Rakshabandhan is also called Rakhi Purnima or simply Rakhi or “Rakhri”, in many parts of India. The Hindu festival celebrates the love and duty between brothers and sisters. Rakshabandhan in Sanskrit literally means “the tie or knot of protection”. The word Raksha means protection, whilst Bandhan is the verb to tie. Rakshabandhan is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Srava and typically falls in the month of August every year. On the morning of Raksha Bandhan the brothers and sisters get together, often wearing new dress in the presence of parents, grandparents and other family members. If the sister and brother are geographically separated, the sister may mail the Rakhi ahead of the Raksha Bandhan day. The ritual typically begins in front of a lighted lamp (diya) or candle, which signifies fire deity. The sister and brother face each other. The sister ties the Rakhi on her brother’s wrist.

The brother gives his sister(s) gifts such as cards, clothes, money or something thoughtful. The brother may also feed his sister, with his hands, one or more bites of sweets, dry fruits and other seasonal delicacies. They hug, and the larger family ritually congratulate the festive celebration of brothersister love and protection. The sister performs a Rakhi ceremony, then prays to express her love and her wish for the well being of her brother; in return, the brother ritually pledges to protect and take care of his sister under all circumstances. It is one of the several occasions in which family ties are affirmed in India. There are many interesting stories associated with rakshabandhan . The most common one is from the Mahabharata, which acknowledges the relationship between Lord Krishna and Draupadi. According to the epic, one morning, when Lord Krishna was flying a kite

he cut his finger with the thread. Draupadi saw him bleeding profusely, ran to him, tore a piece from her sari and tied it around his finger. Lord Krishna was so touched that in return he promised to protect her from all evil, forever. And he did all along, especially during her ‘cheerharan’ by the Kauravas. One of the famous historical stories involve Emperor Humayun and Rani Karnavati of Mewar. When Mewar was attacked twice by Bahadur Shah Zafar in the mid 16th century, she sent a letter with a rakhi to Humayun as a last resort, to help her. The emperor was very touched by the gesture, and immediately left the military campaign that he was then involved in to protect her. Another one goes like, Alexander’s wife, Roxana, had heard of the festival of rakhi at the time when the Greek king was trying to invade India. To protect her husband ahead of the battle, Roxana had sent a rakhi to King Puru urging him to “protect” her husband. Thus, at the time of battle, when King Puru had the opportunity to kill Alexander, he refrained from doing so because of the vow he had made to his ‘rakhi sister’.

Monica, a survivor from the tourist town of Amatrice said, “We are sleeping in the car and there were shocks all night. When the biggest one came, the car started moving and shaking. But what have we got to lose now? We have lost our house. So many friends and family are dead. We have lost everything, even our fear.” “If we don’t get help, l’Arquata

is finished,” said Aleandro Petrucci, the mayor of Arquata del Tronto, which accounted for 57 of the confirmed deaths. “Here in the winter, the village is practically uninhabited but the population doubles or triples when people come back to their family houses in the summer,” he said. “The operation continued throughout the night and obviously there will be no letup until it is absolutely clear that there is no possibility of finding any more people in the ruins,” said Immacolata Postiglione, the head of the Civil Protection agency’s emergency unit.

Sri Krishna

Janmashtami The great exponent of the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna is one of the most powerful incarnations of Vishnu, the Godhead of the Hindu Trinity of deities. Of all the Vishnu avataras, he is the most popular and perhaps of all Hindu gods, the one closest to the heart of the masses. WWW.AZWISHESH.COM | AUGUST 2016

Krishna was dark and extremely handsome. The word Krishna literally means ‘black’ and black also connotes mysteriousness. The birthday of Hinduism’s favorite Lord Krishna is a special occasion for Hindus, who consider him as their leader, hero, protector, philosopher, teacher and friend all rolled into one. Krishna took birth at midnight on the ashtami or the 8th day of the Krishnapaksha or dark fortnight as per the Hindu month of Shravan (AugustSeptember). This auspicious day is called Janmashtami.

Indian as well as Western scholars have now accepted the period between 3200 and 3100 BC as the period in which Lord Krishna lived on earth. The devotees of Lord Krishna observe fast for the whole day and night, worshipping him and keeping vigil through the night while listening to his tales and exploits, recite hymns from the Gita and sing devotional songs. Krishna’s birthplace Mathura and Vrindavan celebrate this occasion with great pomp and show. Raslilas or religious plays are performed to recreate incidents from the life of Krishna and to commemorate his love for Radha. Song and dance mark the celebration of this festive occasion, all over India. At midnight, the statue of infant Krishna is bathed and placed in a cradle, which is rocked, amidst the blowing of conch shells and the ringing of bells. In the south western state of Maharashtra, people enact the god’s childhood attempts to steal butter and curd from earthen pots beyond his reach. A similar pot is suspended high above the ground and groups of

young people form human pyramids to try and reach the pot and break it. The town of Dwarka in Gujarat, Krishna’s own land, comes alive with major celebrations as hordes of visitors flock to the town. Krishna Janmashtami is significant event in most Krishna temples. The cities and towns which are related to Lord Krishna, Janmashtami is a household celebration.

