On Melbourne Cup day , plenty of once-a-year punters tend to have a bet, which can lead to big betting pools and some capable gallopers pushed out to nice odds for an each-way bet. Let’s see if we can find one or two. Step 1: Look only at races where every horse has had at least five starts. Step 2: Eliminate any horse with a winning strike rate (W%) of less than 20. Step 3: Eliminate any horse that has raced this time in and finished more than three lengths from the winner last start. If the horse is first up and hasn’t won fresh, eliminate it. Step 4: Eliminate any who have had three or more starts at the track without winning. Step 5: Eliminate any who have had three or more starts over the trip without winning. Step 6: Eliminate any horse that has to carry more than three kilos above what it carried last start, unless it won that race. Step 7: If you have more than one qualifier, take the one that is the highest price on the fields page. Step 8: If you still have more than one, take the horse in the best barrier. Back it each way.

Flemington Tuesday race 3 no.11 In-and-out sort of mare that might be ready to put in another cheeky effort in the greys’ race. She was third in this event 12 months ago and comes here off a better run at Sale last week, where she closed in a racefastest 11.67 for her ﬁnal 200m.

MINSK MOMENT Flemington Tuesday race 8 no. 6 Was a class above his rivals when recording a dominant win at Geelong on its cup program last start. He came clear late with a neat last 200m in 11.79, clocking the 10th-fastest last 600m (33.85) for the meeting.

PAUL’S REGRET Flemington Tuesday race 9 no.6 This honest mare sat handier and held on well for fourth in the Tristarc Stakes last start. She was backing up quickly from her “hidden” good run a week earlier, when she produced the fastest last 400m and 200m of the meeting despite running 10th.

RAZETA Randwick Tuesday race 4 no. 15 Was stepping up from 1100m to 1400m second up at Randwick a fortnight ago and didn’t get many favours, running into several traffic jams. Her last 600m (36.78) and 200m (12.99) sectionals were good considering she couldn’t build momentum.

Eagle Farm Tuesday race 7 no. 12 Caught in a pocket rounding the turn and unable to fully build momentum as soon as the winner was, she ran on strongly once clear. With even luck, she likely would have won the race.

Randwick Tuesday race 6 no. 4 Reeled off the third-fastest last 600m (35.50) of the Big Dance Wildcard, running on from too far back. He missed a run in the Big Dance, but the Little Dance looks a good consolation target.

Kembla Tuesday race 5 no. 4 This Savabeel gelding found 1150m a bit short on debut on the Kenso track in late June. His two trials back have been sound enough for a horse that will appreciate getting over further.

Eagle Farm Tuesday race 2 no. 3 A horse with plenty of ability. He was never catching the winner (who’d pinched a big break) on the Gold Coast last start, but ate into the margin considerably. He ran really well from a hopeless spot in a strong twoyear-old race in the winter.

Flemington Tuesday race 1 no.3 This Fastnet Rock colt from the James Cummings stable had a synthetic-track trial in Sydney, where he ﬁnished alongside last week’s Randwick runner-up Coincide. He then came south and got close to debut Flemington winner and stablemate Zulﬁqar in a jumpout there last week.

Randwick Tuesday race 5 no. 14 The race was not run to suit him last time, with evnetual winner Hosier controlling the tempo and kicking too well. This Jan Bowen-trained gelding turned in another very good performance, however, closing in a race-best last 600m (35.70) and 200m (12.20).

And an Aussie-bred Caulfield Cup winner is a warm favourite to win the Melbourne Cup. Welcome to Melbourne Cup day 2021. It seems like another world, apart from the flooding. Incentivise, who was as short as $2.30 when this edition went to press last year, would end up starting at $2.90, pipping So You Think ($3, 2010) for shortest-priced Melbourne Cup favourite this century. Indeed he was the shortest since another

