STATE BOARD OF

DISTRICT 2

Orr, Angela Davis, “Doc” Paul

Sam

Question 1: With over two decades dedicated to the field of education, my background and experience align closely with the responsibilities and challenges of serving on the Nevada State Board of Education. I began my career as a history and government teacher, where I developed a deep commitment to nurturing critical thinking and leadership among students. My role expanded over the years to include significant curriculum development work at the Washoe County School District (WCSD), where I was instrumental in enhancing educational practices across social studies and disciplinary literacy.

Further extending my impact, I served as an instructor at the University of Nevada, Reno, teaching both pre-service and master’s students, which deepened my understanding of the educational landscape at multiple levels. Currently, I am the principal of Doral Academy of Northern Nevada, a five-star charter school renowned for its high educational standards and strategic planning prowess. Under my leadership, the academy has consistently met and exceeded benchmarks for student achievement and well-being.

My commitment to education extends beyond the classroom. I founded several local non-profits, including the Nevada Center for Civic Engagement, aimed at fostering civic education throughout the state. This work, combined with my appointment to the Nevada State Board of Education in 2022, has equipped me with a robust framework for educational policy and administration, underpinned by a firsthand understanding of classroom dynamics and school management.

Question 2: If I retain my seat on the Nevada State Board of Education, my commitment will remain focused on ensuring that every student, regardless of their background or location, receives a quality education. This belief drives my dedication to fostering inclusive, equitable educational policies that cater to all Nevada students.

My objective is to elevate Nevada’s educational standards into the top ten nationally. This involves ensuring all schools across the state have access to high-quality curriculum and continuous professional development for teachers, enhancing both student growth and academic excellence. Additionally, I emphasize the importance of creating safe and supportive educational environments where the social and emotional well-being of every family, student, and educator is prioritized.

As the principal of Doral Academy, a five-star charter school, I have seen the benefits of school choice firsthand and how it allows for tailored educational experiences that meet diverse student needs. My experiences have deepened my advocacy for school choice, underscoring its role in empowering parents and enhancing personalized learning.

Furthermore, I will continue to champion policies that ensure equitable resource distribution, particularly addressing the unique challenges faced by Northern Nevada. My approach is to ensure decisions are data-driven, reflecting the specific needs and strengths of various regions, thereby providing an effective and tailored educational strategy.

Through these initiatives, I am committed to transforming Nevada’s education system into a model of excellence that prepares every student not just for academic success but also for meaningful participation in college, careers, and civic life.

The pressing concern about the literacy crisis in our state fuels my candidacy for the Nevada State Board of Education District 2 seat. With Nevada ranking 43rd out of 50 states in a recent 2023 survey, it’s clear that urgent measures are needed to elevate our student literacy rate. We cannot afford to have our students lagging. I am committed to finding innovative ways to engage and support our students in achieving their academic and career goals.

My Education:

1978. Ph.D., Political Science (Communications minor) University of Utah.

1976. Certificate in Chinese Studies; National Chengchi University, Republic of China

1976. Graduate Certificate in Gerontology; University of Utah

1971. M.A., Political Science (Communications minor) San Diego State University.

1969. B.A., Political Science (Communications minor) California State University, Long Beach.

1967. A.A., Political Science (Communications minor) Santa Monica College.

3-time International Fulbright Scholar recipient in India, Israel, and Egypt

2-time National Science Foundation recipient

A National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship.

A Recipient of the Scholar-Diplomat Program at the U.S. State Department

Employment: College Professor (Just completed overall 52 years of college teaching)

48 years currently at Truckee Meadows Community College teaching American Government

18 years currently at UNLV Graduate Department teaching Domestic and International Terrorism

We cannot afford to have our students lagging. I am committed to finding innovative ways to engage and support our students in achieving their academic and career goals. As a candidate for the Nevada State Board of Education-District 2 seat, my primary focus is the urgent need for our students to be successful and technologically literate. This is not just for their personal growth but also the economic prosperity of Nevada in this increasingly competitive landscape. We are at a critical juncture in the era of technology and artificial intelligence. We must excel in technological literacy in education now and in the future. We must equip our students with the skills and knowledge to thrive in this rapidly evolving technological landscape.

A recent technological survey last year estimated that technical automation could potentially eliminate 73 million U.S. jobs by 2030, equating to 46% of the current jobs. To face this challenge head-on, we need solutions that are nothing short of a skills revolution, not least because 85% of all jobs in 2030 may not have been invented yet. We are in a technological revolution, so teaching must be emphasized in Math, Science, and technological literacy. We must prepare our students for their future and not be left behind. It’s a brave new technological world that is being thrust upon them.

Sam Brown is a Purple Heart recipient, a small businessman, a committed husband and father, and he represents a new generation of conservative leadership.

