Our perceptions are altered by what society deems fit which affects what segregates the difference between a house and a home. But who is to say that that is correct? It drives me to think about the endless possibilities that can exist in a small area. Adaptation is key in this ever-changing world. It is all about experiencing something new, every moment, even for a place that has existed for decades. I believe by incorporating fluidity into rigidity, it allows people to interpret interior spaces freely. The design of interiors and art of organizing interior spaces are what makes

INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE

up architecture. Without those, all buildings will just be like any other.

This project aims to challenge how conventional hawker centres could be different. How could slight spacial changes help preserve its importance and change how both consumers and business owners view a Hawker Centre?

2019-2020 PROJECT TYPE : Adaptive Reuse ISSUE : The hawker trade is being recognised on and international level, but yet in Singapore, it is a dying trade.

MARKET ALLEY // 01 // HAWKERS?

So why is this part of Singapore slowly disappearing while at the same time getting recognised at an international level? While Singapore has so much history and culture, we as Singaporeans ask ourselves this constantly as we search for what exactly is our Singaporean identity. Being the oldest estate in Singapore, Tiong Bahru holds a lot of history from pre and post war times. While it holds so much essence, this would be the ideal location to preserve and enhance a few of our Singaporean traditions, the hawker culture and the kampong spirit. This scheme is represented here, where it can eventually be applied at other Hawker Centres.

INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE

In 2018, Singapore’s Hawker Culture was officially submitted to Unesco List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, yet ironically the hawker culture is dying in Singapore, where lesser people want to continue this trade.

INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE

MARKET ALLEY // 01 // LAYOUT EXPLORATION

By studying the different hawker stalls, one distinct characteristic found amongst all the stalls were the equipment used and the different types of display according to the types of food. To streamline, 5 different stall types were curated to catergorize the different stalls. A few icon layouts are conceptualized based on the different stalls, for a bigger scale concept layout. With that, a rough 3D sketch of each stall are drawn.

INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE

MARKET ALLEY // 01 // LAYOUT EXPLORATION

By combining the different stalls with different planning conditions, more inclusive layouts were created, allowing new and old hawkers to occupy shared spaces, allowing mentorship to take place. This mentorship can help both parties better understand how they can integrate themselves better into the business, from new generation trends and conventional hawker marketing.

INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE

From the conceptual layout stage, they were translated into a practical and working layout. With this meandering layout of the stalls, it allows the stalls to be viewed from both the seating area and public circulation area, which reinforces the open kitchen concept as a meal conversation starter.

INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE

INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE

INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE

MARKET ALLEY // 01 // EXPLODED ISOMETRIC

From the final concept layout, it is translated into the 2nd Storey of the Hawker Centre. This idea can eventually be duplicated to the other sides of the hawker centre and eventually to other hawker centres as well. Ceiling and flooring are to denote the different areas.

The stalls are rearranged, forming almost like a “S” shape throughout this portion of the site, allowing the kitchens to be viewed from many angles, which really emphasizes on the food making process of hawker foods, instead of only focusing on the end product in conventional hawker centres.

In this project, we were tasked to design a 10m x 10m hotel room. After looking at many hotel rooms, I found that most of them did not look very homely, and I felt that when people go on vacations, they would like to stay in a place where it felt like home even though it was temporary. So I went for a studio apartment concept, making my space an informal one.

Both spaces are split on purpose by elevating the bedroom, while at the same time ensuring not to isolate both the living room and the bedroom. To do so, both spaces were partitioned with a grid fence, instead of solid walls, so from either side, the other space is visible.

For the bathroom, it was made more spacious with an open concept. With a floor to ceiling window, a freestanding bathtub is placed in front of it to capitalize on the view. With a free standing bathtub, I the shower is designed in a way that will complement the openness in this bathroom.

2018 PROJECT TYPE : Commercial ISSUE : In 2030 as technology advances, Singapore will heavily rely on technology. With a building like Bras Basah Complex that has been around since 1980, shops there have a history and is a sentimental asset that makes up the building. With that, how is it possible to attract more patrons to this historical complex?

INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE

DESIGN INTENT : With such a small space, my intent was to incorporate flexible fixtures for interior designers working in that area, which allows dual functionality in hopes of fully maximising the use of space.

Before starting on concepts and ideation, I did an extensive site analysis on the site and its surroundings to help me better understand the dynamics of the place,

from types of patrons to what they do when they go to the Bras Basah complex. After studying the history of Bras Basah Complex and its area, I gained

INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE

a lot of information and got inspired.

By analysing the the landmarks around the site, it gives me a rough idea of the reason why people come to

this area and allows me to narrow down on the specific functions that I want to put in my space, to attract these people to Bras Basah Complex.

As Bras Basah Complex has been around

INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE

for a few decades, I compared it to a

newer retail bulding, giving me a better idea on how to create a unique and

different user experience to my users.
