Harry L. Hinson
Photo: Paul Godwin Photography
Long-time Trustee and Show House Chairman Harry Hinson passed away on September 4, 2014 – a loss for all who knew him, for two generations of Kips Bay children, and for his partner, Mr. Tripp March, most of all. Harry will forever be associated with this Decorator Show House, our signature event and largest private income source from its inception in 1971. The Show House success today can be attributed in large part to Mr. Hinson’s leadership. It was a committed core group, led by Harry Hinson, who were the champions of the Show House. We are indebted and grateful to them all. In recent years, after retirement from active participation in Show House management, Mr. Hinson continued to be a generous donor to the Show House Boutique. The Show House is what it is today in large part because of Harry Hinson’s dedication to Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club. May his contribution to the lives of thousands of Bronx children be long remembered.

Chairman's Message
welcome to the 2015 kips bay show house
Photo: Tria Giovan
Dear Friends, It is hard to believe that this is really the 43rd year of the Kips Bay Decorator Show House. By some magic we were again able to locate a wonderful town house on East 66th Street to showcase the remarkable work of some of the country’s stars of interior design. With their help and your support each year, the Show House raises essential funds which enables the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club to provide vital after-school and enrichment programs to more than 10,000 talented young people throughout the Bronx. So as you walk through this year’s house with your cell phones and note pads, gathering cards and fresh ideas, please know how sincerely grateful all of us at Kips Bay are for your support and involvement with the show house. It is because of friends like you that Kips Bay is able to build futures for the children we serve. Sincerely,
Bunny Williams Chair, Show House Committee

President's Message
A Winter’s Eve in 1915 Dear Show House Patrons, Friends and Participants: I am honored and delighted to greet you as President of the Board of this venerable institution celebrating its 100th year in 2015. Welcome to the 43rd edition of the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club Decorator Show House – our annual rite-of-spring and paean to the home design industry. Elsewhere in this journal and in events to come later this year you will learn of our birth on a winter’s eve in 1915. In the Kips Bay neighborhood of Manhattan “street boys” were making life difficult for the residents. The social service state of today was non-existent. What did exist was the impulse of citizens to join together for a common good. And so the Kips Bay Neighborhood Association met on a February evening in 1915 and Kips Bay Boys Club was born. Its mission, stated in the incorporation, was “the physical and social guidance and development of boys and young men in order to fit them to become worthy members of the community.” That was then. Our mission now is to “enrich and enhance the quality of life for all young people by providing educational and developmental programs, with special emphasis on youngsters between ages 6 - 18 who come from disadvantaged or disenfranchised circumstances.” We perform this mission for more than 10,000 youngsters annually at 2 clubhouses, 2 housing projects, 4 public schools, a rustic camp, and 2 homeless shelters. And we do it well. A recent national Boys & Girls Club alumni survey by Luis Harris Associates found that fully 57% of alumni said that their club saved their life. Also found: only 2% of African American male alumni do not graduate from high school, while nationally 21% do not achieve this credential. We are focused, not on our past, but on future generations of children. As the 2015 Show House opens we are announcing the public phase of a centennial campaign to ensure that Kips Bay remains vital. Our plans include expanding space for younger members including a new education center, creating new initiatives to improve egregious Bronx high school graduation rates for young minority men, building a digital fine arts center, and much more. By participating in the Show House you help Kips Bay fulfill our mission and achieve these goals. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Enjoy this beautiful Show House.