As the oldest of five children, he quickly learned the importance of servant leadership, and his parents instilled in him an undying commitment to the service of others. Sam always had a desire to serve his country but, when he witnessed the 9/11 terrorist attacks, that desire became an ironclad resolve.

One year later, Sam was accepted to the United States Military Academy at West Point.

After Graduating from West Point, he was commissioned as an Infantry Officer and was assigned to the 3rd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division at Fort Hood. In 2008, Sam was deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Only four months into his deployment, Sam was on a mission when he received word that another nearby platoon had been ambushed. So he led his team into battle to provide support for his fellow soldiers.

Upon entering the engagement area a roadside bomb detonated under the fuel tank of his vehicle, leaving him drenched in diesel and covered in flames. By the grace of God, Sam’s gunner was able to extinguish the flames before they took his life.

Following the injuries he sustained, Sam was medically retired from the US Military as a Captain. In the three years following the explosion in Afghanistan, Sam underwent intense physical rehabilitation. During this process of recovery, Sam recognized that God had given him a new life. A life that was intended to be dedicated to the service of God and Country.

During the three years he spent in recovery, Sam fell in love, married, and started a family with U.S. Army First Lieutenant, Amy Larsen, who worked as his Burn Unit Dietitian.

Knowing that his career in the military had come to an end, Sam understood that if he was going to rededicate his life to service, he would have to take a different path.

So, Sam enrolled in Southern Methodist University’s MBA (Masters in Business Administration) Program, looking to grow his resume and experience. Once Sam graduated, he took a job as a manager at an Amazon fulfillment center, while also using his newfound set of skills to launch a small business that provides emergency pharmaceutical support to Veterans outside of the VA.

Sam is proud that the business he founded in pursuit of his American Dream has provided life changing medical support to countless veterans, coast to coast.

Once again, Sam is being called to serve his country in a new way. That’s why today, he’s running to represent Nevada in the U.S. Senate.

UNITED STATES SENATE — Libertarian —

Cunningham, Chris

Question 1:

First, I am a non-career politician who is looking to make a difference for Nevadans and limit the amount of government overreach that the system currently provides. I previously was a Nevada State Senate Candidate in 2022 for District 10. I have over 6 years as a licensed insurance agent in the state of Nevada as well as a dozen other states, assisting families with affordable healthcare options off of the marketplace.

Question 2:

My platform is based around Libertarian principles, not policy. Libertarians champion free market capitalism, supporting civil liberties (ie: first and second amendment rights, freedom of association, freedom of religion). Most importantly, central to libertarian philosophy is the non-aggression principle, which asserts that individuals should not initiate force or coercion against others. Libertarians believe that the use of force should be reserved for self-defense or the defense of others that have aggressive advances.

My key issues I intend to focus on is streamlining our federal budget, our immigration system, and removing the United States from foreign conflicts we should not be involved in. We need to stabilize the economy and hold politicians accountable in Washington for driving up TRILLIONS of dollars in debt. Emphasizing free market principles without government interference is paramount to the success of catalyzing economic growth.

The crisis at the border is more prevalent than ever, and I believe that we can secure our borders while streamlining the immigration process, which will facilitate legal entry and residency for those individuals from abroad who wish to contribute positively to the economy.

I don’t intend to be part of the establishment and I am an independent thinker looking to bring fresh ideas and perspectives to Washington DC at the young age of 32.

opment while also protecting more than 14,000 acres of new wilderness.

Question 2: I’m focused on getting things done for our state – not on playing the same old Washington games. I’ve never hesitated to put partisanship aside or take on special interests to deliver results for hardworking Nevadans.

Working across party lines is at the core of my work. For example, I’m pushing to pass a bipartisan plan that will help police departments across Nevada hire and retain more officers, and I’m supporting a bipartisan package to secure our border and stop the flow of deadly drugs like fentanyl.

In the Senate, I’m looking out for the middle class and that’s why I’m focused on lowering everyday costs for hardworking families on everything from prescription drugs and housing to gas and groceries.

I’m committed to defending Nevada’s growing agricultural economy. I have joined bipartisan efforts in this Congress and stood up to my own party on passing a Senate bill to block beef imports from Paraguay that would hurt Nevada cattlemen, as well as voting against regulations of U.S. waterways that hurt Nevada’s farmers and ranchers.

Mining is a critical part of Nevada’s rural economy and supports tens of thousands of good-paying jobs. I secured a bipartisan provision in the CHIPS and Science Law to strengthen Nevada’s critical mineral industry and mining workforce, and I helped introduce bipartisan legislation to protect critical mineral production in Nevada and across the West.

If Nevada voters send me back to the Senate, I will continue to make delivering for rural Nevada a top priority

UNITED STATES SENATE

Hansen,

Question 1 Background:

As an Independent American Party candidate I would bring a very different political philosophy of Constitutional limited government to Washington, D.C. It has not mattered if we elected Democrats or Republicans, their policies continue to undermine and destroy families, small businesses, mining, family farms, ranches and America.