Caulfield Cup winner, Gay Icarus, started at 7/4 ($2.75) in 1971. Perhaps the easing of Incentivise came about when punters remembered that both Gay Icarus and So You Think got rolled, and that no horse had completed the CaulfieldMelbourne Cup double since Ethereal in 2001. Despite having copped a low-end penalty (1.5kg) for one of the easier Caulfield Cup wins of modern times, Incentivise couldn’t get it done either. He ran bravely but was no match for Verry Elleegant ($18), recording the 10th of her 11 Group 1 wins. One reason Incentivise was such a skinny price was a lack of international wildcards for punters to ponder. Whether it was the lingering pandemic or Racing Victoria’s new veterinary requirements, only Spanish Mission ($10, third) and Sir Lucan ($26, 14th) tackled the race sight unseen. (Twilight Payment came out of the Irish St Leger, but was a known quantity.) This year, normal service has been restored. We can forget the Caulfield Cup winner, and just worry about the first two favourites (and

With German stayer Loft falling foul of the CT police, most attention is focused on the English raider Deauville Legend, who could start as the shortest favourite (bar Incentivise) since So You Think. Deauville Legend is a northern-hemisphere three-year-old, a category with a healthy strike rate given that this is usually a 24-horse ﬁeld. As our chart on page 58 shows, the record of that age group in the Melbourne Cup is 11: 2-1-1. The two winners were Rekindling in 2017 and Cross Counter in 2018. A query on Deauville Legend might be that they had 51.5kg and 51kg respectively, while he has 55kg. Mind you, the topweights in those races were dual Group 1 winner Hartnell and Best Solution, who’d won two German Group 1s and had just carried 57.5kg to victory in the Caulﬁeld Cup. The topweight this Tuesday is Gold Trip, whose only win came in a Group 2 for three-year-olds in June 2020.

DECENT RAINE (Flemington Race 9 no.10) Steps up to 1400m after a narrow second over 1200m second up. She won over this route in January, and at her next two runs over the trip she finished close up in fillies’ group company. Her two runs this time in have been very good. ROOTS (Flemington Race 9 no.19) In-form mare who won her first two in Sydney this time in, then came to Melbourne and just failed to run down My Whisper over 1600m at The Valley. Back to 1400m, she looks a strong chance again.

Bart’s “other” grandson has been hogging the headlines thoughout the spring carnival but older brother Edward Cummings has a great chance to claim the spotlight on racing’s biggest day. While James (33), has kept racking up the feature victories, 35-year-old Edward has been displaying Bart Cummingslike patience with his stable star Duais as he has had his sights on the one goal — the $8 million Melbourne Cup. There’s a bit of old Bart’s tactics in the way Edward has gone about it, too. The late Bart Cummings prepared 12 Cup winners and in the early days he had a “10,000 rule” ... his horses had to have at least 10,000 metres of racing in their legs before that ﬁrst Tuesday in November. Duais is on 9,400 metres if you include two trials — close enough to Bart’s old rule, for me at least. While the multiple group 1-winning mare hasn’t managed a placing in her four spring runs to date, she hasn’t run a bad race in any of them, either. Coming off an outstandiing

autumn, during which she won the Australian Cup at Flemington, Duais resumed at Caulfield in August over an unsuitable 1400 metres. It was a decent enough return, with the fiveyear-old running on fairly from last. Second up she finished within five lengths of Anamoe in the 1600-metre Geroge Main Stakes at rain-soaked Randwick. Two starts back she carried a hefty 57kg in the Turnbull Stakes (2000m) under special-weight conditions and, ridden closer to the pace this time, did very well to finish within three lengths of the winner (Smokin’ Romans). At her most recent outing, in the Caulfield Cup (2400m), Duais returned to her more familiar racing pattern (settling back in the field) and, after travelling wide on the turn, ran home strongly in the straight to get within a length and a half of the winner, Durston, on the line. Duais is a daughter of 2013 Cox Plate winner Shamus Award who, despite being a son of the speed sire Snitzel, has already proved himself a very good sire of staying horses. Lightly raced visitor Deauville Legend is taking the right form into

the Cup and is clearly among the top contenders. Impressive in all ﬁve starts in England this year, the four-year-old has had a very similar preparation to that which yielded the 2018 Melbourne Cup for Cross Counter. Like Cross Counter, Deauville Legend is a northern-hemisphere three-year-old taking on our Cup at just his eighth start. At his most

Heading The Babe, the rain, the lake It’s been a wet old month or two in south-eastern Australia, but veterans of the spring carnivals of the 1970s have seen it all before — and more.

