Apprentice Ben Price staked his claim as a contender for the Adelaide jockeys’ premiership when he landed a treble at Morphettville last Saturday. Price started his winning streak when Whitchety Grub ($9) took out the 2500-metre benchmark 68 for Port Lincoln trainer Mick White. Price brought up the middle pin of his treble when Disco Tilmorn ($5.50) won an 1100-metre special-conditions handicap for Darryl Dodson of Telopea Downs. Price rode his third winner when the four-year-old Philonize ($3.30) led all the way first up in the benchmark 82 over 1100 metres for Strathalbyn’s Dion Koch. Philonize won three straight last spring and both Price and Koch believe the four-year-old Reward For Effort mare has a bright future.
A cup for Cahill On a good day for Strathalbyn stables, the Shayne Cahill-prepared Morty ($11) took out the day’s feature, the listed John Letts Cup over 1800 metres. Morty, passed in at $10,000 at the 2019 Adelaide Magic Millions yearling sale and later purchased by Cahill for just $1600, now has six wins from 24 starts for $231,220 in earnings. Morty came from midfield to complete a double for jockey Jake Toeroek. It was the second stakes win as a trainer for dual licence-holder Cahill, whose first came with Burn Off in the listed Hill Smith Stakes over the same course in 2018. Toeroek had landed the first leg of his double when the Richard and Chantelle Jolly-prepared Lady Simone ($7.50) came from one off the pace to take the 1200-metre benchmark 64.
Two for Lachy Apprentice Lachlan Neindorf was the other jockey to notch a double on the 10-race card, kicking off with $2.90 favourite Zufasta in the 1100-metre three-year-old for Gordon Richards and Damien Moyle. Neindorf landed his second winner when Residue ($4.60) won the 1600-metre benchmark 70 for Murray Bridge’s Mick Huxtable.
Murphy lays down law Local trainer Sue Murphy and jockey Dom Tourneur pleased the punters at Naracoorte last Sunday with a treble and a double respectively. Murphy won with Hi Smokey ($3.20 favourite), Hasta La Missile ($1.85 favourite) and Hasta Fiorente ($2.50 favourite). Sairyn Fawke rode Hi Smokey while Tourneur scored on the other two.
Day-ly double Followers of Murray Bridge’s Roslyn Day were rewarded at Morphettville’s Melbourne Cup day meeting with two winners at decent prices, both ridden by Callan Murray. The pair scored with Fleurieu Flipper ($8.50) in the 1200-metre maiden plate and Jean Valjean ($6.50) in a benchmark 58 over 1100 metres. Barend Vorster was the other jockey to notch a double, winning on the Gary and Dean Alexander-trained Playboy Charlie ($3 favourite) in the 2008-metre maiden plate and Sabermetric in the Class 1 over 1050 metres for Gordon Richards and Damien Moyle. Local trainer Ryan Balfour shared the honours with Day, scoring with Decibelles ($21) in the 1600-metre maiden and Konh ($2.60 favourite) in a 1200-metre Class 2. The winning riders were Dylan Caboche and apprentice Alana Livesey.