Our Constitutional Republic was founded on limited government and self-government by individuals. The more government we have, the more problems they create, the more bureaucrats we must pay for and the less freedom and prosperity we enjoy.

Trillion in debt which has caused massive inflation, dramatically increasing the cost of food and fuel harming all Americans.

The military industrial complex is running our foreign policy so the U.S. is continually engaged in foreign undeclared unconstitutional wars. Our military is in 170,000 countries and territories. Bring them home.

The schools have become indoctrination centers destroying our youth and trashing our American values and interfering with parental rights. Return schools to local control.

Vicious criminals and terrorists are crossing our borders through the treason of open borders which makes us all vulnerable. Our federal government uses our tax dollars to provide services and living expenses for illegal immigrants. This must stop.

The twin parties have failed to secure our lives, our liberties, and our families. Vote Independent American.

Question 1: I am proud to be ranked one of the most bipartisan and effective members of the U.S. Senate.

My record shows that I work with Republicans and Democrats to get things done for Nevadans.

I helped write and pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which is bringing millions of dollars to upgrade and improve rural infrastructure – boosting schools, supporting smaller airports, investing in clean water projects, and expanding access to rural broadband. I helped pass the PACT Act to expand health care for veterans exposed to toxic burn pits, and now I’m working to bring a new VA hospital to Reno that will better serve veterans across Northern Nevada. My bipartisan bill to help fund more mobile health clinics in underserved areas was signed into law in 2022, and I’m leading efforts with members of both parties to address Nevada’s doctor and nursing shortage and expand access to health care in rural areas. In the Senate, I have worked with my colleagues to secure millions of federal dollars for local community projects across rural Nevada. That includes over 10 million dollars in the past two years for Humboldt and Lander Counties for wastewater treatment facilities, crime prevention, tribal water and sewage lines, safe routes for schools, a business incubator, and more.

I am also proud to have passed my Lander County Land Management and Conservation Act in 2022. This law transferred land to Lander County to strengthen small airports, water infrastructure, outdoor recreation, and economic devel-

I have worked for these goals of Constitutional Limited Government my entire life, starting at age 19 when I first testified at the Nevada Legislature and have done so every Legislative session since. My record of defending families and taxpayers is well documented. I have worked to defend individual liberties of speech, religion and the right to keep and bear arms. I have raised the money from freedom minded individuals, so I can participate in the cause of liberty at the Nevada Legislature. I am Independent of the big moneyed interests of both parties.

I am well versed at how government works. I know the process and have been engaged in a broad range of state and national issues. I am a native Nevadan now living in Elko. I am married with four children and seventeen grandchildren. I graduated magna cum laude from Brigham Young University.

You can be assured that if I am elected to the U.S. Senate, Nevadans and their families will be represented.

Question 2 Philosophy:

I am running for U.S. Senate as an Independent American Party candidate supporting the restoration of the constitutional principles in the tradition of our founders.

We believe in protecting the God given rights of all Americans as protected in the U.S. Constitution:

• The critical freedoms of speech and assembly.

• Freedom of Religion uninfringed by government.

• The individual right to keep and bear arms.

The Fourth Amendment right to privacy.

• Medical freedom, control over our individual medical decisions.

Parental rights to determine the upbringing of our own children.

• The right to life for ourselves and our posterity.

• Securing our borders.

Supporting free enterprise.

Our Republic has become a Socialist State with over $35

Question 1:

I worked with Outward Bound and the National Outdoor Leadership School in New Hampshire, Wyoming, Alaska, and Latin America. I also joined the payments group of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve in Washington D.C. as a senior analyst.

Question 2:

My goals are bipartisanship to get things done for my district, state, and country ahead of any party. My philosophy is putting people first so that institutions, be they government or corporations, serve them rather than the other way around.

STATE ASSEMBLY DISTRICT 32 — Republican —

Hansen, Alexis

I am a proud Nevada girl. My great-grandfather, Jake Johnson, was the Sheriff of Lincoln County, Nevada in the late 1800s. My grandfather, Alexander Lloyd, was Superintendent of Mines in Lincoln County and my father, Johnson W. Lloyd was the youngest elected County Clerk in Lincoln County, the D.A. of Esmeralda County, and D.A. of Eureka county for over 30 years.

Being raised by a strong single mother, always living paycheck to paycheck, has given me empathy. I know what it feels like to have the utilities turned off and eat pancakes for every meal. I also developed a firm resolve to overcome.

Having a charming, brilliant father who suffered from alcoholism taught me what pitfalls in life to avoid and I developed a sense of pride in his success overcoming his addiction. I was blessed with loving, human parents and I learned valuable lessons from them.

I am an optimist.

I look for solutions instead of excuses.

Can’t is not an option.

