“I have worked two jobs for most of my life. I retired from one, but with no health benefits. So, I really need the health benefits from 1199.”
SOUTHAMPTON HOSPITAL I am a proud 1199 member/delegate. What does the union mean to me? It means us sticking together as one. Being in a union makes you feel safe as a worker. It helps you build confidence, stay strong and stand up for what is right. I also love the 1199 National Benefit Fund. —Dominique Roberts, cook I’ve been here for two and a half years and this is my first job in a union shop. I was a little bit nervous at first about what the dues would be and how the union would affect my career and my life. But the amount I pay for dues is minimal compared to what I get, like: my pension, my health care, benefits for my kids, including camp and child care. I’m getting ready to go back to school to get my Master’s degree and to know that the cost is covered is a huge weight off my shoulders.—Janine Bassi medical laboratory technologist As a single mother, being part of the union has helped me financially, medically and mentally. The child care fund has helped by sending my child to daycare without worrying about not being able to afford it. Myself and my son are fully covered by health insurance without it costing most of my paycheck. I am also starting college this summer because the union is paying for it. —Virginia Schapiro I have found that 1199SEIU is a union that truly cares about and stands by the rights of their members. Fair wages and excellent health coverage are just a small part of the many benefits of working together and standing united. —Linda Bullock I’m so proud to be part of the 1199 family, especially during such a time of uncertainty. United we stand, divided we fall! —Lydia Bonner
“Step up to the plate and don’t let management put fear in your heart.”

BRANDON PRESTON Chef - Silvercrest Center
“Our employer has tried to replace long term workers who have 40 years or more on the job with agency workers. It is 1199 that has come forward and protected our jobs.”
MAUREEN GILL Recreation Therapist Cold Spring Hills “I love what we stand for in 1199. As a nurse, I love to care for and help people. So being part of an organization that does this daily makes me feel great.”

JOIN US! Dear Coworkers, We are excited that you are voting to have the opportunity to join us in 1199SEIU. It’s great to see that all around the hospital we are coming together to make improvements for ourselves and our patients. We understand that management is putting a lot of pressure on you, as you begin to build solidarity and work towards forming a union. Throughout our campaign, management tried to divide us too by using lies, threats and promises that they would change their ways. We asked ourselves, why are they fighting so hard? In the end, we realized that management is scared…even more so since we voted to join 1199. They don’t want to share the decision-making or resources with staff at the hospital, and they know that if more of us form a union, they will have to negotiate with all of us. It’s the law! Before our election, many of us spoke to 1199 members in other Long Island hospitals and we saw how much better they have it in terms of pay and benefits. We urge you to stick together. Don’t let management intimidate or scare you. It’ll be worth it for you, just like it has been for us. If you vote yes for 1199, we will be able to help each other negotiate conditions that will make us all more effective for our patients, our families and the entire healthcare industry throughout Long Island. As you build your strength, never forget that you have the support of your sisters and brothers in the union family—right here in Brookhaven—and throughout Long Island. Right now, we’re proud to have a seat at the table to negotiate improvements to our pay and working conditions. We all know that if you don’t have a seat at the table, you’re liable to be on the menu! In Unity, 1199 Brookhaven Technical workers negotiating committee
