Categories of carvings include animals, birds, flowers, mythical creatures, jewelry, carousel animals, knife carvings, wooden toys, spoons, gourds, bowls, and wood burning. Most categories also include subcategories like types of birds. Both members and non-members may enter the competition. Ribbons will be awarded according to points received.
Entries will be judged by Adair Rucker and Rich Wetherbee.

Rally on the Rio
The Woodcarving Show will be followed by the Rally on the Rio, six days of carving classes with nationally known instructors. The Rally on the Rio will be held January 17 through January 22 at the Nomad Shrine Club.
The rally is an opportunity for woodcarvers of all skill levels, and those wanting to learn, to participate in carving, pyrography and painting classes. Classes vary in length from one to six days, according to the complexity of the project. Classes begin at 8 a.m. and end for the day at 4:30 p.m. You can register online at https://www.rgvwoodcarvers.org/ the-rally-on-the-rio/. Instructors include Tony Dill teaching Aspen Walking Stick, Mountain Man Face and Carving a Santa; Fernando Gutierrez with Power Carving; Dennis Horstman with Willow Canes and Walking Sticks; Chip Carving by Jan Jenson; and many more. Other instructors include Gen Kreyling, Brenda Lodermeier, Jim Long, Lance Rath, Adair Rucker, Patty Rucker, Harry Seurkamp, Fred and Elaine Stenman, Jim Thalacker, George Vaughn and Rich Wetherbee. Newmar Owner’s Monthly Luncheon
The Newmar Owner’s Monthly Luncheon will meet at the American Legion on the Second Wednesday of the month through March. It will be held January 12 at 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost for lunch is $13 per person. This is for all Newmar owner’s past and present. Guests are welcome to attend. National Rural Letter Carriers
The National Rural Letter Carriers will be meeting at Ann’s Restaurant on Wednesday, January 19. The meeting will start with registration at 9 a.m., with the program at 9:30 a.m. Lunch will be afterwards. Attendees will be ordering off the menu. Rio Grande Valley Woodcarvers
The Rio Grande Valley Woodcarvers have begun their 20212022 season. The woodcarvers are meeting again this year at the Nomad Shrine Club, 1044 W. Nolana Blvd., in Pharr. Join the group from 8 a.m. until noon every Thursday through March of 2022. Gather with old friends, and new, to carve, visit and share ideas. Please use the north end of the parking lot for parking. Also, please use the back door to enter the building. Participants will be setting up their own tables for the time being. Be sure to clean up your area before leaving at the end of the day.