I studied journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno. The best decision I ever made was to marry my high school sweetheart, Ira Hansen. Together, we took on the world with youthful enthusiasm! We married, bought a home and started a plumbing business at the ripe old age of 20. We have weathered business challenges that have taken others out of business. We have consoled each other through tragedy and trials. We have raised 8 of the most amazing children and are the proud grandparents of 20. We like to jokingly remind our children, all college graduates - who hold degrees in fields that make us feel both pride and wonder - that Ira and I have a PhD in LIFE.

I am also a licensed Nevada Realtor. Collaborating daily with so many hard-working families of Nevada is something that has always provided me with a great deal of joy and purpose.

Our children are grown and the time has come for me to put to use the business sense, the mom sense and the common sense I have developed throughout the years. I have an innate desire to learn and to serve. I am up for the challenge and would be honored to serve my fellow Nevadans in the State Assembly. I would appreciate your vote this coming election day.

No response was received from this candidate.

Question 2: I have been fortunate to develop a strong understanding of financial reporting and I pledge fiscal responsibility to our County. I believe in hard work and relationships with all of rural communities.

I will support the progress made toward mitigating the nitrate issue in Grass Valley. I hope to be a good listener and fair steward for all Humboldt County residents. I hope to be a voice for the people of Humboldt County.

I will be citizen- focused and evidenced- based on any policy-making that is brought before the Commission.

I believe in honesty, integrity, and transparency. I am morally ethical and I feel strongly that I will be an asset to the commission and feel I could have a great working relationship with our current board. I feel I could help navigate our County through many changes and growth that are before us.

My name is Paige Brooks and I feel strongly that I need to give back to the community I love by leading and serving in local government. I am honest, ambitious, dedicated and experienced; qualities which I will use to be your Humboldt County Commissioner Seat B if given the opportunity!

Question 1: When I was elected in 2020. I said I was not a “Politician” This still holds true. Although my understanding of the workings of local govt is much better now. My experience as a local business owner has served me well in the last 4 years. The county is a business in my eyes and should be ran like one. I have served for the previous 4 years and been thru 4 County budget cycles. I continue to learn every year. I currently serve as chairman of the board of county commissioners. I sit on several different boards within the county. I work and live in the county. I am a problem solver by nature.

Question 2: My philosophy about this office. Think and weigh all facts before speaking on any subjects and issues. Be available! Do your homework, make phone calls, gather as much information as you can from people. Don’t let any fears stand in your way of doing what you feel is the best thing for all of Humboldt County now and in the future. Have all those tough conversations.

What are my goals for the office? My goal is to have a balanced budget sheet without putting additional burden on the taxpayers. Support the board on recruitment for a Replacement for our current retiring Comptroller. This position is essential to the county commission. Continue to support our new county manager towards the goals and vision the board has set. Continue to monitor the federal/State government on land and water control issues. Explore economic development opportunities that are a good fit for Humbold County. I look forward to serving Humbold county for another 4 years as a commissioner. Thank you for your support!

Question 1: Hello, I’m Paige Brooks Humboldt County Commissioner, Seat B Candidate. I was born in Winnemucca and have lived here nearly all my life. Having been a successful business owner for over 25 years, I have developed a strong understanding of financial reporting and pledge fiscal responsibility for Humboldt County. Running my own business also allows me to set my own schedule to have the flexibility to attend events and manage the county’s business, no matter the day or time.

Having a long history of community service to Humboldt County, I intend to dedicate my time to this community as I have been doing for many years.

Background and Experience:

Commitment to Humboldt General Hospital: Since my appointment to the Hospital Board of Trustees last December by the Humboldt County Board of Commissioners, I have dedicated myself to understanding the challenges and opportunities our hospital faces. As a member of the HGH Finance Committee, I am acutely aware of the financial and technical difficulties Humboldt General Hospital has endured. I am committed to helping to ensure our hospital not only continues its progress but also thrives as a cornerstone of healthcare in our community.

Vision for the Future: My vision is to build upon the progress we have made by:

Enhancing financial transparency and accountability, Ensuring high-quality care remains accessible to all residents, Supporting our outstanding staff in attracting top talent to our facility.

With your support, I will strive to help make Humboldt General Hospital an institution we can all trust and be proud of. I am fully committed to this cause and ask for your vote to continue our journey towards excellence in healthcare.

in our community. It is important to talk to youth and adults about the role of Justice Court. I look forward to working with the qualified staff at Justice Court. I will not be afraid to make the “unpopular” judgement when needed. Courts at every level are charged with ensuring the American people the promise of justice under the law and this means acting as a guardian of the Constitution for all involved in the system.

