Personal safety Everyone is responsible for their own personal safety. The following are some things you might like to think about: Make sure someone knows where you are. Tell your family or friends when you will be returning. If you carry a mobile phone make sure it is charged and has credit. Use the abbreviation ICE in your phone for your main contact number In Case of Emergency. Trust your instincts and stay alert. Use a reputable taxi company rather than walk home alone. Keep expensive items hidden from view. Don’t accept lifts from people you don’t know. Never assume it won’t happen to you.

Safety online It’s important to know how to stay safe online, whether stay safe if you follow a few common sense rules: Remember that people you meet over the Internet might not be who they say they are. Some adults may pretend to be a young person and try and persuade you to meet with them – be careful. If you do decide to meet up with people you’ve talked to over the Internet make sure you let your parents or public place – get an adult to go with you as they can always leave when the person you’re meeting is who they say they are.

If you wouldn’t be happy for your Mum to see it, don’t upload it!

If you see something on the Internet that worries or upsets you or you think you’re being cyberbullied let an adult know as soon as possible. If you use social networking sites make sure you set your privacy settings properly. Remember some colleges, universities, and employers use social networking sites to check out potential candidates.

Be careful what personal information you make available online. Keep your passwords private; the stronger your password the harder it is for someone to hack into your account. If you’re shopping online make sure the site is secure – check that the padlock or the ‘https’ appears in the address bar when your details are requested. Remember that viruses can be spread through email, if you’re not sure about something delete it. Keep anti-virus software up-to-date.

Staying safe at work Your employer has a duty to provide you with a safe working environment. This includes where you work, how you work, and the equipment you use. When you start work your employer should tell you about health and safety procedures in your workplace, which might include: accident reporting who to tell if something is broken or faulty how to use, wear, and store protective equipment, if required. Health and safety at work is everybody’s responsibility: If something looks unsafe tell someone – don’t assume someone else will do it. Don’t put yourself or fellow workers at risk. Use guards and safety equipment as appropriate.

Safe work is team work
