UKULELES BRING A SMILE TO THE COMMUNITY The Summer Strum Festival, curated by Wirral Ukulele Orchestra, is back for its third year and promises to be bigger and better than ever. This year bands from as far away as Sweden will congregate at Hoylake Rugby Club to entertain for free in the name of the ukulele! The underlying ethos of the festival is to promote wellbeing in the community. Everybody is encouraged to pick up an instrument, to talk to ukulele players – and just maybe be inspired to join a group and discover the feel-good factor of the ukulele. Thanks to fundraising endeavours by the ukulele community and the generosity of local businesses (notably Handy Scaff who provide and sponsor the main stage) the festival remains free to enter and promises something for all the family. As well as two music stages there is camping, storytelling, face painting, food and merchandise stalls, space hoppers, great beer, workshops and more. The event takes place on 8th & 9th July at Hoylake Rugby Club, Carham Road, Hoylake. For more information, visit: www.summerstrum.com.

Produced over half a century ago by pupils of The Birkenhead Institute, it contains original poems by the boys from the viewpoint of the mid-1960s, some 47 years after the great war poet composed his iconic verse. Owen attended the Institute from 1900 to 1907. He often cited his education in Birkenhead as the seed of his early attempts at verse. The poems contributed to the special edition of the school’s monthly magazine entitled The Advisor, strongly reflect Wilfred’s own anti-war stance, whilst movingly reflecting the loss of men’s lives in wars following WW1, which was described at the time to be ‘the war to end all wars’. Owen’s sentiments in his classic Futility are reflected at the time by a young pupil in his poem The Pity Of War in the lines, “But why the need for war? It settles nought, Just cemeteries from fields where men fought.” Dramatically, exactly a century ago this month, Wilfred Owen was diagnosed with shellshock and sent to Craiglockhart War Hospital in Edinburgh, where he met his own poetic hero Siegfried Sassoon, who assisted Wilfred with his greatest poems, including Anthem For Doomed Youth and Dulce Et Decorum Est. The very rare school magazine has been donated to The Wilfred Owen Story Museum by the family of a former master at the school at the time of its publication. To view more, visit The Wilfred Owen Story, 34 Argyle Street, Birkenhead, CH41 6AE. Open Tuesday to Friday – 11am to 2pm Admission is Free. For more information, call 07539 371925. wirrallife.com 7

A unique “East Meets West” exhibition by local artist Sushil Kumar Datta is now underway at the Williamson Art Gallery in Birkenhead. The exhibition by the former textile designer looks at his early days in India, his journey to the UK and his career as a creator of fabrics and wallpapers for various major companies. In the period featured - the late 1960s and 1970s - people were turning to India for inspiration in art and patterns from the country were all the rage. Sush was one of the vanguard designers who carried that forward, arriving in London in 1963. The vivid colours of his work and the swirling intricacy of the designs are a bright reminder of the boldness of that period. The exhibition, which runs until July 2, demonstrates Sush’s joy in bringing the best of Indian style to the West. 79-year-old Sush, who went on to teach in Bolton and Bradford, has previously had exhibitions in London including at the Design Centre and the INPRINT show organised by ICI and the Textile Council. Sush, who has two children and three grandchildren, lives near the Williamson Gallery with his wife. He is also a qualified yoga teacher.

IN BRIEF ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE: A CONCERT FOR PEACE

HISTORIC JOHN LENNON MEMORABILIA UNVEILED IN LIVERPOOL

A fantastic concert will be coming to the Floral Pavilion in New Brighton on Thursday 22nd June to bring together our community in peace, and to raise money for Doctors Without Borders, a charity which sends brave healthcare professionals into areas of conflict to help the world’s most vulnerable people.

Fifty years on from the UK release of The Beatles’ hit Strawberry Fields Forever, the iconic, original red gates from The Salvation Army’s children’s home have returned to Liverpool and are now on public display at the award-winning ‘The Beatles Story’ visitor attraction.

It takes place exactly 50 years to the week since The Beatles recorded the single ‘All You Need is Love’ and features school children from across Wirral along with some special guest artists. School choirs involved are: BHSA Juniors and Seniors, Bidston Avenue Primary, Brookdale Primary, St Bridgets’ Primary, and Wirral Grammar Boys’. Special guests will be Merseyside pop legends ‘The Christians’, Britain’s Got Talent finalists ‘Richard and Adam’, local acoustic duo ‘Two Black Sheep’, and show choir ‘Over the Water’ who are about to feature on BBC1’s new Saturday night show ‘Pitch Battle’. Radio City 2’s Claire Simmo will be presenting at the event, bringing the whole show together. The concert will also showcase some fantastic dancers and a string section will be backing many of the acts - it is guaranteed to be a really special occasion. The finale of the concert will be a performance of ‘All You Need is Love’ by all the artists and choirs, and will feature a slide show of photographs of people from around the world holding signs displaying the name of the song. This idea has really taken off on social media, and has helped create a real buzz about the concert. Check out the Twitter feed @concert4peace_ to see all the pictures. Amy Chalmers, the organiser said ‘In light of recent events in Manchester, it seems that now more than ever, we need to bring communities together in peace, showing that there is far more love and goodwill in the world than there is hate. The young people I work with feel helpless and unable to make a difference and my aim was to encourage them to channel their energy into doing something positive.’ Tickets are available from the venue’s box office on 0151 666 0000 or via www.floralpavilion.com.

Following the legendary success of the song, written by John Lennon, the gates to the Strawberry Field site in Woolton became a point of pilgrimage for thousands of Beatles fans from around the world, until they were taken into protective storage in 2011. For the past six years, replica gates have stood at the Beaconsfield Road entrance. Strawberry Field holds a special place in the history of The Beatles, with John’s experiences in and around the children’s home providing inspiration for the unforgettable song. He grew up with his aunt Mimi just a stone’s throw away from the site, and was said to find peace and refuge in the grounds. The gates display forms part of the church and charity’s fundraising plans to redevelop the iconic Strawberry Field site, which closed in 2005, as local authorities changed the model of care and children were placed in foster or adoptive care. Earlier this year, The Salvation Army unveiled their inspiring new vision for the site, which will include a training and work placement hub for young people with learning disabilities and a new authentic exhibition on John Lennon’s early life around Strawberry Field, as well as a haven for spiritual reflection. The vision weaves together educational, cultural, heritage and spiritual exploration in one bold imaginative plan. The original gates loaned by The Salvation Army to The Beatles Story, Liverpool, will join a wealth of other Fab Four memorabilia for a limited time only. Visitors that wish to support the redevelopment of the Strawberry Field site will be invited to make a donation. To find out more about the iconic gates visit beatlesstory.com. New team: Sandra Flynn, Julie Watkinson and Kate Rossiter.

NEW DIRECTOR SPEARHEADS RECRUITMENT DRIVE AT TOP WIRRAL PRIVATE HOSPITAL A newly-appointed hospital director has launched a major recruitment and training drive as part of a £1.1 million investment programme. The private Spire Murrayfield Hospital at Heswall is aiming to take on new experienced healthcare staff and has already developed a training and apprenticeship programme which will be led by the new director, Julie Watkinson. Julie has also been joined on the top team by two more key appointments, new Matron Sandra Flynn and new acting-Theatre Manager Kate Rossiter. Julie will head up the latest phase in the hospital’s development programme which has seen it spend £850,000 on an advanced MRI scanner and £330,000 on a new day care centre. Julie, a 51-year-old, mother of one, who lists bell-ringing as a hobby and lives in Halewood with her partner, has spent most of her career in the NHS after going into nursing at 18. She wants to strengthen the hospital’s links with the local community and to increase the availability of jobs and training for local people. She said: “I’m passionate about education and have a post-graduate qualification to prove it and I believe it’s vital that we grow and develop our own staff as part of our succession planning.” The new Matron, Sandra, 52, a mother of two from Sefton Park, Liverpool, began her career as an auxiliary nurse at Mossley Hill Hospital in the 1980s and trained at Walton and Fazakerley Hospital. Her career includes working at Liverpool

Women’s Hospital and Arrowe Park Hospital where she was Matron for five years before leaving the NHS to care for her husband, Dave, who is now in remission after suffering from lymphatic cancer. She returned to nursing as Matron of Spire Liverpool and she said: “I like the fact that in the private sector you are not limited to a speciality and can work in all sorts of nursing disciplines.” Kate Rossiter, 35, from Heswall, also married with two children, is the hospital’s new acting-Theatre Manager after training as an Operating Theatre Practitioner at Whiston Hospital and working at Spire Liverpool Hospital. She said: “I was working in the pharmacy at the Royal Liverpool Hospital and was just very interested in the operating theatres and they told me about the course in Operating Department Practice at Whiston. I really loved it. It was even better than I’d thought with assisting the anaesthetist, working as a scrub nurse and helping with recovery and I got involved with all the areas and that’s what I like about Spire, I can use all my skills rather than specialising. We’ve got three theatres here and in one theatre you can do three different types of surgery in the same day. It’s a very different healthcare economy here compared to Liverpool which is much more multi-cultural and densely populated. It is a lovely place to work and we’re very much an extended family and that’s true of the Spire organisation because even if we can’t provide a particular service here our Spire family will be able to at one of our sister hospitals.”

