Mindfulness & Photography
FIONA TURNBULL, co-owner and tutor at Lacock Photography, discusses how photography can help ease those everyday stresses...
With so many us battling with the stresses of modern living, it’s no wonder that mindfulness has become such a hot topic, especially over the last few years. If you haven’t heard of the well-being movement (which has actually been around since the 1960s), it is the practice of focusing on what we’re doing, thinking and feeling, and giving our minds a much needed break from everyday anxieties. The photographic community have made many connections between the act of taking photographs and this meditative technique, exploring how photography helps to increase awareness of one’s surroundings, appreciate beauty in the small things and view the world from a different perspective. If you have an interest in well-being, but perhaps find the idea of meditating a little too New Age, the photography and mindfulness combo, aptly named ‘mindful photography’, could be a great activity to get into in 2022! HOW DO I TAKE PHOTOS IN A MINDFUL WAY?

Photography increases your awareness and appreciation of the world around you
Mindful photography encourages you to take photos spur-of-the-moment, and so discouraging you from having any preconceived ideas about your images. This spontaneous approach to photography can be achieved by always having a camera to hand, whether that be your DSLR or your phone, and letting a photograph present itself to you rather than tracking one down. You should also try letting your mind and photographs explore the smaller details in life; for example, if you cross paths with a cat, take a close look at the pattern of its fur or the colour of its eyes. This visual focusing technique is extremely calming, and will get you taking better shots than ever before.
WHAT IF I DON’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHY?
You don’t need to know anything about photography, but if you do have an interest in exploring the basics, then go for it! Getting to grips with your camera will give you confidence and help you express yourself more effectively, but the key thing is to get out there and enjoy yourself.
WHY TAKE UP MINDFUL PHOTOGRAPHY?
Mixing mindfulness with photography is an amazing way to relax, explore your creativity and foster a healthy and positive mindset. Mindful photography uses visual experience as an anchor (whereas traditional meditation focuses on breathing) and so it really increases your awareness and appreciation of the world around you. It’s also a great reason to get moving and brave the outdoors; the well-being benefits of fresh air and exercise should never be underestimated!