Executive director’s message
a cenTury of iMpacT Hello everyone and welcome to Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club's 43rd Annual Decorator Show House. This year’s Show House is coming off one of its most successful years in history. Last year over 15,000 patrons attended the event at the Villard Houses, Stanford White’s renaissance revival masterpiece at 50th and Madison. The funds raised by our signature and most remunerative special event provide critical underwriting for club members going to private high schools and colleges, for our education programs in homework help, reading and math, in computer literacy, and for our career exploration programs that prepare club members for the complex society we live in. Happily, the Show House, in turn, also makes a significant contribution to the interior design industry, having nurtured and enhanced the careers of both young and established designers. I thank all of the designers, design patrons, and high-end home furnishing industry leaders who sustain this unique corporate/charitable partnership. This year Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club celebrates its 100th anniversary -- a century of impacting children, changing lives and saving lives. Today we serve over 10,000 young people at nine Bronx locations and a rustic camp. The challenges faced by young people today may be a bit more complex than when we opened our door 100 years ago in the Kips Bay section of Manhattan, but their basic needs remain the same: A safe place to go, a sense of self-worth and belonging, finding a passion and pursuing it. The genius of Boys & Girls Clubs begins each day when a youngster walks through our door and is greeted by the same staff member asking how they are feeling, if they have had anything to eat, and if they have any homework to do. Simple questions. And, over time, life-changing questions for a population where almost 60% come from single-parent homes, 50% won't graduate high school, and too many will end up incarcerated, as unwed parents or on drugs. Over the last century we have become more sophisticated with technology and a lot more educational and employment programs, but our guiding principle remains preparing our children for the challenges of tomorrow. It's encouraging to learn from our outcome surveys that we continue to graduate 85 to 90% of all seniors surveyed, and 55 to 60% of them end up going to college -- both figures well above the average in Bronx high schools. This is the real return on investment that empowers our children, fuels our economy and keeps our neighborhoods and communities vibrant and productive. Over the last 18 years my goal has been to give as many children as possible the Kips Bay experience that shaped me as a child. It is you -- the Show House family -- who do so much to give me this privilege and I am indebted to you forever.

he lavish homes that line the streets of the Upper East Side make it difficult to imagine that the property they stand on was once considered insignificant by Manhattan’s aristocracy. Most who lived in New York City were unable to traverse the undeveloped countryside above midtown except on foot or horseback. The land above 60th Street was either vacant or occupied by farmlands, not at all what we picture today when we think of the neighborhood east of Central Park. With the completion of the Park in 1873, the blocks east of Fifth Avenue began to experience a building boom. Brownstone residences for the merchant class were popping up left and right. By 1877, developer Ira E. Doying began construction on 58 East Sixty Sixth Street, which was originally part of a row of ten such brownstones designed by J.H. Valentine. Alfred Stieglitz, the influential photographer and art promoter as well as the infamously flirtatious Samuel

Adams were both owners during the period between 1898 and 1908. As “Millionaires’ Row” began to migrate northward along Central Park, many brownstones were being renovated into lavish homes. Financier Arthur Sachs, a member of the firm Goldman Sachs & Co., saw potential in No. 58. He purchased the property in 1908 for his wife, the former Alice Goldschmidt and their young son, James. Sachs commissioned architects Buchman & Fox to redesign the limestone Beaux-Arts style mansion at an estimated cost of $25,000. The 20 foot wide, five-story mansion included an elaborate exterior with wrought iron doors and a towering mansard roof. Three rectangular second floor windows were accented with an arched lintel and cartouche embraced by an iron balcony. A cornice above the third story with round arched pediments and second cartouche extended into the mansard which included round arched dormers.
4/23/15 2:57 PM
In 1919, Sachs sold the mansion to power company magnate Lewis Brown Gawtry and his wife Olive. Gawtry sat on the boards of many power companies and was Vice President of Consolidated Gas Company of New York. However, he is most remembered for his work with the Boy Scouts of America. As a member of the BSA’s National Council, Gawtry was a staunch advocate for working children, common in the early 1900s. He founded a troop of young workers, from three different city utility companies, calling them the “industrial troops.” Camp Gawtry was formed upstate as a year round getaway for inner city scouts.
However, the plans fell flat and the mansion was sold in February 1944 to Dr. Gerald O’Brien and his wife Felice. Dr. O’Brien, who was affiliated with St. Clare’s Hospital and St. Vincent’s Hospital, maintained the familiar Beaux-Arts façade while making major renovations inside. A first floor office was built with a lavish apartment on the second and third stories for the family. The fourth and fifth floors were renovated into a rental apartment.