HISTORY OF THE ACROSS MERSEY SWIM With the first swim across the Mersey recorded in 1863, Tri 4 Life’s founder, Liam Hanlon, takes us through the history of ‘The Across Mersey Swim’, its swimmers, supporters and challenges it faces today.

Anyone familiar with the Wirral Peninsular and the iconic views of the Liverpool skyline will relate to the mystic allure of the mighty River Mersey. An ever changing mural of activity that has shaped this great city and surrounding areas for many centuries. People can relate to the city and the river for many diverse reasons. For a select few however, the river itself has provoked a certain desire since the first recorded successful swim across the Mersey in 1863 and swimmers from every generation since have faced the same challenge against an ever changing tide of bureaucracy. The first recorded ‘Across Mersey Swim’ was organised by John Hulley (The Forgotten Man of British Olympic History) as part of the Grand Liverpool Olympic Festival in 1863. The swim attracted nine swimmers, with thousands of spectators watching the swim from both sides of the river. Only two managed to finish, had swum over five miles and were in the water for nearly two hours. The ‘Across Mersey Swim’ and the Grand National were the top two major events in Liverpool that year and attracted thousands of spectators at both events. Captain Webb first swam across the Mersey in 1876 - the year after he became the first person to swim the English Channel solo. The swim then became an annual event for the next 62 years and was only stopped with the advent of WWII in 1938. It was following this period that local swimming legend Jimmy Tinsley became the first person on Merseyside to successfully

swim the English Channel in 1987, and swimmers from both sides of the river began looking to renew the tradition of the ‘Across Mersey Swim’. Merseyside Police for many years swam with the tide from Seacombe to New Brighton. The post war ‘Across Mersey Swim’ was started in 1994 by Jimmy Tinsley, Bob Jones and Robin Baynes following their successful English Channel Relay Swim, as members of the City of Liverpool Swimming Club (Cold Water Section). Both swims were in memory of Barbara Marshall (Robin’s sister in law) raising £35,000 for the Royal Liverpool University Hospital (RLUH) ‘Forget me not Cancer Appeal’. In the first year, the swim was started on a low tide with all swimmers ending up in Garston Docks, swimming seven and a half miles instead of the anticipated one and half miles from Rock Park to Britannia Pub. In 1997, the swim was supported by The King and Queen of the Channel, Mike Read and Allison Streeter, who have swam the English Channel successfully over 50 times between them. Unfortunately, the swim was cancelled at the last minute due to the atrocious weather conditions. An alternative swim of three laps of the Albert Dock was organised by Jimmy Tinsley from City of Liverpool SC. The winner that year was Graeme Gunn from Northern Ireland. The following year Robin Baynes, Jimmy Tinsley and Bob Jones were invited to a meeting with North West Water (NWW), who provided sponsorship for the swim for the following three years. The monies raised were divided equally between BMMF wirrallife.com 15

and Water Aid, the Charity NWW support. Due to this success, NWW continued funding the swim for six years until 1999 with many swimmers raising tens of thousands of pounds for the charities they supported by swimming the mighty Mersey. The 1998 and 1999 swim was won by Liverpool swimmer Dave Parry, brother of olympic swimmer Steve Parry. In the year 2000, the River Mersey Basin sponsored the swim. The River Mersey was now getting world wide acclaim for being a clean river attracting an abundance of wildlife with fish, seals, birds and even six small octopus’ being released into the river. Press cuttings, videos and photographs of previous year’s swims were sent to the Director of The River Basin Campaign who presented a lecture in Brisbane Australia, as the Australians did not believe the Mersey was clean enough to swim. In 2000, Jimmy Tinsley was runner up to Dave Reason from Howebridge Marlins, Bolton. The 2001 swim was cancelled in memory of Kenny O’Toole who died suddenly from heart failure (1946-2001). Kenny had been part of the six man English Channel Relay Swim Team and had also swam the Mersey many times, finishing third one year. With many stories of epic swims, individual challenges and a growing legacy, the swim became a self funded event from 2002 now relying on swim entry fees to support the event. In 2001, Robin was asked to write an article on the Post War Across River Mersey Swim for a book called ‘Played in Liverpool’ by Ray Physick. The front cover showed the start of the 1937 Across Mersey Swim, with swimmers diving in to the River Mersey from the side of a boat called the Skirmisher. In 2002, Robin Baynes founded the charity Liverpool Heartbeat and provided a new trophy for the Across Mersey Swim in memory of Kenny ‘Dipper’ O’Toole. The first swimmer to have his name on the new Trophy was Neville Barton. It was during an open water swimming session at the salt house dock in 2002 that I first learnt about this iconic swim and met Jim Tinsley for the first time. The newly formed tri-4-life team were preparing for their 2006 European Challenge that would include two seven man English Channel relay teams. From that introduction Robin Baynes, Jimmy Tinsley and Bob Jones became lifelong friends, supporters and tri-4-life team members. The 2003 Across Mersey swim saw the 14 members of the tri16 wirrallife.com

4-life team attempt the crossing for the second time with three generations of the Hanlon family taking to the water, with the young Ryan Hanlon, 14, being hauled out after forty minutes due to hypothermia. The winner of the swim was Richard Kay. In 2004, another young swimmer, Mike Searle, 17, won the Across Mersey Swim in a record time of (17 minutes 22 seconds) - a record that still stands today. In 2005, the swim was cancelled due to Power Boat Racing on the River Mersey taking place on the same day, so an alternative swim was arranged from Seacombe to New Brighton. The City of Liverpool swimming club also featured with its first junior channel relay team. Steve Wall was the winner that year. The 2006 Swim was cancelled through lack of safety cover. In the following three years 2007, 2008 & 2009, the swim was won by Matt Webster, and following his third year of winning the Across Mersey Swim, Matt received a special award in recognition of his three wins. Nicholas Robinson was the first to swim using the butterfly stroke in 2007 and two years later, Joe Coy also did the same. With the continued success of the swim, Liverpool Heartbeat, tri-4-life, City of Liverpool swimming club and Merseytri with the support of all Merseyside dive clubs, canoe clubs and local Mersey fisherman boats were coming under increased bureaucratic pressures from the local council and port authorities that wanted increased documentation and insurances to legitimise the swim as an ‘event’. By the very nature and adventure aspect of the swim this would always prove difficult. As a volunteer extreme and adventure event organiser, it was always my intention to keep the swim open and accessible to as many deserving participants as possible. Whilst every precaution and consideration for safety would be given, the element of risk would always remain an attraction and challenge of the swim, with swimmers raising funds for their chosen charity instead of the numerous invented commercial enterprises looking for profit. In order to meet National Governing Body requirements for insurance cover, a run was added at the end of the 2010 and 2011 swims to form ‘The John Hulley Across Mersey

Aquathlon’. The trophy was donated by Liverpool Heartbeat Charity. The winner of both 2010 and 2011 events was a young Spanish boy, Jullio Novarro Lopez, who at the time was attending Liverpool College studying English. Permission was sought from his guardians and college for him to enter the event. With a growing junior interest in the Across Mersey Swim, 2011 again saw three generations of the Hanlon family take to the waves. It was a proud day for me to swim alongside my dad, uncle, brothers, cousins, friends and my daughters, Kiera Rose, 13, and her younger sister Caitlin Rae, 11, became the youngest ever swimmer to successfully swim the mighty Mersey. This achievement overshadowed some other great performances that day, including the youngest male swimmer to make a successful crossing, 14 years old Tom Roberts. In 2012, the year that saw London host the Olympic Games, Liverpool Heartbeat hosted the John Hulley Liverpool Olympic Festival, involving over 30 sporting events for young people, including the Across Mersey Swim. The winner in 2012 was Gary Munsey. 2013 saw the highest number of entries; with 86 carefully selected swimmers start the swim, and 84 reaching the finish making it the most successful swim in its history. The Across Mersey Swim was won by Alan Wolfarth for the second time. Alan’s other win was in 2011 but he did not complete the Aquathlon and swimmer Joe Kerrigann, 77, became the oldest swimmer to complete the crossing. We also had a number of disabled swimmers successfully completing the swim. The tri-4-life team also featured again in 2013 in preparation for their upcoming Arch to Arc challenge. This time with a single six man Channel relay team. The swim was also taking on a real family feeling with a number of father & son and dad & daughter combinations. Brian & Charlotte Henners, Dave & Georgia Roberts, Dave & Phil Walton, Paul & John Thelwell and an array of Hanlon family combinations. The swim was cancelled in 2014 due to lack of safety cover. Pressure from Liverpool City Council and changes to its Health and Safety Policy created changes that would impact the future format of the swim. An alternative swim was arranged in the Queens Dock for 2014. The voluntary

attendance we had enjoyed from the canoeing community were prevented from taking part by their National Governing Body ruling, who stated that the insurance cover of any volunteer supporting the swim would be deemed invalid. Without the canoe clubs to help with safety cover, the 2015 Across Mersey Swim was reformatted to be swum in pods, supported by Kevin Gerrard and the RHIB crews of the Diving Clubs of Liverpool, Ormskirk, Southport and Shrewsbury. 5 pods, with 6 swimmers of equal ability in each pod. Different coloured swim hats were worn to distinguish the pods from one another.

