ALL WIRED UP

BY THOMAS BARKER

BECOMING A LEGEND It’s hard to believe that we are only five weeks away from the 3rd Annual Miami Beach Gay Pride. I remember meeting with my fellow members of the newly formed Mayor’s Gay Business Enhancement Committee at City Hall to discuss the development of Miami Beach’s first gay pride. At the time, we all had big dreams and aspirations for the event, but none of us could have imagined how quickly Pride has grown in such a short period of time. To our surprise, Miami Beach Gay Pride’s first year attracted 15,000 more people than anticipated with nearly 20,000 people in attendance! Last year, Miami Beach Gay Pride grew even more, attracting close to 35,000 Pride revelers! And this year, we can only expect for Miami Beach Gay Pride to be even bigger and better with an expected attendance of more than 45,000 revelers, making Miami Beach Gay Pride the largest single day event in the City of Miami Beach exclusively catered to the gay community!

for the public, which is very important, as it allows any and everyone of any means to celebrate their Pride!

Now on to another very exciting development for Miami Beach Gay Pride:

Over the next few weeks, Miami Beach Gay Pride will be doing some major fundraising to cover the cost of producing this massive event, including a variety of fundraising events at each of Miami Beach’s seven day a week gay bars. In fact, The Palace is asking all of its costumers to donate at least $1 to Miami Beach Gay Pride when they are presented with their check. MOVA will be hosting a bachelor auction. TWIST will be doing what they do best, which is continue to host amazing parties with a portion of the proceeds being donated. Score will kick off a new weekly party with DJ Abel with the funds from that event going directly to Pride.

Turns out that Andy Cohen, Bravo’s executive vice president of original programming and development, will be the Grand Marshal of the 2011 Miami Beach Gay Pride Parade on Saturday, April 16th.

There’s nothing like partying for a cause, and what better cause than Miami Beach’s very own Gay Pride Weekend! Stay tuned to Wire Magazine for dates and times for these events!

Obviously as Miami Beach Gay Pride grows, so does its budget. Between closing down Ocean Drive for the day, providing the appropriate trash and recycling receptacles, entertainers, staging, and, of course, City fees, Miami Beach Gay Pride requires quite a bit of funds!

As a former member of the Miami Beach Gay Pride board, I am also asking all of readers to become a Miami Beach Gay Pride Legend for only $20.11, an Angel for $500, or Archangel for $1,000. No matter which level you can support Pride, every single dollar helps Miami Beach Gay Pride organize one of the most important events for our community in South Florida.

And unlike a number of other Prides that take place around the world, Miami Beach Gay Pride is a completely free event

Visit www.miamibeachgaypride.org to become a Legend, Angel, or Archangel!

Since Andy took over the network’s current development and production slate of over two dozen shows, the network has become the home of gay viewers’ reality TV favorites, including hits such as the Emmy and James Beard awardwinning “Top Chef,” “Top Chef Masters,” “The Real Housewives” series, “Kathy Griffin My Life On the D List,” “The Millionaire Matchmaker,” “Million Dollar Listing,” “The Rachel Zoe Project,” “The Fashion Show: Ultimate Collection,” “Bethenny Ever After,” “Tabatha’s Salon Takeover”, and “Flipping Out.” Asked in a recent interview whether Bravo has become a “gay network,” Andy stated, “I’m always saying we’re bi, but I think it’s kind of how I view myself being gay — it’s just one of things that I am,” he said. “So Bravo may or may not be gay, but I think there’s a lot of other things going on. I think for the gay people on Bravo, it’s one of the things that they are — they’re not on Bravo because they’re gay. The people that are gay on Bravo, like Brad on Rachel Zoe or Jeff on ‘Flipping Out,’ they’re gay but they’re also great at what they do and that’s why they’re on Bravo, and that’s important.” We couldn’t agree more! Welcome aboard Andy!