Much awaited

GST bill passed by the parliament The Goods and Services Tax Bill or GST Bill, officially known as The Constitution (One Hundred and TwentySecond Amendment) Bill, 2014, proposes a national Value added Tax is passed by the parliament and is to be implemented from 1 April 2017. WWW.AZWISHESH.COM | AUGUST 2016

The Goods and Services Tax (GST), the biggest reform in India’s indirect tax structure since the economy began to be opened up 25 years ago, at last looks set to become reality. Goods and Services Tax” would be a comprehensive indirect tax on manufacture, sale and consumption of goods and services throughout India, to replace taxes levied by the central and state governments. Goods and Services Tax would be levied and collected at each stage of sale or purchase of goods or services based on the input tax credit method. This method allows GSTregistered businesses to claim tax credit to the value of GST they paid on purchase of goods or services as part of their normal commercial activity. Taxable goods and services are not distinguished from one another and are taxed at a single rate in a supply chain till the goods or services reach the consumer. Administrative responsibility would generally rest with a single authority to levy tax on goods and services. Exports would be zerorated and imports would be

levied the same taxes as domestic goods and services adhering to the destination principle. Amalgamating several Central and State taxes into a single tax would mitigate cascading or double taxation, facilitating a common national market. The simplicity of the tax will lead to easier administration and enforcement. From the consumer point of view, the biggest advantage would be in terms of a reduction in the overall tax burden on goods, which is currently estimated at 25%-30%, free movement of goods from one state to another without stopping at state borders for hours for payment of state tax or entry tax and reduction in paperwork to a large extent. The tax rate under GST may be nominal or zero rated for the time being. It has been proposed to insulate the revenues of the States

from the impact of GST, with the expectation that in due course, GST will be levied on petroleum and petroleum products. ;font-family:Arial;msofareast-fontfamily:SimSun;fontsize:12.0000pt;” > The Prime Minister strongly condemned those who were attempted to glorify terrorists as martyrs. He said the world will appreciate India’s humanitarian approach, and uniform condemnation of all terrorist activities. He said that in the last few days the way the people of Balochistan, Gilgit, from Pak occupied Kashmir have thanked me, it is the honour to 1.25 billion people of India. I thank those people from Balochistan, Gilgit and Pak occupied Kashmir.

Trump set to make

immigration changes 28

US Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has signalled a possible shift in his hardline immigration policies, with plans to deport 11 million people who are in the country illegally. Mr Trump has put his vow to toughen the country’s immigration policies at the centre of his campaign.

M

Mr Trump’s new campaign manager, Kellyanne Conway, said that Mr Trump is committed to a “fair and humane” approach to those living in the country illegally. “What he supports is to make sure we enforce the law, we are respectful of those Americans who are looking for well-paying jobs and that we are fair and humane to those who live among us in this country,” Ms Conway said. “He’s wrestling with how to do that. People that are

here unlawfully, came into the country against our laws, are subject to being removed. That’s just plain fact,” the Alabama politician Republican Senator Jeff Sessions said. “He definitely is seeking input from this group of Latinos in terms of immigration reform,” Jesus Marquez, a Nevada political analyst and Latino outreach strategist, said. “He is expecting for us to lay out points of a future plan for immigration.”

“Let’s remember that Trump started this campaign by calling Mexicans rapists and continued to find ways to disparage the Latino community by promising to implement a deportation force that would deport 16 million people, end DACA, end birthright citizenship, conduct round ups of families, ban Muslims and other immigrants from entering the United States, and build a concrete wall along the border. If true, this is a cynical attempt from Donald Trump to distract from

his dangerous policies that he doubled down on just this week in a new ad. Donald Trump will be Donald Trump and what’s clear is that he’s dangerous for the Latino community,” Hillary Clinton’s national political director, Amanda Renteria said.

The turning in charka is where the yarn will become thread, which is used for wept.

Khejarli trees. Nearly two centuries ago, Maharajah Abhay Singh of Jodhpur required wood for the construction of his new palace. The king sent his soldiers to cut trees in the nearby region of Khejarli, where the village is filled with the large number of trees. Amrita Devi and local villagers came to know about it and stopped the king’s men. They told her that if she wanted the trees to be spared, she would have to bribe them. She refused to acknowledge this demand and told them that she would consider it as an act of insult to her religious faith and would rather give away her life to save the green trees. This is still remembered as the great Khejarli sacrifice. Bishnois who were killed while protecting the trees were buried in Khejerli village near Jodhpur, where a simple grave with four pillars had been erected. Every year, in September, Bishnois assemble there to commemorate the extreme sacrifice made by their people to preserve their faith and religion.

