Once famously crowded with bicycles, the rapidly growing city of Beijing has since built infrastructure that prioritizes motor vehicles to suit its rising middle class. Bicycle ridership has seen a sharp 78% decline since the 1980s.

Today the city has begun to impose limits and control over vehicular use as w,ell as increased its public transportation capacity. However, despite severe problems such as hazardous levels of air pollution and impenetrable infrastructure, the real obstacle against reviving the bicycle as a major means of city transportation is a cultural one.

Population density of Beijing is very low compared to other major cities, showing a high commuter base that overloads the roads and trains system. With an overflowing daily influx of people, the infrastructure is unsustainable.

At the urban scale, we proposed a city-wide network of bicycle routes and supporting infrastructure while also introducing a centralized bicycle hub south of the CBD, as well as Sub-hubs that work with existing public transportation. We are interested in the human scale of the bicycle itself, its soft interventions and successfully adopting it as a fetishized object of individuality in response to contemporary Chinese culture.

Overcoming the current barriers of Beijing’s current vehicular infrastructure necessitates a re-planning of streets into a network of bike ways for fast, safe and enjoyable commute. Introducing new bicycle infrastructure and soft interventions serve to revisit the opportunities presented by the bicycle beyond its functional value, recognizing the cultural potential of re branding it to appeal to the new Chinese generation. We hope that this map will inspire and empower more cyclists in Beijing. To start with, we identified six major districts within greater Beijing that already houses a high and steady base of cyclists but lacking in infrastructure, such as the university district and the CBD district below, as well as the Olympic Park district, CBD, Tongzhou, and the historic city center.

The local routes are designed for slow speeds and short commutes, accommodating crosswalks and interruptions along the way. A rider can easily hop on and off a local route that is designated and protected from the vehicular mess in Beijing.

The University District in Beijing is home to two of the largest and most renowned institutions in China- Beijing University and Tsinghua University, among many others. The Wudaokou subway station that serves the area is particularly notorious for its high degree of human concentration during the peak hours. Here where ridership is very high, infrastructural support in its most basic form like parking is notably lacking, making it a perfect location for a Sub-hub.

The sub-hub consists of armatures next to and above the station where there had previously been car parks and inaccessible green space. This diverts pedestrian entrances from under the station to its wings, while enabling bicycles to ride through and up on to the platforms, where new train cars added on the heads are cycle accessible.

CBD DISTRICT & MAIN CYCLE HUB Tonghui River as a divide between the CBD to the north and the rail yard to the south.

To Tongzhou

The CBD district of Beijing is easily the busiest and the fastest growing sector of city, with an approved SOM eastern expansion plan ready down the road. The two main subway stops (Dawang Stn and Guomao Stn) are packed with daily commuters, visitors and shoppers with number of riderships (roughly 350,000) reaching 10 times that of the Yankee Stadium ridership on game days. In the attempt to alleviate the congestion, the SOM east CBD expansion plan features a green loop for alternative transport systems, which connects to the older proposed green loop in western CBD. Our proposal taps into that linkage, and seeks to extend that loop across the much neglected Tonghui River into the under utilized train test track facility that occupies prime CBD riverfront real estate.

The green loop extension lends linkages to an area rich of new art and commercial activities that was previously impervious to physical connections. 1. The 1 mile long existing train car storage shed is recycled somewhat in line with the aesthetics of the familiar 798 arts village, to form the platform for the cyclists revolution physically and socially.

2. A private market reaction of low to mid rise developments starting from the water’s edge creates an edge with atmospheres similar to that of Sanlitun Village, while providing the CBD with a solid base of housing supply to promote live-work environment and minimize the commuter base.

Beyond the hard infrastructural redevelopments along Tonghui North River Rd, soft interventions in parking spaces offer flexible installations that can be configured into various versions of parklets from retail to bike share stations. These transient fixtures are easily deployable all over the city to further hone down a bicycle revolution.

Project was made possible In partnership with Neighbor Works New Horizons of New Haven, an organization committed to develop and operate affordable quality housing, and HTP Ventures LLC, a private equity firm interested in mass producing micro dwelling units.

The O-blong house aims to present a prototype for a small 300/600 square foot home that optimizes the lot through lateral segmentation. The house can expand through the addition of o-blong gable volumes, and outdoor platforms that also serves as sequential layers of the house.

Floor Plan. House is laid out as a single plane of successions and interlinked volumes that also acts as spatial layers of privacy.

Backyard to front porch; the offsetting of the volume allows the house to extend beyond its physical boundary, making it seem larger than it appears. Independent gable roofs within a single enveloping gesture grant identities for both tenant and owner when tenant space is rented out, while maintaining a cohesive character when tenant space is absorbed into the main house.

