ELEMENTS OF WELLNESS
Fall 2023 Location: Austin, Texas Studio: Academic – Core Studio III Square Footage: 173,568 FT2 In Collaboration With Taylor Wordell Buildner Competition Submission - Beyond Isolation: Senior Housing
Elements of Wellness is an innovative senior living community that not only enrich the lives of residents across the seven dimensions of wellness: physical, social, emotional, educational, intellectual, spiritual, and environmental, but also integrates seamlessly within the vibrant fabric of Austin’s social landscape. Recognizing the importance of communal spaces in this city, the design concept extends beyond conventional boundaries. The core architectural philosophy is the belief that visual connection transcends mere design; it embodies the human innate desire to belong, observe, and connect. The project aspires to redefine conventional designs by seamlessly embedding assistive technologies into the architectural design harmonizing aesthetics with functionality to foster inclusivity and a shared sense of belonging. Within the senior community, residents will find a blend of spaces meticulously designed not just to address the needs of seniors but to promote each dimensions of wellness. The design intervention seeks to break down the barriers of physical isolation, fostering a sense of communal living and encouraging meaningful interactions among residents.

Thresh-ohld (noun) A separation, connection, or transitional element located between spaces. Any place or point of entering or beginning. Nestled within the Lever House on 390 Park Avenue, New York, Thresholds is an artist residency designed for painters, dancers, and chefs. It’s a vibrant hub where creativity knows no bounds. The interior design of the residency was driven by the concept of interiority, emphasizing how people’s perceptions, interactions, and spatial occupation contribute to the built environment. Thresholds embodies a celebration of the word itself—where architectural elements define boundaries, transitions, and connections within spaces. It’s a place where subtle spatial shifts, interconnected openings across floors, and the choice of material all play a role in the spatial journey through the residency. Within the residency, each floor houses two to three domestic units, accommodating three residents per unit. The public program of the residency features dedicated studio spaces, each tailored to the specifics needs of the disciplines. In addition, facilities such as a library, communal dining area, and a study room provide a holistic environment.

DUALITY
Fall 2022 Location: Austin, Texas Studio: Academic – Core Studio I Square Footage: 2,652 FT2 Fall 2022 Design Excellence Award Nominee
Du·al·i·ty (noun) The quality or state of having two different or opposite parts or elements. Located at the University of Texas at Austin, School of Architecture, Duality is a sculpted monolithic structure designed for the idea of multifunctionality in the Mebane Gallery. The structure is intended to replace the current movable partitions used to create three independent spaces, providing extra flexibility and multiple options for student lounging, collaboration, reviews, and more. Designed to provide interactive experiences accommodating a range of functions, the structure provides bar heights, tabletops, seating, chair storage, signage, and an overlook. Duality is a design based on the idea of orthogonal vs non-orthogonal elements. Anything that serves a function is orthogonal, creating a juxtaposition with the sculptural nature of the non-orthogonal surfaces. Flexibility is given to the user as they approach the structure to decide whether they would like to engage or detach with the environment around them. A multitude of chair configurations can be tailored to the diverse needs of each user.

GEOMORPH
Fall 2022 Studio: Academic – Mediating Interiors
Geomorph explores the relationship between form, surface, and space in the interior. Relationship of form and space, although deceptively simple, can be the beginning of a richer, more complex understanding of what it means to design, shape, and form space for human interaction and perception. As an exploratory project, Geomorph begins with figure ground exercises to establish basic understanding of relations between the objects and the surrounding field. To create the initial eight compositions, conditions such as contiguous, shifting, overlapping, separating, and center-edge relation were explored. From the initial eight compositions the project expands into dynamic patterns. The dynamic patterns were developed in two parts, orthogonal and nonorthogonal patterns both using three of the previous compositions. After exploring in 2D the spatial compositions move into the 3D realm focusing on models, renders, and drawings to help inform the findings.

VERIZON TECHNOLOGY & POLICY CENTER
Fall 2019 Location: Washington, Virginia Studio: Hyperquake Square Footage: 3,132 FT2
Verizon Technology & Policy Center underwent a transformation to shift the focus of the center from present-day Internet of Things to a more aspirational and innovative space with 5G possibilities, as 5G is the next generation technology standard for networks. The majority of the TPC floor plan remained the same along with the journey. As the content and stories get a refresh the approach is to be minimally striking and elegantly understated all the while being mindful of the brand. The design leverages large scale black and white scenic photographic murals with dimensional frames, standing off the wall, housing displays enabling the flexibility to interchange and curate specific content when needed.

DESTINATION UPFITTERS
Spring 2021 Location: South Jordan, Utah Studio: Jerry Seiner Dealerships Square Footage: 4,350 FT2
Destination Upfitters in South Jordan, is Utah’s newest outdoor vehicle accessory and upfitting shop that caters to all makes and models for universal accessibility. The brand went from a mere idea to a functional company and retail store. From identity to collateral, and its retail space, all aspects were designed from the ground up. Combined, the mountains and tires in the logo symbolize the journey or adventure that is about to be embarked on while subtly acknowledging its Utah roots and the automotive side of the brand. Approaching the design for the retail space was simple. The three upfitted vehicles would take center stage in the showroom while the rest of the space would be filled with products and demos. Large-scale scenic photographs surrounded the space as inspiration for any customer that comes through. Signage throughout the space highlights the four product categories offered by the brand, and is depicted as icons on the front of the building.

THE WORDMARK The wordmark was created with the intention of using the letter “A” in destination to hint at the icon. The “A” not only represents the mountain, but also a compass always pointing north or an upward motion.

UTAH JAZZ
Spring 2018 Location: Salt Lake City, Utah Site: Vivint Smart Home Arena Studio: Infinite Scale
Vivint Smart Home Arena, home to the NBA Utah Jazz, underwent a multi-year renovation project. Upon completion, there was a need for brand activations, history treatments, and programming. A phased master plan was developed and the design approach was to create a one-of-a-kind venue experience that captures not only the essence of the Jazz franchise, but also the city and its fans. These first phase installations were completed in the general admission, club, and player-only areas. *Due to confidentiality, only a small sample of this project can be shown and shared.