Saharia the forest people

WWW.AZWISHESH.COM | AUGUST 2016

Saharia, Sahar, Sehariya, or Sahariya is an indigenous Munda-speaking tribe in the Madhya Pradesh province of India. The Saharias are mainly found in the districts of Morena, Sheopur, Bhind, Gwalior, Datia, Shivpuri, Vidisha and Guna districts of Madhya Pradesh and Baran district of Rajasthan. `Sahra’ is being used as a synonym for the word `forest’. The scheduled tribe has been named as `Sahariyas’ only because it was totally dependent upon forests for its very existence in terms of its society, family, livelihood and everything else. The people of `Sahariyas’ tribe never used to bother about their future, because they were confident that forests, which they respect and protect, would never leave them hungry. The other groups of society have exploited the forests to the tilt, for meeting their own selfish-interests. Consequently, the very source providing the food security to the families of `Sahariyas’ tribe has been irretrievably damaged. Left with no alternative, the people of `Sahariyas’ tribe had to look out for labour work in the local stone mines to earn their livelihood. Slowly and slowly, they were becoming a tool of exploitation in the wider perspective of our social system. Due to the constant shrinking of forests and strict provisions of various forestry laws, the `Sahariyas’ tribe were left to face

an unending state of hunger. Respectability, Equality and Education, as enshrined in our Constitution, are not visible in this area and neither these people have any high expectations from the Society. They inhabit clusters of houses in areas called saharana outside the main villages. The housing is generally characterized by prehistoric standards made up of stone boulders and roofing by stone slabs that are locally called patore. Traditionally, Sahariyas trace their beginnings to the days of the Ramayana and beyond. They trace their origin from Shabri of the Ramayan. Some Sahariya’s claim descent from Baiju Bheel, a worshiper of the Hindu god Shiva. The tribe members believe in Hinduism’s folk gods and goddess that they worship and celebrate in major festivals: Veer Teja, Dhakar Baba, Durga, Hanuman, Lalbai, Bejasan, Savni Amavasya, Janmashtami, Raksha Bandhan, Deepavali, Holi and Teja Dashmi.

Lord Krishna Mathura is a city in the North Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is located approximately 50 km north of Agra, and 145 km south-east of Delhi, about 11 kilometers from the town of Vrindavan and 22 kilometers from Govardhan. It is the administrative centre of Mathura District of Uttar Pradesh. History According to the Archeological Survey of India plaque at the Mathura Museum, the city is mentioned in the oldest Indian epic, the Ramayana. The city WWW.AZWISHESH.COM | AUGUST 2016

might also have got its name from a famous Yadav king Madhu who reigned around 1,600 BC. In the 6th century BCE Mathura became the capital of the Surasena Mahajanapada. The city was later ruled by the Maurya Empire (4th to

2nd centuries BC) and the Sangha dynasty (2nd century BC). It may have come under the control of Indo-Greeks sometime between 180 BC and 100 BC. It then reverted to local rule before being conquered by the IndoScythians during the 1st century BC. Archaeological

INDIAN TRAVELOGUE evidence seems to indicate that, by 100 BC, there was a group of Jains living in Mathura.

Mathuran art and culture reached its zenith under the Kushan dynasty which had Mathura as one of their capitals, the other being Purushapura (Peshawar). The dynasty had kings with the names of Kujula Kadphises, Kanishka, Huvishka and Vasudeva. All the Kushans were patrons of Buddhism except Vasudeo, mentioned on coins as Bazodeo. Kanishka even hosted the third Buddhist council, the first two being hosted by Ajatshatru and Ashoka the Great. The headless statue of Kanishka is in the Mathura Museum. Megasthenes, writer of the early 3rd century BC, mentions Mathura as a great city under the name (Methora). The Indo-Scythians (aka Sakas or Shakas) conquered the area of Mathura over Indian kings around 60 BC. One of their satraps was Hagamasha, who was in turn followed by the Saka Great Satrap Rajuvula. The findings of ancient stone inscriptions in Maghera, a town 17 km from Mathura, WWW.AZWISHESH.COM | AUGUST 2016

provide historical artifacts giving more details on this era of Mathura. The opening of the 3 line text of these inscriptions are in Brahmi script and were translated as: “In the 116th year of the Greek kings.” The Mathura lion capital, an Indo-Scythian sandstone capital in crude style, dated to the 1st century CE,