Hello fellow Winnemucca’s residents, my name is Roel Hilomen and I am running for School Board of Trustees Seat C. My history in education is limited from my experience as a Saint Francis High School graduate in Mountain View, California to my time in United States Marines after high school and attending San Jose State University as a Biochemist major. I’ve worked for biotech companies over ten years in California and as an armed security guard for the Federal Deposit Insurance Company (FDIC) before coming to Winnemucca Nevada. While in San Francisco I was a PTA executive for my daughter’s school. My daughters has since made their way as successful working members in California economy. I want to share that success and experience to the new generation in anyway possible. Thank you.

Mavity, Mike

I have been a resident of Humboldt County for 28 years. My wife and I raised our 3 children here. I’ve been an active member of this community, involved with the Winnemucca Century Club, the United Methodist Church, the Boys & Girl Club, and more. I have always had an interest in the legal system and the Justice of Peace position in rural Nevada counties is a unique opportunity for a citizen to serve the judicial system. The opportunity to run for this position only comes along every 6 years. Justice of the Peace is a demanding, 24/7 position, and I am ready for that commitment. Humboldt County has elected men and women to the Justice of the Peace position from backgrounds similar to mine. I come from a business background, bringing strong skills in management and communication which will apply well to our court room. The roll of Justice of the Peace requires more than legal knowledge, it requires integrity and a connection to this community. I’ve spent years getting to know our residents, having conversations about the concerns and challenges we see here. I will bring patience, courtesy, and respect to this position I will carefully hear the information and recommendations presented to me in court. Simply put, I will apply the law with common sense and without bias. Justice Court is a limited jurisdiction court, but the outcomes affect the safety and welling being of Humboldt County, and I care deeply about this community.

Goals

Since filing for office in January I have spent many hours observing in Justice Court, reviewing NRS, and studying specific court cases that have been brought to my attention. I am closely following the Nevada Code of Judicial Conduct, as judicial candidates are held to a high level of rules and ethics. I have attended Humboldt County Commission meetings when agenda items apply to Justice Court and I have had many conversations with law enforcement, agency representatives and local citizens. I would like to see the count calendar function more efficiently with fewer delays and continuances. I will continue to make sure that there is clear communication between Justice Court and District Court. Misdemeanor domestic battery cases need to be handled in a timelier manner so that cases can come to trial if necessary. Even with bail reform, some bail amounts need to remain higher, especially involving crimes against juveniles or involving repeat offenders. I will bring a new energy to this position. Justice of the Peace should be a part of civic education

Question 1: I am Jeff Dawson and I am a candidate for Justice of the Peace. After receiving my bachelors degree, I located to Winnemucca where I have been a resident of Humboldt County for 36 years. I am a former 24 year law enforcement officer in Humboldt County where I served as a patrolman, sergeant, and head law enforcement officer for Humboldt County School District. I am currently in my 10th year at Walmart overseeing the asset protection division. I also served as the market asset protection manager for 13 supercenters in Northern Nevada. During my 24 years as a law enforcement officer, I received invaluable training in DUI law, traffic law and investigations, search and seizure law, domestic violence law, issuance of temporary restraining orders (TPO), investigator training, sexual assault training, right to counsel training, and landlord tenant laws as well as a number of courses pertaining to the protection of law enforcement officers and other first responders. I have testified in justice court, district court, and federal court. I have a strong understanding of courtroom procedures and decorum and have worked closely with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, Winnemucca Police Department, Nevada State Police Highway Patrol, Parol and Probation, Nevada Division of Investigations, Bureau of Indian Affairs, as well as both the district attorney’s office, public defender’s office, and other private attorneys.

Question 1: When my father retired from the Navy after 23 years and two wars; he bought a farm where I was raised until leaving to join the military. I am a Viet Nam vet where I was a Squad Leader.

I worked 20 years underground for two different mining companies, and was a Foreman for both companies. I quit the underground mines, and started working open pit, where I spent 24+ years as an operator, Foreman, and Mine Production General Manager.

While working underground, and supporting my family, I attended College, taking enough credits to qualify as full time, starting as pre-med, then changing my major to Business Management. My responsibilities at the mine where I worked, forced me to pull out of college during the first semester of my third year.

When working 8 hr. shifts underground, I bid on and worked commercial timber sales in the National Forest.

I also have had 3 Contractor’s licenses in Nevada; A General Contractor, Electrical Contractor, and Paving & Excavating Contractor.

On my days off before retiring, my wife and I spent 3+ years building our house just outside Lovelock, where we live today.

Question 2: First and foremost, I want to ensure that citizens of Humboldt County are represented in court and that citizen rights are protected, including your constitutional rights. I will ensure that the justice court continues to strive for professionalism while ensuring that defendants and victims are allowed their day in court without delay. Secondly, this is my home; it is important to keep Humboldt County safe and a place where victims of crime know that justice will be served within the scope of the law. My career has been dedicated to serving the public. My two sons are both serving as public servants as a sheriff deputy and firefighter. Maintaining law and justice is a part of who I am. I have the skills, education, and experience that are relevant and transferable to the work of a Justice of the Peace. I have demonstrated good judgment in the face of real or perceived conflict and threats. I have proven my ability in making sound, practical, and timely decisions with complex factors. Protecting the citizens of Humboldt County against violent crimes and repeat offenders while ensuring that we can enjoy the quality of life we have come to know without worry or fear of dangerous criminals is my utmost priority. At the end of the day, Justice of the Peace is not a job or a career. It is a role that must be served for the people. I would appreciate your vote.

