Letter from the Editor A year ago my husband proposed to me on a calm, serene beach in the Cayman Islands. It was a moment I will never forget, when my heart nearly exploded with love for him and I was literally speechless as I threw my arms around his neck. A man standing about 20 feet away asked, “What did she say?” My husband turned to me and said, “I don’t know, what did you say?” I realized I had only nodded, so I whispered yes and my husband relayed the answer. Over the next four months we made hundreds of decisions from a wedding date and venue to the cake topper. We both wanted an outdoor wedding but had no idea where to begin our search. On a whim, we visited a vineyard and fell in love with the idea of a winery wedding. Checking out local wineries and choosing the right one for our wedding was a blast. In August of 2011 we had the wedding of our dreams. I hope this magazine offers inspiring ideas as you prepare for the wedding of your dreams. The first issue of Winery Weddings in Virginia features tips on choosing a winery for your wedding, the best dress for your figure, impressionable invitations, creative guest books, winery favors and much more. Enjoy reading ,and check us out online at www.winerywedding magazine.com.

Choosing a Winery for your Wedding
What better way to choose your wedding venue than sipping on a glass of wine at Virginia’s most beautiful wineries? Keep these questions in mind when visiting potential wineries for your wedding.
7. Will an event coordinator or facility director be available to help with our wedding? Many wineries staff an event coordinator or facility director to work with you and your fiance as you plan your wedding day.
1. How many guests can the winery accommodate? Some wineries limit the guest count to 50 while others allow up to 500 guests with the use of outdoor tents.
8. Will other weddings be booked on our wedding day? Many wineries only schedule one wedding per day. This is helpful to know when planning your wedding day timeline.
2. What options are available in the case of inclement weather on our wedding day? A large tasting room or banquet hall provides the perfect indoor location for a ceremony and/or reception.
9. Can we bring our own alcohol? Wineries require the purchase of their wines, but may allow beer and liquor on the premises. Typically, the bride and groom must obtain a one day banquet license and secure a bartender to distribute the beer and liquor.
3 What is the rental fee for an event? Winery rentals typically range from $1,500 to $8,000 per event. 4. Is gratuity included in the rental fee? On average, gratuity is 18-20% of the total rental cost and is usually not included in the rental fee. 5. Can both the ceremony and reception be held at the winery? Yes! Many tasting rooms are large enough to accommodate indoor receptions. Some wineries encourage outdoor tented receptions while others offer banquet halls specifically built for wedding celebrations. 6. Can we schedule our wedding any time of the day? Morning, afternoon and evening availability varies from winery to winery.
10. Can we hire a dj or live band to play music during the reception? This depends on the local noise ordinance and the winery’s policies. 11. Who is responsible for clean up? The last thing you’ll want to do on your wedding night is clean up after the party. If the winery does not offer clean up services, consider appointing a clean up team for this purpose. 12. Does the winery allow outside catering? Most wineries allow outside catering and provide a list of preferred caterers. 13. Are tables and chairs included in the rental cost? Tables and chairs are not always included in the rental of a winery facility and must be rented elsewhere. If this is the case, don’t forget to include table and chair rental fees in your budget. www.wineryweddingmagazine.com