describes in kharoshthi the gift of a stupa with a relic of the Buddha, by Queen Nadasi Kasa, the wife of the IndoScythian ruler of Mathura, Rajuvula. The capital also mentions the genealogy of several Indo-Scythian satraps of Mathura. Rajuvula apparently eliminated the last of the Indo-Greek kings, Strato II, around 10 CE, and took his capital city, Sagala. The Mathura Lion Capital inscriptions attest that Mathura fell under the control of the Sakas. The inscriptions contain references to Kharaosta Kamuio and Aiyasi Kamuia. Yuvaraja Kharostes (Kshatrapa) was the son of Arta, as is attested by his own coins. Arta is stated to be brother of King Moga or Maues. Princess Aiyasi Kambojaka, also called Kambojika, was the chief queen of Saka Maha Kshatrapa Rajuvula. Kamboja’s presence in Mathura is also verified from some verses of the epic, the Mahabharata, which are believed to have been composed around this period. This may suggest that Sakas and Kambojas may have jointly ruled over Mathura and Uttar Pradesh. It is revealing

that the Mahabharata verses only attest the Kambojas and Yavanas as the inhabitants of Mathura, but do not make any reference to the Sakas. Probably the epic has reckoned the Sakas of Mathura among the Kambojas or else have addressed them as Yavanas, unless the Mahabharata verses refer to the previous period of invasion and occupation by the Yavanas around 150 BC. The Indo-Scythian satraps of Mathura are sometimes called the “Northern Satraps”, as opposed to the “Western Satraps” ruling in Gujarat and Malwa. After Rajuvula, several successors are known to have ruled as vassals to the Kushans, such as the “Great Satrap” Kharapallana and the “Satrap” Vanaspara, who are known from an inscription discovered in Sarnath, and dated to the 3rd year of Kanishka (c 130 CE), in which they were paying allegiance to the Kushans. Mathura served as one of the Kushan Empire’s two capitals from the first to the third centuries. The Mathura Museum has the largest collection of red stone sculptures in Asia, depicting many famous Buddha figurines.

INDIAN TRAVELOGUE Fa Xian mentions the city, as a centre of Buddhism about A.D. 400; while his successor Huan Tsang, who visited the city in 634 AD mentions as Mot’ulo, and said that it contained twenty Buddhist monasteries and five Brahmanical temples. Later, he went east to Thanesar, Jalandhar in the eastern Punjab, before climbing up to visit predominantly Theravada monasteries in the Kulu valley and turning southward again to Bairat and then Mathura, on the Yamuna river.

72

The city was attacked and many of its temples destroyed by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1018 and again by Sikandar Lodhi, who ruled the Sultanate of Delhi from 1489 to 1517. Sikandar Lodhi earned the epithet of ‘But Shikan’, the ‘Destroyer of Hindu deities’. The Keshav Dev temple was partially destroyed by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, who built the city’s Jami Masjid (Friday mosque), believed to be on the Kishnajanmabhoomi. It was won over from the Mughals by the Jat kings of Bharatpur but subsequently the area was passed on to the Marathas who constructed a garbh-griha shrine sharing the wall of mosque. The garbh-griha mandir is a small underground temple WWW.AZWISHESH.COM | AUGUST 2016

which houses black moorti of Laddu-Gopal. The ambience of this Kishnajanmabhoomi mandir has been made to resemble that of Prison cell. A noteworthy fact about this garbh-griha is that the wall just behind Laddu-Gopal belongs to Mosque which was constructed by Aurangzeb after destroying the ancient Keshav Dev temple. The Keshav Dev temple was built in ancient times on the site of Lord Krishna’s legendary birthplace (an underground prison). According to the Mahabharata and Bhagavata Purana epics, Mathura was the capital of the Surasena Kingdom, ruled by Kansa the maternal uncle of Lord Krishna. The bigger Lord Krishna shrine, better known as Dwarkadeesh temple is a few metres away from what is believed to be the actual birthplace of Lord Krishna, was built in 1815 by Seth Gokuldas Parikh, Treasurer of Gwalior.

The Puranas ascribe the founding of the city to Ayu, the son of Pururavas and the celestial nymph Urvashi. Mathura is the birthplace of Lord Krishna at the centre of Braj or Brij-bhoomi, called Shri Lord Krishna JanmaBhoomi, literally: ‘Lord Krishna’s birth place’. Traditional belief based on scriptural details and astrological calculations gives the date of Lord Krishna’s birth, known as

Janmashtami, as either 18 or 21 July 3228 BC and departed on 3102 BC. Lord Krishna belonged to the Vrishni clan of Yadavas from Mathura and was the eighth son born to the princess Devaki and her husband Vasudeva. Mathura was the capital of the Yadavas, to which Lord Krishna’s parents Vasudeva and Devaki belonged. The king Kansa, Devaki’s brother, had ascended the throne by imprisoning his father, King Ugrasena. Afraid of a prophecy that predicted his death at the hands of Devaki’s eighth son, Kansa had the couple locked into a prison cell. After that Kansa killed the first six children and Devaki’s apparent miscarriage of the seventh (which was actually a secret transfer of the infant to Rohini as Balaram), Lord Krishna was born.

