Welcome to the 1st International Conference and Exhibition on Community Based Tourism in Phuket! This practical conference is hosted by Phuket College of International Tourism [PCIT], Phuket Rajabhat University. Our aims are (1) to promote the exchange of knowledge and international experiences in the development of community based tourism, (2) to promote sustainable tourism development in Phuket and Thailand, (3) to promote reputation of Phuket as a tourist destination at the international level; and finally to promote the networking cooperation with partners in the form of the development of community based tourism at the international level which may lead to more knowledge exchanges and long-term cooperation. This International conference involves international keynote speakers addressing sustainable tourism issues, discussions on current issues and situations in Phuket community based tourism, presentations of community based tourism in the ASEAN region, exhibitions of community based tourism in Phuket and a visit to various attractions and activities in Phuket communities to truly learn and understand community based tourism development in Phuket. The conference will hopefully allow for a more sustained and focused investigation of community based tourism topics nationally and internationally. Please also celebrate with us the adoption of 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. Together, let’s recognize and promote the importance of international tourism, and particularly of the designation of an international year of sustainable tourism for development, in fostering better understanding among peoples everywhere, in leading to a greater awareness of the rich heritage of various civilizations and in bringing about a better appreciation of the inherent values of different cultures, thereby contributing to the strengthening of peace in the world. I would like to extend my gratitude to those who helped establish this conference, chiefs amongst which are Miss Kritpada Petchvaree, Mr.Koenjareon Limsubchuea, Miss Kuntamanee Chuayruang and Mr.Abhinan Charoenrakviddhaya who took on the Superhuman task of setting up the project and patiently helped me find our way around it; Ajarn Palm, Ajarn Got, Ajarn Oh and Ajarn M, for agreeing to work on this conference; the PCIT academic and supporting staff; the Phuket Community Based Tourism committees and representatives for their outstanding work; all the sub contractor teams and the Phuket Provincial Office for its support and funding of this project. The Project

The Project
Project title : Phuket Community Based Tourism Development and Promotion Activity : The 1st International Conference & Exhibition on Community Based Tourism in Phuket [P-CBT 2017] Summary : Rationale The number of tourists, both domestic and international, that visit Phuket is around 15 million per year. As a result, Phuket gains revenue of approximately 260,442 million per year from the tourism sector. The beaches have become the most popular tourist attractions for tourists who visit Phuket. On the other hand, most tourists are not much interested in nature, culture, and local community destinations. However, Phuket has rich culture and variety of tourist attractions such as Sino Portuguese architecture, old temples, historical places, agricultural centers, the mining museum and etc. The reasons why most tourists are not interested in nature, culture, and the local community include: 1) These types of tourist attractions are not prompt for international markets. 2) Lack of information concerning nature, culture, and local community attractions that are avaliable to the tourists. 3) The communities are not quite ready to the tourist service industry. 4) Lack of community management teams. 5) Lack of public relations and advertisement. The 1st International Conference and Exhibition is hence forth necessary 1) To promote the exchange of knowledge and international experiences in the development of community based tourism. 2) To promote sustainable tourism development in Phuket and Thailand. 3) To promote reputation of Phuket as a tourist destination for community based tourism at the international level. 4) To promote networking cooperation with partners in the form of community based tourism development at the international level which may lead to more knowledge exchanges and long-term cooperation.

Community Based Tourism
THAILAND Community based tourism (CBT) gives guests a fun opportunity to meet local people and learn about life, culture and nature in Thai communities. Programs are managed and operated by local community members, working in a CBT group. CBT programs are designed to build local capacity while supporting social and environmental work.

Community-Based Ecotourism (CBET) addresses the well-being of the community and the surrounding environment. While supporting local communities and improving livelihoods, the natural and cultural resources of the area are protected and conserved. Ecotourism is a type of sustainable tourism in which tourists experience, appreciate and enjoy the nature and culture of their destination. The negative impacts of tourism are minimized while an incentive for conserving natural and cultural features is provided.
Indonesia’s communities welcome visitors with open arms - these villages expose travelers to fascinating individual facets of Indonesia found nowhere else in the world.
The Public-Private Partnership (PPP), coupled with Community-Based Tourism (CBT) offers communities an opportunity to access the global market while helping to minimise the negative impacts. Likewise it offers the tour company the chance to invest in an authentic village-based tour programme without having to develop skills in community development approaches. The CBT approach with PPP creates local ownership, jobs and sources of income, trains local personnel, and transfers business know-how and technology in a sustainable and participatory manner. It links and draws on the strengths of the community, the private partner and the public sector. Being a Muslim country which places great emphasis on the comfort and convenience of its Muslim residents and guests, Malaysia perfectly caters to the needs of Muslim travellers. Mosques and mushollas can easily be found in each district around the country, and ample prayer facilities are available almost everywhere – tourist attractions, shopping malls, airports, parks and most public places. Most restaurants in the country serve halal food – including international fast-food franchises – which are all certified by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), Malaysia’s sole Halal certification body. Many of Malaysia’s accommodation including international hotel chains provide Qibla direction and prayer mats in their guest rooms. The country also offers Islamic tour packages which accommodate religious needs such as prayer stops during tours and halal meals.

In Myanmar, the CBT should encourage agricultural production. The government needs to build linkages with agriculture, fishing, food processing, handicrafts and other services. Such linkages provide sustainable market opportunities for local suppliers and strengthen local production while offering tourists an authentic cultural exposure. In many cases, local communities partner with private companies and nonprofits that provide money, marketing, clients, tourist accommodations and expertise for opening up lands to visitors. In 1997, eco-travel operator Rainforest Expeditions wanted international visitors to learn about threats to the rainforest. Natives in Peru’s Esé-eja community of Infierno wanted to generate income without destroying their rainforest home, central to their subsistence lifestyle. So the two joined forces and the resulting Posada Amazonas lodge to this day offers visitors an exotic way to learn about rainforest ecology directly from English-speaking Esé-eja staff, who in-turn earn a living sharing their local knowledge and traditions.
Singapore’s local culture runs deep, and is tied to Singaporeans’ passion for good food and friendly neighborhoods. Koh Lon, Rawai Sub-District Community
One hundred years ago, the villager Toe Na Ngu travelling from he province of Satun to settle down on Koh Lon or Lon Island, an undeveloped forest island. Later on, other villagers noticed there was someone living in this area, they started to move to this area and build their own houses on the island. Ban Koh Lon (Koh Lon Village) was offically establihed in 1937. The first village headman was Mr. Dole Songmueng. It had a population of 33 households. The village headman explained that this island was first called “Koh Lon” due to its original feature. During the farming season, most of the villagers nearby were afraid that their buffaloes would devour all the rice in their fields, so they waded while taking their buffaloes that were our mainly tied around sculling boats to Koh Lon. When the season ended, those buffalos’ owners took them back. However, even tied with rope, some could escape and were left there. The wild buffaloes ate all the trees and bared the island. It was then called “Ban Koh Lon” (“Lon” in Thai means bald). Rawai Community has been developing its community tourism since 2007. Its community tourism activities are as follows: - Batik Activity: Runway Industry Search Koh Lon Homestay - Koh Katen (Tanan Island) - Koh Lon (Lon Island)