kips bay boys & girls club HAROLD MALDONADO, Jr. a kips bay life Hello and greetings to patrons, fans and participants of the 2015 Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club Decorator Show House. Thank you, as always, for your contribution to our signature event and largest source of private income. This year is a special one for us. We are celebrating our 100th anniversary. Our founding was similar to most venerable Boys & Girls Clubs and, indeed, to the creation of a national organization to support the Movement. The problem was feral boys running wild in the neighborhood. So one evening in the winter of 1915 the Kips Bay Neighborhood Association met to address the matter and Kips Bay Boys Club was born. For almost half of our 100 years our professional youth development staff has been graced by the presence of Harold Maldonado, Jr. In the following pages I want to introduce you to Harold and his remarkable 46-year (and counting) career at "The Bay." It is a career that began almost from the day in 1969 that we opened in the Bronx. It is a career laden with accolades and accomplishments: Kips Bay Employee of the Year in 1970; co-founder of the performing arts at Kips Bay in the 1980s; twice Boys & Girls Club North-East Region Professional Staff of the Year; special event impresario extraordinaire; and much more. Enjoy "A Kips Bay Life." Daniel Quintero

1969 – A BOYS CLUB COMES TO THE BRONX Kips Bay's move to the Bronx in 1969 began several years earlier. By the 1960s it was more than clear that New York City's boys in greatest need did not live on Manhattan's East Side. Our East 52nd Street Clubhouse welcomed all -- including future Trustee and benefactor Manny Villafana -- who would travel from his home in the South Bronx. Nevertheless, Executive Director Charles McNiven and the Board leadership began to look for a community whose boys we could enroll and inspire. Longtime Trustee Monte Hackett recalls being part of a delegation that met with the Planning Commission of Mayor John Lindsay. Consider the Soundview section of the Bronx they were told. Much public housing had been built, more was in the pipeline, and a growing population of children lacked services. A site was found at White Plains Road and Randall Avenue, a capital campaign was mounted, and a Boys Club began to grow in the Bronx. Watching the construction was 16-year-old Harold Maldonado, Jr. There was no signage to indicate what was coming and every week Harold would pass by to check out the new "neighbor." Finally in June 1969 Harold observed a man in the building and knocked on the glass door and asked, "What is this?" "A Boys Club" said staff member Lenny Cohen, "want to come in?" "Sure!" came the reply. Harold still remembers the new smell of the building and how big it was. In short order Lenny enrolled Harold's youngest brother Bobby as the very first Bronx club member and Harold as the second. Two weeks later Harold was hired as a junior staff member, at $1.75 an hour, launching a career that continues in 2015. Kips Bay Boys Club was a magnet for neighborhood boys, including 10-year-old Danny Quintero, who now had a club of their own to match the exclusive Shore Haven private club on nearby Long Island Sound whose membership fee their families could not afford. Harold took to youth development work, learning from Lenny Cohen, scheduling, age grouping, club citizenship rules, running tournaments, recognizing youngsters' accomplishments, and more. Six months in Lenny suggested to Harold that he could have a career in Boys Club work. Lenny introduced the young apprentice to Boys Clubs of America staff at national headquarters opposite the United Nations in Manhattan, and the following year Harold traveled to Boston for the national Keystone Club Conference. Harold saw that the Club was a window to a big world, an insight he was to employ over the years as the K-Company toured widely across the nation.

The 1970s – WE GROW AND BECOME A RESOURCE TO During the 1960s and 70s much of the Bronx was a tough place as Kips Bay Boys Club was taking root in a new environment, very different from East 52nd Street, our last Manhattan clubhouse. Our new home, the Bronx, was experiencing a massive population shift of middle class families moving out and low income families, many from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and the American South, moving in. Popular culture reflected the plight of the Bronx in books and movies like "Report from Engine Co. 82" and "Fort Apache the Bronx." Perhaps the moment that the rawness which life in the Bronx could be was most indelibly captured in game 2 of the 1977 World Series. As a raging fire, not far from Yankee Stadium, filled the television screen, the inimitable Howard Cosell intoned: "Ladies and gentlemen, the Bronx is burning."
Palmaro Clubhouse swimming pool under construction in 1975. Alumnus and Trustee Manuel Villafana wrote on the plaque naming the pool in his honor: "May God give us the wisdom and love to mold the young men that this pool will bring us."
It was in this Bronx that a youthful Harold Maldonado experienced Kips Bay as a safe place, and a haven where staff treated club members well, setting a tone that carried over into club members' relations with each other. Fights or rowdy behavior, all too common in and around schools of the era, were almost non-existent at the Club. Parent and families saw that as well and were comforted. Adding the pool in 1976 was testimony to all that the leadership of the organization, with Manny Villafana as lead donor in the capital campaign to build it, cared about the youngsters and their community. The pool was a luxury that few could afford other than in their Club. Though poor in quality the photo to the right conveys the joy and exuberance of club members enjoying the pool. The Club's wood and pottery shops were places where you could make something. To this day Harold has a name plate he made in 1970 as a junior staff club member.