W L

2015 also saw the Across Mersey Swim included as a major section of the BBC 1 documentary SEA CITIES Liverpool. This presented a real insight into the challenges and factors that affect the swim, the motivation and mind-set of the swimmers and why the mighty Mersey remains an unpredictable swimming enigma. Top female swimmer Zoe Brunton was first to reach Monks Ferry, whilst others were stung by sea bees, suffered hypothermia and caught on the wrong side of the Mersey’s unforgiving tide. Mersey swimming legend Dave Sandman holds the record for the most crossings, having swam ‘The Across Mersey Swim’ 14 times and has been an avid fundraiser swimming for many charities including, Liverpool Heartbeat, Water Aid, New Born Appeal and The British Heart Foundation. And so... as this new chapter of ‘The Across Mersey Swim’ journeys towards its 25th Anniversary creating its own place in our sporting culture and history, Liam Hanlon, Jim Tinsley, Robin Baynes & Bob Jones together with all the supporting elements and safety cover required for a successful swim, will continue to wave the flag and seek support from all parties responsible for the access and safe use of our River to create a legacy for the now infamous ‘Across Mersey Swim’ for generations to come. Since 1863, the mighty Mersey tide has continued to ebb and flow, and swimmers have continued to gaze across the grey waters in awe of this iconic challenge that is The Across Mersey Swim. For further information, contact Liam Hanlon 07966 529133. *Please note that individuals should not attempt to swim the Mersey as it can be dangerous. If you would like to take part in an organised and safe swim, please call Liam. wirrallife.com25 wirrallife.com 17

AN INTERVIEW WITH SIMON NIXON Wirral Life talk to Moneysupermarket.com founder, Simon Nixon on life, his success and his new venture SimonEscapes.com

One of the UK’s richest entrepreneurs, Simon Nixon, founder of Moneysupermarket.com talks to Wirral life in an exclusive interview. Simon went to school in Flint, Wales and lived in Chester until recently. At the age of 20, he dropped out of his accountancy degree at Nottingham University, and in 1999 co-founded the website MoneySuperMarket.com. In 2016, he sold his last shares in it making him a billionaire. He now runs a travel website, SimonEscapes, which offers his personal collection of luxury holiday homes for private rental. The collection includes luxury homes located in his favourite places: Chipping Campden in the heart of The Cotswolds; Cornwall’s Booby’s Bay; the hillside town of Deia in Mallorca; the shores of Lake Windermere; the Platinum Coast of Barbados and Malibu West Coast USA. You have achieved so much, what has been key to your success? Drive and perseverance which I feel are essential qualities for any entrepreneur to be successful - as you will receive many setbacks! Also, I was lucky to be an ‘outlier’. I was in the right time and the right place to take advantage of the internet boom in early 2000. Before coming up with the idea of Moneysupermarket, did you consider any other business ventures? No, Moneysupermarket was the organic progression of a business I was already running. It was a mortgage sourcing software product which we had developed for mortgage brokers. When the internet took off in the early 2000(s) I made our offering consumer friendly and provided consumers with the online tool to compare the prices of every mortgage in the market.

Why do you think Moneysupermarket was so successful? It was definitely down to being at the right place at the right time - this provided us with first mover advantage. We recruited a high calibre executive team who were great at executing. We were very focused and kept pushing the boundaries by constant innovation. The internet moves at such a pace - if you don’t innovate you are dead. In 2016, you sold your last shares in Moneysupermarket, did you think you had gone as far as you could? Personally I wanted a new challenge. I now head a team of business analysts that effectively help me run my own private hedge fund. We invest in businesses and property in varying sectors and geographies spread all over the world. Simonescapes.com (www.simonescapes.com) is my luxury holiday home rental business and is just a small cog in the overall portfolio. We offer luxury houses in some of the UK’s prime locations including Lake Windermere, Booby’s Bay in Cornwall and Chipping Campden in the Cotswolds. We also have a villa in Deia, Mallorca, two beach houses in Malibu and have just completed our latest project in Barbados opening a stunning five bedroom beach house on the island’s West Coast. Having moved from financial services to the luxury leisure industry with stunning luxury homes in the UK and around the world, do you intend to extend your property portfolio and if so, where will your next acquisition be? We have grown the portfolio rapidly over the last few years and are now pausing for breath. Our Barbados and Malibu properties have all opened in the last 12 months! Have you had any famous or notable persons stay at your luxury homes? Many premiership footballers, tennis players and TV celebrities have stayed in our properties. Celebrity chefs have filmed their shows from our kitchens to capture the sea or lake views! They book with us as they like to retain their privacy, so we don’t like to mention names.

SIMONESCAPES.COM - BARBADOS

Who are your most inspirational business icons? It used to be people like Richard Branson. Now it’s more Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Larry Page. These are also all outliers - in that they were in the right place at the right time. However, they have built world conquering businesses in the space of very few years. The scary thing is these businesses, although now giants, were just start-ups at the beginning. You declined an invitation to be a Dragon on the Dragon’s Den TV programme, why was that? I just declined an audition a few years ago. It was too much of a commitment at that time. What is your opinion of Brexit? Like many entrepreneurs we like to be in control of our destiny. My fundamental issue with being part of the European Union is that the rules and regulations have to fit so many diverse countries with vastly differing economies and cultures. How could this be optimal for the UK? As the second largest economy in Europe, I think we can be more nimble and entrepreneurial if we are in charge of our own destiny - obviously we want to maintain close ties to Europe - we need each other for trade! Your normal routine includes a lot of travel and you are known to use budget airlines, private jets and helicopters. Do you enjoy the actual journey and what is your favourite way to travel? I don’t like travel - it’s tiring, but it’s worth it to reach my favourite destinations. I spend most of my time in California, Mallorca, Jersey and three months in London. It’s a good combination - they complement each other well. Do you still own your home in Chester? I didn’t keep my home in Chester, I just wasn’t able to use it enough. When home I prefer to stay with family there. When you’re in Chester, do you like to eat in or out? We always eat out in Chester and there are some great new restaurants like The Chefs Table, Sticky Walnut and Joseph Benjamins. 20 wirrallife.com

Have you ever spent any time on the Wirral, what do you think of it? I haven’t spent a lot of time on the Wirral but I think it’s beautiful - especially around Parkgate and Caldy. Maintaining a healthy life-style is important to you. Do you have a strict fitness routine? My fitness regime is dictated by where I am. In LA its beach walks and lots of yoga. In the UK and Jersey its more tennis, racket ball, Pilates and country/beach walks. Apart from your luxury homes, what’s your most expensive purchase? A Porsche 918. But I am told it has risen $500,000 since I bought it a few years ago. Do you collect anything? I collect art, I’m becoming more and more of an avid collector. I also collect watches but I’ve not made any additions for a while. I used to collect fine wine but I stopped drinking 3 years ago. What is your guilty pleasure? I sometimes watch box sets that I stream. I recently enjoyed Big Little Lies! I will also occasionally eat a super high quality pizza in Gjelina, Venice (California) - they are amazing! But only 2 pieces max! When you’re not working what do you like to do to relax? Exercise - mostly everything I’ve already mentioned above plus cycling and paddle boarding in Jersey. Eating in great restaurants, movies, listening to audiobooks. I also love yoga and meditation. I have found these two disciplines a godsend and couldn’t do without them now! What do you hope to be doing in 10 years’ time? I hope to be pretty much doing what I’m doing now - which is whatever I want to do!! THE IMPORTANCE OF CAT GROOMING Anita Richardson, a Master Cat Groomer talks to us about the importance of cat grooming to improve your feline’s health and wellbeing.