The house within a garden concept allows us to make the house almost translucent, blending interior and exterior spaces to expand the inhabited space. Set back from the street to create a front communal patio, the form of the house references the vernacular of the neighborhood while

softening the rigidity of the gable roof with trellis that wrap around the living spaces, admitting light while providing privacy. Private gardens adjacent and surrounding the house provides an added layer while allowing the interior to expand out.

The house itself is conceived as layers of space that wraps on to itself similar to that of a mobius strip. From the most basic and micro aspect of living- the bedroom, the house extends out into its periphery through discrete framed openings giving the impression of a porous all expansive environment from the inside out.

The house is intentionally single story to accommodate the flexibility of elderly living and handicap accessibility. A single parti wall that separates the tenant space (front) and owner (back) also functions structurally such that it is seamless as a privacy barrier while being flexible for future adaptability in events where family growth warrants more space.

The new PennDesign School explores the Interdisciplinary aspect of our pedagogy. Architecture is ultimately not insular, and instead is an amalgamation of different fields ranging from sociology to material science, to ecological sciences, surmounting to its

potential to influence fields beyond itself. The new building therefore takes form of an knot between the three strands of design facilitating interdisciplinary interaction- Atelier, Confluence and Fabrication.

Situated at the cornerstone of University of Pennsylvania’s Blanche Levy quadrangle along the historic woodland walk that links the campus to the Amtrak station, it was critical to address the different strands of public the new school facilitates, and as such different entry points into the building. The building primarily focuses on the convergence of these different strands: students, general academic public and the public in general, which is expressed in the porosity of the lower floors. The upper floors houses architecture studios and workshops which become part of PennDesign’s identity.

CONFLUENCE

The knot of confluence, atelier and fabrication houses the fundamental principle that architecture as a discipline builds real, physical and tangible space with the aid, exploration and manipulation of materials. As such fabrication tools and studios are nestled and integrated with one another while conference space on the lower level marks the school as a learning field within the larger architecture sphere we operate in, facilitating in interdisciplinary and inter agency learning beyond the boundaries of the university.

Its aesthetics then follows an assembly of parts, where each strand of design is characterized by explicitly different materials- aluminum screens, wood structures, screens and slats atop a textured concrete base, tied up together. Because ultimately, architecture is never solitary, but products of collaborative processes.

As sea level rise, the city of Bridgeport remains to be Connecticut’s front runner for a major flood disaster. The city that had once been home to innovations ranging from Frisbees to the Subway sandwich, is now ridden with poverty and many of the urban problems associated with deindustralized cities (in addition to flooding). Specifically in the south western area of Black Rock, a small collective of Eco related industries has started to thrive with the support of the new Mayor.

Our proposal of a Bridgeport Eco Industrial Park taps into that potential of Black Rock by attracting new industries, businesses, and tourism to Connecticut’s largest community of industrial symbiosis. Rising flood insurance premiums and water level will eventually force existing industries to self berm. Instead we propose a collective berm that will not only cost significantly less, but will also protect the whole zone, while having surplus for the improvement of the park.

In the Eco park, the byproduct of one industry becomes in the input of another creating an orchestrated loop of waste products. Taking advantage of the proximity of existing industries (0.5 miles radius), the symbiotic exchange is organized around 2 loops, anchored around Wheelabrator waste management, and Bridgeport’s own waste water treatment plant.

Aquaculture School Offers accelerated programs from college-prep through advanced-placement level courses in marine, environmental sciences, and related technologies. State of the art labs open in partnership with Bridgeport University and University of Connecticut and various HS.

Water Pollution Control Authority Treats waste water into clean water before discharge back into Cedar Creek. Wine-making is a culture of inherent dualities. Historically, wine can be an essential part of people’s daily diet, or can be an luxury item solely produced for pleasure and symbol of wealth. Wine is produced locally. At the same time it is an important item for trade throughout history since its invention. The making of a bottle of wine involves both delicate human handcraft, and advancement in technology or machinery.INTERSTITIAL SPACE PROGRAM

Wine production and consumption traces far back into historical tradition concerning the art of cultivation, fermentation and taste. Specifically for the family run winery Cantina Valpolicella Negrar, viticulture and viniculture is critical in the experience of wine tourism from research, to production, storage and dispatch, to the ultimate enjoyment of wine.

As such, the building is conceived as an aggregation of very many spaces with different designated functions. Each function is hosted by its own “building” structure, dimensioned according to its need. It adopts a heavy, solid, tectonic, traditional construction material, giving the production process inside a sense of history, culture and craft. By giving each function / program designated rooms, each distilled parts of the wine making process from production to consumption are simplified and amplified.

