Workforce Overview
LABOR FORCE, EMPLOYMENT, AND UNEMPLOYMENT
Following labor force fluctuations throughout 2021, labor force participation totaled 4,733,417 individuals, a decrease of 129,083 individuals since 2020. Employment is up to 4,497,833 workers in 2021, an increase of 105,500 workers. Both unemployment and the unemployment rate decreased, corresponding with the economic recovery. Unemployment decreased to 235,583 workers, down almost half by 234,583 workers since the high of 470,167 workers recorded in 2020. Similarly, the unemployment rate declined by 4.7 percentage points for a 2021 unemployment rate of 5.0 percent.

CENSUS 2020 LABOR FORCE DEMOGRAPHICS
During 2020, the most recent census year, there were about 4,956,499 individuals in the labor force, meaning they were either working or looking for work, in Michigan. Slightly more than half of the population, or about 5,306,283 individuals (53.2 percent), living in the state were actively working. The highest unemployment rates were seen in those aged 24 years old or younger. Males under the age of 25 face an unemployment rate of 30.6 percent, while females under the age of 25 report an unemployment rate of 25.7 percent. Black or African American job seekers also have a difficult time finding employment, facing an unemployment rate of 12.9 percent.

2020 Census Population
According to data from the most recent Census Bureau 2020 ACS Five Year estimates, the population in Michigan increased by nearly 0.1 percent between 2019 and 2020. During 2020, 9.973,907 people were living in the state. The sex of the populace was split almost evenly, with about 50.8 percent of the population identifying as female, and the other 49.2 percent identifying as male. Majority of the population identified as white (77.6 percent) with the second largest number of individuals identifying as Black or African American (13.6 percent). The state has a strong middle-aged population; 29.8 percent of population was under the age of 25, compared to 37.3 percent aged 25-54.
2021 Current Workforce
In 2021, the workforce had a total of 4,133,655 individuals working in the state of Michigan. A slight majority, 50.7 percent (2,098,411 workers) were male, while 49.3 percent (2,041,777 workers) of the workforce was female. Most workers in the state identified as white, accounting for 76.7 percent of the workforce, while Black or African American workers totaled 12.9 percent of the workforce. Those identifying as having a Hispanic or Latino ethnicity accounted for 4.9 percent. Much of the workforce in Michigan is between the ages of 25 through 54 (63.2 percent), while 23.2 percent of workers are 55 and older.

REGIONAL COMMUTING PATTERNS
According to the most recent OnTheMap data set available from the Census Bureau, during 2019, the state's workforce consisted of 4,125,994 residents. There were 3,997,665 (96.9 percent) residents living and working within the state, while the remaining 128,329 residents (3.1 percent) traveled outside of the state for work. There were 4,066,748 workers employed in the state during 2019. Of those, 69,083 workers (1.7 percent) lived outside of the state's borders and commuted in. From this information, we can see that Michigan is a net exporter of jobs, with more workers leaving the area for employment than inwardly commuting.