Why did you open a cat grooming business? Love Cats Groomer was opened after my Father’s own rescued, longhaired cat, Olly, became badly matted under his belly, armpits and down his hind legs. It was clear to see how uncomfortable these made him feel and the pain he was in when attempting to jump. At the time, I began to search locally for anyone that could help – but to no avail. When asking at the local vets, they mentioned that because Olly was a rescue and we therefore were unaware of his temperament, they would put him under medicinal sedation and then clip him. Would this mean that every time the cat needed grooming he would have to be sedated? Yes, not only would this prove expensive, but traumatic for the cat and owner alike. The mere thought of the sedation endangering Olly’s life was the turning point for me. With that thought stuck profusely in my head, I decided to turn my lifelong love of cats into a profession and immediately set about locating somewhere to train to become a fully qualified cat groomer. Where did you do your training? After some extensive research, I selected the Cat Grooming School which is run by Svetlana Broussnova. Her busy salon is regarded as the number one salon in London. Her vision is to take students on a rigorous and comprehensive journey from first principals through to final outcomes enabling students to reach the highest professional standard. What did the training consist of? I was immediately thrown in at the deep end - handling clients cats that were known to be well behaved. I was shown how to trim the claws, use the grooming tools in order to brush the various different coats through, scissor work, clipper work, bathing and blow drying, and most of all the handling techniques for each cat. Every cat is an individual and therefore what handling techniques work for one does not necessarily work on the next. It was a very intense course and as the weeks passed by, the more temperamental cats were passed to me to groom. Some days the training was quite frightening – being on the receiving end of something that was going to have me for lunch no matter what I tried! However, it was these cats that pulled at my heart strings. They were obviously not used to being handled by their owners and this reflected not only in their behaviour towards me, but in the state of their coats too. Is there a need to groom cats professionally? Yes, Yes, Yes. The majority of people do not understand why cats need grooming regularly. They think that cats can look after themselves. This is kind of true. Our shorthaired breeds do not face the same difficulties as our longhaired breeds. However, some of our shorthaired and the majority of our longhaired breeds have very dense coats and so a regular grooming session helps rid them of any excess coat which may otherwise be 22 wirrallife.com

swallowed and eventually returned as fur balls. It also prevents lots of shedding around the home too. Also, as our cats get elderly or pick up health problems, they tend to groom less. Regular grooming pulls the cats own natural oils through their coat keeping them looking in tip top condition. These oils also help with weatherproofing our outdoor cats from the rain. Grooming also stimulates blood circulation around the body – pretty much like a massage does to us! The cats can find it very relaxing. Clipping the claws also prevents problems with claws overgrowing and piercing the paw pads. All cats shed their claws – outdoor cats find it easier as they have various trees, fence posts etc where they do this. However, our indoor cats tend to use our furniture! This is because they do not have a scratching post tall enough for them to fully stretch out and hang from. This is a common problem in our households. Most homeowners buy tiny scratching posts where the cat cannot stretch up on his hind legs to stretch and shed those claws naturally. Why are we not aware that cat groomers exist? There are very few professional cat groomers in Britain. In fact, I am one of only eight qualified Master Cat Groomers in the UK. Five of those being based in and around London. What are the skills required to a become a cat groomer? The skills required are wide and varied. Not only having the right equipment for the job but understanding the behavioural traits of each individual cat being groomed is a must in order to help them relax. Also, inspiring confidence in the owner that their cat is not being mistreated. Some cats can talk throughout the whole grooming experience, but this doesn’t mean they are being handled incorrectly. It is just a new experience for them. Upon a second or third visit, most cats do actually lie across the table and fully relax throughout the grooming session. What is your vision for the future? I hope to expand my grooming business further with a view to opening my own cat grooming school eventually. My aim is to bring awareness to the public on the importance of looking after our cats through regular grooming. Due to demand from some of my regular clients whom I have built a rapport with, I have just opened Love Cats Sitter which is designed for looking after your cats while you are away on business or holidays in the comfort of their own homes. I will visit your home once or twice a day in order to feed your cat and do any household tasks like turning lights on, drawing curtains, putting waste bins out etc. By leaving your cat at home, they are far less stressed than when being placed in an unfamiliar environment surrounded by strange noises and smells in a cattery. As you can see, I am mad about cats. I am the crazy cat lady – and I’ll be the first to admit it! For more information, contact Anita Richardson on 07870 751581.

W FOOD & DRINK L

IN THE GIN GARDEN BY DAVID GREEN, THE RED FOX

Gin continues to be one of the world’s fastest growing spirits; in fact last year alone, British drinkers consumed the equivalent of 1.12 billion G&T’s. There has never been a better time for new ways to enjoy the spirit, from exploring new brands to trying new garnishes and tonics; there are literally 000’s of options available to you.

BOTANIST – SCOTLAND

PINKSTER – ENGLAND

An exciting and unusual gin from my favourite whisky distillery ‘Bruichladdich’. The Botanist contains no fewer than 31 botanicals, of which 22 are native to Islay itself. A floral gin with a lovely minty freshness at the end. Personally I love this served with plenty of ice, Fever Tree elderflower tonic and a sprig of rosemary.

Pinkster is a British Gin with a lot of character and a lot of raspberries. First launched in July 2013, 5 botanicals are used to create this gin before its hand-steeped in fresh raspberries. This is a gin that has a raspberry twist rather than being a raspberry gin and the berries are actually quite subtle on the nose, while juniper stands its ground with a hint of pepper. Try this with tonic, a raspberry and a sprig of fresh mint.

MALFY – ITALY

MANCHESTER THREE RIVERS – ENGLAND

Made in Turin using lemons grown in Sicily and on the Amalfi coast, as well as botanicals including juniper, coriander, angelica and cassia bark. The result is a refreshing gin with a strong lemon sherbet mouth feel. Try this with some fresh thyme and a Fever Tree tonic, for more of a herbal style, whilst keeping the Mediterranean feel. BRECON GIN – WALES Another gin from a whisky producer - this one from Penderyn Distillery. Using botanicals from the four corners of the world and bottled using mineral water from the Beacons National Park from where the gin takes its name. There is a richness in flavour and a citrus hit that balances out the spices, I get hints of spicy cinnamon, which creates an interesting gin, that I believe lends itself to a simple serve of tonic and lime. 26 wirrallife.com

When we opened The Red Fox in 2014, we had 10 gins on the bar, today we are super proud of our growing collection, which now features over 130 bottles. Following the success of our recent beer festival, we decided it was time to celebrate our gin collection. Over the weekend of 1st & 2nd July we will have a marquee rammed with gin, the BBQ will be fired up and we will have live music and lawn games. No tickets are needed and admission is free. Here is a guide to some of our current favourites gins:

Manchester’s first ever city centre Gin Distillery; launched in 2016 - this is a wellbalanced Premium Gin that is handcrafted in small batches. I would describe this very much as a modern gin, it’s well-balanced with a combination of 11 botanicals with a particularly smooth mouth-feel and a unique sweetness derived from vanilla, cinnamon, almond and oats. Serve with tonic, lots of ice and two fresh cherries for a lovely summery drink. THE RED FOX GIN I can’t finish without a mention of our own gin, which we have made exclusively for us. We came up with a recipe, which created a floral led English gin featuring a special tea infusion and a hint of heather provides a wonderfully smooth finish. We recommend a simple serve of lots of ice, Fever Tree tonic and a slice of lemon.

THE BUTCHERS CUT BY JOHN MUFF

FROM SAUSAGES TO SPIRITS Expanding from its butchery roots into quality homemade ready meals, deli items, bread, vegetables, wine, beer and spirits - Muffs meets all your foodie needs in Bromborough. Originally a butcher’s shop, Muffs of Bromborough has metamorphosed into an Aladdin’s Cave of foodie goodies, with traditional butchery – and the family’s own sausages and black pudding – at its heart. Today, the shop is a food hall selling everything from meat, cheese, bread and vegetables to wines, local beers and gins, plus an extra special selection of made on the premises quality ready meals to cook up at home. There’s a hot meals and sandwiches counter too. John Muff ’s dad, Stephen, and grandfather Jack began the business in Birkenhead before moving to Bromborough in 1974. In 2016, the shop expanded after moving a couple of doors down the street. John said: “We’re now more of a food hall. It’s a much bigger shop. The butcher has some very special items now – value-added products like hunter’s chicken, chorizo chicken, beef wellington

and pork wellington, and marinaded chicken and pork. All hand-made, quality produced ready meals that customers can take home and put in the oven.” John started his career training as a butcher at the family shop, before going to run the factory that supplied the local supermarkets with Muff ’s sausages. Then he trained as a chef and brought all his experience to the food hall, which boasts Muffs’ black pudding and award winning sausages. “We’ve won best in the UK for our Old English sausages,” he said. “There are 20 different varieties and they change quite a bit to keep it interesting. At any one time there are around 12 varieties and they rotate on a daily basis.” The traditional butchery remains at the heart of the business. Muffs’ uses dry ageing fridges to mature and tenderise its beef, which like the majority of its meat is sourced through a slaughterhouse in North Wales that works with local farms. The local ethos is also apparent in the other items the shop stocks, from Wirral Gin to in-season asparagus from local growers. And it’s proving a long-term recipe for success for Muffs.