Top 10 Wedding Planning Tips 1. Hire a wedding planner! A wedding planner can help make those last few weeks before your special day stress free and enjoyable. Having someone else follow up with vendors and tie up loose ends the month or day of your wedding will be a huge lifesaver and a great investment! 2. Start planning as early as possible. Start early to guarantee you get exactly what you want! Don’t miss out on the venue of your dreams because you waited too long. 3. Know your vendors. You want the absolute best on your wedding day so demand the absolute best from your vendors! Do your research and only select service providers with flawless records and references. 4. Ask for everything in writing. Anything that you discuss with vendors, including special requests or discounts, should be written in a contract. 5. Be as organized as possible. Stay organized to avoid feeling overwhelmed by the number of tasks ahead of you. Secure a wedding planner or download a wedding planning application for your phone. You’ll be so glad you did! 6. Watch your budget. It’s very easy to spend more money on your wedding than you can afford. Start out with a budget, stick to it and find options that allow you to do just that. You do not want to start your new life paying off wedding bills!
10
Winery Weddings in Virginia, Spring 2012
7. Choose your bridal party carefully. Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life. Only involve friends and family who genuinely share in your happiness and love, not those you feel obligated to include. 8. Confirm and follow up. About two months before the wedding date follow up with your vendors, provide any last minute instruction, and confirm the timing of all activities. 9. Don’t lose your perspective. Avoid geting so caught up in the small details that you don’t spend enough time on what’s really important to you. 10. Relax and enjoy! Your wedding day is a fun, happy, beautiful time. Enjoy it! You have done all you can and it is in the hands of the trustworthy vendors you have hired. ~ Contributed by Jennifer Smith, owner of Elegantly Chic Events~ www.elegantlychicevents.com

Makeup 101 When it comes to makeup there are four basic looks; Natural, Evening, Glamorous and Romantic. Once you choose the look that best portrays your individual style you can then make modifications to own that look. The Natural Look, also referred to as the classic beauty look, accentuates your best features with colors that enhance your natural beauty. The color of foundation you choose should be as close to your natural skin tone as possible and applied evenly on your face. Select earth tones such as bronze, gold and mauve eye shadows. Use a chocolate brown or soft charcoal eye liner to subtly frame your eyes. Choose soft pinks and peaches for your blush color or bronzer, and a soft pink or neutral color for your lips.
The Romantic Look, or Cinderella look, showcases flawless skin and exquisite eyes. Emphasize the skin by choosing a light foundation; if the right color is hard to find, mix two foundations to create your perfect shade. Sleek eyebrows are a staple for this look. Shape your brows to frame the eyes and use wax to fill in a little color if needed. Choose a fabulous mascara and a bright eye shadow in shades of light pinks and soft whites. A liquid under eye brightener illuminates the eyes. 32
Winery Weddings in Virginia, Spring 2012
The Glamorous Look, with its signature red lip, is a show stopper on the runway and an icon in classic films. Marilyn Monroe’s makeup is a notorious example of this look. When choosing a crimson mouth, find the right shade of lipstick that compliments your skin tone. Keep the lipstick on hand so you can touch it up throughout the evening, as it does fade over time. Enhance the look by applying liquid winged eyeliner along with dark mascara or false eyelashes.
The Evening Look, also known as the dramatic look, features smokey eyes and high cheekbones. Choose dark charcoals, blacks, deep purples and other bold color eye shadows for the smokey eye look, and line the lid with a dark or liquid liner. Legnthen lashes using mascara or false eyelashes for a dramatic flair. Use bronzer to contour your cheekbones as it will define your face and add a splash of glamour. Select a high intensity lip gloss to apply on top of lipstick for full and pouty lips.

On a Budget certain amount of money towards the wedding, and it’s important to have a financial conversation with them before deciding how much money you and your fiancé plan on saving for the big day. eSet priorities Once you have identified a total budget amount it’s time to set your priorities. What’s most important to you and your fiancé? The dress, the venue, the rings, the food? Your priorities will be a starting point when creating your budget. eCreate a budget spreadsheet The average U.S. wedding costs $26,542. This may seem extravagant for a one day event, but it can be surprising how quickly the numbers add up. Hidden expenses such as tax and gratuity increase the challenge of creating a realistic wedding budget. Follow these tips to start and stay on budget.
In a spreadsheet, document estimated expenses for all wedding categories from highest to lowest priority. Incorporate tax and gratuity expenses as well. Add up the cost of each category and increase the bottom line by 10% to cover unexpected costs. Include estimated expenses for the rehearsal dinner and honeymoon if you are financially responsible for these costs.
eDetermine how much money you have to work with
eTrack expenses
Years ago, the bride’s parents were expected to pay for the wedding and the groom’s parents paid for the rehearsal dinner. Today, couples tend to marry when they are older, placing them in a better position to pay for their own weddings. This, in turn, decreases the expectation that family members are responsible for all expenses. However, many parents will contribute a

