to the Trent River.

It is no secret that an obsession with making great wine takes several parts raw passion and a fair dose of lunacy. Here at Creekside, we’re no exception - in fact, some think we’re a little more bent than most. Yet our vision has never wavered and the recognition we’ve earned over the years is a testament to the importance of sticking to your grapes. Cheers!

Crown Bench, named for its elevated position overlooking Beamsville, boasts some of the region’s oldest vines – many planted in the late 1960s. Here, Peter Kocsis and Livia Sipos make Chardonnay, Bordeaux-variety reds and dessert wines from low-yielding vineyards. Innovative offerings include a chocolateinfused dessert wine called Ambrosia and Eros, a late-picked Vidal aged five years in barrel.

Daniel Lenko, a third-generation grape grower, established his winery on the Beamsville Bench in 1999. In 1959 Daniel’s grandfather John and father William planted some of the first Chardonnay vines in Canada. The vineyard thrived in this unique microclimate and is now the oldest Chardonnay planting in Canada. Quick Taste Insider Tips Tips for Wine Tasting Tasting in Wine Country can be a rewarding experience that helps consumers make important decisions on their favourite wines to buy. Here are some tips to get the most out of your visit to a winery. 1. Taste responsibly. Always have a designated driver who is not consuming alcohol. Taste small samples and feel free to use the spittoons that are provided. 2. Give your senses a chance. Refrain from chewing gum or eating strong tasting foods before you taste and avoid wearing perfume.

3. Look, Swirl, Smell and Taste. Start by noticing the colour of the wine as it will give you a hint of its age and style. Next, swirl the wine in its glass to release the aromas. Now taste the wine slowly while noting the flavours. 4. Pace Yourself. 5. Plan to visit 4 or 5 wineries at most per day.

To help you plan your Wine Country adventure, we’ve crafted itineraries focusing on specific varietals, local history and other themes. Here are three to get you started – and you’ll find more at winecountryontario.ca. Stunning Architecture A trip to Niagara Wine Country is an adventure in architectural exploration – from kitschy renovated barns to stunning masterpieces that simply take your breath away. Woodruff House at Ravine Vineyards. Delicious in the County Food and wine is intertwined in Prince Edward County as chefs and winemakers combine their talents in a tantalizing array of choices for visitors. You don’t want to miss the wood-fired pizza at Norman Hardie or the cosy Cucina Italiana, overlooking the vineyards and gardens at Casa-Dea, enjoy a picnic lunch at The Grange or enjoy the view from the Gazebo Restaurant nestled in Waupoos’ vineyards. As for treats to carry home, pick up some gourmet specialties at Rosehall Run. Natural Getaway In Lake Erie North Shore you can explore the biologically diverse natural settings and inspire your inner locavore. Experience the region’s bounty firsthand with Oxley Estate’s Wine Garden menu; whet your appetite for more with wine and a walk around Cooper’s Hawk Vineyards’ natural ponds and wetland. If time allows, take the ferry across to Pelee Island Winery’s Pavilion to finish your day with a wine tasting and garden barbecue.

THE CONNECTION BETWEEN WINE AND EARTH RUNS DEEP. Ontario’s temperate climate, diversity of glacial soils and the moderating effect of the Great Lakes come together to influence the vines that yield the grapes. It remains the vintner’s art to express terroir, and produce wines invariably linked to the land. We invite you to taste the place.

Foreign Affair Winery (The)

Since opening in 2005, Ed Madronich has injected fun and enthusiasm into both the wine and the winery experience. The five-level gravity-fed winery sits atop the escarpment with an incredible 360° view of vineyards and Lake Ontario. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, made by Jay Johnston, are the winery’s focus but the Rieslings are consistently recognized among Canada’s best.

Former Ontario trade diplomat to Italy Len Crispino was inspired by Amarone wines. In 2000, he and wife Marisa purchased prime land in Vineland and applied the old-world appassimento technique to a new-world setting. This pioneering work was recognized in the prestigious Premier’s Award for Agri-Food Innovation. The welcoming boutique winery provides lasting, memorable wine experiences.

Harvest Estate Wines

Five generations of the Mowat family have farmed in Niagara; the last two are responsible for Harbour Estates, which has been growing grapes and making wine since 1999. The vineyard is situated on the waterfront of Jordan Harbour. Ken Mowat makes a wide range of affordable wines, with notable success for Riesling, Pinot Gris, a white blend called Sunrise and a red blend called Midnight.