THE ART SCHOOL by Nicky Rigby-Smith & Si Hall

Wirral Life have eagerly awaited our visit to The Art School. Having attended the recent Liverpool Tourism Awards, where The Art School’s Patron Chef, Paul Askew, was awarded for Outstanding Contribution to Tourism in the Region, the restaurant being recently named by The Sunday Times as one of the top 100 restaurants in the UK and having intently watched Paul on the Great British Menu – we could not wait for this review! With modern, sophisticated and clean décor, The Art School is in a great location, just situated by the Liverpool Philharmonic in the Georgian Quarter of the City. Greeted by Katie, our waitress who was very attentive and knowledgeable about all dishes on the menu - and our sommelier Jitka, who likewise knew everything there is to know about wines… we were seated to our table in the beautifully appointed dining room. A complimentary amuse bouche arrived to excite our palate. Consisting of crème fraiche, cress, chilled asparagus and pea velouté, and served in a teacup. Unexpected and genius. Homemade breads followed served with the creamiest of Jersey butters. Delicious. To begin, we opted for; Warm salad of poached Cheshire duck egg and spring truffle, Twice baked soufflé of local pink tip spinach and Mrs Kirkham’s Lancashire Cheese; and Cornish Red Mullet. The duck egg arrived with Hooton watercress, goats curd, spring truffle and a lightly pickled shallot. Presented beautifully, the duck egg was cooked to perfection and the combination of tastes were outstanding. The spinach dish was served with a Hooton wild garlic & Ormskirk Leek, garlic cress and Dijon cream sauce and a wonderfully light soufflé, sweet and with delicate flavours. Perfect. The Red Mullet with lemon, parsley & brown shrimp risotto, “Pastis” sauce & Morel mushrooms, was a piece of art - this was no ordinary risotto! Carefully constructed with beautiful saffron flavours and the best cooked Red Mullet we have tasted. 30 wirrallife.com

For mains, we ordered; A plate of Callum’s Heswall Galloway beef; Fresh Market Fish of the Day and a plate of Hebridean Hogget. The beef dish was superb. A trio of tongue, cheek & sirloin with turtle beans, oyster, cauliflower, spring vegetables and a natural jus and a horseradish snow – the beef was cooked perfectly, the presentation and depth of flavour was outstanding – first class. We paired this dish with a Domaine Boutinot, a Grenache with jamminess and red berry flavours which worked brilliantly with the rich beef flavours. The fish of the day, which changes daily - was a beautiful John Dory, served with tender stemmed broccoli, new potatoes and a fish stock. Fresh, subtle yet hearty, overall a delight to the palette. The Hebridean Hogget (a dish that is sentimental to Paul) was served four ways: pan roast loin, confit shoulder, sweetbreads and hey roast rump. Accompanied with a natural jus served in a sheep’s horn. Again, oozing with creativity and flavours – this dish showed off Paul’s incredible talent to perfection. Superb! At this point, we were feeling incredibly spoilt and euphoric from our fabulous fine dining experience. As is the norm for Wirral Life, we carried on with desserts... and chose: Crème Brulee of white chocolate; Passion fruit & white chocolate delice and a Yoghurt pannacotta with raspberry foam. A Pre-Dessert was served to refresh our palate. A combination of honeycomb, dehydrated raspberry, pineapple and mango sorbet – scrumptious! Desserts followed and were spectacularly presented – colourful and fun – and they tasted even better! If you’ve not been to The Art School, then you must! Paul is an exemplary Chef and is truly individual - his menu’s are creative, dishes are exquisite, skilfully created and cooked to perfection. To round up… it’s a piece of art! Without any hesitation, we give it five stars… plus! To book, call 0151 230 8600 or visit: theartschoolrestaurant.co.uk.

FREEMASONS AT WISWELL

by Carl Housbey

I try to make sure that my monthly Gastro Grazer column has something for everyone, so sometimes I tell you about a restaurant offering exquisite fine dining, at other times, it’s a neighbourhood Bistro serving delicious comfort food, but this month you’re going to hear about a hidden gem called Freemasons at Wiswell that covers both ends of the spectrum. Freemasons is a stylish and comfortable country pub in the quaint Ribble Valley village of Wiswell. It was originally three small cottages, one of which was a Freemason’s Lodge, hence its name. The stone floors, together with the antique rugs and furniture combine to give you that cosy feeling of being in your own country cottage. The relaxed home from home feeling is reinforced by the lovely warm welcome that you receive from Stevens fiancée Aga and her team, as well as from the friendly locals who may be found chatting by the bar whilst enjoying a pint of traditional cask conditioned ale from a number of award-winning independent breweries. The main reason you are likely to visit is for the food, as Chef Patron Steven Smith and his team use the finest seasonal ingredients available to create some of the most delicious dishes you will have ever tasted. Menus on offer range from traditional Sunday Lunch right through to a full multi-course “Taste of Freemasons” experience. At this time of year typical starters include a soup of English Asparagus with Lancashire Cheese Fondue served with a side of Procter’s Kick Ass Cheddar Hot Dog and Wiltshire Truffle, 32 wirrallife.com

or perhaps Wild Garlic and Pearl Barley Risotto with Roast Lambs Sweetbreads, Broth of Cevennes Onion, and 7-year-old Parmesan. Your main course might be Slow Cooked Belly Pork, Sticky Pigs Cheek and Black Pudding Paul Heathcote style, served with a Baked Sweet Potato, Pork Puff, and Rhubarb Hoi-Sin or how about Poached and Roast Breast of Organic Chicken studded with Black Garlic, Yakitori Livers on Toast, New Season Asparagus and Morels, with Sauce Albufera. If you’ve still got room for dessert you could opt for Rice Pudding baked with Vanilla, served with a Champagne Jelly, and Yorkshire Rhubarb or one of my personal favourites the Amalfi Lemon Meringue Pie inspired by Wiswell Moor. Those of you with a more savoury palate would enjoy the cheese board containing seven different artisan cheeses from around the UK that are served at the perfect ripeness. All this exceptional mouth-watering food is best accompanied by a glass or two of wine from the extensive list of over 250 bins from around the world that have been sourced to specifically match Stevens dishes by Freemasons wine buyer and resident wine expert Miles Corish (MW). I’m sure by now you can’t wait to book a table, but don’t worry you won’t need to roll up a trouser leg or remember any strange handshakes, just pick up the phone and dial 01254 822218 or click on www.freemasonsatwiswell.com To book a table telephone 01704 564199.

WIRRAL CHAMBER CORPORATE CUP 2017

It’s approaching the time of year when businesses get their golf clubs out and tee off for a memorable day of exceptional golf.

5 Star Golfing Holiday in Portugal and UK Championship Golfing Weekend Breaks, together with a full array of Taylormade golf equipment.

Whether for team building, networking or entertaining clients, Wirral Chamber Corporate Cup 2017 promises a day where you can mix business and pleasure.

Additionally, Birkenhead based Bennett Williams Solicitors has sponsored a prize for Nearest the Pin prize, together with Progress to Excellence Group which has sponsored the Longest Drive prize.

In partnership with Wirral Chamber member, PlayFair Events, teams from across the Wirral business region will play on the Heswall Golf Club’s par 72 course on Wednesday 28th June. Teams already participating include leading companies such as Bathgate Business Finance, Digitel Europe, Finsa UK, MaxWeb Solutions, Premier Guarantee, Scantec, Inteb MS, Smylie Ltd, Tipografic, Wabtec Faiveley UK and Whitfield Business Hub. With panoramic views across the Dee Estuary, an official starter will announce each golfer to the tee alongside a film crew and photographers who will be recording the event to capture those special moments and shots. Vpar live scoring will enable golfers to see how other teams are doing during play. A range of prizes for a-hole-in-one on the day include a £30k Lexus CT car (sponsored by Mitchell Group Cheshire Oaks),

Once the day out on the greens has finished, a two-course dinner instigates the evening. Radio City’s Steve Weaver will host the post-golf activities and Roy Evans, former player, manager and legend of Liverpool FC will act as our guest speaker. Roy, who was praised by Bill Shankly at a young age, will treat dinner guests to stories dating back to the famous LFC boot room and how he came to be a key component during Liverpool’s success during the 70’s and 80’s. There are a small number of team places available - the cost to enter a team is £545 +vat (for Wirral Chamber members) and £595+vat (for non-Chamber members). SUMMER STYLES BY ANDREW COLLINGE

THE PURE COLLECTION: SUMMER STYLES BY THE ANDREW COLLINGE CREATIVE TEAM The arrival of the sun can cause havoc on our everyday style, however, striking the perfect balance between chic and comfortable doesn’t have to be difficult this summer. To help clients get the best from their hair, the Andrew Collinge Creative Team recently put together The Pure Collection, a lookbook of styles for Summer 2017. The collection takes inspiration from the looks we’ve seen on the catwalks and presents a selection of modern hairstyles that can easily be replicated at home.

