Our in-house design department are one of the most experienced in the sector, specialising in the highpressure Watermist environment. From an initial client enquiry we assess the best system to perfectly match the client’s requirements.
We provide the analysis and design of systems best suited to a code compliant, reliable and cost effective solution.
A design using AutoCAD software and quotation is prepared based upon the information received, which may also involve a site survey. After the approval of the initial design we work closely with the client to ensure complete satisfaction with the design and the installation process.
From concept to completion our turn-key solutions ensure that projects are completed on time and within budget.

\ Case Study \ British Airways Data Centre Project BA decided to install a high pressure Watermist fire suppression system to protect their ground floor rotary UPS power generation machinery at their data centre in London Heathrow. The project was deemed critical as the UPS machines work in conjunction with incoming mains power to ensure that BA can process the huge administration associated with running a major airline.
14
Solution Fireworks designed, supplied and installed a local application style solution using our engineering skills to design and fabricate steel frames around each UPS machine to mount the piping and water mist nozzles on to give best placed protection.
Requirements The frames were designed to be removable without disconnecting any pipework to allow for annual machinery maintenance without the need for shutting the entire mist system down and without the requirement for repeated pipe testing.
British Airways chose Watermist technology for fire suppression at London’s busy Heathrow Airport Data Centre. The installation protects critical operations within the day to day running of an international airline.
\ Case Study \ Network Rail Archive Store Project Network Rail Archive Store facility contains an irreplaceable collection of rail-related documents dating back well over a hundred years. Requirements A requirement of the design was that the fire protection system should protect each individual storage area separately and be able to detect smoke before it was visible to the human eye.
16
Testing A series of fire tests were designed and carried out by Fireworks in accordance with the guide-lines of NFPA750 and the specific requirement of Network Rail under the supervision of their designated fire risk consultant.
Observations During Testing It was observed that fires started in various positions within a scaled section of a typical archive store were quickly controlled by the Hydramist速 system preventing the fire from spreading and containing the smoke to the affected area only.
Solution The Hydramist速 high pressure system was linked to VESDA (Very Early Smoke Detection Aspirator) detection in the archive areas and conventional point type detection in the escape routes, corridors and stairs.
Additionally it was observed that the precious archive documents stored adjacent to the fire source were safe throughout the tests as there was zero water penetration to the document containers.
The very latest Hydramist速 technology for fire fighting has been used to ensure historic and valuable documents held in the Network Rail Archive Store are protected by the most effective and efficient means.
Conclusion Crucially, the tests showed that this was the right solution for both archives and libraries, being both effective at fighting fire and safe for the document storage application.
\ Case Study \ United Kingdom Supreme Court Law Library Project As part of or the refurbishment works converting the Westminster Guildhall into the United Kingdon Supreme Court, the Ministry of Justice required a 21st century fire protection system to protect the nationally important central law library. Requirements A key requirement of the design was that the fire protection system should be largely unseen, blending in with the antique style library furniture and bookshelves.
18
Solution Following competitive evaluation and extensive testing, Hydramist速 was selected for this project. Testing Live fire tests with the Hydramist速 system demonstrated that stored materials suffered minimal water damage and it was noted that the Hydramist速 system provided a greater level of fire suppression than other competing suppression systems.
Visual Impact The requirement for minimal aesthetic impact of the system was easily satisfied by incorporating the nozzles within an existing suspended light rail. The Hydramist速 system supply piping was hidden above the bookcases and behind architectural wall mountings.
Located in London, the Westminster Guildhall is of historic interest dating back to 1889. The building was closed in March 2007 for refurbishment and conversion to the United Kingdom Supreme Court.
Conclusion The overall project Architects, Feilden & Mawson, were impressed by the experience and data that Fireworks were able to provide ensuring that this project was carried out smoothly and to the entire satisfaction of all parties.
\ Case Study \ HM Prison Service Project HM Prison Service had concerns with the effectiveness of their installed hose reels. Smoke from the fire presented a greater risk to cell occupants and rescuers than the fire itself. They also created extensive water damage and extended ‘turnaround time’ of the affected cell and in some cases the cell below as well. HM Prison Service asked us to participate in a series of evaluation trials to determine the effectiveness of Hydramist® systems at the world-renowned Buildings Research Establishment (BRE).
20
Requirements BRE test criteria established were: • Maintain a tenable atmosphere for a period of 20 minutes when fire tested in accordance with the specifications • Discharge a relatively small amount of water • Deliver a spray of water mist with sufficient momentum to discharge droplets to the back wall of a cell.
The Inundation was to last for 5 minutes after pre-burn and operation of internal cell fire detection systems, then a simulated ‘rescue’ of an inmate involving opening the door for a set period of one minute would occur, followed by Re-closing the door and waiting 10 minutes during which time the fire was not to resume.
The HM Prison Service commissioned a set of tests to determine the effectiveness of the traditional hose reels which, to date, had been installed in prisons across England and Wales throughout the 20th century.
Testing Watermist Ltd tested Hydramist® products as follows: • Mobile 8 and Hosereel mounted hand held lances • Fixed in cell nozzle with glass frangible bulb operation using a locally mounted pump unit • Modular hose reels.
Hydramist® products tested: • Successfully extinguished the fire at the first attempt • Dramatically reduced cell temperature, toxic gases and smoke to ‘tenable’ levels • Ensured sufficient oxygen was available to sustain life throughout the cell.
Since successfully passing these tests Hydramist® systems have become the equipment of choice for The HM prison Service and are installed in over 150 prisons.

\ Case Study \ Greggs the Bakers Project Greggs are a leading commercial and retail baker in the UK with in excess of 1,000 high street stores located throughout the country. These stores are supplied with thousands of bakery products produced each and every week by a dedicated network of ten large, strategically placed factories.
22
Solution Fireworks designed, supplied, installed and currently maintains high pressure Watermist systems that not only protect the staff and kitchen fryers but also protect the main factory fryers including periphery protection around each fryer canopy, segregating the risk from the main factory in the event of a fire.
Conclusion These bespoke systems were designed to suit the specifications of both Greggs and their insurers. They were the result of extensive live fire testing to ensure that the safest and most efficient system was specified and installed.
Protecting Greggs the bakers supply chain with effective fire suppression systems ensures they can operate effectively and minimise disruption to their business.