A COMMUNITY, ITS CHILDREN AND ITS FAMILIES To the right is the Comanche Torch Club in a photo taken in the early 1970s. Torch Clubs are the Boys & Girls Club program for 10- to 12-year-olds that develop civic awareness, leadership and personal responsibility. Teen club members have Keystone Club which addresses the same issues. Harold recalls serving as a staff mentor to Torch Clubs in those days, and how much club activity was organized around the 7 or 8 Torch Clubs that operated at any one time. Torch Clubs chose their own name that was printed on tee shirts, chose officers and created by-laws. The clubs competed as teams in sports programming. The experience was one of team building, developing friendships, and youngsters learning about each other. Twice a year Torch Clubs would have a Saturday overnight in the games room. The fireplace was lit and youngsters stayed up until 2:00 am – camping without leaving the Bronx!

Families were welcome in the new clubhouse. Lenny Cohen created a "Mom and Dad Club" and hosted its monthly meeting with Harold’s assistance. Topics included learning about the program opportunities for club members, taking and discussing parent suggestions, and identifying parent voluntary opportunities and requirements thereof. The library was an important feature of the clubhouse. It conveyed the importance of learning, offered a quiet place for home work, and lent books on the honor system. Harold’s first assignment as a junior staff member was to learn to categorize donated books using the Dewey Decimal System and to make their lending record cards. Today our library is filled with computers, Nooks and Kindles. Coming is a digital fine arts center for club members of all ages.

LORENZO “LARRY’ MALDONADO – AN INSPIRATION
Awards night 1984. Dance program participants gather around program creator Lorenzo Maldonado. (clockwise from upper left) Chantell Maldonado, Nicole, Kerry Washington, Eliza, Erica Strubbe, Lorraine Martinez and Leslie Martinez.
Lorenzo “Larry” Maldonado was Harold's younger brother by two years and he was born to dance. In 8th grade he auditioned for and was accepted to the High School of Performing Arts, celebrated as "Fame" High School on stage, television and big screen. By 16 he was performing with Ballet Hispanico and travelled with the company to Europe at a very young age. In 1982 Larry approached Harold about starting a dance program at Kips Bay. He would do so as a volunteer. Harold went to then Executive Director Jim Schwab who approved and the performing arts had come to Kips Bay Boys Club. Both a rapidly growing girl membership and the 1983 completion of the Hellen Hollerith Wing of the clubhouse with its stage and sound system made conditions fertile for the arts. (Although we would officially become a Boys & Girls Club several years later, girls were welcomed as full club members from the beginning of the 1980s.) Larry's dance/performing arts program was an immediate success. Remarkably, among the earliest participants were future superstars Jennifer Lopez and Kerry Washington. Larry knew that a culminating annual performance event was an essential part of professional arts instruction. Thus our annual recital, that Larry named "Broadway Babies," took place in June of 1983. ("Broadway Babies XXXII" will take place in June 2015.) The recital remains our one annual event where even beginning dance students get to experience the self-esteem building of public performance before family and friends. Early on a group of mothers of dance participants organized themselves as "Larry's Momsin-Motion" and these joyful volunteers were everywhere -- sewing costumes, raising money with Saturday food sales in the clubhouse, acting as chaperones on trips, applying makeup, comforting a nervous youngster backstage … 112