KELSEY • • •

Hair by Andrew Collinge Creative Team Makeup Liz Collinge Photography Alex Barron-Hough

Recent fashion week collections saw a clear shift towards the undone finish and natural texture is enjoying a revival this summer. With this in mind, our stylists worked with the natural texture of the hair, encouraging and enhancing its curl, wave and movement. The collection has been influenced by the 80’s in so much as the hair has been dried more naturally, working with the fingers rather than brushes. FLORENTINA Pastel shades are a key colour trend for summer and each look in the Pure Collection has been complimented with a palette of soft pastel colours, luminous semi-permanents and carefully placed highlights. Florentina’s hair has been coloured with a light peachy-copper shade leaving it with a soft, warm finish. Her short hairstyle was given a multi-textured cut and finish and a soft asymmetric fringe was created. KELSEY For those with naturally curled hair, it’s never been a better time to embrace your curls. Kelsey has natural curls that have been layered and slightly graduated. A styling mousse was then worked through the hair which was finger dried using a diffuser. A gel serum was then applied to define the curl. The colour choice for Kelsey enhances the natural texture of her hair whilst the soft palette of the shades chosen, add a romantic feeling to the finished look.

W DENTISTRY L

THE ‘D’ WORD BY RICHARD GIBSON

RICHARD GIBSON

Richard Gibson, Principal of Wallasey Orthodontics and Consultant to Liverpool University Dental Hospital talks to us about dental hygiene. Last month I extoled the virtues of a consistent and methodical oral hygiene regime for maintaining dental health. Of equal importance, is the fuel you’re putting in to your body, its effect on your teeth and their ability to cope with it. The teeth are continually bathed in saliva which lubricates, but also acts as a medium for storing minerals and maintaining the natural balance (pH) of the mouth. When acid is introduced to the mouth, either through food and drinks or via the breakdown of sugars by plaque bacteria, the natural balance is disturbed and this has a direct effect on the teeth. The crucial minerals contained in the surface layer (enamel) are removed (demineralisation) and deposited in the saliva leaving the tooth softer and more vulnerable to further damage. However, this is a dynamic two-way process and if left these minerals can reintegrate into the enamel (re-mineralisation) – given sufficient time. This is one of the main reasons we recommend that people don’t brush straight after food – as although you are placing fluoride around the teeth the mechanical process removes the minerals. The balance between demin and remin is critical as if it tips in favour of demin then cavities start to appear. This occurs every time you eat – so if you’re constantly snacking on sugary foods or drinks then you are putting your teeth under huge pressure and are much more likely to develop new holes! So how does this information help us with our diets? Well it just so happens that the biggest challenge to our teeth (refined sugars) pose a massive challenge to our general well-being, with consumption being directly linked to obesity – which in turn massively impacts on diabetes, blood pressure, heart disease and some cancers. In an ideal world, we would look to eliminate the added refined sugars present in so many foods and drinks, but in the meantime limiting them to meals is a pretty good start. Looking at drinks first - outside of mealtimes they should be sugar and acid (fizzy) free with water, milk or tea and coffee being the best. Hydration is king and just upping your water intake on its own can have a dramatic impact on your skin, bowels and levels of fatigue. If you are having fizzy or fruit juices with meals 70 wirrallife.com

then using straw at least limits the effect on the teeth as long as you’re not gargling it! When it comes to snacks and hunger pangs – many of us confuse thirst as hunger. The first thing I do when I feel hungry is to have a glass of water, as sitting in heated offices and surgeries really dries you out. If it persists then look at a sugar free option ideally with a higher protein content as this will keep you fuller for longer – nuts, seeds are great for this. If you are having more carbohydrate based snacks then consider following them with some sugar free gum or a small block of cheese – both of which help to raise the pH level of your mouth back to normal much more quickly. From a metabolism point of view, your body works best being fed at regular intervals and does require a combination of food groups including carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals. Ideally, this would be spread over no more 5 food intakes a day - 3 main meals plus 2 sugar free snacks. Top toothy tips: • Keep sugar containing foods to mealtimes – not snacks (food or drink) • Drink water, milk or sugar-free tea and coffee outside of mealtimes • If drinking acidic (fizzy) or sugary drinks use a straw • Follow sugar intakes with sugar-free gum or a piece of cheese • Avoid eating or drinking (except water) an hour prior to bed Simple snack ideas: • Small handful of nuts • Chopped vegetables and hummus • Cottage cheese and crackers • Natural yogurt and fruit • Hard boiled eggs I personally avoid the “D” word because your diet is a way of life and should work for you rather than ruling you. Happy eating!

The Secret Behind a Beautiful Smile Incognito braces are the modern and invisible alternative to conventional braces. Incognito braces are an advanced generation of brace that is hidden discreetly on the back of the teeth, not on the front like conventional ‘train tacks’. This allows people to go about their daily routine without feeling self-conscious because their braces are invisible from the outside. Incognito braces are suitable for all age groups - children, adolescents and adults who want to correct their tooth position. The brace is custom made for each patient to maximise comfort and ensure precise results, this is achieved by using the latest computer technology when creating the brace.

STEP OUT OF THOUGHT BY JOEL JELEN OF RESET BREATHING

“It’s time to step out of thought, be more mindful and live your life” says Joel Jelen, founder of Reset Breathing. How many of us go through life asleep?

and between thinking for practical purposes, by bringing attention into your body and slowing your breathing... through the nose and into your tummy if it wasn’t there already.

I mean how many moments of your life does your attention spend inside your mind?

If you feel each breath as you think, see the difference it makes.

I meet lots of people who admit to me once we begin discussing mindfulness as part of resetting their breathing and life, that they live their life on autopilot. They literally run their lives according to the stuff originating in their minds, according to the thoughts and opinions of those around them. As a breathing educator, I can tell you from experience - mine and many others - that as long as your attention is on observing your breath or on feeling your inner body and senses, you are set free.

When you encounter a problem through the day, think for a short while, then drop the thinking and merge with the inner body. Think for a few minutes then stop thinking. Adopting this will enable you to experience negative emotions less frequently. The more stillness you bring into your life, the less you react and the quicker you overcome situations. By feeling the inner body, you can sense how active the mind is. When you know the effect that e.g. anger has on your body, with this realisation you don’t reinforce it with continuous thinking. You become instinctively aware how harmful this is.

It’s time to step out of thought and live your life. ‘Not feeling angry anymore’ is probably the most empowering feedback people give and receive once they begin to watch their thoughts and emotions on a daily basis. When you begin to observe the interplay between your mind and emotions and how one influences the other, you begin to realise the effect of your thinking. It’s all about bringing your thoughts to the forefront of your mind as opposed to allowing them to carry on unnoticed in the background. This is how you begin to exert more control over your thought processes. It’s like dropping a hot item from your hand... the realisation that your mind determines your happiness becomes total and unquestionable... we call this awareness or mindfulness. Encourage yourself whilst doing anything 72 wirrallife.com

If you like, it’s about understanding the insanity of the human mind and not identifying with each thought as if it was real. Understanding and being aware of the effects of the mind and how it causes anger, hatred, tension and turmoil will automatically enable you to activate that most powerful of mindsets... ‘let it go’. And once you do, you are truly on your way to living with mindfulness and all the benefits that come free with it. Reset Breathing is hosting summer workshops incorporating breathing techniques with mindfulness. Further details from www.resetbreathing.com

ADRIFT ON A SEA OF BILE… A VOYAGE AROUND YOUR GALL BLADDER BY CONOR MAGEE MD FRCS, CONSULTANT SURGEON “Are you sitting comfortably? Then we’ll begin.” And thus generations of children were introduced to the joys of reading with Jackanory. But are you sitting comfortably? Right now in this waiting room or on a platform waiting for a train - are you sitting comfortably? The reason that I ask this question is because I know that many of you will not be comfortable. Many of you will be in pain. And as a surgeon the type of abdominal pain that makes you uncomfortable - makes it difficult to keep still - is known as colic. And the commonest type of colic is biliary colic caused by Gallstones that sit in and irritate the lining of the gallbladder In fact gallstones and the pain they cause is so common that I routinely remove ten of them per week. Come rain or shine there is always a gallbladder that needs removing - in fact it remains a standing joke amongst surgeons that patients in the North West must be growing them again as we seem to be removing so many! But what are gallstones - how do I know I have them, and more importantly what can I do about them? Gallstones form in the gall bladder. The gall bladder is a pear shaped structure organ that sits under the liver. The gallbladder stores bile that dissolves fat from our diet and allows it to be absorbed. Gallstones are the pearls of the human body - they develop from tiny motes in the bile and over the years grow layer upon layer, eventually forming stones which can cause the most exquisite pain! Gallstone pain typically lasts hours and can start soon after eating. The pain sits under the ribcage on the right and can be a like a band squeezing across the top of the abdomen. It is impossible to sit still - many patients describe it as worse than labour pain! And despite the severity of the pain, this is only the milder trouble that gallstones can cause. There are rarer and serious complications such as acute cholecystitis

