We invite you to experience extraordinarily moving artistic moments in our stateof-the-art historical theater, Shannon Hall, and in our intimate, flexible black box theater, the Play Circle. In these spaces, you will see some of the most important cultural icons of our time. From living legends to legends in the making, we bring the best and brightest to our stages.

Customize your experience with Build-Your-Own subscriptions, enjoy new ways to engage with our artists like the innovative Black Box Sessions, and come early for our pre-show cocktail/mocktail hour in Shannon Sunset Lounge featuring signature drinks that complement the performances. With walls of windows, the lounge allows for lakeside sunset views in the fall and spring and offers cozy fireside seating during Wisconsin’s colder months.

How ever you choose to experience our 2024–2025 Season at the Wisconsin Union Theater, we look forward to seeing you!

Sincerely,

The live experience of music, theater, dance, comedy, and performance art is just the beginning of how society and camaraderie are exemplified. Performing arts cultivate culture and community, embodying the core of people's homes to the stage. Despite being often undermined, theatricality remains a significant aspect of human nature. As an audience member, your role is significant; by engaging with the art presented to you, you hold as much power as the performer. As the incoming 2024–2025 Wisconsin Union Directorate's Performing Arts Committee (WUD PAC) Director, I hope to give each of you an unforgettable experience.

As students, we have the honor of curating this year’s live artist experience for you. WUD PAC injects vitality to the already utmost lively community, boasting some of the world's finest artists across diverse disciplines. Our role as curators is to recognize and showcase artists who push the boundaries of their art forms forward. Who would you be if it weren’t for the artists of your lifetime?

The world undergoes constant change and so do its people. We adapt to these shifts. In uncertain times, artists courageously challenge injustices and amplify their voices. Jazz and classical music continually evolve, mature, and enrich their art in profound ways. Welcome to the show, and thank you for opening your hearts and ears to our performances.

Sincerely,

ESPERANZA SPALDING

THURSDAY, SEPT. 19 | 7:30 PM

Shannon Hall at Memorial Union Jazz Series

Called “thrilling, virtuosic, baffling and fitfully exasperating” (The Guardian), singer, songwriter and bassist esperanza spalding’s jazz-fusion works are truly timeless. After reproducing Beethoven on the piano at a young age, spalding quickly became highly regarded as a multi-faceted musician. In 2011, spalding became the first jazz artist to win the GRAMMY Award for Best New Artist, beating out the likes of Justin Bieber and Drake. Performing alongside John Legend, Herbie Hancock and Patti Labelle, esperanza spalding has “made her mark not just as a virtuoso jazz bassist or an effortlessly nimble singer but as an exotic hybrid of the two” (The New York Times). In this special concert, spalding will perform songs from all eight of her previous albums, songs from current releases, plus a special-preview of her forthcoming project.

CHANTICLEER

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 2 | 7:30 PM Shannon Hall at Memorial Union Classical Series

Founded in 1978 in San Francisco, Chanticleer has become one of the most enduring, prolific, and wellknown early music ensembles in the US today. Originally formed with a mission to address the lack of recordings of Renaissance vocal music, the a cappella choir has expanded its reach to include modern classical, gospel, jazz, and pop music. With crystalline voices, precision blending, and impeccable musicianship, Chanticleer makes music of the past shine like new and makes music of the present hold the gravitas of the classics. This evening’s program, titled Music of a Silent World, centers around a new arrangement of Majel Connery’s The Rivers Are Our Brothers and gives voice to the trees, the rivers, and other voiceless elements of our natural world. The program also explores what the world might be like without them.
