This scheme aimed to prospect spacious and ecological friendly middle-size primary school potentials through refined educational theories. In order to respect urban environment, forms and façades are compromised somehow. Apart from that, this scheme overreaches through becoming a communal complex as reward to local neighbourhood. Another key element adopted is Waldorf strategy, an educational method focuses on childrens' mental growth and relationship to the nature.

BA3 Studio Design Work

Chinese real estate development company OCT planned to develop a gross 1.8 million square metres agricultural land to turn it into mixed-use, residential and resort. This is the first task I envolved after graduation, within 3 month limit, a team of 4 graduates and 1 project architect successfully completed the tasks that local government and the client pre-negotiated. However, unfortunately this proposal were not passed due to lack of confidence of future economy.

The first 6 weeks of semester one at master level design course is a sustainable supermarket in suburb area of Liverpool. Aiming to manipulate aging population and urban regeneration issues with sustainability strategies, this two timberframed sheds deliver 3,000 sqm bazaar area and 600 sqm floating communal kitchen space and 4 letable offices, introduced growing area in order to provide vibrant greenery to serve as learning area or resort to local schools and community. The next 6 weeks of semester one is to continue detailing one of three students' projects as a group. So three students team up and choose one out of three individual work to develop during the next 6 weeks. At this level of study, students are required to develop 1:5 to 1:20 detailed section drawings and detailed models. It is our first time to try addressing design work and turing it in to solid, buildable paperwork.

The first project at BA3 first semester is to design inhabitable structure in rural region Buttermere, Lake District. The narrative redefined this project as a sort of intervention of UK current terrorism crisis. Under this circumstance, it is critical to train more agents to address upcoming attacks and extremism crisis. Due to Lake District is popular for hikers, the spy training centre is designed to open its roof for visitors, ground floor used as communal space and basement for individual bedrooms.

However depressing it is now the potential of changing is always there: in 2016 local community successfully held a social event called ‘Canal Festival’ which brought both memories and money back to this district. The potential of developing a food growing supermarket with recreative and cultural purposes will significantly change local landscape views and enrich sustainability for achieving a healthy wellbeing.

The supermarket generates a considerable amount of organic waste everyday, dealing with them will be a big problem. By choosing a 100kW small sized biogas digester, it can not only supply daily heating and lighting requirments of the entire buliding, but selling spare energy to the national grid for extra profit. Moreover, it provides high quality compost which for vagetables means fertilizer. This tpye of solar PV is the most efficient one that allowing sun light pass through so that greenery and market underneath can have sufficient sun light without too much artificial lighting. New Islington Waldorf School Individual work Year 3 2nd semester studio work

This scheme aimed to prospect middle size primary school potentials through educational theories. Researching urban context scouting indicates that the site occupied a part of a park which reduces local attraction and green space. Apart from that this scheme overreaches through becoming communal social building as retribution of local neighbourhood.

19

Local building Study:

Educational method study

New Islington contains both Victorian brick façade and modern mixed facade, bricks dominating situation has never been changed ever since city booming. However, regarding of this and also considering of Waldorf ‘s requirement, laminate timber was chosen to be the structural material in terms of its natural appearance and structural performance.

Transparent and timber pitched roofs are arrayed alternately in order to remain skyline to ensure order and simplicity. Moreover pitched roof offers extra space for plants to grow underneath.

Ruldorf Steiner 1861-1925

Site selection: The site located on the fringe of New Islington next to Ancoats used to be part of a public park serving neighbourhoods with landscape of canals and animals. New school scheme, will likely reduce local attraction and block garden view, hence a radical idea emerges that transfer the school to a urban farm during after school time and reopen to public, its function will be more than it is for.

20

Waldorf, name of a educational method, initially occurred in Rudolf Steiner’s essay published in <Education of children> in 1907, inspired by numerous of philosophers’ theories and religions. He established “the three stages of education”to split pre-adult into three parts, in his essay, indicated curriculum planning and several hardware requirement including size of classrooms, wall colours and ritual activities. This elementary school is designed based on his theory but somehow transferred in terms of site circumstance.

Ruldorf Steiner's method focusing on children’s mental growth. Aimed to assist their growth by interacting with natural environment, insomuch some Waldorf schools are directly built surrounded by farms or forests. Therefore creating a urban rural space for children becomes fundamental and significant. Moreover, in terms of his particular insists of classrooms’ property of components, such as sizes and shapes.

structure strategy

The inspiration of constructing this courtyard with corridors around was from Japanese Jinjia (Shinto temple), which usually choose mortise and tenon joint for connection spots. However, precedent study from Kengo Kuma’s Yusuhara town hall reflects the significance of nailed bolts, therefore I developed this type of joints to put these clusters on organized grid.

Holiday fair

This drawing indicates potential detailed activities of off school ecomnomy. Ideally school can become a communal space where local people will be able to come in and interact with each other. In this case, the place this school has taken can be considered as “returned back to the public rather than isolated from society.

Analysis of curriculum schedule Classrooms’ doors are painted in order to respond Waldorf’s mental colour, on the other hand colours may also reflects children’s grade and level of agricultural levels should be working on. For security reasons students in lower grades are recommended to take care of crops rather than animals which might cause potential harm. Pottery courses will benefit children’s sense of physical objects and arts while Eurthmy dancing course will help their mental growth of respecting nature and gods apart from ordinary courses in usual classrooms.

Buttermere lake is a hiking tourist attractions on the fringe of Lake District, also it is a complete rural region where the only access for transport is a national sponsored road. It is ideal for agents to be trained to do stamina, crosscountry and diving lessons.

The origin of this scheme is to build accessible roof available to both tourists and trainers whilst underneath space is only opened to trainers. This frame-joint model tests the potential of pin-joint structure using in large span system.

Mirror Cube A 7-day contemporary housing crisis research & prototype design worked in group of three. By visiting and researching exemplar the Keeling Tower, we group of three spent three days and proposed a new type of “Airbnb” living style units. Each unit provide shared living spaces and lettable units for temporary visitors and permanent bedrooms for the householder. The initiative is to maximize opportunity of sociability at shared space as well as center circulation core and sustainability performance by converting pre-cast concrete to insulated CLT panels. At this quick design exercise, my role is to design associating with other two and produce views and sketches of plans and sections.
