LEGAL WRITERS AND ANALYSTS WANTED Employer demand for paralegals in Southeast Michigan is down from 2011-2012 levels but still strong. Regional employers posted 630 job ads for these workers in the past year. Despite the recent slight depression in job postings, employment of paralegals is projected to rise steadily over the next 5 years. Future need for these workers is strong. Paralegal jobs require an associate’s degree. The paralegal profession is both a good starting point for those hoping to continue their legal education one day, or take advantage for the opportunities for growth in this occupation. Either trajectory can start with a two-year program at a local community college.

Entry-level wages for paralegals are above a $15 per hour living wage, and median salaries are $49,000 a year, above the regional median family income. Wages for paralegals increase with experience such that experienced paralegals can make as much as $72,000 per year. Women dominate the current paralegal workforce – only 13% of workers are male. Similarly, only 16% of paralegals are minority workers, which means that there is great opportunity to attract minorities and men into the profession.
