ACCOUNTING PROFESSIONAL OUTLOOK In southeast Michigan, employers have strong demand for accounting and finance professionals. During 2017 regional employers posted 4,866 accounting and finance related open positions. Despite the recent drop in postings, employer demand remains high over the eight years analyzed. Employment in the field is growing and is expected to continue on this path. Employment in the region is expected to rise by nearly 900 individuals in the coming five years and more if current job postings are filled. Most of these jobs require, or prefer, an individual with a Bachelor's degree but this is an opportunity for students to start their career with a two-year program at a local community college. A degree in accounting or finance can also be a first step toward an MBA which provides even further career growth.

Current workers in finance and accounting typically have a starting salary of over $42,000 per year. This is on par with median family income in the region. With experience, this can grow to nearly $120,000 annually. A very competitive salary. The current workforce is also primarily white and female, which means there is a great opportunity to attract minorities and men into the field to grow the workforce.