Since Vasudeva believed Lord Krishna’s life was in danger, Lord Krishna was secretly taken out of the prison cell to be raised by his foster parents, Yasoda and Nanda, in Gokul. Two of his other siblings also survived, Balaram (Devaki’s seventh child, transferred to the womb of Rohini, Vasudeva’s first wife) and Subhadra (daughter of Vasudeva and Rohini, born

Nanda was the head of a community of cow-herders, and he settled in Vrindavan. The stories of Lord Krishna’s childhood and youth tell how he became a cow herder, his mischievous pranks as Makhan Chor (butter thief), his foiling of attempts to take his life, and his role as a protector of the people of Vrindavan. Lord Krishna is said to have killed the demons like Putana, sent by Kansa for Lord Krishna’s life. He tamed the serpent Kaliya, who previously poisoned the waters of Yamuna River, thus leading to the death of the cowherds. In Hindu art, Lord Krishna is often depicted dancing on the multi-hooded Kaliya. Lord Krishna is said to have lifted the Govardhan hill and taught Indra, the king of the Devas and rain, a lesson to protect native people of Vrindavan from persecution by Indra and prevent the devastation WWW.AZWISHESH.COM | AUGUST 2016

of the pasture land of Govardhan. Indra had too much pride and was angry when Lord Krishna advised the people of Vrindavan to take care of their animals and their environment that provide them with all their necessities, instead of worshipping Indra annually by spending their resources. The spiritual movement started by Lord Krishna had something in it which went against the orthodox forms of worship of the Vedic gods. Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan hill and held it over the people like an umbrella. The stories of his play with the gopis (milkmaids) of Vrindavan, especially Radha (daughter of Vrishbhanu, one of the original residents of Vrindavan) became known as the Rasa lila and were romanticized in the poetry of Jayadeva, author of the Gita Govinda. These became important as part of the development of the Lord Krishna bhakti traditions worshiping Radha Lord Krishna. On his return to Mathura as a young man, Lord Krishna overthrew and killed his maternal uncle, Kansa, after avoiding several assassination attempts from Kansa’s followers. He

Christopher Edwards, along with colleagues analysed the Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) data and says “Our findings are consistent with the presence of hydrated salts, because you can have hydrated salt without having enough for the water to start filling pore spaces between particles.”

“Some type of water-related activity at the uphill end still might be a factor in triggering recurring slope lineae (RSL), but the darkness of the ground is not associated with large amounts of water, either liquid or frozen,” Edwards said. “Totally dry mechanisms for explaining RSL should not be ruled out.”

Nail Art Trend of the day Nail art is a creative way to paint, decorate, enhance and embellish the nails. It is a type of artwork that is done on fingernails and toenails, usually after a manicure or a pedicure. A manicure and a pedicure are beauty treatments that trim, shape and polish the nail.

N

Nail art is considered to be a fashion activity and commonly viewed as selfexpression. There are no limitations to it; nail art could be anything from simple French manicure to 3-D stickers and more. The exact origin of nail treatments is unclear, it appears to have originated from different parts of the world around the same time. In ancient Egypt, from 5000 B.C. to 3000 B.C., women would dye their nails with henna to indicate social status and seductiveness. Women of the lower class wore pastel and neutral shades, while the upper classes wore deep, bright shades. In Babylonia, 3200 B.C., men, not women, painted their nails with black and green kohl, an ancient cosmetic. The nail care industry has been growing ever since the invention of modern nail polish. Women around the world, spend billions of dollars on nail art and that number has been increasing year after year. In 2004 Nailympia London was

established. Each year hundreds of professional nail technicians from around the world compete in the 2-day conference by showing off their skills in categories such as “Gelnails” and dramatic categories such as “Fantasy”. Nail art is a way to create one’s own identity through fashion, using colors and shapes as a disruption of childhood and entering to the female teen / adult world, leaving the influence of their parents to create their own selves. The nails for teenagers and adult women represents a piece of symbol of what is a woman and how the woman should present itself. Nail art can complement your outfit for a special event or add a unique touch to your personality every day. There are a number of designs that you can create yourself. Try duotones, glitter and jewels, polka dots, blended colors, marbling or stamping to create a gorgeous effect.