Rain or Shine: Planning an Outdoor Wedding As casual, non-traditional weddings gain popularity over the years, more couples are opting for an outdoor wedding. The originality, spontaneity and tranquility of the great outdoors are just a few perks of an outside venue. Natural flowers and greenery make decorating a breeze, and picturesque views leave a lasting impression on all who attend. Hartwood Photography
While there are many benefits to an outdoor wedding there are a few drawbacks as well, Mother Nature being one of them. Keep these tips in mind when planning an outdoor wedding. eCreate a back up plan in the case of rain; an inside location for the ceremony such as the winery’s tasting room or an outdoor tent
eAppoint a “weather call” guy or gal and determine when the decision for an outdoor or indoor ceremony will occur eBe flexible if the ceremony location changes due to weather eEnsure suntan lotion, hand fans, bug spray and water are available in the case of hot, humid weather
eConsider a tent with sidewalls for more protection from heavy rain

How they met: Nick and Chelsea met through a mutual friend. Early on in the relationship, Nick realized he was competing with Ben and Jerry (the ice cream, not the men!) but quickly learned how to use them to his advantage.
Chelsea Causey and Nicholas Sparaco September 24, 2011 Potomac Point Winery
How he proposed: During a leisurely stroll down Nagshead beach, Nick proceeded to walk in front of Chelsea and knelt down before her with a pint of Ben and Jerry’s in hand. It wasn’t her usual Banana Split flavor; it was a pint of “Will You Marry Me.” With shaking hands, he opened the specially made Ben and Jerry’s carton, pulled out the ring box and popped the question. Chelsea said yes, even though she was slightly disappointed there was no ice cream inside. He pulled out all the stops to “scoop” her off her feet! Why a winery wedding: Since Chelsea’s family owns Potomac Point Winery it was a no brainer to host their reception there. The beautiful ballroom, stunning view of rolling vineyards and sheer love that went into building the winery and vineyard were more than enough reasons to consider Potomac Point Winery the best place to celebrate their wedding. Wedding moments to remember: Nick and Chelsea loved the personal details throughout the day. Nick used his manly skills to build the frame for an ice cream stand and created some of the signage they used. Chelsea’s grandmother and bridesmaid painted the signs for a fun, personal touch. Her bridesmaids made adorable drink stirrers for the sangria, and Nick and Chelsea’s father each wore a Potomac Point Winery cork mixed into their boutonnieres.

How they met: Larry and Lydia met in 2008 at a dinner party hosted by a mutual friend. Over a year later they were set up by the same friend and began dating. How he proposed: After eight months of dating, Larry proposed with a scavenger hunt, replete will small gifts along the way that represented the experiences they had shared together. She figured out the “prize” rather quickly. Why a winery wedding: Lydia’s academic background in classical studies, including Greco-Roman architecture, inspired the idea of a wedding in the vein of a Giorgione painting with an almost theatrical backdrop. Barboursville Winery was the perfect location, as their wine is Italian styled and the Charlottesville area is warm and alive during the late summer months. They wanted an elegant, sophisticated, established and grown-up wedding venue that provided excellent food. Barboursville was the obvious decision. Wedding moments to remember: Larry and Lydia will never forget the unplanned sound effects that accompanied their early evening ceremony. While sharing their vows they heard cows mooing in the nearby pasture, a plane flying overhead, a train chugging along in the distance and even shotgun blasts. The officiant assured guests it was not a shotgun wedding! Their favorite ceremony surprise occurred during the recitation of the Lord’s Prayer when bells from a nearby church began to chime. It was an unexpected delight and a magical moment.