A TRAGIC LOSS … AND A PROMISE KEPT Luz Sosa, an original Mom-in-Motion, remembers Larry's kindness and love for all children. He was a serious teacher and also very caring, talking to participants as the children they were. Once, Luz recalled, her youngest, age 6, spilled juice on herself at the recital and began to cry. Larry, busy orchestrating the whole event, nevertheless noticed and came to successfully comfort his young student before her stage appearance (see photo right). Larry believed in the arts for all. A child at any level of ability could take a dance class. For more accomplished youngsters there were musical productions – "Jesus Christ Superstar" in 1983 with Jennifer Lopez in the cast, and "Annie" in 1984 with 7-year-old Kerry Washington playing one of the orphans.
Lorenzo Maldonado comforting 6-year-old Leslie Martinez.
Another gifted youngster, Anthony Rodriguez, danced "Fabulous Feet" from "The Tap Dance Kid" with Larry at the 1984 recital. It was a show stopper! Anthony went on to become a brilliant dancer and choreographer -- at Kips Bay through high school graduation; as founder/leader of his own company "La Santa Luz;" and choreographer to Madonna and many others. It seemed that with Larry Maldonado's performing arts program, Kips Bay had caught lighting on stage. But Larry's brilliant star was to shine at Kips Bay for only 2 years. By 1985 he had contracted the mortal disease that was to take his life in January 1986. During his illness Larry asked Harold to continue the arts program and Harold promised he would. It was a promise kept … to this day. The 1985 recital, Broadway Babies III, was a heartfelt tribute to Larry, with a bouquet of flowers placed near the stage in his honor. In his passing, Lorenzo Maldonado remained an inspiration to those he touched both young and old. Harold continued the dance program, eventually featuring classes in Modern, Latin, African, hip-hop, and Jazz. It took a little while to mount another musical, but "West Side Story" was presented in 1988, featuring a young comic named Rich Ramirez playing Tony, and Leslie Lopez, Jennifer's sister, playing Maria. Rich would remain an important staff member in the arts program for the next 25 years.

"K-company" becomes boys & girls club In late 1990 Harold Maldonado had an idea that would lead to recognition as the top Boys & Girls Club program in cultural arts at the 1991 Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) National Conference in Washington, D. C. The idea was the "K-Company" touring dance and vocal troupe, and they quickly became the public face of Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club. Twenty-five years and hundreds of participants later, K-Company is still our window to the world. Harold's thought was: Let's take our most talented youngsters in dance and vocal and create an elite troupe that would not only perform at the flagship Palmaro Clubhouse and at Bronx venues, but tour widely in the region and nation. It would be a genuine professional arts experience, even for the youngest club members. There would be annual auditions to make the company, and frequent required rehearsals.
K-Company performs a "Salute to America" at half time for the New Jersey Nets in 2007. The fifteen minute program of patriotic numbers included Andrews Sisters' WWII classic "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy," Latin and Jazz numbers.
Over the years many have helped K-Company, and none more than Goya Foods and Community Relations Director Rafael Toro. In 1995 Mr. Toro put K-Company in the famed 5th Avenue Puerto Rican Day Parade, and K-Company has performed and marched every year since. With Goya support K-Company has performed at Latin celebrations in Penn's Landing, PA, New Jersey, Boston, and for the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies. A very special performance was for the employees of a Goya manufacturing plant in Puerto Rico on K-Company's second Puerto Rico tour, funded in part by Goya.

program of the year at national conference In accepting the 1991 award there was no tradition of winning groups going to the conference to perform and accept their award in person. It was Harold who asked the national organization for the opportunity to perform. BGCA said yes and then Harold, his young charges (and their families!) learned a life lesson: Often you have to fundraise to make great things happen – both Kips Bay and BGCA helped with cost, but the troupe had to raise a substantial amount to send the 55-member K-Company to Washington. Over the years K-Company toured widely: To Disney World for their 25th anniversary, to BGCA conferences; to Niagara Falls, Canada and Toronto; to the Midwest at the invitation of Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago; to Rhode Island and New Hampshire and Boston; and to as many street fairs here in the Bronx as we could.

In 1991 a Boys & Girls Club basketball team from Puerto Rico came to Kips Bay to participate in a basketball tournament. We acted as hosts, with the team lodging in the Clubhouse. The next year K-Company happily accepted an invitation from our guests in Puerto Rico to visit and tour the island. The troupe performed in historic Plaza de Armas in Old San Juan and the towns of Arroyo and Farjado. Company members had written to grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins -- many of whom they had never met – who came to the performances. The hugs and joy of those reunions are among the most satisfying memories of Harold's career.