Surviving a Difficult

Relationship 102

WWW.AZWISHESH.COM | AUGUST 2016

Difficult relationships take a lot of energy and time and can be very disempowering. But it is possible to resolve these relationships. Difficult relationships are painful. Whether it is with your mother, spouse, child, co-worker or boss, the pain of separation can be almost unbearable. Philosopher William James said, “Whenever you’re in conflict with someone, there is one factor that can make the difference between damaging your relationship and deepening it. That factor is attitude.” With difficult relationships, the other person may not ever change their behavior. You can become un-attached to your interpretation of their behavior and be able to let go off the pain it is causing you. Even when you resolve your relationship in this way, you may still choose to end the relationship. It will be easier for you to end the relationship if you have first resolved your feelings toward the person. It can be a challenge to make a lasting change, so you might want the help of a friend or a coach. It is worth it, because the ability to resolve these difficulties empowers you to move in your life with far less resistance.

relationship, we are already stressed, already on the edge most of the times. In situations where he or she is not giving you time, ignores your needs, forget your birthday or an appointment etc. etc., one should not crib too much or create a scene. Learn to forgive is a beautiful human emotion, whether in a difficult relation or not, it is one of the best tools for peaceful living, especially so, in a difficult relation. When the other person does not come up to your expectations, whatever the reason may be, we get angry. At times, we even become vindictive. Loving unconditionally is the core feeling which binds every relationship. The all prevailing powerful emotion of Love helps us to evolve to the next level in our quest of evolvement. Love fully, freely and unconditionally.

Patience is teh first and foremost helpful tool which can help us when we are in a difficult

Importance of having an healthy

lifestyle WWW.AZWISHESH.COM | AUGUST 2016

A lot of us are desperate for a lifestyle change, lifestyle lift, healthier lifestyle and lifestyle fitness. The importance of living a healthy lifestyle for maintaining general good health and preventing chronic diseases has been well established. A healthy lifestyle is quite simple to achieve - one does not need to do anything “crazy to adopt a healthy lifestyle. A certain amount of independent thinking is required to separate the truth from fiction in most modern health advice. The most important thing you can do for a healthy lifestyle is, eat well. Avoid toxins in your food as much as possible and consume plenty of fresh fruit, veggies and whole grains, exercise moderately a few times every week, avoid smoking, including passage smoke and avoid gaining too much weight. It may not be always possible to eat all Organic food, but avoiding environmental toxins as much as you can is an important aspect in achieving a healthy lifestyle. Modern lifestyle is very convenient, but it can also be extremely unhealthy. Most of us eat too many processed foods and too few fruit and veggies, we

rarely exercise and when we develop chronic conditions such as diabetes, we rely on conventional medications to make us feel better, but these medications often have devastating side effects. Not all aspects of living a healthy lifestyle are in our control. We are going to be exposed to certain environmental toxins, whether we like it or not. But many of these factors are absolutely in our control and we should be responsible and make the right choices.

Eating well is the perfect way to get in tune with your body and really get back to basics of what your body needs. It challenges you to give up the vices that you take for granted, break your addictive eating habits and start again from the beginning. Eating well is a healthy lifestyle choice, that gives you clarity on what your body really needs, not craves and becomes the foundation for all other healthy lifestyle choices.

Mauryan Empire

110

After Alexander went back to Babylon in 324 BC, Chandragupta overthrew the old Aryan kingdom of Nanda and formed a big new empire in over all of northern India and into Afghanistan. Chandragupta conquered the Indus valley back from the Greeks and as part of the peace treaty he married the daughter of Seleucus, who had succeeded Alexander.

T

he Nanda King, Dhanananda, had by his tyrannical ways created many enemies, and one of these, a proud and fiery man of the high Brahmin class whom he had thoughtlessly insulted in Court, was to soon enough cause his ruin. This was Chanakya, who, under the pseudonym Kautilya, later wrote the famous political book ‘Arthashastra’. An unforgiving opponent, he had vowed not to tie his hair in the customary Brahminical topWWW.AZWISHESH.COM | AUGUST 2016

knot until he had avenged his insult. This didn’t particularly worry Dhanananda, what could a single Brahmin do anyway? He exiled him from Pataliputra and considered it the end of the matter. Travelling in exile through the Vindya mountains, Chanakya met Chandragupta Maurya, a young man who too had deep personal grudges against the Nandas. Chandragupta Maurya’s background is obscure. Chandragupta’s spirited personality impresssed Chanakya and he decided that he would make a far better King than the oppressive and debauched Dhanananda. Together they set about provoking the people of Magadha against Dhanananda and as that happened to be many amongst the populace that Dhanananda had offended in some way, it was not long before they had managed to amass a considerable force.

The new Mauryan Army was still numerically inferior to that of Dhanananda, but, under its inspired leaders, lacked neither in courage nor persistence.

