You will be asked for your (and guests’) birthday during registration. If you don’t know an adult guest’s birthday, just enter 01/01/2000. Children should enter their real birthday (or something close to it).

Some trips are popular and fill VERY quickly (some within minutes). Have several back-up choices in mind.

If a trip is full, consider the waiting list (these trips do NOTcount toward your initial four-trip limit).We will contact you if a space becomes available.

Access Ability Wisconsin (AAW) has all-terrain outdoor wheelchairs with rubber tank-like tracks available to reserve and use free of charge at several locations throughout the state. 1. sandhill drummers: ruffed Grouse

Perched atop a log or rock, ruffed grouse will call a mate by beating their wings to make a drumming sound. Learn the fascinating biology of ruffed grouse and venture into the field to hear (and hopefully see!) a drumming grouse. Also enjoy a wagon tour of Sandhill Wildlife Area’s many scenic habitats. 2. Waterfowl identification at Goose pond

One of the hallmarks of springtime in the Upper Midwest is the return of waterfowl in their full breeding plumage. Join expert leaders to identify blue-winged and greenwinged teal, wood ducks, wigeon, gadwall, redheads, ring-necked ducks, and some shorebirds too! Learn about the migrations and life histories of these fascinating birds, and the importance of grassland and wetland habitats to their survival. No bathrooms.

3. spruce Grouse in the boreal Forest

Note: uneven terrain and wet conditions. Spruce grouse and boreal forests are rarities in Wisconsin, and this trip has both! We’ll hike off-trail through balsam firs to try our luck at witnessing the rarely seen courtship displays of spruce grouse. Enjoy this exclusive chance to see one of the state’s most unique, secretive, and threatened birds. No bathrooms. Fundraiser for Bird Protection Fund. Limit: 20

6. effigy mounds at Nitschke mounds park

See one of the best surviving examples of the Mound Builders culture that once occupied Wisconsin. Just west of the Horicon Marsh, Nitschke Mounds Park contains 39 preserved animal effigy, conical, and linear mounds believed to have been constructed around 800-1100 AD. Discover a remnant southern hardwood forest in Milwaukee: the Forest Exploration Center! This 60-acre hidden gem is home to more than 50 different plant species, including many spring ephemeral flowers. Explore the history of this piece of land, learn the cultural and ecological significance of some local plants, watch a demo on how to sustainably forage, and enjoy a tasting of foraged recipes. Explore Kemp Natural Resources Station with herpetologists and learn to identify ALL 19 species of amphibians in Wisconsin by sight and sound! Then return indoors for a presentation on frog and toad ecology, followed by a dusk walk in nearby wetlands to identify what species are calling. The annual Neotropical migration of millions of birds is one of the world’s most aweinspiring phenomenon. Marvel at birds up close as we assist the capture and banding of many songbirds that migrate through the savannas, woodlands, and prairies at the Waupaca Biological Field Station and Emmons Creek Barrens SNA. With grassland and shorebird populations in decline, we humans need to advocate and create more habitat for them to survive. Visit a mitigation site to learn about mitigation design and development, and its benefit to water quality and wildlife. Along the sandy banks of the Wisconsin River are 2,000 acres of private land, adjacent to Aldo Leopold’s ‘Shack’ and family farm, that make up the Leopold Memorial Reserve. Explore this beloved landscape’s geologic past, its relationship to the Leopold legacy, and see a diversity of native plants on a 6-mile hike.