The food was delicious, the cocktails were yummy, and the décor is beautiful and refreshing for Miami Beach – it really reminds me of New York City. The new Rosa restaurant is yet another great addition to 1111 Lincoln Road. It is amazing to see what a difference there is between what the west end of Lincoln Road (next to Alton Road) has turned out to be, versus the east end of Lincoln (next to Washington Avenue). Lincoln Road now offers a first rate experience thanks to 1111, all the great dining and retail alternatives within it, plus the other great alternatives right across from 1111, including the Regal South Beach Cinema complex. TOP TRAX: ELECTRIC LADY LAB

BY DJ FR8-O

or all the boys who tear off their shirts as they tear up the dance floor, and all the girls who tap their stilettos to a never-ending beat: Winter Music Conference is finally here! For 26 years WMC has brought together recording artists, DJs, industry reps, and followers from all over the world to Miami for one purpose—to celebrate dance music! With so much amazing talent in town for the next few days, it wouldn’t have been fair for me to feature just one or two. Instead I set my sights on a Danish duo that couldn’t make it to South Beach this year, but will no doubt be the talk of the industry in the months ahead. At first, Electric Lady Lab may seem like just another Euro-synth band jumping on the 80s bandwagon, but one earful of their current single, “You & Me”, will change your tune faster than you can say “leg warmers”. Speaking of legs, Stine Hjelm Jacobsen’s are as never-ending as her vocal talent, and don’t even get me started on producer Martin Bøge Pedersen’s (ehem) accomplishments! I wasn’t about to let E.L.L. go underexposed this week and was lucky enough to get the big picture on their debut album FLASH! How did you guys get together? S: We met in high school and played in a band together. Stine was the lead singer and Martin played the drums. M: Later I moved to Las Vegas and Stine moved to London and we didn’t hang out for the next 10 years. While in Vegas, I wrote songs for a new pop project and asked her if she would be interested in being the lead singer and here we are! I love the name Electric Lady Lab? Is there a story behind it? S: When we signed with our Danish label, Mermaid Records/Sony Music, we didn’t have a name yet. In the office we found a book called “1000 Best Albums of All Time”. M: We fell in love with the album cover of Jimmy Hendrix’s “Electric Lady Land” with naked women all over the place. We played around with the title and ended up with “Electric Lady Lab.” What do you think about the recent surge of dance music in commercial pop? S: We LOVE it! It’s been going on forever in Europe/Scandinavia. With bands like KLF, Snap, and Aqua, Euro-dance dominated the 90s. Daft Punk and other house producers took dance music to a new level and it kind of stuck to the pop music somehow. Timbaland and Neptunes did a great job bringing the sounds of dance music into hip hop, R&B and pop in a really cool way. 18 | wire magazine | wireweekly.com

M: We like to think that genres aren’t really that important anymore. Everybody is inspired by all kinds of music now. Good music is good music! If you could collaborate with any international recording artist who would it be? S: We are dreaming of a duet with Dave Gahan! He is such a cool guy and sounds amazing when he sings in the lower end. And the fact that he has never been featured on any songs outside of the Depeche Mode universe is appealing to us. M: Also working with Stuart Price, Rick Rubin, or Justice would be exciting. Do you think “Flash!” will help you put Denmark on the international dance music map? S: Yes! We think we have some really strong tunes on “Flash!” Sometimes all it takes is that one hit song at the right time. M: We are 100% focused on building up Electric Lady Lab. We have been talking about moving our studio to the U.S. for a while just to be around all the inspiring people and because the shitty weather in Denmark is killing us (laughs)! Do you have any crazy stories about making the album? M: We wanted to sample “Rhythm is a Dancer” by Snap on our song “You & Me”. Everybody was telling us to for-

get about it because Snap had never approved a sample request before. All the record companies either told us “No!” or didn’t answer our emails or phone calls. Then one day a guy from Berlin showed interest in some of our songs and came to Copenhagen to meet up with us. We played the song for him and told him we couldn’t get the sample cleared. Turns out he knew the guys in Snap personally and called them right there while we we’re having lunch at a cafe. Two days later we received an email from Snap saying “Really cool track guys! Go ahead.” When can we expect to see you live in the U.S.? Maybe a little stop on South Beach? S: We’d love to tour in the U.S.! South Beach is definitely among the favorite places we want to visit. The nightlife is incredible and there are so many beautiful people everywhere. We are trying to plan a club tour playing gay clubs in the U.S. You guys know how to party! What would you like to say to all the dance music fans here at Winter Music Conference? To all the dance/electronic pop music lovers in Miami: check out the Electric Lady Lab remixes and videos on YouTube or www.myspace.com/electricladylab. We are currently working on a new album and will keep you updated on our Myspace or Facebook with tour dates, news, and pictures. We’re looking forward to seeing you all in South Beach later this year! If you’re a DJ, producer, or artist and would like your song, album or remix featured in TOP TRAX, gimme a shout at alfredo@wireweekly.com.
