Amy on a roll with ‘cheeky’ Pokerjack Goulburn gelding Pokerjack enhanced his pin-up-boy status for apprentice Amy McLucas when they combined to win last Saturday’s Class 3 TAB Highway Handicap (1200m). The Tash Burleigh-trained five-year-old gave McLucas her first metro win when he took a Class 2 Highway at Randwick in August, and now he’s given her a second. After racing just off the pace, McLucas sent Pokerjack to the lead at the 200-metre mark. The gelding then defied the challenge of The Dramatist to score by three-quarters of a length with backmarker Sir Ravanelli finishing strongly to claim third place. Despite Pokerjack’s Highway success three starts earlier he was pretty much ignored by punters, starting at $20 after opening at $26. “It’s an unexplainable feeling and everything you work for,” McLucas said. “It takes a while to get there but when you get there it’s great. “He’s a cheeky little thing. I was hoping he’d settle midfield or worse — that’s how he won the Highway a few starts ago — but he made it hard work today. “I did the best I could to work with him. He was just all there at the top of the straight and I knew we had it.”
Arrow on target Another apprentice over the moon at Rosehill was three-kilo claimer Zac Lloyd, after taking the $500,000 Four Pillars Midway on the Kristen Buchanan-trained Oakfield Arrow. The Wyong mare scored by a half-length over Awesome Lad with Lemaire a further length and a quarter away in third place. “It’s absolutely surreal,” Lloyd said. “Thank you very much, Ms Buchanan, for this ride. “It’s a half-million-dollar race. You don’t get these every day so I’m just thankful for the opportunity. “It all panned out nicely. I didn’t want to be too far back in the big field. I was more than happy to be three deep with cover, which I was, and got into a lovely rhythm throughout. “She picked up very quickly and maybe hit the front a bit too soon but there was still a bit left in the tank, which was good.” The win capped a great day for Lloyd, son of former leading jockey Jeff Lloyd, as he’d earlier ridden his first Saturday metropolitan winner aboard Mars Mission for the Hawkes stable.
Around the traps The cross-border raiders got the cash at Wagga last Friday when the Stan Sadleir Stakes went to $24 outsider Banger, trained at Wodonga by Craig Widdison and ridden by apprentice Hannah Williams. The winner scored by a long head from the favourite, Swagger, with Galaxy Fox a further half-length away in third place. The punters had got off to the right start when the 2500-metre Mountaineer Cup,

Amy McLucas returns on Pokerjack. a heat of the Wagga Stayers Series, went to odds-on favourite Leather Jacket Lew, trained at Goulburn by Danielle Seib and ridden by Quayde Krogh. The winner never looked like losing, romping away to record a three-length win over Hilltop Hood with Will To Excel a neck away in third spot. The 1600-metre Bragger Cup went to the Mitchell Beer-trained Old Gregg, ridden by Nick Souquet. The winner scored by a head from Crocodile Cod with Marcee third. Widdison and Seib both trained doubles while apprentice Williams rode a double. At Coonamble the same afternoon, Sue Grills trained two winners while Clayton Gallagher rode a double. The leading riders on Saturday at Newcastle were Mitchell Bell with a treble and Aaron Bullock with a double. At Quirindi, Newcastle trainer Kris Lees and apprentice Shayleigh Ingelse combined to win two races. On the same afternoon, on a 10-race program at Dubbo, Ben Looker rode four winners while local trainer Clint Lundholm landed a treble. In the 1400-metre Picnic Championship Final, the Connie Greig-trained Hemsted ($5.50), ridden by Leandro Ribeiro, recorded a 1½-length win over Danspur, with the winner’s stablemate Brooklyn Star a close-up third. Greig had six runners in the 10-horse field. Sunday saw the trend of big city stables dominating rich country cups continue as the $200,000 Goulburn Gold Cup (1400m) went to the Chris Waller-trained Oscar Zulu ($4.40). The winner scored by a length from Joe Pride-trained favourite Coal Crusher with a further 4¼ lengths to the Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou-trained Flying Crazy. Fourth and fifth also came from large metro yards. Oscar Zulu was ridden by William Pike, who took riding honours at the Goulburn meeting with a winning treble.

Lady of the Grange Racing remains in mourning for trainer Gwenda Markwell, who passed away last week after a year-long battle with cancer. She was 61. Based at Kembla Grange, Markwell was the champion local trainer on no fewer than 19 occasions. At one meeting at the Grange, she saddled up six winners on a seven-race program, a feat which remains a record for provincial tracks. All up she trained 1037 winners, 517 of them at Kembla Grange. “Gwenda was an outstanding and passionate horsewoman. She won some of our biggest races including the Australian Derby but was the ultimate quiet achiever,” said Racing NSW CEO Peter V’landys. “Gwenda leaves a huge void obviously at her beloved Kembla Grange and will be sorely missed. “We send our sincere condolences to her family and friends.” Group 1-winning jockey Kathy O’Hara, formerly Markwell’s star apprentice, also paid tribute. “Heartbreaking to hear of Gwenda’s passing,” O’Hara tweeted. “She was a great boss and mentor to me as an apprentice. We shared many winners and memories together. The racing family will miss Gwenda’s reign at Kembla.”
Coming attractions Looking ahead, this Friday is cup day at Kempsey, with the Akubra Kempsey Cup to be run over 1450 metres. At Wyong on Saturday, the feature race will be heat one of the Summer Provincial Series, a Class 5 Plate over 1350 metres. At Warren on Sunday, the main races will be the 1600-metre Cotton Cup and the 1200-metre Warren Jockey Club Sprint, while at Armidale the same afternoon, the 1400-metre Guyra Cup is set down for decision.