SHANE N TEMPLETON So it’s 1976 and we don’t have numerical track ratings — just fast, good, slow and heavy. It’s the second year of colour TV and to date Victorians have seen only the blue and white of North Melbourne and the brown and gold of Hawthorn in VFL Grand Finals. Nobody is talking about climate change. La Nina, as far as I know, is Spanish for “the girl”. What we do know is that in Melbourne, generally October is the wettest month. Recent years have not been short of reminders. The 1973 Caulﬁeld Cup is run in rain on a bog. It’s not as bad for the ’74 Caulﬁeld Cup but still heavy. In 1975, it’s so wet and muddy on Cox Plate day that the races are probably saved by the appearance of Princess Margaret. They are abandoned as soon as the Plate is run. Of course late October runs into early November. The 1975 Melbourne Cup is run on

very heavy going with visibility also an issue. In 1976 the Caulfield Cup is seriously heavy again with New Zealand-bred mudlarks How Now, Battle Heights and Van Der Hum filling the placings. New Zealand’s teenage riding prodigy Brent Thomson is aboard Van Der Hum in that race. His first experience as a jockey in Australia is his winning ride on Fury’s Order in the previous year’s Cox Plate. “Conditions were very tough that (Caulfield Cup) day. Most of the riders discarded the goggles before the winning post the first time. “I remember after the race doctors and medics helping clean out some of the jockeys’ eyes.” Brent won’t be riding Van Der Hum in the 1976 Melbourne Cup though. He is committed to Fury’s Order’s stablemate, the mare Kythera. She, like Van Der Hum, is by the noted side of wet-trackers Hermes. But, unlike Van Der Hum, she prefers good-to-softish tracks. So Brent is one of many pleased participants when Melbourne’s weather takes a surprising turn in the lead-up to the first Tuesday in November. For several days it is downright hot. YOURSAY Rausing reception Kirsten Rausing is the owner/breeder of Alpinista, winner of the recent Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. She also bred Durston, who won the Caulﬁeld Cup but was scratched from the Melbourne Cup after failing a compulsory CT scan. Rausing recently questioned the Group 1 status of the Melbourne Cup, because it is a handicap. In Europe and Britain, handicap races cannot be group races. Group 1, 2 and 3 races are strictly weightfor-age or set-weights races. In her opinion, the Melbourne Cup is not one of the world’s great races when compared with the world’s foremost weight-for-age group races.

Task completed, I survey the ruination of the new suit, then, already resigned to it, watch the mudeater Van Der Hum win the 1976 Melbourne Cup. Gold And Black finishes second. He will beat Reckless in a classic Cup the following year. Kythera, when she finally gets wound up, finishes very strongly to run third. “It was a nightmare race to ride in,” Brent recalls. “Particularly if you were on a horse who has to be ridden back. The goggles are off early again, you’re getting most of the backwash. And it was just so dark as well.” To this day, you can sense that Brent still harbours the disappointment of that race not being run about midday. There are many who know how you feel, Babe.

All I can suggest, Charlie, is that these “experts” are paid to talk, to ﬁll space and to create interest, so they do. A lot of it is what I call locker-room jock gibberish, bordering on the inane at times. But the good news is we have Winning Post, with its great coverage, insights and information which allows us to, ultimately, make our own decisions in our own time. New blood needed Year after year, half-decent European stayers demonstrate that they are superior to the home-grown variety. It is pretty clear that domestic breeders have to lift their game if they are to be competitive in our quality, high-value, staying races. LIfting their game means importing proven entires and stallions from that part of the world to improve the quality of our breeding stock. The 40/1 shot runs down the favourite, Magnifique, and the popular Gunsynd. Trinder had trained Piping Lane in Tasmania but sent him over to George Hanlon to add the final touches. ● After the races, jumps jockey Michael Laurence is driving past the track when he notices an elderly couple trying to hail a cab. Laurence recognises the gentleman and pulls over to offer them a lift. Cup-winning owner Ray Trinder, with the trophy safely in his hands, accepts the gracious offer and is driven to town to continue the celebrations.