The new Mauryan Army was still numerically inferior to that of Dhanananda, but, under its inspired leaders, lacked neither in courage nor persistence. Which was just as well as success came only after many severe setbacks and also apparently after Chanakya overheard a mother telling her child to eat his hot meal from the sides inwards. Taking hint, the Mauryan Army stopped trying to seize Pataliputra and began attacking first the outlying regions of Magadha instead. The tide turned in their favor. By 321 B.C. Chandragupta had succeeded the Nandas WWW.AZWISHESH.COM | AUGUST 2016

and the long reign of the Mauryans had begun. The advent of the Mauryans brought them into conflict, next with the Greek General Seleucus I Nicator, who had inherited both Alexander’s Asian holdings and his Empire-building dreams. These, Chandragupta shattered in 303 B.C. The resulting treaty gave the loser 500 war-elephants and granted to the victorious Changragupta the Seleucid Provinces of

Trans-Indus (Afghanistan), Seleucus’s daughter Helen in marriage and the future Court presence of the Seleucid Ambassador Megasthenes. The latter’s fascinating account of his tenure, ‘Indika’, has survived in fragments down the centuries. The State owned all the farms, forests, mines, and industries, maintained a standing army and efficient spy system, followed a fair and strict judicial policy and a free religious one, had trade and diplomatic relations with foreign powers like Egypt, Syria, Rome, Greece and China, encouraged art and culture and patronized the famous

Universities of Taxila and Pataliputra. The citizens, in general, were prosperous and content and remained so for the next 136 years. Chandragupta was succeeded by his son Bindusara who also proved to be an able ruler and greatly extended the Empire’s boundaries. His successor was Ashoka, who, according to legend, came to the throne after a fratricidal struggle for ascension and seemed initially atleast to

He established tree-lined highways, rest-houses, schools, colleges, even veterinary clinics, gave alms to the poor and the sick and did many other things that he thought would benefit his subjects. By choosing Buddhism over warfare and rejecting the practical Arthashastra policies, he unfortunately weakened the kingdom for his descendants, and they, far less capable men, were unable to cope with the disintegrating forces. In 185 B.C., with the murder of the last Emperor, Brihadratha, the Mauryan Empire came to extinct.

The world’s first driverless taxis went into operation in Singapore in a limited public trial, in the race to roll out the revolutionary technology. The “robo-taxi service” is being tested at a small research campus away from the thrum of the Asian business hub.

“The trial represents an extraordinary opportunity to collect feedback from riders in a real-world setting,” said nuTonomy chief executive and co-founder Karl Iagnemma. “This feedback will give a unique advantage as we work toward deployment of a selfdriving vehicle fleet in 2018,” he said. The six taxis, Renault Zoe and Mitsubishi i-MiEV electric vehicles will operate in a 2.5 square mile (4.0 square kilometre) area, with a set pick-up and drop-off points. Trips have to be booked through the company’s smartphone app. “This is really a moment in history that’s going to change how cities are built, how we really look at our surroundings,” nuTonomy executive Doug Parker said. Doug Parker, nuTonomy’s chief operating officer, which has partnered with

the Singapore government on the project, said he is expecting to have 100 taxis working commercially in the Southeast Asian citystate by 2018. “People are a little bit nervous when they get into the car, but that very quickly changes,” Karl Iagnemma, the co-founder and CEO of “nuTonomy” said. “You would be surprised at how quickly people get out their phone and act like they’re in any other form of transportation.” Although the high-tech cars will drive themselves, each journey will be accompanied by a nuTonomy engineer, who will observe how the machine performs and be ready to take over in the event of a problem, the company said. American multinational online transportation firm Uber Technologies Inc. announced that it has

acquired ‘Otto’, a technology startup, whose aim is to make trucks self-driving. While announcing the move in a posting on Uber’s website, chief executive officer and co-founder Travis Kalanick said that his company would put about 100 self-driving sports utility vehicles (SUVs) onto the streets of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as soon as this month. Swedish carmaker Volvo announced in May that it would give self-driving cars to ordinary Britons to test on the streets of London in 2017. In 2014, Google unveiled a 25 mph driverless vehicle, minus a steering wheel. Co-founder Sergey Brin unveiled the car, equipped with only a stop/go button and is capable of reaching up to speeds of 25 mph, at a conference in California.

