RESTAURANT COOKS, SUPERVISORS & CHEFS RESTAURANT OUTLOOK In southeast Michigan, employers are demanding more workers like line cooks, supervisors of food preparation and serving workers, and chefs and head cooks. Employers posted over 12,000 online ads for restaurant kitchen staff in the past year. Interested in becoming a chef? The Bureau of Labor Statistics identifies training provided through community colleges, technical schools, and culinary art schools as steps to becoming a Chef or Head Cook. Furthermore, chefs typically have at least five or more years of related restaurant work experience before promotion to chef or head cook. Earning a culinary degree in combination with restaurant work experience can pave the way towards becoming a chef.
INCREASING DEMAND AND OPPORTUNITY
While wages in the restaurant industry do begin just above minimum wage, plenty of wage growth does exist. Restaurant workers overall, can expect salaries above $18,000 a year. An experienced line cook can be promoted to a supervisory role, where median hourly earnings are $14.77 ($30,721 annually). Experienced supervisors earn an average of $26.13 per hour, or $54,350 annually. The average executive chef in Michigan earns $21.11 per hour ($43,908 annually). Very skilled and experienced chefs earn $42.12 per hour, or $87,600 annually.