Question 2: I believe we need a county Manager/Administrator to bring all of the different departments together working toward the same goal, and eliminating many of the inefficiencies by not having good short term and long term plans.

I attend most Commissioner’s Meetings, and see resolutions voted on and passed, then a month or two later the affected departments either do not even know about it, or have not acted on it. There is limited accountability.

We need fiscal responsibility with knowledge of Government accounting standards, and a formal procedure for each department to arrive at a rational budget with the documentation to back it up. The budget process should be methodical. Started months ahead of time, and not rushed.

Pershing County has two advisory committees; One in Imlay and the other in Grass Valley. They are great sources of information as well as the regular 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month Commissioner’s meeting, open to the public. The public should attend any or all of these meetings that fit their schedule and feel free to voice their concerns directly to the Pershing County Commissioners.

COUNTY RECORDERAUDITOR

Hamilton, Melanie

Question #1

My family and I have lived in Lovelock for 30 years. Our children and now grandchildren live, work and go to school here (with the exception of one who lives in Virginia). Lovelock is our home.

I was appointed to the Recorder-Auditor position in November of 2023 and I am enjoying the job. I have worked in the private sector in an accounting role for over 35 years. 26 of those years I worked at the local cattle feedlot. No matter where I have worked, numbers have been my field of concentration.

I have been through almost an entire year as the appointed Recorder-Auditor so I have seen most of what can pop up in the position. It seems I learn something new every day which makes the job refreshing, rewarding and challenging. Government accounting was a whole new aspect of the field for me, but I am learning and have had help from so many that give of their knowledge. Recording was also new to me, but I have had an excellent teacher in my Chief Deputy Recorder. I am learning the many rules of the Recording world.

I look forward to many years working for the people of Pershing County.

Question #2

My philosophy and goals for the Auditor portion of this Office is to be fiscally responsible with the Revenues and Expenditures of Pershing County and to employ staff that has the same outlook of that fiscal responsibility with regards to Accounts Payable and Payroll. And as the Recorder, I would want to provide efficient, courteous and quality service to the Public so they may have accurate, legible and easily retrievable records.

I ask that you allow me to continue in this job I love and Vote for me as your Recorder-Auditor in November.

Nichols, Chris

Question 1: I have worked in the non-profit sector for more than 20 years, managing budgets, applying for grants, organizing and executing projects and events including experience supporting government agencies and programs such as the Bureau of Land Managements Wild Horse and Burro Program. I am an exceptional communicator, motivator and team player.

Question 2: I have spent years advocating for our natural resources on our public land, in particular as they relate to and impact our nation’s wild horses. It is my belief that the conservation of agriculture and natural resources is more critical today than ever before. Raising awareness and education, for example, Ag in the Classroom programs will play a critical role in the overall health and longevity of our natural resources and wildlands.

Hendrickson, Edward

I have dedicated my life to Pershing County making it my home for approximately 60 years. After graduating from Pershing County High School and the University of Nevada, Reno with a degree in metallurgical engineering, I returned to Lovelock, where I successfully raised hay, grain, and cattle for 17 years and then became an educator for about 30 years.

I have always been passionate about education and have served the youth of our community as a coach, teacher, athletic director, and principal. Presently, I teach mathematics for Great Basin College. During my tenure as principal, the middle school and its staff earned designation as an Exemplary School by the Nevada Department of Education, the highest level of recognition achievable. Out of 660 Nevada schools, only 11 schools were so honored. I was also honored as Principal of the Year by the Reno Gazette-Journal.

For 12 years, I was a trustee of the Pershing General Hospital and practiced the concept that a board united in pursuit of a shared vision can perform wonders for our community. The hospital board, along with the hospital’s staff, transformed a hospital that was $1 million in debt into a hospital that is now operating in the black.

During my tenure as hospital board president, the Pershing County High School’s (PCHS) principal contacted the hospital to see if it could help PCHS with the COVID testing required if the school wanted to have a football season. Since the school district could not do the testing themselves, the Pershing General Hospital and its staff stepped up and performed the testing for the school district for free. Later that year, PCHS’s football team won the Northern Conference championship.

I have been a member of the Pershing Hospital Foundation since its inception and have served as the Foundation’s president. Annually, the Foundation holds a fundraising dinner, which, over the past seven years, has awarded 15 scholarships to local students totaling $63,760.00. This year’s fundraising Basque-style dinner will be held at the Lovelock Community Center on Saturday, August 10.