With 306 sets of medals, the games featured 28 Olympic sports. Association has sent the nation’s largest ever delegation, a total of 117 athletes. Three unassuming women became the redeemers for India in the Rio Olympics as the country concluded its campaign with some good, bad and ugly memories. Defying all the odds and showing the killer instincts, PV Sindhu, Sakshi Malik and Dipa Karmakar became the unlikely heroines. The trio notched a few firsts for India with Sindhu, at 21, became the youngest to win an Olympic medal, a silver which was never achieved in the badminton and Sakshi’s

bronze was also the first for women’s wrestling. India’s first female gymnast Dipa went on to miss a bronze by 0.15 points but her clean finish in the high-risk Produnova vault won the hearts of a nation. Lalita Babar became the second Indian woman to qualify for the final in a track event at the Olympics in 32 years and finished 10th in the 3000m steeplechase. An 18-year-old golfer Aditi Ashok slipped away from being in the top-10 at the end of second round to finish 41st with an overall score of seven-over 291.

Star Gazing ARIES The energies in September will be extreme. Either you will be on a high or will hit rock bottom. Work will be stable with new projects after 9th and 18th. A stuck project will also pick up lace after 6th. New projects or talks about them will keep you busy. While work is good. You will still be mentally stressed thinking about the outcome. All I’ll say is, enjoy the journey. Stop being persistent. Finances will be stable but you will be faced with unexpected expenses after 15th.

GEMINI 128

This month just avoid any kind of friction. One thing will just lead to another, making you the epicentre of all the stress and turmoil. Work will pick up pace after 4th but you might not enjoy the company of people that you are working with. Everyone around you will just test your patience, so you be aware of how you need to handle this. New projects or opportunities will come your way after 16th, but clarity will only come in after 26th.

TAURUS You won’t know where you are coming from and where you are going. You will be blank or lost this month. Work will be slow till 22nd, which almost through the month. There could be slight issues at your workplace around 11th-16th, which might test your patience. You might also have to be adaptive to new people at work. Avoid starting a new project or signing a contract before 14th, as it could fall apart later. WWW.AZWISHESH.COM | AUGUST 2016

CANCER This will be a hectic month but will give you the results you have been waiting for. Work will be slow but positive till the 8th, but after 11th you will not know what hit you. You will be on a roll, closing deals, signing contracts or initiating new projects. An important meeting set up between the 12th and 17th will go in your favour with brilliant results after the 27th. You might also have to hire new people or set up a new team suddenly due to the increase in work. Fame or recognition will follow post 22nd.

LEO You could be very harsh on yourself this month for no reason. You need to slow down your mental pace. Work will be stable with new projects coming in after 12th and 27th September, which will only manifest in October. Avoid mood swings with people at work as you could tick someone off around 17th. Be patient and focus on one thing at a time. Work is not an issue here, but the way you handle it can create issues, so be mature about it.

VIRGO You are going to have to slow down whether you like it or not. You have been exhausting yourself beyond capacity and September will be a smooth speed breaker and a much required one. Career will pick up after 3rd, but will slow down between 15th and 21st. You might get clarity about a project between 6th and 18th, which will yield results only after 15th. New opportunities will come through between 4th and 17th, results of which will be seen after 26th. Avoid friction at work between 11th-19th.

SCORPIO Mixed energies as you enter September. You will gain some and lose some. With emotions hitting the roof, you will have to make a conscious effort to calm yourself down. Career will be on a roll with a lot of decisions to be made. This month, you will be laying the foundation for something new. It could also mean a new business, expansion or a new tie up that will manifest after 9th and 26th.

SAGITTARIUS September will mark a new beginning for years to come. You have a lot of ideas and thoughts that you have been suppressing or avoiding, that will culminate this month. Work will be smooth and neutral, but you will begin to create new ideas after 8th, which will manifest in reality in October. You just need to have faith in your vision. Stop seeking approval.

130

AQUARIUS This month is all about clarity and planning the future. Though you like everything to be perfect, it’s time for you to be more flexible and start accepting people and situations just the way they are. You might lose focus on work till 10th, post which work will pick up and also give you results after 19th. You might hire or work with new people but avoid stress.

LIBRA You seem to be lost and this month will give you a sense of new direction provided you take charge of situations. Work will be slow till 14th, especially if you are in a creative field. You might even face flak for certain impulsive decisions made in the recent past. Avoid overreacting. Those who are in area of commerce will get a promotion or there will be a sudden change in your responsibilities or role for the better. WWW.AZWISHESH.COM | AUGUST 2016

CAPRICORN Slow down: this is the only advice I’ll give you this month. There seems to be a lot of friction around and you need to withdraw from it, as you could land up in a real mess. I don’t mean to scare you, but I’m just preparing you against the big wave. Work has been slow since 29th August, and will be slow till September 17. You might go through friction with people at work around the 8th-20th.

PISCES The energies this month will give you a sense of direction in areas of work as well as relationship; the trick is to take the leap at the right time. Work has kept you disturbed since mid-August and will continue to till 11th. Clarity about a stuck deal or project will only come through after 17th, but in all likelihood things might not go the way you want them to.
