SBS COURSE PROSPECTUS 09-10
t the time of writing, Australia and the rest of the global economy is in the grip of the worst economic downturn since the great depression of the 1930s. One dramatic outturn of this phenomenon is the increased interest from individuals and corporate organisations in business and management education. As we entered 2009 both our individual student enrolments and our corporate training contracts are well up on the previous year. This increase in activity is happening at a time when the School is investing substantially in our capital infrastructure in both Sydney and Wollongong.
A
Towards the end of this year we will start work on expanding facilities at our Sydney CBD campus at 175, Liverpool Street. We will undertake minor renovations on the 14th floor as well as expanding to take over half of the 13th floor. There will be improvements to our library and private study space, a new student lounge and a new IT laboratory. In Wollongong, work is well underway for our transfer from the main campus to a new facility at the University’s Innovation Campus. Our building will be the fourth to open at the Innovation Campus, providing students with purpose designed first class teaching and study facilities. At Sydney Business School our first priority to students and their employers is to make our programs of study relevant, providing the knowledge and competencies to survive in this competitive global environment. Ours is a fairly young School, established as an independent faculty that builds on the traditional strengths and reputation of the University of Wollongong. We have established a strong reputation for providing flexible and innovative educational opportunities and for having established strong ties to the business community. We have been listed in the QS Global 200 Business Schools in 2009, reflecting international employers’ preference for recruiting our graduates. SBS’ research profile bridges the nexus between teaching and learning by being primarily focussed on our strengths in areas such as governance and ethics, health planning and management, international business, survey methodology and supply chain management.
Internationally, we are involved in partnerships with overseas educational organisations in China, France, Spain, Thailand, UK and USA. Nationally, we are a founding member of the Australian National Business School consortium. The strong profile of the SBS has assisted the University of Wollongong to be recognised by the Australian Federal and New South Wales governments, and by independent assessment as being at the pinnacle of higher education in Australia. For example, we are the only university in Australia to be awarded the maximum 10 citations from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council in 2008, placing us as number one in Australia. The annual Australia Good Universities Guide continues to rank us as one of the best universities in Australia. The 2009 Guide awarded us a maximum five-star rating in six separate categories: Getting a Job, Positive Graduate Outcomes, Graduate Starting Salary, Research Intensity, Graduate Satisfaction and Generic Skills. We have also been rated No. 1 for overall student satisfaction according to an independent Melbourne-based Sweeney Research survey released in February 2009. The Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking and the Times Higher Education Supplement World University Rankings both place the University of Wollongong in the top 2% of universities in the world. In our global economy that requires managers and business leaders to have developed critical thinking skills, we welcome enquiries from those who have the motivation to succeed and a desire to never stop learning. We are dedicated to fostering your success and maximising your potential in your chosen career. Please review the information on our website. Do not hesitate to contact me or other members of our academic or administrative team for additional information. I look forward to welcoming you to our School.