Question 1: I’ve read our state constitution and have drafted many legislative amendments, which you can find here: https://linktr. ee/47cardiff

Question 2: I’m a registered nonpartisan pro-Trump millennial. I’m aware of exactly how the deep state has corrupted our Legislative Branch. The NRS was designed to supersede our state constitution, and our “inalienable” Right to Liberty (defined as: freedom from oppressive government) has been eroding ever since (1957). The NRS is over 13,000+ pages long, and it contains countless infringements on our constitutional rights all throughout numerous statutes. We will be much better off (liberty restored) once that NRS is completely null and void. If elected, I will primarily post daily recap videos during the legislative session(s) on my Twitter or Truth account, and publicly call for each corrupt legislator to be recalled from office (article 2 section 9) each time they misbehave. I have deep experience with our statewide voter data, and will catalyze any recall efforts by a grassroots group of indirect constituents. I don’t trust the Republican Party leadership, their apps or data. We can do this without them. The NRS was credited to Russel West McDonald. Let’s destroy the deep state once and for all. Who’s with me?!

Carruth, Marci L.

While a teacher, I wrote two grants to the E.L. Cord Foundation totaling $54,000, which was used to purchase and erect the school district’s greenhouse. I have served as president of the Pershing County Alumni Association and was recently inducted into its Hall of Fame.

My educational philosophy is that all children can learn and develop a positive self-image when provided with a nurturing environment. Affirmative two-way communication between parents and the school district’s staff is essential. I endeavor to live by Abraham Lincoln’s maxim, “No man stands so tall as when he stoops to help a child.”

Throughout the years, I have been elected to various positions and have always been blessed with the support and trust of the people of Pershing County. I believe that my broad range of experiences can continue to serve the people of Pershing County well into the future.

Question 1: Hi, I’m Marci (Talcott) Carruth. I’m a 4th generation Pershing County graduate. I have been serving on school board for 2 years as I was appointed half way through the term. I have since attended many mandatory and non mandatory trainings to help teach me what how to effectively and legally serve the people of Pershing County and all of our children. I am a mother of 4, ages 17, 10, 8 and 4. I understand the needs and struggles of our children today and hope to be able to continue to serve and make sure that our children have all the best opportunities possible.

Question 2: My approach to school board governance is always doing what’s best for kids. One of the ways we can do what’s best for kids is by taking care of our staff. Happy supported staff equals better student outcomes. I hope you’ll vote for me so I can continue to do this important work.

MAYOR - CITY OF LOVELOCK

No response was received from these candidates.

Thompson, Kelly D.

1. Baqckground and experience:

Throughout my 24-year career in the correctional system, I consistently went above and beyond, spearheading the transformation of the Medical department at Lovelock Correctional Center into the flagship of the Department of Corrections. This involved skillful budget management, proactive safety measures, and the provision of humane treatment for both staff and inmates. Collaborating with the State Attorney General’s office, the Warden, and other departments, we ensured the well-being of everyone within the institution. My efforts culminated in being named the Employee of the Year for the entire Medical Department of Corrections in the North in 2017. In my current role at the county museum, I’ve led the implementation of a series of groundbreaking initiatives in close partnership with the Board and Docent. Together, we have improved the museum’s physical infrastructure, updating buildings and captivating exhibits. Through strategic media coverage, the Museum and Town of Lovelock have enjoyed international attention, resulting in a surge in tourism and economic growth for our community. Our collaborative efforts have led to the highest number of tours and donations in the museum’s history. Furthermore, I have championed the inclusion of the local Paiute tribe within the museum, providing them with a dedicated space to showcase their rich heritage, fostering a deeper sense of community and understanding. My unwavering dedication to showcasing our city’s extraordinary history is driven by the belief that it serves as a powerful catalyst for boosting visitor engagement and driving economic prosperity for our community.

2. Philosophy and goals:

I am fully committed to improving our city for all residents. I will tirelessly address the issues that matter most to our community and advocate for policies that promote a fair and inclusive society. This includes cleaning up existing buildings around the city, creating new safe events and activities for our youth, especially during the evenings and summer months, and working to bring new businesses to town that will benefit the entire community, not just a select few. I believe in being transparent and accountable to the people who elect me. I will always communicate openly, seek input, and fight for the issues that are in the best interest of the community. I understand the importance of working together with other city council members, county commissioners, community boards, and community members to find solutions to complex issues. I will prioritize collaboration and teamwork to ensure that we can achieve our goals together.

Forgeron, Hy

As your candidate for Argenta Township Justice of the Peace, I bring a unique skill set to the office. In addition to being the only candidate with a license to practice law and to have ever actually tried a case before a court and jury, I am admitted to practice before all Nevada courts, civil, criminal and tribal, and federal courts up to and including the US Supreme Court and US Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces.

