Wisconsin Union Directorate Leadership Awards The Henry B. Herman Award is presented annually to an undergraduate or graduate student who comes from New York City or its metropolitan area, and who has demonstrated concern for community through community service, innovative programming, an appropriate single deed, or other similar kinds of service to others. The Marion McCammond Award recognizes an outstanding student of color who has made contributions to the University community, greater Madison community, or the student’s hometown. Marion McCammond was born in Madison in 1922, graduated from UW in 1944, went to the University of Southern California where she graduated with her Masters in Social Work in 1949. She was a pioneering social worker who created and was the first Director of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) School Mental Health unit. She worked for LAUSD for 34 years, and in that time brought into practice various ways children could be helped through school mental health, through her tenacious determination to make things better for all children of the district. The Lowell Frautschi Leadership Award is made each year to a student(s) associated with the Wisconsin Union who has shown over a period of time, growth and talent in leadership skills and practice, has proven such leadership development in conjunction with programs, activities

or services and has demonstrated an understanding and awareness of the ideals of the Wisconsin Union. The Ginsberg Family Undergraduate Excellence Award for Leadership,Service and Scholarship is presented to junior and senior students who have demonstrated a record of outstanding leadership and/or service to the community along with strong and consistent academic performance. One award is presented to a student affiliated with the Wisconsin Union. This award was established by the University and the Wisconsin Alumni Association. The Union Trustee Leadership Awards are made each year to Wisconsin Union Directorate officers, directors, committee members or a team who have demonstrated dependability, creativity, resourcefulness, group interaction, and leadership qualities. Five awards are given with no more than one given to directors and officers. The Union Trustees established these awards to support outstanding Wisconsin Union Directorate members. The Dr. Harold C. Bradley Leadership Award is presented annually to a student member of Wisconsin Hoofers who has demonstrated excellent leadership qualities through overall involvement in Hoofer Club activities with special emphasis on recognizing a student whose involvement with Hoofers goes beyond participation in a single club or activity. The Hoofer Leadership Award is presented annually to student members of the Wisconsin Hoofers who have demonstrated excellent leadership qualities in Hoofer Club activities. The Walter Pancoe Partnership/Leadership Award is awarded to a member of a recognized UW–Madison fraternity or sorority who has demonstrated participation and/or leadership qualities through involvement in their fraternity/sorority along with significant participation in the Wisconsin Union and Wisconsin Union Directorate.

Passing of the Gavel

The annual passing of the gavel between the outgoing president and the incoming president occurs at the final meeting of the Union Council. The gavel, made of ivory, was presented to Porter Butts in 1931 to recognize him as the originator of the intercollegiate billiards program-a program that found its home in college unions around the country. Porter Butts was the first Director for the Wisconsin Union and served in that capacity from 1928-1968.

Royal Order of Beefeaters

The Beefeaters tradition in England dates back more than 500 years. As the most trusted yeoman warders of the kingdom, the Beefeaters are a symbol of dedication and lifelong service. This annual ceremony has been performed and Beefeater status has been bestowed on Wisconsin Union Directorate members, since 1939. The Beefeater tradition at the Wisconsin Union dates to the opening of Memorial Union in 1928 when a room was set aside, The Beefeaters Room, to recognize the thousands of students who donated time, energy and money to raise the necessary funds to build Memorial Union—thereby setting the example of lifelong service to the University for generations of students to follow.