GALLSTONES needing antibiotics, abscesses and inflammation of the pancreas. The best treatment for gallstones is to remove the gallbladder there are no tablets or injections that can do better. Twenty years ago, removal of the gallbladder (cholecystectomy) required a very big cut across the abdomen and a week in hospital, followed by a good six months to recover fully. Fortunately, today we can perform this procedure using keyhole surgery (laparoscopic cholecystectomy) - and you can be home the very same day as your operation. The operation involves a short general anaesthetic and using four tiny cuts I introduce a camera and special instruments. The operation can be done within an hour if the gallbladder is not badly diseased. I expect my patients to have their operation and be home in time for tea and able to drive to my clinic within two weeks!! But best of all - those awful pains are cured and my patients are so grateful for that. Mr Magee operates at Spire Murrayfield Hospital and can be contacted there. He can be followed on Twitter @mageefrcs. wirrallife.com 73

WIRRAL TIME TRAVEL BY ANDREW WOOD

ALL PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIC WELLS

FLAT WATER, STRONG WINDS. The Marine Lake is a distinctive feature of West Kirby, unthinkingly accepted by most residents of Wirral as part of the landscape, which is probably the most frequent subject of readers' photographs publish in our local free newspapers. Of course most of us know that it is not a natural but a manmade salt-water lake, but how many of us could put a date on its construction or, for that matter, say when West Kirby Sailing Club, which is based there, was founded? To put the origins of the lake in context, it was not until the last quarter of the 19th century that West Kirby, and its near neighbour Hoylake, were anything more than fishing villages. In 1871, the two places together had no more than 2,118 residents, most of them in Hoylake. On the First Edition of the Ordnance Survey (OS) map, West Kirby consisted of only four or five buildings at the junction of Grange Road and Dee Lane. Thirty years later, however, the combined population of West Kirby and Hoylake had reached 10,991. By the time the Second Edition of the OS was published in 1897, the layout of West Kirby south of Grange Road was more or less as it appears today, and by 1900 the shops on the north side of the road had been built. The cause of this explosive growth was the arrival of the railway. The first railway along the northern end of the Wirral peninsula had been the Hoylake Railway, opened in 1866, but it did not reach as far as West Kirby. Not surprisingly, it was not a financial success since the area it served was, at that time, mostly scarcely populated marshland and sand dunes. Within four years the railway company was in the hands of bailiffs. However, in 1872 the line was bought by the Hoylake and Birkenhead Railway Company, newly formed for the purpose, which extended it to West Kirby in 1878. Developers finally recognised the potential of West Kirby's location, and the place grew out of all recognition. The railway offered the possibility of working in Birkenhead or Liverpool 84 wirrallife.com

and escaping to the clean air and peaceful surroundings in the evenings and at weekends – commuting was born. In addition, and with the railway company's encouragement, those residents of Liverpool who could not afford to live on Wirral could at least take day trips or holidays “over the water”, and lodging houses and hotels sprang up to cater for them. One of the biggest of these was the large and imposing Hydropathic Hotel, built round about 1890 and further extended in 1896. Popularly known as 'the Hydro', the hotel advertised baths including 'Turkish, Russian, Electric, Nauheim, Seaweed, Salt Water Plunge, etc''; one wonders about the healthgiving properties, not to say the method of operation of the Electric Bath! By June 1895, there was talk of building a marine lake, like those that had already been built at Southport and Rhyl. In September the same year the West Kirby Improvement Association had been set up, and a year later a Bill was introduced in Parliament to authorise the building of a continuous promenade from Hoylake to West Kirby, deepening the Hoyle Lake and building a marine lake at West Kirby. The Bill became law in March 1897 and construction began shortly afterwards. The original plan was for a marine lake three-quarters of a mile (1.2 kilometres) long and 150 yards (137 metres) wide. Design and construction of both the promenade and the lake was entrusted to the Borough Engineer, Thomas Foster. His original estimate for the cost of the lake's construction had been £2,500. Because of changes demanded by the Council it actually cost £3,500, for which Foster was heavily criticised in some quarters, although even its final cost was about a tenth of what the lake at Southport had cost. It was fortunate, also, that although both Hoylake and West Kirby got their promenades the intervening section was never built.

W HISTORY L

The Marine Lake was built on the shore in front of the Hydropathic Hotel. The retaining wall needed a solid footing so this would have required drilling down to bedrock. The Lake opened on 21st October 1899 and, as built, it included an openair swimming pool which has long since gone. When the hotel's proprietors realised that the Marine Lake would attract many more visitors to the town. In the 1950s, the hotel was owned by a Mrs Reynolds Jones. In 1963, it was sold to the Tetley Walker Brewery. However, with the growing popularity of holidays abroad, the hotel was unprofitable. It was partly demolished in late 1967 and the remaining part was demolished the following year. Not long after the Lake was opened, a small group of gentlemen decided to form a sailing club to race 12 foot (3.6 metre) dinghies. The West Kirby Sailing Club was formed in 1901. In its early days the club used a room in the Hydropathic Hotel for its formal meetings, but in 1953 it moved into its own purposebuilt clubhouse which, with some alterations, is still in use today. Racing took place both on the Lake and on the River Dee until, in 1985, the retaining wall of the Lake was breached The Lake is popular with sailing enthusiasts, because of its unique combination of flat water and strong prevailing winds. It covers an area of 52 acres (21 hectares) and is no more than 5 feet (1.5 metres) deep, which also makes it ideal for those who are learning to sail. The Lake is large enough to hold sailing events, such as the Wilson Trophy, the premier UK sailing competition, which has been held at West Kirby for sixty years. It is one of the biggest team sailing events in the world and frequently attracts the World Team Racing Champions. The Lake is also used for dinghy racing, sailboarding and other activities including canoeing, kayaking, and power-boating. Early in 2009 it was reported that the Lake had suffered structural damage, probably due to estuarine erosion. Its refurbishment cost ÂŁ750,000 and it is now available again for water sport activities. wirrallife.com 85

WOMEN IN PHOTOGRAPHY BY STUART RAYSON, LEICA STORE MANCHESTER

Regardless of our age or interest in photography, many of us will know or remember the names of certain ‘famous’ photographers, whether they be from the past or the present. British photographer John Rankin Waddell, known better by his working name ‘Rankin’, may be used as an example of a present day ‘famous’ photographer. Historically, we may have heard of names such as Henri Cartier Bresson, often regarded as the ‘father of photojournalism’, or the war photographer Nick Ut, who we spoke about in our April issue, famed for his powerful image of ‘The Napalm Girl’ photograph taken during the Vietnam war. But what about the female Leica photographer? All of the names above have two things in common - all the photographers are men and all these photographers choose to use a Leica camera for their work. But what about the female Leica photographer and their place in photographic history, or is the history of women and photography similar as in the rest of the arts, dominated by stories of men... German born avant-garde and commercial photographer Isle Bing (23 March 1899 – 10 March 1998) produced pioneering black and white monochrome photographs during the inter-war years, yet she represents perfectly what was at stake for women who were wanting to become professional photographers at that time. Shocking her family, a young and feisty thirty something Bing moved from Frankfurt to the surrealist scene of Paris in 1930, where she was commissioned to photograph the Moulin Rouge. This drew her to the attention of magazines such as Vogue and Le Monde Illustre, where she mixed daring perspectives with an unconventional use of natural light to produce her striking images, from which she became known as ‘queen of the Leica’. Her work was exhibited alongside the great Henri Cartier-Bresson and she also pioneered new photographic development techniques. However, sadly her success was short lived, for during the outbreak of the Second World War, in order to escape Nazi persecution Bing had to leave Paris and fled to New York with her husband. Once there, although safe, Bing was never able to resurrect her career, and instead slowly faded into obscurity. Ingeborg Hermine “Inge” Morath (May 27, 1923 – January 30, 2002) was an Austrian-born Berlin languages graduate who became fluent in French, English and Romanian. Morath was drafted for factory service in Berlin during the Second World War, where she was ordered to work alongside Ukrainian prisoners of war. Horrified by this, during a Russian bomber attack on the factory where she was working, she fled on foot back to Austria. After the war Morath worked as a translator and journalist and had by this time added fluent Spanish, Russian and Chinese to her language skills. She was hired as the Austrian editor for 92 wirrallife.com

Heute magazine, a illustrated publication, which bought her into contact with many photographers of the time. In 1949, Marath was invited by Robert Capa to join the newly founded magnum Photos Agency in Paris, where she started as an editor, often scrutinising Henri Cartier-Bresson’s work at that time! During the early 1950’s Morath worked as a researcher and assistant to Cartier-Bresson, which in turn influenced her to pick up the camera herself and start taking photographs. Which she was good at, as by 1955 she was herself invited to become a full-time member for Magnum photos. Morath’s contribution to photography during this time was significant as she was one of only two female photographers working for a predominantly male led photo agency. She subsequently travelled widely as a photographer with her Leica M camera, covering world wide stories for publications such as Paris match and Vogue. Morath was famed by her achievements in portraiture, where she often photographed celebrities in posed images thought out and researched for previously by Morath. She would often use her language and journalistic skills to thoroughly research the background and history of her subjects, knowledge which she used to create her posed portrait shots. Since her death in 2002 at the age of 78, Magnum Photos have honoured their former colleague by establishing the Inge Morath Award, to support emerging young female photographers from around the globe. More recently one may remember the renowned and award winning work of Mary Ellen Mark (March 20, 1940 – May 25, 2015), the American photographer known for her photojournalism, portraiture, and advertising photography. Often seen using her Leica to photograph those who live or exist upon the fringes of our society, Mary said of her Leica camera “It was expensive. I tried the Leica and I loved it immediately. That summer I went to Europe and photographed and I took a Leica with me. The Leica was my first street camera. I’ve worked with Leica for years and years and years. I know it really well. It is still a great camera. I still work with it today.”