I have served our community as a prosecutor, a public defender and a private attorney. In doing so, I have prosecuted criminal cases from stop sign violations to capital murder. As a defense attorney I got the first “not guilty” jury verdict in a battered wife murder defense in Nevada, beating the Nevada Attorney General’s special prosecutor team on behalf of my client.

Additionally, I won several criminal cases as a special deputy for our current District Attorney when he was DA in Eureka County, including putting a multi-count child molester in prison.

The Justice Court is rightly called “the Peoples’ Court”. That’s where my focus will be - on protecting the people and their rights. To me, “justice reform” means putting dangerous criminals in jail and keeping them there. There will be no revolving door - free bail philosophy in my court. I respect private property and there will be no “squatters rights” in my court. I believe in the 2nd Amendment so no government agency will be taking your firearms in my court.

As to non-legal experience, among other things I’m proud to have raised a family here and that my daughters graduated from Battle Mountain High School. I was elected and served as president of the school Board and on the local PTA. I contributed to and sponsored the first Sober Seniors party at the Civic Center.

role. This experience has provided me with an intimate understanding of the challenges and opportunities that our community faces. During my career, I’ve held various leadership positions, where I have been responsible for managing teams, budgets, and large-scale projects. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Management and have earned a Human Resources Certification, further refining my leadership abilities and business acumen. My background equips me with the skills necessary to address our needs while navigating the complexities of county governance.

I am deeply committed to the well-being and relationships of our community. I have been involved in local community initiatives and I have gained a strong understanding of the needs and concerns of Lander County residents. My first order of business is cleaning up our communities, which I have already started, and strengthening/repairing the relationships between our county and its people.

My philosophy is centered around transparency, accountability, and responsiveness to the needs of the people. Do the work and be useful! Residents’ voices are to be heard respectfully and feedback given in a timely manner. Everyone needs to work together for our county to succeed.

Having worked in the mining industry for three decades, I understand the importance of balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship. There are big projects in the future and we need the best leaders possible to make sure they are successful and sustainable.

In addition to economic development. I will advocate for investments in our roads, utilities, and emergency services to ensure they meet the needs of a growing population.

Above all, my goal is to ensure that Lander County remains a great place to live, work, and raise a family. I will work closely with residents, businesses, and local organizations to create a community where everyone has the opportunity to succeed, and I will strive to make decisions that reflect the interests of all to the best of my ability. I can’t do this without your support, please register and vote. Thank you!

My name is Lamont Edgar, and I am seeking the position of Lander County Commissioner for District 4. For nearly 50 years, I have been a proud resident of Lander County, where I have had the privilege of raising my family alongside my wife, Sarah. Together, we have four children who are now successful adults.

My deep-rooted connection to this community is one of the driving factors in my desire to serve as County Commissioner. I believe it is my duty to contribute to public service to give back to the community that allowed us to live the lives that we have! I show up to work and do exactly what I say I am going to do. My decision making will be clear and concise.

Professionally, I bring almost 30 years of experience from the mining industry, which is one of the cornerstones of our local economy. I’ve had the privilege of working with, and learning from, some great people and leaders that will bring value to this

My name is James Matheus, I am running for re-election to the Lander County Hospital District Seat C. If elected, this will be my final term.

The Board has made great progress to ensure the viability and longevity of our hospital and clinic as shown in our strong financial portfolio. BMGH has consistently given annual increases, merit bonuses for the past two years and is investing in the future of our employees through

enhanced training budgets and scholarships.

The strong operational practices and interest income from net proceeds of minerals has allowed BMGH to reinvest in the facility, infrastructure, and medical equipment. The Hospital Board presented a grant of $168,000 to Agape Hospice to aid in their certification process and providing office space in the John Peters Building until they receive their certification. The BMGH success has allowed us to improve the Emergency Department for HIPPA compliance, provide 7 private acute/swing beds for better patient care, add an isolation room and a behavioral health observation room, refurbish the laboratory and radiology depart ments, refurbish and add new business office space, build a new pharmacy and add more handicap accessible parking. BMGH will also pursue the addition of minor medical procedures performed in our new procedure room, such as outpatient minor surgeries and colonoscopies.

BMGH applied and received two important grants that have enabled BMGH to improve and add new radiological services. The first grant obtained through Nevada Rural Hospital Partners paid for an MRI and trailer that we share with Lovelock, Haw thorne, and Yerington. The second grant purchased a new 128 slice CT Scanner and 3D Mammography System.

The Hospital Board has authorized the search for additional medical providers to expand the needs of Lander County res idents. BMGH has made strong progress to provide a robust behavioral health service and working to improve on woman’s health as well as family health.

As a board member I work toward improving the hospital and clinic for the benefit of the community. I am proud of what I have achieved as a Board Trustee and look forward to serving another term. I will be more than happy to answer any questions by a call or text 775-635-9748 or email at [jrmatheus@sbcglobal.net].
