TIM EGAN Amy has an affi nity with the Highway
Emerging apprentice Amy McLucas is making a habit of winning TAB Highway Handicaps.
Last Saturday she recorded her fi fth win in the series in the space of six months when she piloted the Canberra galloper Trooper Knuckle to victory for trainer Keith Dryden.
McLucas elected to stay on the fence after drawing barrier six and rode for luck. She found the gaps at the right time, charging through late to hit the front and hold off a late challenge from Mr. Severino.
Dryden praised the ride of McLucas and added that he may have to change plans for the fi ve-year-old as a result of the win.
“I was originally going to spell him but he might go on to the Bega Cup (a qualifi er for the $2 million Big Dance) on January 29,” the trainer said.
Clean sweep
The two races run at the Gold Coast Magic Millions meeting last Saturday were won by NSW trainers.
Tamworth’s Cody Morgan was fi rst into the winners circle after taking out the $500,000 Country Cup with Ezekeil, ridden by Jamie Kah.
The four-year-old started favourite and never looked in danger of defeat, beating Situation Room by almost four lengths.
The following race, the $500,000 2YO Plate (900 metres), was taken out by the Newcastle youngster Rush Hour, trained by Nathan Doyle and ridden by Koby Jennings. The winner scored by a half length from favourite Getty.
Doyle landed another winner later in the afternoon when Dalaalaat, ridden by apprentice Dylan Gibbons, claimed the 1200-metre Midway Handicap at Rosehill. After settling his mount back in the fi eld, Gibbons found a gap at the right time and dashed through to win easily from Super Bright and Riverbrook.
Two races later, Banju, trained at Scone by Lyle Chandler, made it back-toback wins in taking out the 1500-metre Benchmark 78.
In a tight fi nish, Banju, ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, just got the better of Major Artie to win by a half neck.

Power Point
At Ballina last Friday, the 1600-metre Ballina Cup was won by the Stirling Osland-trained Point Counterpoint, ridden by Brooke Stower.
The winner scored by nearly a length from the favourite, Spangler.
Apprentice Emily Lang fared best of the jockeys, riding a winning double.
On Saturday at Kembla Grange, jockeys Lee Magorrian and Jamie Powell both rode doubles.
At Tuncurry, Daryl McLellan rode two winners for Kris Lees while at the Tumut non-TAB meeting, trainer Craig Weeding and apprentice Fiona Sandkhul combined to land a double.
Fast Fox
At Nowra last week, Heat 13 of the Rising Stars series for apprentice jockeys was won by Damon Budler aboard the Gratz Vellatrained Vella Fox.
In a daring move, Budler took off 500 metres out, going from last place to lead the six-horse fi eld. Once in front, Vella Fox maintained momentum to win from Arterios.
Following that heat, Jasper Franklin maintained his series lead with 23 points, three ahead of Dylan Gibbons on 20 with Shayleigh Ingelse and Molly Bourke sharing third place on 19. Budler’s win took his points tally to nine.
Apprentice wins Japan Cup
At Orange on Sunday, the two main races were the 1280-metre Japan Cup and the 1600-metre Cowra Cup. In an exciting fi nish to the Japan Cup, the Dean Mirfi ntrained, Whatsin, ridden by apprentice Jamie Powell defeated the favourite, Larynx by a neck. In the Cowra Cup, the Mick Mulhollandtrained Sea Of Flames, ridden by apprentice Jake Barrett, scored a half-length win over Milamoo.
