Holly Rey Gallian, Soul Au Coaching and Development A fulfilling life is not something one can just imagine or wish into existence, it requires awareness, clarity and action. As part of my coaching framework, clients often tell me they need to set goals to achieve a particular lifestyle or dream they have for themselves. Goals, or objectives as I like to re-frame them as, can be hard, messy and require us to step outside our comfort zones to achieve them. They require us to connect to parts of ourselves we are uncomfortable utilizing or hold self-awareness about. Objectives can flop faster than a New Year’s resolution if they are not designed from the foundation up. continued on next page

As a certified life and mental performance coach who has dedicated her life to understanding the neuroscience behind transforming lives, values work (aka what matters most) and helping others achieve their wildest dreams, identifying and establishing objectives is a key component to the process of building a fulfilling life. First, we need to discover and identify what the primary objective is. Is it the “goal” you have stashed on some “maybe, somehow, some way, I could find time” sort of shelf or is it the “I need to begin implementing this life change now because I am not satisfied with where I am at and I cannot continue on like this” desire? You need to identify the most impactful objective which moves you forward and the values attached to it. I often describe values as being the most important things or aspects of your life which are demonstrated through your actions and behaviors - they must be something viscerally attached to you and could include examples such as integrity, family, spirituality, loyalty, health, etc. Once you have identified your values, you will need to review your objective to ensure the two are in alignment. You cannot achieve an objective without buy-in from yourself through your values. Second, you need to break the objective down by reverse engineering the steps from where you want to go into the baby steps it will take to accomplish it. Objectives are not found on a linear path, so ensure you are stepping back to map out as many paths and potential obstacles to create self-awareness and ways of responding through visualiza-
tion work. A helpful exercise I often walk clients through involves a visualization process and one you can do in a comfortable environment for yourself. First, I invite you to close your eyes and visualize the process of completing your objective and then write down the process through reverse engineering (with all details included, including everything related to your senses). As you visualize and write down these steps, you are creating an anchor in your brain and cues for your brain to begin problem solving for solutions. A process called encoding is when the information stored inside the brain’s hippocampus helps you determine long term memory and decisions about whether to keep the information or not. This cue allows you to better retain information for problem solving and decision-making skills creating a higher probability of success. I would also invite you to create a visual reminder of the process you designed above as visual cues add to your probability of success and can immediately remind you of a step you are accomplishing, as well as the version of you who has already accomplished this objective. Objectives compel us to distill them down into their basic steps, identify concrete, impactful action steps and then take them and the lessons along the way are merely opportunities for integration and growth. We must do the work to create a fulfilling life and must consider how we can best accomplish our objectives and pivot through the obstacles and hardships which could arise along the journey to our destination.
Finally, as you begin implementing the steps you have identified, I want to invite you to continue to check in and ask yourself, “What are the top 3 most impactful action steps I need to take towards my objective?” Be intentional and check in with yourself on a daily or weekly basis and assess your progress and what pivots around obstacles you have navigated and how you can do an
even better job in the day or week ahead in progressing towards the fulfilling life and dreams you are creating. The beauty of achieving your objective isn’t in the accomplishment, but the lessons, empowerment and confidence you gain by allowing your brain to create new neural pathways to solve even more complicated objectives in the future for yourself to move you closer to the fulfilling life you desire.

Humboldt General Hospital now offering pulmonary rehabilitation program Humboldt General Hospital is excited to introduce its groundbreaking Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program, offering a lifeline to residents of Northern Nevada grappling with the challenges of lung diseases.
As part of the new Physical Therapy Department, (which launched last month), the program is specifically tailored to assist individuals dealing with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), COVID-19, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, pulmonary fibrosis, and various other lung diseases and conditions. The initiative aims to empower participants by managing breathing problems, boosting stamina, and reducing breathlessness, ultimately breaking the debilitating cycle of lung disease. Clarissa Vincent, the respiratory director behind the program, emphasized its significance in enhancing not only physical health but also emotional well-being. “Patients with limited lung function experience a diminished quality of life as symptoms progress and activities of daily living become more difficult,” Vincent explained. “Unfortunately, for many individuals, this seemingly unstoppable fate means their emotional health
also suffers.” The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program takes a comprehensive approach, providing exercise training, self-management advice, nutrition counseling, and emotional support. Studies have shown that this patient-tailored intervention improves both physical and psychological well-being, enhancing the overall quality of life. Notably, the program has been proven to reduce future hospitalizations for individuals with chronic lung diseases. Collaboration is at the heart of the program’s success, with medical providers, exercise physiologists, and respiratory therapists working together to develop a customized and carefully coordinated program. All activities are structured and monitored, ensuring the safety and progress of participants. Education plays a pivotal role, with individual and group discussions covering topics continued on next page

such as nutrition and lung disease, breathing retraining, infection prevention/ bronchial hygiene, oxygen use, respiratory medications, stress management, and conserving energy. “We hope that those struggling with chronic lung diseases and conditions will take this chance to overcome their breathing challenges and stay active and independent,” Vincent expressed. “With their specially tailored program, participants will feel in control of their disease or condition instead of the other way around.” The program typically spans up to 36 sessions, but its duration varies based on individual needs and goals. Loved ones are encouraged to participate, providing additional support to program participants. To join the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program, potential participants need a physician referral, followed by pulmonary function tests and interviews with staff. The program is covered by most insurance companies, including Medicare, though some may require a co-pay or limit coverage to a certain number of visits. Individuals are advised to check with their insurance provider for specific details on coverage for pulmonary rehabilitation.