Opened in 2001, Harvest Estates draws from the large vineyard holdings of Hernder Estate in the nearby Short Hills Bench sub-appellation. It is housed inside the Harvest Barn Fruit Market, one of the area’s finest produce, bakery and deli markets. Visitors can sample and purchase award-winning VQA and fruit wines made by Lydia Tomek and browse an array of giftware.

Hiking and Biking The Bruce Trail, one of Canada’s most celebrated walking and hiking routes, begins near Niagara Falls and winds northward to Tobermory – and one of its most beautiful stretches runs through Wine Country. You can choose where to pick it up and enjoy a short jaunt down this incredible piece of geological history, a longer walk (maybe with a picnic) or a day’s hike to really earn that multi-course dinner. See brucetrail.org for all the details. If you prefer two-wheeled exploring, there are many winery biking tours (most will deliver any bottles you’ve purchased back to your car – or right to your home). Niagaraon-the-Lake is also the intersection of the Lake Ontario Waterfront Trail (70 km) and the Niagara River Recreation Trail (56 km). Enjoy great riding on paths and smaller roads as you discover the Niagara Gorge and the entire Greenbelt region at your own pace. You’ll find all the details at niagaragreenbelt.com – and check out biketrain.ca for info on the Bike Train from Toronto.

Thirty Bench Wine Makers

Moray Tawse’s inspiration for a six-tier gravity-flow winery came from his love of Burgundian Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. His family owned winery lies on the Niagara Escarpment with three barrel cellars carved into the Escarpment. Using organic and biodynamic farming practices, he’s expanded his range to terroir-driven Riesling, Cabernet Franc and Merlot crafted by Paul Pender and Rene Van Ede.

Thirty Bench is located in the Beamsville Bench appellation, a narrow strip of land near Lake Ontario that boasts sloping vineyards and deep, dry soil. Thirty Bench believes that less is more and winemaker Emma Garner manages the vineyards for low yields to ensure greater quality and intensity. The estate’s award-winning Rieslings are coveted by collectors and wine lovers. We invite you to enjoy our wines at one-on-one tastings of our rare Small Lot wines.

In 2008, Southbrook moved from a rural setting north of Toronto to its own vineyard and Jack Diamond-designed architectural showpiece in Niagara. Owners Bill and Marilyn Redelmeier have always strived for complex, age-worthy Chardonnays and Cabernet-Merlot blends. Under the direction of Ann Sperling, Southbrook is Canada’s first Demeter-certified biodynamic winery, supplementing its organic certification.

One of the most dramatic and innovative wineries in Niagara, and the first to be LEED certified, Stratus is known for its benchmark blends, Stratus Red and Stratus White. Winemaker J-L Groux also makes a unique range of single-varietal, small-lot wines and Icewines from the sustainably farmed vineyard. Local Foods and Local Wines Grapes grown in cooler regions such as Ontario ripen and accumulate their flavours slowly. The wines tend to be complex, flavourful and balanced, with higher acidity and more mineral flavours, making them the most food-friendly wines in the world. So it’s no surprise that the wine regions in Ontario have attracted top chefs, culinary artisans and a thriving “go local” environment that’s perfect to enjoy the authentic bounty that Ontario grown food and wine provides.

Thank you Wine Country Ontario is dedicated to promoting Ontario’s wine-growing regions – from the wines and wineries themselves to the complete experience of each destination: local cuisine, year-round activities and warm hospitality. Wine Country Ontario is a trademark of the Wine Council of Ontario, a non-profit trade association that promotes Ontario’s vintners and the unique qualities of our authentic, 100% VQA wines. Wine Country Ontario’s programs have been developed with the ongoing support and advice of our active partners in the industry – the Ministry of Economic Development, Trade and Employment and through the leadership of our Industry Marketing Committee and its members from the Wine Council of Ontario, the Grape Growers of Ontario, the Vintners Quality Alliance of Ontario and the input of other engaged stakeholders. We are also grateful for the ongoing advice and support of the LCBO in championing the success of VQA wines to its staff and to the consumer. This Guide has been compiled for the benefit of travellers to Ontario’s Wine Country destinations. We hope that the listed services will enhance your Wine Country experience.