It allows for convenient access from block to 2ND FLOOR block, and becomes a unique space that is soft, fluid versus the blocks that are solid and tectonic. Within the larger volume, activities are filtered into two levels with the ground floor designated for production, leaving all public activities to flow on the upper levels.

Ground Floor: Production

A

The ground floor contains the fundamentals production facility of a winery. Facilities are arranged according to the order of the production process. An elevated catwalk overlooks all the production facilities leads to a hallway of aging barrels and storage wall for bottle aging forms a unique visitors route for an immersive dramatical experience. Separate zones for visitors, production plants, and office staff. Each with at least one separate entrance. Each area has its own designated vertical circulation to floor above.

Second Floor: Public Participation

A

The second floor offers a variety of programs open to the public Tasting room and full service restaurant located on the west side. The walking tour that starts on ground floor catwalk end here, where visitors can enjoy different wine plus food pairings, with a pleasant view out to the surrounding landscape of the valley. A larger public hub including a museum, a vineyard, a library, a classroom and a multi-use area.

The dissolution of Pittsburgh’s steel industry has left the city’s population to shrink acutely while leaving a steady body of elderly residents to age-in-place. Inter generational living is a response to Pittsburgh’s industrial past and budding future under the context of this rust belt phenomenon. Parallel to the HOME competition brief, the proposal seeks to elevate the low-income and aging population of Garfield by promoting a supportive cohabitation and communal environment between the old and young.

Today, local non-profit organizations such as cityLAB, the Penn Avenue Arts Initiative and the BloomfieldGarfield Corporation have been spearheading various initiatives to revive Garfield into an exciting hub for the greater community. The site is located in the midst of these developments, providing ample opportunities for community involvement.

Graphics and renderings of original design

Systems integration involves advancing the design of a building beyond the schematic organizations. Given the free spirited nature of the original design, the biggest challenge was to bring the building up to code, while integrating simplicity in the form of mechanics and structure while maintaining

the integrity of the original design. Another major challenge included ensuring a feasible means of enclosure that exemplified the appearance of initial renderings. This manifested in a lattice work that is tied to the curtain wall. All work was done in Revit.

3. Experimentation on the rigidity of simple planar model making materials- chipboard, rail board and butter boards led to sculptures inspired by the texture and form of icebergs. Testing of assembly began with 1. glue dependent joinery resulting in a rigid object, 2. minimal glue joints, which constructed a flexible structure, and finally 3. the final form joins parts of the assembly through notches, which minimized labor and sealant, while generating a much more complex interconnected form.

The direct alignment of architectural elements on the appeared structure allows for the eye to trace up the church and down as the dome loops back down unifies the church vertically while creating a capped impression.

Bramante - Organism from Concinnitas The corners of Bramante’s Santa Maria della Pace was planned with the onset that space is not a passive residue of the gridded courtyard geometry but as something co active. Lauranna’s Palazzo Ducale resolves the corner condition by creating a formal resolution to the corner volume such that it is singled out and emphasized, despite contesting the larger system.

With the goal of bringing our Indonesian roots to the new culture that has welcomed us for the last decade; what better way to coalesce two very different heritage than the universal medium of coffee.

Lokal Cold Brew was conceived from that merger, collaborating with local microroasters to feature Indonesian single origin beans, whose fabric are also reflected in the different abstracted batik prints on our bottles. In the past year, the Lokal crew has grown significantly having sold more than 1000 bottles within 2 months of launching. Since then, We have doubled our collaborations to include other local businesses and young artists, as well as planning for the launch of E-Commerce and larger accounts such as Whole foods, and Lucky’s in Columbus.

The project was a gut renovation and interior work of an old historic shop house into an oyster bar in downtown Singapore. The challenge lies in balancing maximized seating capacity without impeding over personal space and to achieve spatial flexibility for different dining settings. Alternations to the existing long and narrow asymmetrical structure were highly restricted and discouraged, as such proxemics considerations plays a critical role in establishing the desired level of dining comfort, while maintaining a unified flow that extends from entry and into the restaurant.



This por tfolio ser ves as a small record of my time at Yale School of Architecture, as well as any independent graphic and entrepreneurial interests I’ve had the oppor tunity and pleasure to explore over the past 3 years. Prior to Yale, I attended Carnegie Mellon University majoring in architecture, and minored in physics and business administration. I have worked in New York, Singapore, and Indonesia where I am originally from. Outside of YSoA, I have been playing for the Yale Badminton Team for the last 2 years, and star ted my own cold brew brew coffee company in Columbus, Ohio.