A PASSION FOR THE ARTS While the arts are for the many at Kips Bay, a good number of gifted youngsters have had extraordinary experiences and/or gone on to outstanding careers in the arts. For example, 13-year-olds Alberto Cruz and Clarence Leggett played the title and a leading role respectively in Oliver at the renowned George Street Theater in New Brunswick, NJ. Eight-year-old Sean Leggett played Young Simba in The Lion King on Broadway. Twelve-year-old dancer/ vocalist Jocelyn Quiroz won the first annual "Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream Award," presented by the baseball legend himself. Consider the exceptional experiences of our Choir. These 30 youngsters have performed with the legendary Gladys Knight at the Beacon Theater, for Mayor Bloomberg, and at a packed Yankee Stadium twice including on April 15, 2014 in honor of Jackie Robinson and Nelson Mandela.
December 2002. Arts program alumnus Jennifer Lopez, posing here with Harold Maldonado and K-Company members, returned for a live "Today Show" premier of "Jenny from the Block."
Alumna Erica Strubbe, Brett Sturgis, Lorraine Munoz and Veronica Vasquez are just a few who continue to pursue professional careers in the arts. Julliard graduate Erica Strubbe has returned to Kips Bay to lead the performing arts Program. Choreographer and Broadway dancer Brett Sturgis, as this is written, is completing rehearsals with current performing arts youngsters on a revue he has created for our 100th anniversary celebrations. Lorraine Munoz continues to perform with the group "Cover Girls," and recording artist Veronica Vasquez was co-producer/director of our 2013 production of "In the Heights."
In 2008 we celebrated 25 years of the performing arts at Kips Bay. Alumnus Kerry Washington couldn’t be with us because she was filming "The Last King of Scotland" on location in Africa. But she recorded a message that was played at the event.

Summer 1969. Newly hired junior staff member Harold Maldonado, Jr. wearing his first staff shirt.
In reflecting back to 1969, it seems like it was only yesterday when I walked through the doors of Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club. My first thought was "this is a kind of a cool place for a teen." Early on I had a life-altering experience. I embraced the Boys & Girls Club code, inscribed on the back of my membership card, as my guide for life. The code read: I believe in God and the right to worship in my own faith and religion, I believe in the Bill of Rights and the Constitution of the United States, I believe in fair play, honesty, and sportsmanship, I believe in my Boys & Girls Club which stands for all these things. It is an honor to continue to work with the best club members, staff and parents in the Boys & Girls Clubs of America national network. I am forever grateful. Harold Maldonado, Jr. March 2015

Established in 1978, Clive Christian is credited with the creation of the statement luxury kitchen. His use of classical architectural elements and introduction of large marble islands over which hung crystal chandeliers transformed the kitchen into a grand space for entertaining and for family life at the heart of every luxury home. Today, Classical or Contemporary panelling take the Clive Christian style seamlessly from statement luxury kitchen throughout every room in the home, from dining room to dressing room, breathing an air of harmony through the interiors of luxury homes and estates worldwide. All Clive Christian cabinetry, panelling and furniture is truly made by hand in England using managed resources under the company philosophy that “our environment is our children’s environment”. The centre of excellence in our company owned factory workshops focus on 300 year old skill sets synonymous with Great British craftsmanship such as marquetry, wood carving, metal inlays and polished burr veneers allowing us to design heirloom residences that will be passed down to future generations. In 2012 HM Queen Elizabeth II granted Clive Christian an OBE for his services to British Luxury Design.