W L

The Leica camera has a rich history within photojournalism, where its reputation for reliability and quality place it at the top of any photographers wish list. The Magnum photographer Susan Meiselas choose her Leica M camera for precisely that reason - discreet, reliable, quality. Meiselas is best known for her documentation of human rights issues in Latin America and Nicaragua, and has previously won the Leica Award for Excellence for her documentary work. Leica Store Manchester has over 50 years experience of providing Leica cameras, service and equipment to photographers both within the UK and around the world. We pride ourselves in providing you, the photographer, with high quality Leica equipment that suits both your purpose and needs. We stock a wide range of Leica cameras to suit all abilities and budgets, from the compact Leica C camera, to the professional Leica M series of rangefinder cameras and the mirrorless Leica Q and Leica SL. We also stock, service and sell pre-owned Leica M film cameras, as used so often by the photographers mentioned above, and as all Leica Store Manchester pre-owned equipment comes with a 12 months guarantee, one can make their discerning purchase with the peace of mind that both your new or pre-owned equipment purchase is reliably guaranteed.

PORSCHE ON THE PROM By Norman Shum

Shot by Matthew Eaton

W MOTOR L

One of the great things about Cars and Coffee Liverpool is the sheer array of car clubs and different automobile owners within the meeting. Phil Graham the Regional Director of the Porsche owners club Great Britain - a great friend of C&CL (he always gets the crowds attention every time he rocks up in his vibrant Mexico Blue Porsche 991 GT3 RS) informed us about a great local Porsche gathering this month - Porsche on the Prom. We took our pastel blue Porsche 911 joined by many fellow members of Cars and Coffee Liverpool on a wonderful and enjoyable drive to Llandudno. What a great name to call their annual meeting ‘Porsche’s on the Prom’. Mind you, if your not a Porsche afficionado you might think it was Porsche owners and their expensive cars heading to the prom wearing a tux and gown! As the saying goes, ‘If your names not down you ain’t coming in!’ The advantages of being in the Porsche Owners Club - tea, coffee, bacon rolls and a light lunch organised by the Menai Suite in the St George’s Hotel, which is perfectly placed opposite the entrance to the promenade. Not scaring the tourists or the locals away, it is a free event for you to roam around the vehicles and meet the owners. More than 500 Porsches descended on Llandudno promenade, directed and positioned in a Le Mans-style parking arrangement. It’s surprising the number of Porsche models on display that day varying from the latest versions of 911-991 to Cayman GT4 and the newest 4x4 Mecan, most importantly the older and more authentic models such as 914, 928, 356 and older 911. You name it, every colour under the sun was there like the ultimate toy shop! They couldn’t have chosen a better day for the weather, with the picturesque views of the Great Orme behind and the infinity views of the sea in front. A great excuse for you and your partner to have a cruise to this beautiful seaside resort, enjoy the interesting banter with fellow Porsche owners, or even stroll to the pier down through memory lane with the fine aromas of sugary doughnuts and ice cream parlours. It’s a must!!! See you same time next month for more banter and automobiles at the next Cars and Coffee Liverpool.

MERCEDES-AMG C63 S CABRIOLET

by Tony Yates

If you talk to anyone about buying a AMG Mercedes – they will automatically think you are a ‘yobbo’ and cast you aside thinking the only possible reason you had for buying one in the first place - was because you wanted to annoy every other road user with a loud exhaust and pimped wheel arches. And, in a way I have to agree up to a point, because there is a young chap who lives just round the corner from me who thinks owning an AMG means he needs to have a stereo the size of ‘The Planet Earth’ – and wheels that would not look out of place on a JCB. Well I would like you to forget all about that now and instead focus on the Mercedes-AMG C63 S Cabriolet – because actually this could just be the new soft top you have been yearning for. Power and Efficiency: The C63 is powered by what can only be described as an engine so big that it would not look out of place powering the USS Enterprise. I’m not kidding – what this huge lump of Kryptonite can achieve boggles the mind. Even pressing the ‘start button’ has enough of an impact to spin your eyeballs for about a week. Also, pressing the throttle fully home will have a similar effect and start a massive chain reaction where basically all ‘Hell’ will break lose It’s like being part of a mass prison breakout, but you being the only person they are actually looking to catch for causing such mayhem in the first place. In a way engaging warp-drive in the C63 is like having ‘Satan’ sitting in the passenger seat - egging you on at every possible opportunity. So, just for those of you who think I am over indulging myself - here are some of the engine stats; AMG 4.0-liter V8 biturbo, displacement (cc) 3982, power (kW/hp) 375 / 510, torque (Nm @ rpm) 700 @ 1750–4500, acceleration; 0-62mph in 4.1seconds. Top speed 155mph which is electronically limited; with the AMG Driver’s Package that goes up to 170mph plus. So, now I have all that power – I decided to take the C63 to a racing circuit I know not far from where I live, and on arrival there were a few cars on the track such as the Focus RS, a BMW M5 and funny enough a Audi S5. So how did it fair against the Focus RS – Well let’s just say I passed the Focus while I was adjusting my air vent - whilst also thinking about what I could have for my tea when I returned home. The Audi though was a little harder – but ‘power’ wins in most cases and it was quickly dispatched into my rear view mirror. The BMW M5 however was a bit more challenging – but in the right mode and with the will of a crazy man at the wheel, I managed to pass the M5 on the start and finish straight – mainly because the C63 is better at getting it’s power down earlier on and well before the M5’s computer had even decided what to do next, whereas the AMG had been there already and was already galloping off into the distance. After a few hot laps, the BMW finally gave up and decided to go for a milkshake instead. It’s strange though – because both these cars on paper are evenly matched, but it was the more composed C63 that had the edge on the day and for me was the better car. To be honest – I am not sure what BMW have done to the latest M5, it actually looks slower than it was before and in my opinion it has lost some of its dominating characteristics – which is a real shame. 100 wirrallife.com

On the road: Remember when I said earlier that driving around in the C63 was like riding with ‘Satan’ – well, that’s not always the case if I’m being honest. If you do decide to drive it around a very small village at less than 30mph – then it’s perfectly fine, but the sound coming from the rear of the C63 will pretty much scare anyone within a 50 yard radius. Out on the open road – the C63 acts just like a normal car under normal road conditions. As long as you remember that it’s like trying to control a Tiger in a ‘straight jacket’ and any sudden movement of the throttle will send it into a frenzy of power vs traction – which means in the wrong hands – it can all go terribly wrong very quickly indeed. But because AMG are level headed – the C63 is fitted with so many safety features – that even the most idiotic of drivers would struggle to get it out of shape. For improved traction the C 63 ‘S’ also comes with an electronic rear-axle limited-slip differential to help reduce the slip on the inside wheel when cornering, without control interventions in the braking system. The advantage: it allows the driver to accelerate out of corners earlier thanks to the improved traction. The car remains more stable when braking from high speeds. And the limited-slip differential also improves traction when moving off. So, with all this technology in hand - you really can use the C63 just like a normal car – some would even go as far to say in normal driving conditions is actually quite boring. Design & Technology: As with all AMG models the attention to detail is staggering – and the interior of the C63 S Cabriolet offers a wealth of fine details, all of which have been carefully selected, using high-grade materials whose feel and precise workmanship produce a level of perceived quality that is second to none. Take the instrument panel for instance – it is trimmed with black ARTICO man-made leather with contrasting topstitching – along with the sporty and dynamic ambience all around the interior and nothing I have been in for a while now has felt this good. You can even opt for performance seating as an alternative to the standard-fit sports seats: these allow the occupants a lower seating position and are more strongly contoured for increased lateral support. To sum up: What can I say – The AMG C63 S Cabriolet is a machine that is as tame as a little fluffy kitten. One point though - If ‘Satan’ did own a car – then I am pretty sure without a doubt it would be the AMG C63 S. Price: From £73,770 tony@yatesmedia.co.uk