May Ewald and Derek Durkovic August 5, 2011 Philip Carter Winery
How they met: May and Derek first noticed each other at Rock It Bar and Grill in Alexandria. Upon meeting the gaze from May’s blue eyes, Derek simply nodded and gave her a slight wink. About an hour later he watched her walk out the door and realized it was now or never. He quickly bolted after her and ran two blocks before catching up. Panting from his run, he pulled a business card from his pocket and handed it to May. Three days later they met again on their first date. How he proposed: While shell searching on a gorgeous beach in the Cayman Islands, Derek called May over to check out the shells he found. She reluctantly left her search to join him and was surprised to see three diamonds sparkling among the seashells in his hand. It wasn’t until he bent down on one knee that she realized he was proposing. Why a winery wedding: Derek and May fell in love with the open spaces, gorgeous views and intimate setting of Philip Carter Winery. Wedding moments to remember: Since the ceremony took place between two ponds, guests were invited to release a floating lantern in honor of the couple’s union. After the ceremony, Derek and May enjoyed a 30 minute sunset “photo shoot” and the chance to spend their first moments as a married couple in such a beautiful and intimate setting.

How they met: Greg and Lauren met at a local bar in the Fan of Richmond. When Lauren’s friend noticed Greg wearing a Steeler’s jersey she walked up to him and blurted out that Lauren was a Steelers fan, too. Greg and Lauren started talking and exchanged phone numbers before leaving the bar. That’s how it all started.
Lauren Graham and Greg Rudolph Winery Engagement Photo Shoot Veritas Winery
How he proposed: After an amazing day of sightseeing and wine tasting in Napa Valley, Greg found the perfect setting at beautiful Darioush Vineyards to ask “the question.” With joyful tears in her eyes Lauren said yes; she couldn’t have been more surprised. The trip was a huge success! Why a winery engagement photo shoot: Greg and Lauren enjoy wine, the education behind it and exploring new wineries. They visited Veritas Winery and fell in love with the indoor/outdoor space and whimsical ballroom. With their photographer’s great ideas and willingness to travel, they spent a day at the winery celebrating their engagement and posing for the camera. Wedding plans: The couple is planning an outdoor ceremony on May 19, 2012 at a country club in Glen Allen. The special celebration is all about friends and family joining them in a relaxed, vintage setting with great food, drinks and music.

Creative Guest Books This unique guest “book” is perfect for a winery wedding. Purchase four of your favorite bottles of wine and create personalized labels for each bottle. Include your names, wedding date, wedding location and an anniversary year. During the reception, ask guests to sign any bottle they choose. Keep the bottles in a safe place until the corresponding anniversaries, then celebrate with wine while reminiscing about your wedding day.
SugarVineArt
A popular alternative for a guest book is a family tree. Buy or draw a leafless tree on a large canvass or poster board. Below the tree, write your first names and include your wedding date. Set out a stamp pad and markers for guests to leave their thumbprints and signatures on the branches. Then showcase your poster for all to see.

Savor the Moment After months of planning, multiple checklists and perhaps a meltdown or two, your wedding day has finally arrived. Just when you thought the last decision had been made, you’re faced with one more significant choice: you can focus on the stress and chaos surrounding you or savor each moment of your special day. Here are tips on how to savor the moment: eDelegate, delegate, delegate when appropriate; let go of the little things eDon’t expect perfection, be flexible if something does not go as planned eTake one step at a time eBreathe in and out slowly when feeling overwhelmed eThink positively, even if others around you are not Jason Keefer Photography
eFocus on your future spouse; after all, he or she is the reason you’re there in the first place

Incorporating Stepchildren into the Wedding As the number of remarriages increase, more and more brides and grooms are bringing children into the marriage. While planning for a wedding, many parents feel it’s important to include all family members in the celebration as it marks the beginning of a stepfamily. Here are a few ideas that incorporate children into the wedding day: eInvite all family members to be part of the bridal party (ring bearer, flower girl, bridesmaid, etc.) eHonor each child in a family medallion ceremony eLight a unity candle together as a family eWrite vows for family members to recite eDance with stepchildren during the reception eCreate a photo album or scrapbook for each child after the wedding
Stepfamily Stats eAbout 43% of all marriages are remarriages for at least one of the adults eAbout 65% of remarriages involve children from a prior marriage eOver 25% of all brides and grooms have children from a previous marriage
