HABITAT CONSERVATION
Dersingham Bog National Nature Reserve Dersingham NNR forms part of what was once a vast heath, which stretched the entire length of the north-west Norfolk Greens and escarpment from King’s Lynn to Heacham. It is now part of the Sandringham Royal Estate and managed for its wildlife by Natural England. A wide variety of habitats is found on this site, including dry heathland, wet heathland, acid valley mire, deciduous woodland and coniferous woodland. Alderhill have worked at Dersingham for many years carrying out a variety of operations.
One of the most interesting is to assist in the restoration of heathland by controlling competing species, which is predominantly bracken. The site’s nature is varied, from relatively flat areas to large 45-degree slopes, so a flexible approach was necessary with tractor mounted boomless spraying system and ATV based applications including weed wiping specialist equipment. One of the great pleasures of long-term involvement on a site such as this is that on each visit we can appreciate the difference our efforts have made.
“
Once again the team at Alderhill provided an excellent, reliable service, carrying out habitat and access projects to enhance Dersingham. Through the use of innovative techniques to chemically treat bracken on challenging terrain, the team significantly contributed to the restoration of 60ha of dry heathland, benefiting rare species such as nightjar and woodlark. The footpath created through dense rhododendron growth has provided the public with a scenic woodland walk, whilst reducing disturbance to ground-nesting birds on the adjacent heathland.

AGRICULTURAL FENCING
Claxton Manor Estate After purchasing Claxton Manor Estate on the edge of the Yare Valley, in early 2010, the new owners found their livestock fencing inadequate and had difficulties in managing public access routes. Alderhill were called in to replace existing fences with new ones, and thus ensure the farm’s suckler herd was secure and easier to manage. Our services were required to:
access routes. A combination of fencing types and styles were selected for use throughout the estate, including high-tensile barbed wire, stock netting and rustic post and rail. All featured either galvanised or timber gates.
• Restore grazing boundaries • Help control public access routes • Supply and erect appropriate fencing materials A large number of gates were installed on all major field entrances to prevent unauthorised access; kissing gates were positioned on footpaths to define permitted
“
The fencing and associated works Alderhill has carried out have greatly enhanced our livestock operation and allowed us to manage public access. I look forward to working with them on future projects. John Heathcote, The Claxton Manor Estate

WOODLAND AND HEDGEROW ESTABLISHMENT
Planting for wildlife, amenity and game cover New woodlands and hedges provide many benefits, including increased biodiversity, green corridors with established habitats and improved sporting amenities. The establishment of new woodlands may be carried out independently or with the assistance of grants from the Forestry Commission or other sources.
On the majority of estates a range of approaches provide landowners with a well-balanced outcome, which is financially viable and meets environmental requirements. Our experienced teams will: • Appraise existing woodland and hedgerow • Prepare a planting schedule • Prepare and submit grant applications • Implement and oversee all operations
Alderhill successfully establishes miles of new hedgerows and rejuvenates many existing hedges each year. These are often part of Higher Level Stewardship schemes.

FORESTRY
Active Woodland Management Planted as a coniferous and broadleaf mix some 35 years ago, the woods at Palgrave had not been actively managed for some years. It was the client’s wish to bring these assets back into an active forestry plan. They favoured a staged conversion that would give native broadleaved species dominance.
After careful discussion and a site meeting, Alderhill prepared a schedule of proposed works for each compartment and obtained
a felling licence and relevant grants from the Forestry Commission. Each woodland area was thinned by selective felling that favoured the best hardwoods. Replanting was carried out to the appropriate density and the timber was marketed.

I used Alderhill because of their excellent reputation and was very impressed with their knowledge and professional, friendly service. Jeremy Mason, Palgrave, Norfolk

LANDSCAPING
Saham Grove Moat Restoration A major feature of the picturesque grounds at Saham Grove is the moat. However, in recent years there had been noticeable deterioration of the structural side-wall. Alderhill were asked to suggest suitable methods of restoring it.
mounted equipment was used to ensure minimal damage to the surrounding grounds. The moat was refilled and soon recovered its former beauty.
After consultation with the owner it was decided to replace the existing revetment with a pressure-treated timber structure. The type of timber treatment was specifically selected to ensure it would not prove detrimental to aquatic life. The moat was partially drained, leaving sufficient water to ensure minimal wildlife disturbance. The new timber was then driven into the base material of the moat. Low ground pressure excavator

Having used Alderhill for other projects on the estate, I am delighted they carried out an awkward task with excellent results, negligible damage and disturbance to existing features. Peter Hall, Saham Grove