THE DECORATORS CLUB CELEBRATES 100 YEARS 1910s “I am going in now for interior decoration. By that I mean supplying objets d’art and giving advice regarding the decoration of their houses to wealthy persons who do not have the time, inclination, nor culture to do such work for themselves. It is nothing new. Women have done the same thing before.” Elsie de Wolfe, honorary member In June 1914, Archduke Ferdinand of Austria is shot and World War I begins. Months later The Decorators Club forms by “a few young New York decorators” who meet at a weekly tea at Gertrude Gheen’s “little white house” to sew for the Red Cross. They will soon raise funds with the proceeds from a charity fair where they sell pillows and other furnishings to donate an ambulance, inscribed “Gift of the Decorators Club.”
1960s “A designer must always ask himself ‘what is it for–and why?’” Dorothy Liebes Committed to supporting interior design education, the club awards its first scholarship. Later that decade, the club embraces the preservation movement by adopting the Old Merchant’s House, an 1832 house museum. Over the next twenty years, the DC ensures its survival. 1970s “I failed arithmetic at school but I have a good business head. And that is very important. As I say in my little talk, we’ve never been sued and we’ve never sued anybody. And we’ve always collected.” Betty Sherrill In 1977, the club visits China and is the second group of American women to visit the country since it re-opened in 1971. Nineteen members made the sixteen day trip, after pursuing language lessons and learning Tai Chi. 1980s “The decorator has the ability to visualize a finished room before it is begun. It is the strength of character not to deviate from a plan, no matter what the opinion of loving friends and relatives.’’ Melanie Kahane Kahane and fellow DC member Barbara D’Arcy are charter members of Interior Design magazine’s Hall of Fame. In 1984, the club joins the Interior Designer for Legislation in New York coalition, founded to define and promote interior design as a licensed, recognized, legal profession in New York State.
1920s “The final judgment isn’t the logic of the mind, but the logic of the eye.” Ruby Ross Wood
1990s “I love the visual energy that comes from the imperfect, the unexpected. People sometimes think designers create fairy tales, but we give them something that’s much more sincere. We don’t live in fairy tales.” Victoria Hagan
In 1927, Wood along with other DC members including Nancy McClelland, Rose Cumming, and Diane Tate and Marian Hall hold the first showhouse ever, a photographic display of their work with the intention of enhancing the prestige and understanding of the decorating profession itself.
In 1991, the club’s biennial Jacqueline Beymer Lecture Series is founded. All proceeds benefit The Decorators Club Education Fund, Inc., which sponsors an annual portfolio competition for undergraduate students and awards monetary grants.
1930s Furthering the professionalization of interior design, the club drafts and publishes the first standard contracts between decorators and clients in 1931. The New York Times comments: “A most notable step toward establishing more businesslike practices in the profession of interior decorating has been taken by The Decorators Club…” The same year the American Institute of Decorators, the precursor to ASID, is founded. Ten years later, DC member Nancy McClelland is their first female president.
2000s “If you love something, it will work. That’s the only real rule.” Bunny Williams Williams is one of the club’s many authors, including Leslie Banker, Lady Henrietta Spencer Churchill, Elissa Cullman, Murray Douglas, Emily Evans Eerdmans, Carolyn Englefield, Anne Fairfax, Maureen Footer, Mariette Himes Gomez, Victoria Hagan, Amy Lau, Pauline Metcalf, Charlotte Moss, Amanda Nesbitt, Jennifer Post, Suzanne Rheinstein, Katie Ridder and Stephanie Stokes.
1940s “Simplicity requires forthright grace. Honesty implies selection of quality materials and the proper use of them. The harmony of these two factors will result in tranquility and aesthetic enjoyment.” Jean-Michel Frank implores the club in 1940, after they tracked him down in South America and brought him to NY to lecture. Walter Gropius also speaks to the club that year.
At the end of the century, 13,500 interior designers have been certified and certification laws are in effect in 19 states, plus Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, and in eight provinces in Canada.
During World War II, a Federal law is passed restricting the spending of more than $200 on construction or remodeling unless for defense purposes. This impacts the decorating profession tremendously. In 1942, The Decorators Club Clinic is founded, offering advice at an hourly rate of $5. Some clinic suggestions during lean wartime are to dye wool carpets and bleach dark wood to update outmoded designs.
In 2014, the Decorators Club celebrated its centennial anniversary. Over the past 100 years, the club has dedicated itself to excellence and professionalism in the industry, from promoting legislation to design education. As we look forward to the future, we stand committed to championing the highest standards within the design industry.
1950s “I came along in that lovely ladies’ era of decorating and just before all the talented men began emerging in the field,” Elisabeth Draper, who as President Dwight Eisenhower’s decorator, arranged a private tour for the club of the President’s residence as well as Blair House, the presidential guest quarters.
Today “There are two things that make a room timeless: a sense of history and a piece of the future.” Charlotte Moss
